Milk bottles for tea?

Remember the tea and milk controversy? Well, I have lived it again and this time on David's Tea's Facebook page. They are selling these milk bottles as... Milk and tea bottles. This caption came with the above picture: "Tea and milk go amazing together. Tea in milk bottles is the next logical step!" No, it is not the next logical step. Don't get me wrong, I love milk on its own, as a delicious drink. But it is also a barbaric one. And it has no place in tea, except to spoil and dilute its flavour. That said, yes, these are nice milk bottles. David's Tea knows how to make good tea accessories. I might buy one of these bottles, if they come in some other colors than these pastel ones. To drink milk or tea, but not milk and tea together. Because they are not amazing together. Anyway, my next purchase with them is a travel mug, which remains the most practical and ergonomic accessories they have invented. I can barely wait.

Summertime is here (most definitely)

Well, summer has been here for quite a while, but it did not strike me as much as this week. The temperature is bordering on heatwave and it is very sunny. The grass is dry and yellow as if we were in a savannah. If people think summertime is green, they are wrong: summer is a rough, dirty yellow. Another sure sign of the festive season is that night comes very, very late. The solstice is over, but we will not feel the night coming early until the end of August or so. Right now, summer is in full heat. I try to enjoy it, although I find it more draining than anything else these days. How is your summer?

Creepy Geese

I recently blogged about a menacing seagull. Tonight, it is going to be about creepy geese. As you know from my previous post in English, we went yesterday to meet my whole family in law. It was the occasion to see our niece again, the daughter of my brother in law, who I hadn't seen for two years or so. She is now a teenager, but apart from growing up, her personality hasn't changed all that much: she is as outspoken and full of life (and attitude) as she ever was. She was really happy to see us and we spoke about lots of things...

...Including her pet peeves and fears. She, among other things, developed a disgust for geese and ducks, and pretty much all water birds. And yes, she saw The Birds, but it was after she decided that geese were evil. According to her they are like seagulls (which she does not like either) aggressive, greedy, have a nasty cry and are overall creepy. We walked by a lake near the pub and she exemplified it when she saw the geese on the lake and the shore: "Look at these dark, soulless eyes, as if they'd have empty sockets, these dead stares!" Her dad thinks she uses "like" too much, like all teenagers, but I thought she was nevertheless very eloquent then. Her depiction of the geese certainly deserves to be a new great unknown line. Not her first great unknown line, but it has been a while since I wrote one from her mind on this blog. And because of it, for now on, I will find geese creepy.

A journey in the rain

I am using again this painting from (local?) artist Janet Fois, because it illustrates the topic of this post so perfectly. Today, my wife and I went to see her family for a pub meal, an hour away from home. (I will tell you more about it in a future post). Just as we left, it started raining a lot. it didn't last long, but for a few minutes it was pouring and the wipers were squeaking plenty. It was not nighttime as in Squeaky Wiper, but it made me think of this image anyway. I often say that you never experienced rain until you have seen and felt English rain. This was true today.

Journeys in the rain can be quite stressful, especially on unfamiliar roads, but thankfully the rain did not last long. In spite of it, I find traveling in the rain very atmospheric, especially here. Lousy weather might be easier to endure while in motion than staying at home, when you can easily feel trapped. And it makes you appreciate more arriving at your destination.

The outsider in the art gallery

I thought about replying to the comments on this post, but then considered that writing a new post would be more suitable to speak of the whole story. Because I came back to the art exhibition of the new collection of Fabian Perez. I just walked in, avoided for a while the employees ready to give me a drink or sell me something. I just walked around through the crowd (which was not as big as I thought) and looked at the paintings. Lovely, lovely paintings. I could even take a picture of a few of them and, gasp, say a few words to the maestro himself. As he was about to be pictured with one of the woman who had bought something and the photographer was getting ready, I kind of bumped into him, said hello, he said hello, we shook hands, he thanked me for coming and I thanked him for showing up in this little town. And that was my meeting with Fabian Perez.

A bit later, the saleswoman who had tried to sell me something in my first visit earlier in the evening came back to me and told me that my favourite (it was a version of this one) had been sold already (and very quickly). I said that I couldn't win them all. Which is not a lie, technically. I did not even feel like a fraud playing the art connoisseur. She did try to make me buy the one you see here, I think it is one of the Whiskey at Las Brujas, which I admitted I loved quite a lot. It was one of the cheapest ones, incidentally. So it was not an original. I love when Perez depicts archetypical character, the hard man smoking and drinking hard liquor, all squared jaw and everything. The man one would sometimes want to be. I guess this goes with the female characters too. But anyway, I escaped without buying anything, although I wish I could afford a few of them, and I managed to talk to the artist. So it was a pleasant evening.

Hansel & Gretel

This week, at the school where my wife works, they did with the children a stage adaptation of Hansel and Gretel. Unfortunately I could not go and see it, but it made me want rediscover the old take. Like many old fairy tales, I find this one deliciously terrifying. I know the stage version the pupils played had been toned down with many comedic moments. I will know more about it, as we are going to see my wife's friend and her daughter and her friend (the ticklers), both pupils at her school, will tell me all about it. Until later, I will leave you with this old animated adaptation by Ray Harryhausen, who was very young at the time. The children look almost as creepy as the witch. Harryhausen takes a few liberties with the story, but still it is a great take on the tale, with an ugly, evil, sinister, nasty witch that could scare even the most adult adults.

The Friday Sandwich

Do you remember back in the days when I used to talk of my Friday treat? I basically used to mention what I ate at work at lunch time. This is as trivial as it sounds. Well, I have decided to resurrect this tradition on Vraie Fiction. Well, I have every Friday the same sandwich now as a treat, which I buy from the local sandwich counter. With a green Coca Cola. This is my treat to make Friday go faster. And I think I have just discovered the best mix of sandwich fillings for Friday. First you need a baguette, because a proper sandwich needs proper bread. Then for the filling: chicken mayo, red onions (raw), salad, tomatoes and... black olives. And salt and pepper. Seriously, the olives make the whole difference. It turns a banal chicken mayo into something else. I don't know why, it just does.

The lime in the Corona

I took this picture yesterday in a local pub when my wife was giving a concert yesterday. For the record, I rarely, if ever, drink Corona, or indeed any insipid lager beer. I mean when you need a bloody lime for the beer to taste something, you know you are not drinking a beer worthy of the name. But yesterday, I was in the mood for it. Corona reminds me of my early twenties as a uni student, especially in the UK, as I was drinking it quite a lot in these cheap pubs and clubs that often did not have proper beers. It is true that by the time I was drinking Corona, I was already drunk so the taste did not bothered me one bit. And it was usually quite cheap. Or at least as cheap as alcohol could be. It became one of our drinking traditions in our little group, mainly composed of Italians, and I was the one to teach them to push the lime to the bottom by turning the bottle upside down. One of my Italian friends had her thumb so thin, she could not cover the hole, so I had to help. Since then, every time I have a Corona and look at the slice of green lime, it reminds me of that time.

Question existentielle (263)

I worked from home

Summer is finally here, because it is quite hot, a borderline heatwave in fact. At work, we had problems with air conditioning. It was hot and the fans we used didn't help one bit. So in the middle of the afternoon, my manager decided that it was no working conditions and that he and I could go work from home. Which I did. I was lucky enough to catch my train connection right on time. So I was home for the last two hours or so of my working day. I did work beyond my usual time to make up for the time spent in early commuting. Even so, it was far more relaxing than I thought it would be and I was far more efficient that I thought I would be. This is usually why I don't want to work from home, also because I remember in a previous job the work brought home was taking away my evenings and stressing me a lot. But not this time. So I might not mind doing it again, once in a blue moon.

Notre hymne national

A menacing seagull

I was having my lunch break walk this afternoon, a bit late as I usually do. At some point, I saw and especially heard a seagull, flying low above me. It was cawing at me menacingly I think. It flew fairly low, at some point I thought it was about to dive on me like in The Birds, but it went up and then kept remained there, still crying in an ominous way to no one. It really felt like I was in the movie. Which reminds me that I need to read the original novel/novelette by Daphne Du Maurier. Apparently, this is not merely pure horror fiction. In fact, a quick Google search told me that seagulls have been increasingly aggressive in recent years. So watch of the skies and beware of the seagull.

Art crowds and the outsider

I don't know if I missed something very special or narrowly escaped it, but I need to quickly blog about it: the local art gallery I blogged about recently is not only showing Fabian Perez's work, it is actually hosting an exhibition of his work right now. And the artist will be/is here as I am typing this. I stopped by on the way from home, looking very much like a the outsider I was. People mostly wore suits and there I was, in jeans and with my backpack I always bring with me. Even though I looked out of place, one of the employees there offered me a drink (I refused, I don't like alcohol during week days) and asked me questions: which painting was my favourite, did I owe any of Fabian Perez's work already (and she asked this with a straight face), where did I first discovered him, etc. The artist was running late, she said, but he would be there soon. I left before, afraid she might trick me into buying one (or that very fancy book on the left). Anyway, it is still going on, not sure if I will stop by or not. I felt like a piece of juicy meat, but on the other hand I do want to see Fabian Perez.

Of rain and umbrellas

One trivial thing you probably don't know about me (not that it is worth knowing, it is that trivial): I don't like umbrellas. I find them impractical if the weather is really bad (especially windy, when they become downright useless), cumbersome, a darn pain to dry after use and, in this country, they get old really quickly. I mean really, really quickly. They get rusty, fall apart, etc. England is a terrible place for umbrellas. I have long stopped using them and now I simply use coats with hoods. It keeps my hands free.

That said, during my last plane trip, taken from Southampton Airport, I read in the airplane magazine an article about Mr Standord, a brand of umbrellas. And I have to confess two things: I loved their history, how the brand came out to be, and I loved their products. If their umbrellas were not so prohibitively high (around £150), I may even have been tempted to buy one. Maybe as a present to someone. Someone very dear to me, because I wouldn't spoil just anyone like that. And, while I love the design, I cannot buy one for myself, given my natural dislike for the object itself. In the end, it is the look I love, not its use. In the article, they say they will expand their brand to other items, including some clothes. If they ever sell raincoats, I might be tempted to buy one.

Summer Solstice

Today is the summer solstice, the longest day of the year and the official first day of summer (although for me summer starts with the first day of June). Like last year, I decided to commemorate on this blog by uploading a picture of the mystery play my family and I saw at the medieval festival of Visby in Sweden. We visited Sweden a bit more than twenty years ago and I think a lot about my time there these days. But this picture is fitting for the solstice for two reasons: 1) like for the imagery mystery play, Midsummer has roots in Pagan folklore, with its display of fire and demons and monsters, in sum primitive forces of nature and 2) I was never so conscious of summer lights as in Sweden. We visited it in August, but all the same the sun was up very, very late. I never felt as much in summertime as in Sweden that year. it also happened to be one of the warmest and driest they had in history. But in any case, the summer solstice reminds me of this mystery play.

Napoleon Rising

Because it is the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo (well, it was on Thursday), BBC Radio 3 has featured Napoleon Rising, a play adapted for the radio by Anjum Malik. The play is based on the Napoleon Symphony by Anthony Burgess. You can listen to it here, for a few days still. The novel is amazing, so is the play. If you can get pass the English actors with English accents passing as French characters (and I easily did), you will find an genuine portrait of the artist in this play. Because Burgess considered Napoleon, like many of the fictitious heroes he created, as an artist in his own way. He also stripped away historical characters and events of the pomposity we often drape them in to show them in something like raw, bare authenticity. His Napoleon swears, curses, his soldiers go to war in ghastly conditions. It is a story full of violence, dirt, obscenities and yet... Yet the art of war is truly an art: compared to a waltz, to music, among other things. And the words, the dialogues! There is such a virtuosity in its prose, it is absolutely brilliant. So yes, please listen to it. And read the novel.

Making Tea

This painting is from local artist Eunice Goodman. It is titled Making Tea. I saw it at an art exhibition a couple of weeks ago, with other works from local and not local artists. I really love these exhibitions, partially because some of what is sold I can actually afford. I even bought some stuff from it once or twice (see here). So about this painting from Eunice Goodman. I fell in love with it for may reasons. You have tea and cakes, so you know it is going to be afternoon cream tea, an English tradition I love. You the little girl holding a cupcake, you have a black cat at the side of the kitchen counter, sitting there. He's not doing anything, but he is there, in this place and that makes it even more enjoyable. In sum, it is an idyllic picture of tea time. Or the time before tea time, to be accurate. We had to vote for our favorite work in the exhibit. There were a few I loved, but in the end I voted for this one.

Merci, Monsieur Simoneau

Merci, Monsieur Simoneau.

Trollflöjten

Recently, I have developed an obsession for Trollflöjten, Ingmar Bergman's version of Die Zauberflöte by Mozart. Back in the days of tape recorders, so in my teenage (I must have been 14 or 15), my parents had taped it. I had started watching it but got bored because I didn't like the fact that it was basically a stage presentation. I had seen the opera on stage before, that year or the year before, and in Vienna no less. So I was unimpressed by Bergman's take on it. Teenagers can be so shallow. And a bit stupid. Anyway, I was at the time, I am ashamed to admit. But at least I loved opera. I had wanted to revisit it, and only did recently. But then, when I did, a few weeks ago, I sure did watch it. And again. And again. As I said, it really got me obsessed.

It is not Bergman's most famous or more acclaimed movie, but it is an amazing interpretation of the opera and a true labour of love. It is also the only movie of the director I have watched so far. And I am not ashamed to say it, because how many, even among his admirers, really loved the magic flute? Beside, it only means that there is more to discover. I loved the way the story moves from a stage version to completely ignoring the stage and taking a life of its own... only to return to the stage, including intermissions and audiences. And of course you have the music. You can't go wrong with Mozart. I have decided to upload here the beginning of the first act, just for fun. Two absolutely trivial observations that yet struck me:

-It is in Swedish. As a teenager, I hadn't even noticed they have translated the libretto from German. I understand little German, but I could tell it was not the same language, having listened to the original libretto over and over again. Still, I know the story so well I have no problem to follow it.
-The cast is so darn good looking. Everybody is beautiful! Even Monostato has some kind of magnificent ugliness. When I saw the opera in Vienna, half the cast was borderline morbidly obese. During my only trip to Sweden, how beautiful the people there struck me and watching The Magic Flute reminded me of it.

"Apologies for the conveniences"

The train for work was late today, of a good thirty minutes. When the conductor signaled that we were running late, he had a slip of the tongue and said: "Apologies for the conveniences". He corrected himself immediately, but I thought it was funny. Funny enough to be considered a new great unknown line, albeit an involuntary one. And for me, it ended up a convenience: I read more than usual and as it is quiet at work at the moment, I didn't have to make up for the lost time. In fact, it considerably shortened my working day. More so than it was already supposed to be: as I have been working a lot and holding the fort while many people were away on conferences, my manager had already given me the second half of the day off. So I must have worked three hours or so today. That's my kind of Friday and, I don't want to rub it in for anyone still working now, but what a way to start the weekend! Apologies for the conveniences indeed.

Art and the artist

A few weeks ago, I was so happy to discover this picture at the window of a new(ish) local art gallery, when I was walking home. My readers may recognize the work of Fabian Perez. It is one of its Eugenia, IX if I remember correctly. Another femme fatale, like he does them so well, with the glass of wine and the cigarette. I don't find smoking glamorous in the least, except when Perez paints his characters smoking. You can see my reflection in the window. People looking at me taking the picture must have thought I was obsessed. I am, in a way.

And I might have again missed an opportunity to meet the maestro in person: the art gallery where I first discovered Fabian Perez in 2012 sent me an invitation for an exhibition of his when he will be there. It was a local art gallery, now they moved in a nearby, bigger town. Thinking it was in this nearby town, I wanted to RSVP... But discovered talking to them that it was in another branch, further away. And I am not sure if we could make it that evening. I do want to meet and talk to him. I saw Perez once, but the place was so crowded I could not get to him and say a word. I guess they would have tried to make me buy a painting and I cannot afford them anyway. Heck, I may not have been to speak to him unless I buy something! Still. I'd like to have a chance to say a word.

Parfois, je me sens bonapartiste.

The ever expanding tribe

This is a quick post about tonight's Krav Maga class. I am in pain, as usual, but it is good pain. I feel good. And anyway, however in pain I am, it is far less than when I started. Tonight I did something silly: I forgot to put my sneakers, so I wore my ordinary Clarks shoes instead. But nobody noticed. That is for the meaningless anecdote. More importantly, the number of students has gone up again: one newbie last week, who is very talented (he puts me to shame really), and two newbies this week: a young adult woman, borderline teenager, and a thirteen year old girl, the daughter of one of the veteran students. She is apparently too good for the children classes (because the club I belong to also gives children classes). Sometimes, I feel that we are part of a new tribe of Israel. Except that none of us is Jewish (I don't think so anyway, but I might be wrong). In a way, it is true. I have not made friends yet, true friends I mean, so far they are more acquaintances, but all the same, it does feel like a tribe.

Sunday at the Regatta

I never thought I would say this, especially not after my last post on the topic, but Sunday I had a lovely time at the regatta. Granted, I didn't see the boats (this picture was taken back in 2013 at a completely different time and yes I uploaded it before) and I barely saw the Thames. But it was as if the bad crop from the day and night before were all suffering from a heavy hangover (which they probably were) and all that was left was the family and community orientated events. I really felt like I belonged here, in this town, and it does not happen very often. In the afternoon my wife gave a concert as a member the local orchestra in the park by the Thames. Typing this, I guess we are really locals now. Anyway, so she gave her concert in the afternoon and then in the evening we went to see an operetta by Offenbach, showing live on a screen, in the park again. The night was cool, but I had thought to bring warm clothes and even the discomfort of sitting of the ground and getting pins and needles had some kind of charm. Watching a show outdoor simply enhances the experience with a unique atmosphere. It just felt right. So I am surprised to say, but it was the best Sunday I had in a very long time.

Dreaming of train journeys

I took this picture during last year's holiday in Devon, it was on the steamed train journey from Totnes to Buckfastleigh and back. I am watching and rewatching these pictures from my last holiday, because I already long for my future holidays in York. And also because one of the things I love about these kind of holidays is the long train journeys. I kid you not. I just love travelling by train. And I learned that there is a National Railway Museum in York, so I know of at least one thing to visit. These holidays, like last year's, might be train themed.

It might be because I am looking forward to experience the exciting long train journeys leading to a new destination (to me at least) that I have recently borrowed from the local library a brochure dating back from 1973, about the history of the local train line. It used to cost twenty pences, as it says on the bottom of the front page. But it is a most precious things. The information may be given in a dry manner, but looking at these old black and white pictures of train stations I know so well, see them in a different light, see also how the train line has not sadly dwindled here is fascinating. It is another kind of journey, through time, that I also long for.

800 years of Magna Carta

In case you have not noticed it with Google Doodle, but the Magna Carta is 800 years old today. As I am a medievalist, I had to mention it on this blog. I cannot be trivial all the time. I am of two minds about the celebrations of the Magna Carta (about which I am no specialist, by the way, in case you wanted to ask me questions on the matter). I am glad history is remembered and celebrated, and it is always good that we remember such essential event. Heck, I was an academic in another time, I am happy academia itself has a bit of spotlight with this anniversary! And as a republican, I am also happy when a monarch is humiliated, so if only for this it deserves to be celebrated.

On the other hand, it is also an exercise of English self-flattery. Don't get me wrong, the Magna Carta is an important document for the history of this nation and the Western world. But it is absurd to imply, as I have heard by some commentators on the TV (or the telly as we call it here), that the UK has been a democracy and its people free for the last 800 years. I also find a downright aberration the English centrist view of history that has been displayed with the anniversary. It reminds the history seminars of my Master degree, when the teacher (English) had to explain to the British students that the end of the War of the Roses did not mark the end of the Middles Ages, contrary to what they have been told at school. Because in a wider European context, the War of the Roses was absolutely meaningless and did not change the time period. Yesterday, I heard a historian saying that other similar texts existed in other European kingdoms. So let's not forget this as well.

Sodom and Regatta

This weekend, our usually quiet little town is hosting a regatta. One of the apparent advantages of dwelling by the River Thames. I said apparent, because I think now the regatta is more a curse than a blessing. I blogged about it back in 2010. Basically, it may have been a great event at some point in the town's history, but it is now an excuse for people of all ages to get seriously wasted on alcohol while they wear fancy clothes. I went out twice yesterday, once in the afternoon, once in the evening. The first time there were many people, men in suits and women in posh dresses, all wearing bottles of beer, cocktail or wine, already drinking. When I went out in the evening to buy groceries, they were the same people, from teenagers to elderly, all smartly dressed, all drunk. I might have been the only sober person in the street.

I did not feel in danger, but I remained aware of any potential danger. There was a heavy police presence. I saw one police officer helping a drunken woman in her forties (I think) who was for some reason prostrated by the entrance of a shop, looking in pain, although I could not see any wound or anything like this. How can someone get drunk in high heels? If most people seemed happily drunk, some teenagers may have sounded somewhat aggressive. I don't know how it was in the pubs. As I said, although there was no clear and present danger, I remained aware of the possibility, so I did not spend much time out. And I felt glad to learn Krav Maga. It was also at the back of my mind the whole time: this is why I decided to learn self-defense. I had a thought about one of fellows Krav Maga-er, who is a barmaid in a local pub and who I know was working tonight. I understood yesterday why she decided to learn herself. So that's it, yesterday this quiet little town by the Thames seemed to have been transformed into a modern Sodom and Gomorrah. Go figure.

Fish & Chips Friday

It happens to me from time to time, it happened recently: I had a huge crave for fish and chips. It was satisfied yesterday, as we went to the best fish and chips shop in town (there are only two, actually) and I bought this meal for myself. On Friday, it is fitting to have fish and chips. It was delicious, but lacking in malt vinegar. A shame: I specifically asked to pour an ocean of malt vinegar on the dish. After all, you can't drown a fish, especially not when it has been deep fried like this one. And you need the malt vinegar to unclog your arteries with all the fat you eat in a portion like this one. Well, that is my rationale regarding it anyway.

So my fish and chips craving has been satisfied again, in spite of the disappointment regarding the condiment. It should not reappear for a few weeks. With any luck I will only crave fish and chips during our stay in York, where apparently, from what I once heard/read they make the best fish and chips of the country. I will try to have them on a Friday, just because it is fitting.

Tickle Attack!

Yesterday, my wife and I had dinner at her friend's place. There was her friend, her friend's partner, their daughter (Buffy's owner) and the friend of daughter who was having a sleepover at their place. The two girls love each other like sisters and they grew very fond of us for some reason. They are also very naughty, especially together. At some point, I started laughing at some joke on TV and they thought I had a funny laugh. My laugh is pretty normal as far as I know, but they thought it was weird and wanted to hear it again. So after whispering to each other some cunning and devious plan, they turned to me as I was sitting on the sofa, screaming "Tickle Attack!" and started tickling me. The two of them. Two nine years old girls were tickling me right on the neck, where I am very ticklish and pretty helpless. So I laughed uncontrollably, a different laugh, nervous, sometimes frantic and high pitched. The girls went hysterical and so did my wife and my wife's friend. "It's hilarious just watching him," said Buffy's owner, which might sound like a mere observation, but just for the vocabulary used, deserves to be a great unknown line. My wife even took a video of me, forty seconds out of five minutes of pure tickling torture. Thankfully, she won't Facebook or YouTube it, because she wouldn't do this with other people's children. Because it was very humiliating. But it made our evening. The girls have always been merciless towards me, but this beats everything they ever done. I kind of dread what they have in mind for me next.

RIP Christopher Lee

I am late reporting the news, however I could not ignore it, because of my love and admiration for the man and his work: Christopher Lee died recently, at the venerable age of 93. He played Dracula in many movies, he resurrected from pretty much every type of deaths, from getting a stake through his heart to being burned by sunlight, but he could not survive old age. More than a popular actor, Lee was a polymath and a true artist. I enjoyed so many of his roles, especially his Hammer ones. He played so many iconic characters, was often the best thing about many flicks of sub-qualities, but for me he will first and foremost be the Count. Because although Lee had many different roles, and Dracula was played by many different actors, Lee is the only one who actually bothered making the character true to the spirit of the novel, for which he had a great respect. When I read the novel, Dracula has the traits and the voice of Christopher Lee. That said, I will never limit his monumental career to the role I prefer. And I intend to watch more and more movies with Christopher Lee, of all genres. In the months leading to Halloween, I will treat myself with a few Hammer flicks. In the meantime, here is one of his interviews which I find fascinating:

New Spectre teaser

This acrylic painting was done by (local?) artist Teresa Illman. It is titled James Bond/Daniel Craig and it is of course inspired from a scene of Skyfall. I wonder if Ms Illman is into the movie, the character or the actor. But in any case, fan art doesn't get any better than this and looking at the picture I felt a connection with the artist as a fellow Bond fan. A Bond fan that is getting very excited as Spectre is getting filmed and its release date is getting closer and closer. And we are getting more news about the upcoming movie. Recently it was a first glimpse at Christoph Waltz as the (most likely) villain of the piece, today we have the new TV spot teaser. You can see it below. There is a lot from the original teaser, which I loved, but also a good deal of new footage.

I have a few observations about it:

-Obviously, this one is far more action orientated. The set pieces are impressive and everything looks very exciting.
 - Hinx seems to be one nasty piece of work: at what appears to be a SPECTRE meeting, he dispatches someone by twisting his neck like a chicken.
-Bond is depicted more like a seducer, as you first see him getting closer to the character of Léa Seydoux, then Monica Bellucci's.
-There is a beautiful feeling of danger coming from that scene between Bond and Lucia Sciarra: she is warning him about imminent danger... which does not stop him from coming at her.
-The classic line: "Bond, James Bond" delivered by Craig here is the best in a long time.

So here we have it. What did you think of it? I am enthusiastic, as you can tell. Oh, and for the observers, I left another bit of homage to James Bond on this post. Try to find it.

Question existentielle (262)

The Krav Maga updates

I am back from my sixth class of Krav Maga. I have little new to say, in fact pretty much nothing that you have not read before in my previous posts. But hey, I am learning and improving. We have a new student, some guy who is tall and muscular and seem to know what he's doing. I feel like I am a dwarf sometimes compared to my fellow wannabe warriors. All the same, it was good fun. We had to hit a pad held by another student today (foot, fist, elbow, repeat) as hard as we could. The instructor did not like the way I was sort of hitting the pad at first. Because as hard as one can should be as hard as one can. I was taking it easy for two reasons I think: 1)I feel like I have little strength in my arms or fist and 2)the girl holding the pad was a 18 years old shorter and smaller than me. I did not want to hurt her. Which is silly because it is a darn pad I was hitting, not her. But then the coach said 1)he'd make me do twenty press ups if I was not to go harder and 2)told me to imagine that he was the pad. I think he thought because he's hard I'd be vindictive. But I think he's a nice guy, so instead I imagined some nasty villain from an action movie or some old pulp fiction or something. I worked with archetypes (see, I am an intellectual even when I do martial arts and I make good use of my past life as a doctor in literature). It worked just as well, because I kicked the darn pad hard and the instructor was quite happy. We did another similar exercise afterwards, when we were held back at the belly by a karate belt held by a student. I did not need to be asked twice that time. When you have to work for it, to earn every punch you throw, you just become harder at punching. So these were the Krav Maga updates this week.

Penultimate Springwatch tonight

I don't know if it will feature otters, but it is the penultimate Springwatch episode of 2015 tonight in a few minutes on BBC2. I did not follow it as much this year, what with life taking a lot of my time and keeping me away from the TV screen. I hope I can find time to catch up on BBC iPlayer. Anyway, to my British readers: watch it. Get the reminder on now. Turn the TV on. And enjoy British wildlife. So anyway, to illustrate this post, I decided to use this picture from the otter sanctuary in Buckfastleigh. From last year's holidays in Devon. The otter was eating a rats burger. This is one thing I love about otters: they are also predators and they eat the rodents I hate. Think of me if otters are featured tonight.

Tea for the road

I found this picture on the Facebook page of David's Tea. I had not visited it for a while. It is two of their travel mugs, wearing their summer colours. I love all their tea accessories, but this one is next on the list I think. I can just picture myself using a travel mug on long train journeys here. It just fits train traveling. I am not certain how a travel mug works for tea: how do you infuse it on the road? But there must be instructions coming with it. In any case, I want one. Actually, I want a David's Tea travel mug for every season. So four all in all.

The home of the Shelleys

This is Albion House, in the town of Marlow, Buckinghamshire. The town has many charming old buildings like this one, but this is a very special house: it was the home of Mary and Percy Bysshe Shelley for a year or so, between 1817-1818. This is where Mary Shelley completed the writing of Frankenstein. So this is a sacred place of pilgrimage for all aficionados of the horror genre. I will try to go back there around Halloween to take a picture, see if the circumstances bring extra atmosphere. Until then, behold the sacred place that saw the birth of a monster.

It will be York

Well, it is official since yesterday, we will go to York for the holidays. We have found an accommodation and made reservation, so everything is secured. Once we found the one we wanted, everything just came automatically: it is the perfect place, situated in the city near every tourist attraction we want to go to, the reviews are good and the place looks lovely and comfortable. And knowing we found our accommodation just cleared every doubt in our mind about York as a holiday destination. So the holidays are now pretty much sorted. It is both a relief and exciting.
