The Icebox

The Icebox is the new nickname I gave to my work office. Because these days, it is so darn cold! The outside temperature is really low, for England anyway, and thus in buildings where isolation is bad, it gets extremely cold. I can endure the outside temperature. Inside, I find it more difficult. So since yesterday I have been wearing an old fleece at work and been drinking lots of hot tea, because like I said yesterday, it keeps me warn. I am up to three cuppa a day. I should survive.

Time for cream tea

It has been a very long time since we've been to Wallingford and I miss it. It has also been a long time since we've been to the Bean & Brew there, one of the best coffee houses I have ever been to. They serve a traditional cream tea, with scones, clotted cream, jam and well, tea (from Tea People) that would be perfect for this time of year. The weather is really nasty outside: cold and wet, or cold and dry. Which means that I need sugar to keep my endorphin level up and hot tea to keep warm. I kid you not: it works. Try a proper cream ta on a cold day, with plenty of tea to accompany the scones, and you will be warm and happy for the day.

Burgess 101

Yesterday was the birthday of Anthony Burgess, my favourite writer. I wanted to mention on the day, but I had too little time in a very busy Sunday. And last year was his 100th birthday, so obviously this year is a bit quieter in the celebration of his birth, comparatively. Nevertheless, I hope I can commemorate a bit more in the upcoming weeks by blogging about some of his work.

Besoin d'un foyer...

...

Ten years of blogging

I nearly forgot about it. In fact, I thought it was going to be tomorrow, but I found out today and this decided to commemorate and celebrate: it is the 10th anniversary of Vraie Fiction. Ten years ago, at exactly 21:41, i.e. right now, I was publishing my very first post. I had started this blog while unemployed, bored and down and out. It kept me active, it kept me sane, it also allowed me to ramble and share thoughts at will. I found blogging exhilarating and very good for morale. So here's to me and, more importantly, to the blog.

Cornish Red Ale

This was tonight's poison, another nice little discovery from Marks & Spencer. I quite like their selection of beers. The Cornish Red Ale was nothing fantastic, but it was an honest beer and it had a nice colour, rusty red as I prefer my beers to look like. On a cold night like the ones we have now, it is a homey and warming beer. And it reminded me that I have yet to visit Cornwall. Apparently, it is not an easy place to get to and, once there, to get around. Nevertheless, it remains on my traveling list. It is meant to look lovely. I sure could try their beers while sightseeing.

Trackers by Deon Meyer

I have read all but one Deon Meyer books and I will read his latest one as soon as I am in the mood for scifi. These days, I am reading crime fiction and thought I would recommend to my readers one of my favourite of Meyer's crime novels: Trackers. It is in fact three novels in one and has three protagonists, in three parallels stories that interlace to finally unite in one single plot as the novel goes on: bodyguard for hire Lemmer (his second appearance), Mat Joubert (former cop now private investigator, also his second appearance in Meyer's novels as a protagonist) and Mila Strachan, former housewife who walks out of an abusive relationship to stumble into an espionage plot by finding a new career. Because this is as much a spy novel as a crime one. My favourite part is still the one featuring Lemmer, as he is my favourite character. Cold, professional, principled, but with a chip on his shoulder and haunted by a troubled past, trouble goes after him and it makes for gripping drama and plenty of violence. This time, trouble takes the turn of a mission to smuggle two endangered rhinos, but nothing is as it seems. It turns out to be a bloody affair. I want to re-read every Meyer novels and Trackers most of all.

Rustic sticky toffee pudding

My readership knows my obsession about sticky toffee puddings, which I ended up giving to my whole family. A few weeks ago, when I went to The Frog, the charming little pub in the village of Skirmett, this is what I had for dessert. It's now almost a given that it will be my dessert of choice. I am always on the lookout for the best one. I am not sure if the pudding from The Frog was the best, but it was lovely in its simplicity: thick, hearty, devoid of custard or ice cream or whipped cream, or anything distracting. It was, in essence, an essential, bare, rustic if you will, sticky toffee pudding. Just the way they should always be.

An anarchist in the library

My wife and little Wolfie went to the local library two days ago, for a special storytelling activity for children. We want him to love books and know about them from a very early age and so far it has worked very well. Wolfie loves books, even my own and he loves spending time in the library. But the storytelling activity was meant for older children, or at least this is the impression my wife had, as our son quickly lost interest in the story told and started pulling books and DVDs off their shelves. He also tried to walk behind the counter. And he even had a partner in crime, another child a bit older than him, who decided to join in the fun. This anecdote has a few interesting points: 1)walking brings all sort of new excitements in parental life, 2)it may be wise that Wolfie does not go in nursery to stir trouble on a daily basis, and 3)our son truly is an agent of chaos, and he may grow up to be an intellectual anarchist.

The 39 Steps

You were wondering maybe what I bought with my five pounds voucher from the local bookshop. Or maybe you couldn't care less, but I will tell you anyway: three books, among them The Thirty-Nine Steps by John Buchan. I read Buchan before and, while I was not overly impressed and found him a bit dated, I enjoyed it enough so decided to give his work another go. Also, I was always curious about this novel of his in particular. It had numerous adaptations, direct or indirect, including this one, which I saw, one by Alfred Hitchcock which I did not see, and I know it was an indirect inspiration for North By Northwest, which I love. In any case, I enjoy adventure novels and spy thrillers so should at least get some fun from this book.

Have a Kit Kat (with peanut butter!)

Sometimes there are weird things that just work. Take the traditional Kit Kat bar for instance: it's a biscuit bar disguised as a chocolate bar and it's a good enough dessert and a delicious if not very filling snack. My wife loves them, I like them. But they introduced a number of variants to the bar, among them, the Kit Kat with peanut butter. As my readers know, I have during weekdays a bit of a beaver's diet: to get through my working days, I need some food that gives me endorphin and energy. Thus, I need something sugar. This specific variety gives a bit more energy, thanks to the peanut butter. And it even tastes just right, to my great surprise. I love peanut butter, but I am always skeptical to add it to a dessert or indeed anything sweet. This time, it worked, it even gives a smoothness which the normal Kit Kat is devoid of. It may not be my favourite chocolate bar, but I will have it from time to time when I need an energy boost.

Gargoyle holding a candle

I took this picture at my parents' home. This is one of the many gargoyles my brothers and I have. It is not mine specifically, I don't know whose is it, but after all these years, they are more or less a common property. I love all our gargoyles, but this one has something special: it is also a candlestick. The candle has been lit at least once, although I don't remember when, or if I have seen it at all. It is an old fashioned candle which fits the beast nicely. It is on display in the basement's living room, right were we play D&Dr, with other similar critters and ornaments. The gargoyle gives a nice bit of atmosphere to the place and the games and always fires up my imagination. I would like to see the candle lit once, but the surroundings in complete darkness, just to appreciate how the gargoyle looks in  the dim light. It must be quite eerie.

Miss Scarlet rolls first!

Once upon a time, my brothers and I used to play Clue/Cluedo every weekend afternoons, sometimes evenings too. It was, it is still, one of my favourite board games, the one crime fiction story that never disappointed, because the resolution was always different every time you played it. Playing between ourselves, we learned the rules in details. Playing with others, we discovered that nobody else had bothered reading the rules and were just playing using common rules from other board games. There is one in particular that is often disregarded: unlike other board games, where the one that makes the highest roll on the dice plays first, in Clue it is Miss Scarlett (or Scarlet, as the American version of the game spells her name) who makes the first move. Then Colonel Mustard, then whoever. Don't ask me why it is Miss Scarlett. Because lady's first, because she is also a femme fatale and the other women on the board rather plain looking, in any case this is something that must be respected.

Creepy Punch & Judy

I blogged before about Punch and Judy, the British puppet show. I took this picture at the York Castle Museum. It was not the first time I could see good old and old-fashioned puppets, but I don't think I had ever seen one so old as them before. And something struck me: Punch and Judy puppets are really creepy, with their deformed features, polished skin and big heads. I mean really, really, really creepy. I don't find them funny at all and I doubt children do either, nowadays. These ones might have been the cause of many nightmares. What do you think?

A Mysterious Door in Totnes

Back in 2009, I blogged about  mysterious door in a park. I am fascinated by old doors on old buildings, especially doors which seems to have been left out of use for a long, long time. So I took this picture in Totnes in Devon and I cannot remember exactly if it was a door or a building mentioned in any of the tourist leaflets we had (my wife would probably know), but I know I took the picture because I loved the look of that imposing old door. And because it looks quite mysterious.

Quand vient l'inspiration

£5 on a book

It has been a month already (and a bit more) that I got a five pounds voucher at the local bookshop, as I am a loyal customer. I have yet to spend it. In fact, I did not pay a proper visit to our beloved local bookshop since that day. Which is borderline terrible, as a book lover and someone who loves to encourage local businesses. What it also means is that I still have to spend that voucher on a book. Which is always very exciting and a good excuse as any to go to the bookshop this weekend. Any suggestion as to what I should buy?

Question existentielle (321)

Wednesday 14 February 2018

"Love is a thief, a serpent..."

It is Valentine's Day, a day I never liked much: when you are single it is depressing, when you are in a relationship it is stressful. That said, as it is the day of love, let us look at one aspect of it, rather than celebrate it. I usually share one song on Valentine's Day, this year it will be from Cosi fan tutte of Mozart. I developed a fascination for this opera, which is about the fleeting aspect of love, its capricious nature and the duplicity of lovers. Mozart and his librettist Lorenzo da Ponte had no fear of stepping on uneasy territory and no wonder the opera was taboo for so long. But anyway, here is È amore un landrocello (Love is a thief) sung by Anke Vondung as Dorabella.

Snarling wolves

I took this picture at the National Museum of Cardiff. It was one of the most impressive displays of stuffed animals in the museum, although maybe unfair to the wolves: they look nasty and aggressive, very much like the image we have of them in popular, the one of merciless predators, quick to anger. I love wolves, always loved them, and it is no surprise that I call my son Wolfie, little cub wolf and so on. Even when I was a child and I believed the many misconceptions about wolves, I was still fascinated by them. And even though these two wolves look like their monstrous caricature, they are still magnificent beasts.

(Not) The mid-term break (for me)

This week in England, it is the mid-term break for pupils and students. For me, it is just an ordinary week of work. When Wolfie is older, the mid-term break will affect us far more: we will go on holidays then, or will try to. Even if I do not get leave then, the mid-term break will nevertheless affect us directly. Until then, we want to try to take our holidays off peak, when our son is still at a pre-school age.

KiD's DeN

I took this picture at the local White Stuff. I hate shopping everything and everywhere, except books and thus in bookshops, but clothes shopping I maybe hate the most, even when I love the clothes I bought. That said, I have developed a certain curiosity towards White Stuff and their displays (see this post) and I must admit the company managed to make shopping there tolerable and make the place family friendly. Thus, they had there a "Kid's DeN", which little Wolfie was quite curious about, albeit not enough to go in there without his daddy. I thought it was the best place to be in the shop. In fact, I wish they had kid's dens back in the clothes shops I used to be dragged to when I was a child

Changing nationality for the Winter Olympics

Well, it's the Winter Olympics and I have barely noticed. We did not even watch the opening ceremony. I will probably not blog about it much, if at all. That said, my wife said something about it today that deserves to be a great unknown line. Here is the conversation we had:

Her: "You know, for the Winter Olympics I'm Canadian."
Me: "No, you're not! "
Her: "Well my son is so that should count right?"

I don't think it should, just so she can boast that "her" country won a lot of medals. A lot more than Britain generally does for the Winter Olympics anyway. But nice try all the same.

Scary mask

I took this picture at the York Castle Museum. It is another relic from World War 1: a gas mask. More like a hooded mask really. Like many old relics, I am fascinated by it. I know it is meant to be utilitarian, but it looks quite scary nevertheless. Like a villain's mask from the old childhood games we had: the round eyes, the featureless, faceless face... It's not ugly, but not beautiful either. Terrifying even without the context of its use.

Browsers Protest (or why I don't use IE)

One of my former colleagues, when I was working in my old job, made me discover this meme. I thought it was more hilarious and very much accurate, if browsers could talk and do a protest. And it is pretty much how Internet Explorer would behave: slow and dim-witted. There are many versions of the meme, with slight variants, but this one is my favourite so far. And I thought I'd share it with you to give you a good laugh. Moral of the story: that's why I don't use IE.

Je peux me tromper.

The comfort of train stations

I took this picture at the National Railway Museum of York, my favourite museum in the whole world. it was one of the many leisure areas of the place, which were all more or less a reading area. I would have pretty much used them for reading, had I not been so busy visiting the museum. I wonder if it was meant to be like the railway stations of old. I love reading in trains, I love reading in train stations, but there are not so many these days with even moderately comfortable waiting rooms and I don't remember any with sofas in them! And this one even urges people to make ourselves comfortable. If I was living in York, this is where I would spend a lot of my free time: sitting in one of these sofas with a book (about trains of course), then after a few pages I would walk around the NRM. It's my idea of heaven.

Disney: where are the male protagonists?

I took the picture you see from this book. It is not from a Disney movie, but it accompanies this topic very well. My wife recently went with little Wolfie to a special afternoon party for children, where songs from Disney movies were performed. Little girls far outnumbered little boys and they were all disguised as Disney princesses. And something struck her: there are no male characters that are the main protagonists anymore in Disney movies. From what we know, not since The Lion King. Even in Beauty and the Beast, when we'd think both male and female characters share equal billing, the story is told through the eyes of Belle. Maybe this is understandable: the tales they use as source material has female characters as leads, princesses mostly. And yes, I know in fiction, especially for children, too often women are passive and it's well and good that they have more active roles. Be that as it may, my wife finds it frustrating: she has a little boy, she loves Disney movies, she wished she could share this with him, but Disney movies now are made for a young female audience and their nostalgic mummies. And it didn't help that one of these precious little wannabe princesses pushed Wolfie repeatedly as she was dancing. My wife fears that, with so little male characters he can identify himself with, he'd end up bored seeing guys playing mostly second fiddles and will start watching Bond movies with his father instead.

The Sphinx

I took this picture in Derbyshire. I can bet it represents the Sphinx. The Greek monster, with his face mixing leonid and human features. The Sphinx from the myth of Oedipus, who gave a riddle to the hero that made him dictator of Thebes and also thus sealed his doom. I am blogging about it today because I am slowly getting into an Easter mood, as we see more and more displays of Easter in the shops. And I associate Easter with Greek mythology (see this post). I want to go back to it this year and re explore the myth of Oedipus.

"He's going to break hearts"

My wife goes into many baby/toddler classes during the week, where Wolfie proved to be quite popular with the mummies there and the women hosting the events. One in particular finds him utterly adorable. So she said to my wife"He is going to break hearts" which made me all proud. I know I shouldn't be: this is something we often hear about baby boys. But this was also said by two former colleagues a few months ago, a friend of my wife and a few other people, so I think this is not only something they say to be polite, but a true assessment of his utter cuteness and his charm. I am proud because it's true, or at least, it's very likely.

Pulp violence

I haven't put on this blog a cover of Detective Tales for ages, so decided to do one today. This is the cover for the February 1941 issue. Very similar to the one I uploaded in February 2014, which was the February 1940 cover. It has a slightly sinister streak: a secret door made of bookshelves shows starving prisoners. It was accidentally opened by the hero (a private eye?) who is trying to free the damsel in distress, who is a fiesty brunette. Behind them, the villain is holding a revolver menacingly. With his balding head and his goatee, he is a classical looking villain, a bit like an evil librarian. I just love this picture.

Hungry for fish&chips

I took this picture months ago in the nearest pub (or one of the nearest pubs) from our home. These were not the greatest fish and chips I had, but they were quite good and like I expect fish and chips to be in a pub, fatty, with some lemon, tartar sauce and mushy pea to give it a bit of... fruits and vegs? I am blogging about it today because it has been months since I did not eat good fish and chips and I am hungry for them. And it is most likely what I will have for lunch. We are meeting my wife's sister and her boyfriend today in another pub and unless there is something else that catches my attention, I will have fish and chips. Sometimes you just know what you want.

Question existentielle (320)

Mad scientists in training

This is another nostalgia post. I took this picture at the York Castle Museum. It was among the display of children toys and games of old. It's an old chemistry set. I don't know if they still sell them, but when I was a child, so about thirty years ago, I remember a few friends who had such set. They tried to do canon powder and I do remember one trying to make sulfuric acid with it. I did not witness any explosions, but a few chemical reactions resulted in some liquid erupting from the bottle. I never had one myself, sadly, although it might have been better like this. This kind of chemistry set, it's a recipe to create mad scientists.

"Let's hear the tale of Mad King Macbeth..."

There are some interesting things happening this week in Manchester for the theatre lover like myself, and those who love Shakespeare especially. The Anthony Burgess Foundation is hosting a retelling of Macbeth by the Cream-Faced Loons Company. I don't know the Loons, but I know the Foundation and this should be extremely interesting. For the visitors and the residents, you can find the calendar here. Their workshop is already sold out (now that's something I would love to attend). Unfortunately I cannot be there, not on such short notice, but here is the teaser:
