Cheap Thriller

Well, it seems that #Noirvember this might end in a whimper. This is what I am reading these days: The Sain't Getaway, by Leslie Charteris, featuring Simon Templar, AKA The Saint. He is better known for the TV series, but he first existed in novels. This is actually the third Saint adventure I read, the first one was a full novel, the second a short story. I bought this book second hand for a quid. A bargain and, to be honest, I'm glad I didn't have to pay more, as it is rather dated: it is rather verbose for crime fiction, The Saint is a bit too much of a fop for my taste and there are huge leaps of logic that makes it difficult to find the whole thing plausible. Although there is a fair deal of violence, I can't say that it has the merciless kind proper for Noirvember. Worse: the cover picture so far does not seem to have anything to do with the plot. Be that as it may, it cost me a pound so I cannot complain. Wolfie actually chose that one for me: I showed him a couple of books and asked which one I should read, he said: "This one because it looks Christmasee". Must be the snow. It is true that I was thinking it could be a Christmas read, only because of the cover. Well, at least it was cheap, and it is entertaining enough.

Anatomy of a Train

I took this picture about five years ago at the the National Railway Museum of York. I learned on their Facebook page that it will (should?) reopen on the 3rd of December. I'm not sure if I would take the risk so early, but I do hope this will be the next museum we will visit as a family. I think it would fascinate Wolfie. rewatching as I often do the old pictures of our trip, It struck me that he would enjoy the NRM for sometimes different reasons than me. I love what trains and train travels represent at an almost symbolic level. I often blogged about it. I think he will also and especially love the technical aspect of trains. He should really enjoy for instance this steam engine opened up to show its mechanism and how it works. I find it interesting, impressive even, but I am not technical enough to truly appreciate the amount of work and technology that is needed to make such engine possible. Wolfie is very young of course, but he quickly gets that. He's a natural engineer.

Nordic Socks

Some of my readers may have noticed that I am a sucker for warm clothes, especially when winter is on its way. Warm clothes in general and warm socks in particular. It seems that Facebook noticed it as well and it is scary how accurate it is: I just received on my newsfeed some advertisement for Nordic Socks. And I could not help but look at the pictures on the website and I really, really want some. I really am a sucker, excuse the terrible pun.

The Catherine Wheel

You may remember that last year, I blogged about the The Catherine Wheel, a Wetherspoon pub in Henley. Or, more specifically, the sign of The Catherine Wheel in Henley. The reason was simple: it was Saint Catherine's Day and this was an excuse to learn about the saint and why she is associated to this breaking wheel, which is of course an instrument of torture. The name of the pub and the image always intrigued me. Well, today is also Saint Catherine's Day and I am sharing another photo of the ensign of the Catherine Wheel in Henley. I took it back in January this year, during a visit in the town and I have literally been waiting all year to share it with you today (very sad, I know). So here it is. A gloomy image inviting you to go in, eat, drink and be merry. Gory, but cool.

Mafia Inc. for #Noirvember

The month is almost over and thus #Noirvember will also soon be over, but I will carry on enjoying crime fiction for the coming months, in film and book form. And I wanted tonight to plug both a film and a movie for every crime fiction and crime history buffs among you. Although I must quickly give a disclaimer: I have not watched the film yet. I have nevertheless heard good things about it. You may remember some years ago that I blogged about Mafia Inc, non fiction book about the Sicilian mafia and organised crime in Montreal. They made last year a fictionalised movie adaptation of the book, with the same title. You can see the trailer below, with subtitles in English, and it seems quite solid. In any case, it looks like a perfect watch for #Noirvember. I know it is a perfect read.

Cette photo me rappelle donc bien des souvenirs hivernaux.

Meeting over a mince pie

18 years ago today I met my wife. I told the story before, but suffice to say that it was in the uni's hall of residences where I lived and I was eating a mince pie. More details in this post. Every year since that day, I have a mince pie as a dessert. Even though I don't like mince pies all that much. Neither does my wife. I was curious about it back then, or maybe there was a discount on mince pies where I used to shop or something, in any case I had decided to buy some. I cannot remember the brand I got then. This year, I have decided to buy a pack from M&S, because from experience they are among the best of mince pies (although in all those years I cannot honestly say that I have become a connoisseur).

Bookshop Local this Christmas

Christmas is coming, the geese are getting fat, and we are in lockdown. Obviously, I have been unable to go to the local bookshop. But I have seen trending on Twitter, from my local bookshop and others, this image, promoted by Books Are My Bag, encouraging people to shop locally for Christmas and to encourage local businesses, particularly local bookshops. So this is what I intend to do, as much as I can: buy Christmas presents, books and others, from local businesses. I will blog more about it in the upcoming weeks, but until then I thought I,d share the image, because it is very nice and it puts you in a festive spirit.

The Manchurian Candidate for #Noirvember

I know I gave as a reading suggestion The Manchurian Candidate by Richard Condon, back in 2017, but it struck me recently that both the original novel and the movie adaptation (the 1962 one, not the ludicrous remake) would make a great read/watch for #Noirvember. I started reading it back in 2016, a few weeks after the results of the American election, then I kept watching and rewatching the movie. Given the way certain pathetic people are trying to deny the results and are barely hiding their intention to execute a coup d'état, I keep thinking that we should all revisit The Manchurian Candidate. And make sure we never let the spiritual heirs of John and Eleonor Iselin take power again.

The Old Playmobil Castle

Last weekend, Wolfie decided that he wanted to build his old Playmobil castle. I say old, because for a toy, it is indeed quite old: my son received it two years from his maternal uncle, who had first given it to his own daughter. Since our niece is now a young adult he gave us a few buckets of her old toys. Among them, the famous castle. Wolfie had often played with it before, but it was the very first time when he had decided to properly build it, following the plan. I think there are still a few pieces missing, the action figures are mostly gone, that said we managed to do a fairly good job with it, as you can see on the picture. It was not easy, as I am not very technical and not much of an architect (Wolfie is far better, he's a natural builder and he understood the plan very well). It took us the weekend and I was quite proud of the result and of my son even more, even though there were still a few pieces to put on. Unfortunately, the very next day Wolfie walked into my office telling me that he had decided to bring the castle down so he could make room for... another train track. I felt quite sad.

Pizza maison

Allotment Offer

When she got back from dropping Wolfie had preschool yesterday morning, my wife bumped into one of our neighbours, one we don't know much. She was quite chatty and seemed eager to convince my wife to rent an allotment nearby which she is in charge of. The offer is tempting, we would love to grow our own fruits, vegetables and maybe flowers, but we both think we lack time and discipline to take care of an allotment. My wife said that she was suprised the neighbour made this offer, given the sorry state of our front garden. "Anybody who had paid attention to it would know we are ill fit to take care of an allotment." I replied: "Angel, this is proof that nobody cares about our front garden." Which I think deserves to be a new great unknown line. Anyway, the offer is quite reassuring in a way: we can't be that bad gardeners.

Horas Non Numero Nisi Serenas

Well, it is funny how one can find the most fascinating things when you don't expect it. This is what happened recently, when we took a walk in the little town of Marlow. We saw this sundial where you can read in Latin Ne Quid Pereat, which means "let no time be wasted", and Horas Non Numero Nisi Serenas, which means freely translated (and according to a quick Google search): "I don't count the hours unless they are quiet." Or serene, or tranquil. Pick one. In any case, this is a lovely sight in a town that is already very picturesque, and more interestingly an attraction we had never seen before. These are also words of wisdom and I will try to follow the advice.

I, The Jury for #Noirvember

As it is #Noirvember, I am reading a lot of crime fiction. Okay, so I read crime fiction all year round or almost, but #Noirvember (how do you cann it by the way, a hashtag, a social media phenomenon, a festival?) helps me to get through the month like it's no big deal. Anyway, so I am currently reading I, The Jury, the debut novel by Mickey Spillane. It is also the first story featuring private eye Mike Hammer. I must confess, I never read Spillane before, although I had of course heard of him and read a good deal about him. Both good and bad. So far, I am enjoying it a lot. Spillane may not be Chandler or Hammet, but he can write hardboiled and the novel is suitably dark and violent for Noirvember. In fact, this may be one of the most suitable work of crime fiction for the month. A match made in Heaven, or in Hell.

The Fairy Tale Chair

A couple of weeks ago, before lockdown, we went to a children's farm which Wolfie loves quite a lot. We went there to meet (respecting all rules of social distancing of course) the childhood friend of my wife and her family, especially her son little Uber, who is Wolfie's best friend. They have the same age, or thereabout, as Uber is two months younger. It was a horrible day weather wise, pouring down like, but it was very pleasant. And I saw this there, which caught my attention: a wooden chair that almost looked like a throne, facong two benches that looked like mushrooms. I did not what it was, but took a picture anyway, because I thought it looked quite nice in a timeless way.

Then I noticed this paper on the fence behind, with the pink hourglass: this is a Fairy Tale Chair. As the paper explains, you sit on it and let the timer go, and of course you must complete your own fairy tale within two minutes. That is quite a challenge, but it is also very charming. I don't know how popular the Chair is, because it was extremely wet nobody really wanted to sit down there, but I find the idea absolutely sweet as it encourages both children and adults to develop their imagination (and be concise, something I have never been very good at). I don't know when we will go back to the children farm, but I do hope that when we do, the weather will be nicer and that we will take the time to use the Fairy Tale Chair.

Sherlock Holmes for #Noirvember

For my first book to read this year for #Noirvember, I decided to go classical with an early adventure of Sherlock Holmes that I have been wanting to rediscover for a while. I have thus decided to read The Sign of Four (or The Sign of the Four, which is its original title, but I think it sounds lame). I had first read it when I was something like 14 and I had wanted to read it again in the original language. It may sound a bit too old for Noirvember, but rediscovering the work of Arthur Conan Doyle as an adult is one of my ongoing projects, for one, and there is plenty of violence and brutality in it. I also find the character of Jonathan Small to be a very modern and dark character: ruthless and villainous, but with at least some sense of justice and fairness, and some excuse for his actions. He ends up a rather tragic character, come to think of it, and the ancestor of many villainous protagonists in crime fiction. And I cannot forget that this is where Holmes is first depicted as a cocain user. So in many ways, it is very Noir indeed, certainly Noir enough for this month.

Local crime news

As you know, I love crime fiction and because of my love of crime fiction I have also developed a keen interest in crime news, particularly things that involved organised crime. In our quiet little English town, hardly anything happens. Or so I thought, until yesterday, when I read on social that an important police operation had been conducted in the area. Including our quiet little town, where a home was raided. The police has targeted a drug trafficking and money laundering conspiracy. The home they raided here was in the town centre, near the building I used to work. I think there is a story to be told in there. I mean a crime fiction story.

Vendredi 13

Purple Poppies

I mentioned yesterday that we took a walk in the local park, where the fences have been covered by poppies. Red poppies and blue poppies. Being a bit short on time when I wrote the post and horribly lazy, I published the picture of the wall of poppies without checking what the blue poppies meant. Rachel Lucas (AKA Mozart's Girl) commented that the blue poppies are to commemorate the work and sacrifice of the serving animals in wartime. A very kind and thoughtful gesture, as animals have been used and are still used at war and have been the victims of wars. My wife also told me that I should have asked her before posting, because she knew already. Anyway, I managed to do a bit of research after publishing the post and it appears that the colour is not blue but actually purple, it is a purple poppy. For more information on the various remembrance poppies seen on Remembrance Day and their significance, please read this article from the BBC. And I hope you will all commemorate today.

A wall of poppies

There are poppies everywhere these days, which put some crimson colours in November and it is quite pretty. We went to a walk this weekend to a local park, and its fences had been covered by poppies, mostly red, but one row of blue ones (I am sure it means something, but can't be bothered to look it up right this minute. This small English town, like many English towns, take Remembrance Day very seriously.

This Land Is Your Land

Well, I believe this song is in order today, given the news from yesterday. Need I explain more? I don't know Woodye Guthrie, except from a scene I loved in Mrs America, which you can see here, and which in itself shows why this is so fitting and will be for the weeks and years to come.

733

Last visit at the bookshops

Well, when I say the last visit, I don't mean my very last, but the last until the new lockdown, which has started on Thursday. So before lockdown, when I went to buy some extra supplies for the days ahead, I stopped briefly at our local independent bookshop and bought one book, then stopped at the outdoorsy secondhand bookshop and bought another book. The second one cost me £1, so it was not much of an investment, but every little helps. I don't know when I will be there again, but I do want the businesses to survive and thrive, so I did my share. And I know I will need lots of books in the coming weeks of lockdown, so it is not a completely selfless gesture. And I know I will miss the bookshops during lockdown.

Bonfire Night

Remember, remember, the fifth of November... You know the rest. Tonight is Bonfire Night. Well, in spite of the pandemic and the lockdown that started today, the English did not forget. As I am typing this, I can hear fireworks going on nearby. I guess some things never change, no matter what.

Trackers for #Noirvember

I mentioned two days ago #Noirvember, which made me at peace with a cold, dark and dreary month to the point of embracing it. Well, almost embracing it. But anyway, I got some good news recently which should put anyone in the spirit of #Noirvember: the novel Trackers by South African crime writer Deon Meyer will very soon be available in the UK. This Friday and on Sky Atlantic, to be precise. Which unfortunately I do not have Sky. It is a shame, as remembering how good the novel is, it would be perfect for #Noirvember. It has bodyguard Lemmer as one of the main protagonists and he's maybe my favourite character created by Meyer. The plot mixes both elements of crime and spy thriller, so there is for everyone's tastes here. Anyway, you can find the trailer on this post, if you want to see what it looks like.

About a Troll

It is election day in the USA and I do not intend to dwell on it. I hope for the best, but fear the worst. I don't like to blog about politics much here, but I thought I would reshare an anecdote which has been on my mind quite a lot recently. Some of you may remember, but the last troll who commented on this blog was a Trump supporter (and I believe a female, do we call them Trumpets?). Anyway,I had made that filthy joke upon his inauguration and someone in the comment section called Lynney62 had written this diatribe (you can read the full post and the exhange here):

"Sad that you are filled with such ugliness and hatred that you can't appreciate a momentous day in America's great Republic of freedom. If you dislike the historical ceremonies of America so much...why are you living in this country? Wouldn't you be happier in some other country such as Venezuala or France?"

Now this is, in a nutshell, what is wrong about the most ardent supporters. Bad English, for one (what the hell is a "Republic of freedom"), the vitriolic accusations, the ignorance (I do not live in the US) and making the equivalence between the leader, the ideology and the nation. For Lynney62, an American, or at least a good American, is and should be a Trump supporter or else. For the others, they are bad patriots at best, traitors in fact, and they can go to other countries. You know, the bad ones. Not like the Republic of freedom. Whatever the result of the elections, Lynney62 will still be around, sadly. But I do hope that at least sanity and intelligence will prevail and that trolls such as her will not have their way in the real world. They can always comment on this blog, and it will be my pleasure to make fun of them.

#Noirvember

Since 2018, I have discovered #Noirvember (via Twitter), which basically is a "campaign" to make one read and watch crime fiction. #Noirvember has almost singlehandledly made me at peace with a month I used to dislike (because it is right after Halloween and so far away from Christmas). So this month I will binge on crime fiction (and might blog about it a fair deal, be warned) and I am already looking forward to it. So however dreary and gloomy November may be, bring it on, I'm ready for it.

Post-Halloween blues

Well, here we go again, All Saint's Day, so I have my post-Halloween blues. As usual. The beginning of November always does that to me, but I will try to beat it as soon as possible. I will let you know how I do it in future posts, but give me your suggestions in the comments if you have any. I have actually got better at it and made peace with the month of November. Also, at least this year the first of the month comes on a Sunday, so it should go more easily than last years. All the same though: I got the post-Halloween blues.
