11

Today is our wedding anniversary, my wife and I have been married for eleven years. Not as symbolically important a number as last year's ten years anniversary, but still worth celebrating. We did nothing on our nine years anniversary because we were waiting for Wolfie to arrive, last year we soent the weekend in the fancy hotel when we have had our wedding reception ten years earlier. Tonight will be on a much smaller scale: we are going to give each other cards, then dinner out. Wolfie might be a bit more conscious of what's happening, which should be interesting.

My spooky personality

As my readers know, I love Sarah's Scribbles. As they probably know even more, I love Halloween, my favourite holiday of the year. So I was very surprised and a bit... spooked, when I saw her comic strip yesterday. This is exactly how I am, especially these days, because yes, it is coming. Scary how accurate this is. It is as if Sarah was connected to my mind.

Back to realitea

I took this (atrocious) picture in Brittany during our holidays. I was receiving a daily supply of tea in lovely mugs like this one from my mother-in-law. Since yesterday, I am back at work, like many people like me who just got back from the holidays, but I still have a daily supply of tea, although not in a nice Breton mug full of character like this one, but on a nondescript mug for working men and women. And tea is no longer the little bit of hot liquid pleasure to enhance the enjoyment of free time, but the drink that helps gets you through the day. So it is thus back to realitea. And I know this word play is atrocious, but I had to say it.

"Little rascal"

"Little rascal" is the nickname Wolfie's grandfather (on his mother's side) gave him since we stayed with them. I might use it myself. You can read the definition here and I can tell you, it fita Wolfie to a tee. It is now our word of the day. And as a note, the grandfather does not mind having such a naughty grandchild.

Question existentielle (332)

Pig Latin

Sometimes you find silly things over the internet. I found this a few years ago, and shared it on my Facebook then, because I thought it was so hilarious. I decided to share it tonight here on Vraie Fiction, because it is still hilarious. It was written by Grant Snider and I must be forgiven as I know absolutely nothing about him (but I did share another of his cartoons here). I am really rubbish in Latin, however I know of a few expressions and pretty much all of these, some I have already used on this blog from time to time. Anyway, to make you laugh a bit and laugh intelligently like educated people, enjoy this bit of witticism.

Saguenay Dry

Is autumn finally on its way?

We have had a very hot summer, with heatwaves over heatwaves. I thus want to be careful saying what I will say, but it seems that can finally see some signs of autumn: in the last few days it has been much cooler, sometimes even lower than twenty, enough so I can put a long sleeve (yet still light) jumper. Also, the apples are ripening, as you cans ee on this picture (taken at my parents-in-law's garden), which is generally a fairly sure sign of the coming season. It might sound silly for me to say this:autumn will come as it always does, but what I mean is autumn as it should be, with all the appearance and feel of the season: cooler temperatures, change of colours, etc. We have been fairly lucky in recent years, 2015 and 2017 particularly were ideal autumns here and, while 2016 started sometimes a bit too hot (but I was too busy preparing and adapting to Wolfie's coming in this world to be bothered by it), it quickly became more typically autumnal. So there you have it. I am ready for autumn, what about you?

5019 KM

Wolfie in the plane

Yesterday, we bid farewell to my in-laws and to Brittany and came back to England. This was an emotional moment, like farewells always are, but at least the flight was relatively easy. It may be because our sons has traveled fairly often by plane since last Christmas, but he was in a fairly pleasant mood. He was fascinated by the plane and the plane journey, looking at the window at what was happening, without once getting distressed or scared. His grandfather said he might become a pilot. He might be right.

Breizh Cola

100 years of Leonard Bernstein

Google Doodle told me and I am glad I have been made aware of it: today is Leonard Bernstein's 100th birthday. Well, he would be 100 if he was alive. He is of course the composer of West Side Story. I know his career was far wider than merely creating this musical, which I consider almost an opera, but for me, he will always be the composer of West Side Story, the only musical I truly consider great. It's the only one I truly love. Not so much for the lyrics than for the music. Without it, it would be just another attempt to modernize Romeo and Juliet. Anyway, I thought I would share one song here to celebrate Bernstein.

Latitude 47e Nord

Pot roast

My father sent me a photo of this pot roast they made recently at home.I love pot roasts, especially this time of year, which is for me THE time for pot roasts. The vegetables have been harvested, they are fresh, summer is ending and autumn is about to start. This is a transitional hearty meal, good for either the end or the beginning of the seasons. I am getting more and more in the mood for hearty meals, even though it is still a bit hot outside. Recently my mother-in-law made a delicious meatloaf, but this is for another post. For those who want to enjoy the end of summer and are eagerly waiting for the next season, here is a bit of food porn. I don't know when I will enjoy a pot roast next (last time was around 2004 I think), but I remember the taste very well just looking at this.

The 87th Precinct in a nutshell

"The city in these pages is imaginary. The people, the places are all fictitious. Only the police routine is based on established investigatory technique."

I recently finished one novel from Ed McBain's 87th Precinct series. Nevermind which one for now, but my mother-in-law asked to read it as soon as I put it down. She said: "Once I am started on an Ed McBain, I put the book down only once it is read." She had it finished the next morning, I think. In any case, this deserves to be a great unknown line and it explains very well how gripping the series is. My wife was really surprised that her mother was interested in crime fiction, she said her husband (I mean my wife's dad, not me) introduced her to it. I didn't know my father-in-law read Ed McBain as well, although it seems now it is his wife who enjoys it the most. Anyway, this sums up the series from a reader's perspective. That and the disclaimer at the beginning of each novel, which I quoted at the beginning of this post, just because.

Growing pumpkin

Guess what we found in my in-laws`garden? A pumpkin! Still green, still growing. When it is ripe and has a nice orange colour, my parents-in-laws will make something edible of it, a soup or something. I suggested carving a Jack O'Lantern, although it might not have the right shape for carving a face. And today is the birthday of H.P. Lovecraft, the grandfather of modern horror. It is not related to this growing pumpkin, but maybe it is. I will try to read some of his horror stories in his honour, as I have already started my pre-Halloween reading list. Even though there is still a long time to go and it does not feel very autumnal, I am in a Halloween mood. In fact, the 20th of August, being Lovecraft.s birthday, can be my official non official start to my countdown to Halloween. Take theis (still) green pumpkin as a sort of milestone on the way to the 31st of October.

Incontournable Kouign Amann

It`s called reading...

I foun d this on my Facebook feed a few years ago. I know nothing about Glasbergen, but I wanted to share this one. I found it funny and not too preachy. I have been doing lots of reading these days. Not to sing my own praise or anything, but I had been doing more reading than usual, with the free time on my hands.

The mysterious feline visitor

Yesterday evening, we saw this cat in my parents-in-law's garden. Apparently, he comes fairly often, for hunting (he killed many mice and birds). They had not told us about it because we are a family of cat lovers and they knew we would be enthusiastic about him (or her?). The cat is not feral and I suspect he has owner: he may be a bit on the thin side, but he is very sociable with us and spent a good deal of time rubbing against my feet and accepting my cuddles. We said they should adopt him (they refused) and we have decided that, although we cannot do it ourselves, we will at least give a name to this visiting feline. He`s black and white, slightly more white maybe, he has a fluffy tail but overall short-ish fur, he does not seem scared of children. Oh and Wolfie adores him. I was thinking Figaro, but not sure if it truly fits him. If it is a female cat, we would need another name.

Muscadet(-sèvre-et-maine)

Grandparents' time

We are on holiday in Brittany, where my wife`s parents (and thus Wolfie's grandparents) live. It is great: he can be busy with them while we can rest for a bit. That is especially good for his mummy. And it is funny to see how enthusiastic Wolfie is in this new environment and how he loves this attention. Little anecdote about it: we all went to the supermarket to buy groceries. I placed WOlfie in the place to sit in the trolley and offered to push. His grandmother said right away: "Oh I don't think so!" and took the trolley away from me. Moral of the story: it is grandparents' time.

The new ticket office

I took this picture at the National Railway Museum of York. It's a good old fashioned ticket office, like you don't often see anymore. Our local train station is very small, it has only one platform going in one direction and no ticket office of any kind. That is, until now: they have added a few things, extra benches, roofs for the rain and... one ticket selling point. Granted, it is nothing like the one on this picture, in fact it is a ticket machine, not a proper ticket office, but it should make our railway travels much easier and less stressful. I still hope for a proper ticket office in the future, to give the station a bit of character.

Cocoa, hazelnut, but no palm oil

I was looking for some chocolate and hazelnut spread that was as addictive as Nutella, but healthier and more eco-friendly if possible. Ideally something I could share with Wolfie. And I found this spread by Meridian. I tried their products before, in fact we give this brand of peanut butter to our son. Anyway, the monkey on the label was advertising that it had no palm oil so I decided to try it on my toasts. And that tastes... Quite good, but it is not as addictive as Nutella unfortunately. At least I can enjoy it without feeling guilty.

"It feels like autumn"

I didn't say it, for one, so it is not wishful thinking: it is my wife who said it no later than last Saturday. Because it is now quite cool, or at least far cooler than the last few weeks, because it is often cloudy and rainy. There is most definitely an autumn feel in the air. I don't think it will last, but it is nice. And even some leaves have changed colour, although I know it is because it had been very dry before. Still, these days is a reminder that there will be an autumn and I am grateful for it.

Ghost Ship

I quickly bought some beers yesterday as I was out of stock, which is always an issue for me (I love my beers on a weekend). One of them was Adnams' Ghost Ship. I had it as last evening's poison. I am not sure if I had it before, but it's a pale ale that is not too pale and thus perfect for the rainy weather we've had recently. And of course I love both the name and label. I might drink it again in the weeks leading to Halloween, as it certainly fits as a Halloween themed beer. Haunted ships are an important part of spooky folklore and ghostly encounters on a boat often make great scary stories. I even read a few of them.

What movie is this from?

I blogged before about the Flying Bean Café at the Beaconsfield train station. I loved right away this small quirky place, and one aspect of it I really love is the way they offer to give tip: by putting it in a cup that is an answer to a trivial question of culture. So as you can see on the picture, they asked what movie was the following quote: "A boy's best friend is his mother." The two choices were Forrest Gump (which I always loathed) and Psycho (classic thriller which I love so much that I actually read the novel, see this post here for details). The problem is that I had not watched either movie in a while and while I thought this sounded like Norman Bates and very, very familiar... it could be in a different context given to Gump and I could thus just be wrong and my memory was playing tricks on me. I placed my bet in the Psycho cup, only because it's my favourite movie of the two. Which one do you think it is from? And don't look down, that would be cheating.

Well, it turned out I was right! My memory and my gut feeling had not betrayed me. So it was Psycho all along. And now I am really looking forward to go back to the Flying Bean Café in Beaconsfield (or elsewhere?) to test my knowledge again. Until then, tell me if you got it right (or not) in the comments.

Preemptive melancholy

This is what I said last year to my Italian friend on Facebook (I know about it thanks to my Memories feed): "August is the month of preemptive melancholy." She was sharing the same feelings I have about this time of year. I think it sums up pretty well what is August and it deserves to be a great unknown line. In the meantime, I coin the term "preemptive melancholy".

Wolfie and my books

I don't know why exactly, but my won seems fascinated by the books I have. Whether I buy one at the local bookshop or receive one delivered from Amazon, or simply put one on my bedside table or on the armrest of the sofa, little Wolfie picks it up, take a good look at the cover, opens the pages, holds it upside down, shakes it sometimes, opens the pages again, then looks inside with a lot of curiosity, as if he was literate. I am both proud and fascinated.

The fig tree in the alleyway

I took this picture of the fig tree two weeks or so ago. I blogged a few times about this alleyway and its fig tree, which is from a private garden next to it, but which branches are so long that they cover the side walk completely, as if it was a natural roof of branches and leaves. I simply love it, I love the shade under it. It is maybe my favourite spot in town. during my one single time in Italy, I used to go figs picking (you can read about it here). From what I remember, every single Italian family has its own fig tree. So this tree reminds me of then, it is like a small piece of Italy planted in England.

Or, c'est maintenant chose faite.

The very long summer

Apparently, the heatwave is coming to an end: by Wednesday, temperature should cool down in their lower twenties. But the Met Office could not just give us this bit of good news, of course not, and I learned today in a BBC article that the warm weather could last until... October. So it is only a possibility, but it got me in a really bad mood. I sure as Hell hope it won't be the case! Because this summer has been far too long already.

"Circle of Death"

I saw yesterday a memory on Facebook dating back from when I used to do Krav Maga, so not so long ago. In one of my instructor's posts, right after our training session, he asked us: "why did I get you to spin around before circle of death?" I do not exactly recall what is the circle of death, but grosso modo from what I remember it is an exercise when you defend yourself against multiple attackers, when they are surrounding you. Hence, you are in the middle of a circle of death. It sounds sinister, but during training it is really exciting. Anyway, here was the answer I posted: "Because in combat situation it is unlikely that the circumstances will be ideal. Especially in group fights. We'd be dizzy, disoriented, maybe intoxicated. So the exercise reflected that. That's my theory anyway." I don't know if this was the exact right answer my instructors, but one of the assistant instructors gave me a Like so I think my idea was not very far off. In any case, I think it deserves to be a new great unknown line. I miss Krav Maga a lot these days. I am not a natural fighter, far from it, but I do have a good analytical mind sometimes. In any case and even not taking into account how useful Krav Maga is, I miss the group and its camaraderie. I really felt like I belonged there.

Luggage for the holidays

I took this picture in a local pub which has a navy theme for a name and overall look. Which is strange as we are far from the sea and the pub itself is not even near water. So it has old suitcases as part of the decorations. I do like the look of them, because I love old vintage things. And also because they remind me that the holidays are getting closer and soon as I will be packing up our baggage. I am not very patient, so I keep reminding me that it will be soon.

First Blood

Tonight's reading suggestion: First Blood by David Morrell. The source material for the movie of the same name which started that jingoistic film franchise. The novel is far, far superior and reading it will shock fans of the movie. The starting point is pretty much the same: Vietnam war veteran Rambo ends up the prey of a manhunt after an arrest for vagrancy that turned sour. But in the book Rambo is a hippy looking young man severely suffering from PTSD, a trained blood hound turned wild. He's basically an American soldier's version of the monster of Frankenstein, in a story set in rural Kentucky. Gone are his patriotic feelings, instead he has a misplaced survival instinct and acute training that he uses to kill men who are just doing their job. Opposing him is sheriff Teasle, a rigid but overall decent man who made one principled decision and has to deal with its deadly consequences. This is no cheap action thriller, this is proper tragedy.

Enfin.

Future new Deon Meyer

Quick bit of literary news: South African crime writer Deon Meyer is finishing a new novel, featuring reformed alcoholic and elite police officer Bennie Griessel. It will be released in Afrikaans in October this year, then around mid 2019 in English, French and other translations mid-2019. I cannot believe I will have to wait that long. Anybody else excited?

ROAR

Little Wolfie always needs new clothes, it is as if he is eating them. So sometimes, when I stop at the Morrisons near my working place, I go quickly to the children section and see what I can find. Which is generally not much. But yesterday, I found a tshirt that was reduced by 50%, at £2.50 only, which is in itself a real bargain and a good enough reason to purchase it. But I chose this tshirt in particular because of what it had on it: in capital letters, the word ROAR. And this is so like my son that I had to buy it. One of his favourite games with me is hide on say one side of his cot or a table, and me jumping at home going "roar!" like some wild beast or some monster. He laughs so hard and then he say... "roar!" So he was meant to wear that shirt. I might actually buy a second one.

Manky Franky the stuffed stag

Remember the mysterious stag's head at the local White Stuff shop? I blogged about it before (twice actually). Well, it turns out the stuffed head has a name: Manky Franky. Or Franky for short, he apparently goes by his second name. We went there last weekend and little Wolfie got fascinated by it and kept pointing at the head. One of the staff, I think she was the manager, told him: "Oh, so you like Franky. His full name is Manky Franky, but just call him by his second name." So the mystery of the stag's head is partially resolved. The stag has a name, and a certain personality, sort of. I must say I quite like that name.

Musing about August

Today we are the first of August. I usually quote a certain epic poem, but not today. I will merely mention the obvious: August is here. I used to dislike the month. Something to do with childhood: it was the last month of the holidays, the last month of summer, August is the month of dread and impending doom. Well, not so much this year. I think I have made peace with the month, almost to the point of liking it. Because I don't go to school anymore, I don't have this feeling of dread. And, while I often have holidays in August, they also start in August now, so it brings a certain anticipation.. And since I have become fed up with summertime and hot weather, I don't dread the month as much as see it as a promise to an autumn to come. I may feel melancholic, but hopefully it will be good melancholia.

Abibliophobie
