Back from the land of the red dragon

We are back from a short holiday break in Cardiff, the capital of Wales. Their emblematic red dragon is everywhere: on the flag of course, which is also everywhere, but also on drink mats, postcards, t-shirts, cushions, rubbish bins, bottle openers, pencils, footballs and of course monuments. I had wanted to go back to Wales for a long while and I am glad it is done, it was nice to get in touch with the Welsh people, which I have always been quite fond of. However, I must confess that Cardiff as a whole did not impress me as much as I wished. It was my second visit to the city and maybe my memory had idealized it but I found it far dirtier than I remembered. It did not look nice everywhere, in fact I often found it ugly. But hey, it is still in the land of myths and legends and just for this I was so glad to be there. And we had a nice time. That said, when I revisit the land of the red dragon, it will probably be in a more rural area.

A feline birthday card

One thing I had forgotten to share about my 40th birthday a while ago is this birthday card from Blonde Tickler. She knows and shares my love for cats and my particular fondness for black cats, so she made me this very special, personalized birthday card. Of all the things I received, this might have been the one that moved me the most. That she spent such time and effort does not surprise me, after all she wrote with her friend the Wolfie Booklet. All the same, this is so very, very cute (and in colour!).

One year of the local bookshop

As I mentioned recently, the local bookshop celebrated its first year of existence. Its official date was yesterday, even though it opened in August last year. So, while my wife was having afternoon tea (coffee actually, she hates tea) with a friend, I went to little Wolfie to make a few anniversary purchases. I behaved myself, nevertheless I bought a few books. I thought it would have been rude otherwise, and there was a 20% discount on all purchases. I was so happy to see that Wolfie was actually enjoying himself tremendously. In his first visits, when he was two months' old or so, he was often crying, sometimes screaming like a banshee. Now he finds the place familiar I think. The staff also finds him adorable. They also appreciate the visits of faithful client I have become. They don't even need to find my name in the system to give me my loyalty points. And even with the discount, I still managed to earn a five pounds voucher for my next purchase.

An embarrassing moment...

Being a parent brings a lot of surprise and funny moments, but also some embarrassing ones. I speak from experience: something very funny yet mortifying happened a few days ago. We were at the opticians and Wolfie grabbed the bum of a woman (late 20s, early 30s) shopping for glasses. Thankfully she found him very cute. But his mummy and daddy wanted to run away out of embarrassment. Cheeky boy (no pun intended).

Autumn getting (slightly) closer

I don't know if it is because of the recent heatwave, but it seems that since the summer solstice the season's ungodly tropical weather burned out completely. It is still warm, it is still summery, but you feel it far less. And since the longest day of the year, evening is coming a tiny bit earlier. We will only see the change much later of course, but with the drop in temperature it made me more aware of this and it gives you the illusion that autumn is nearer than it is. But autumn is nevertheless getting closer, ever so slightly. I mentioned in March a countdown to autumn. I am very much living it at the moment. The recent ordeal of the heatwave was truly midsummer, the peak of the season. There might be more of course, but it will not spoil my enjoyment of the cool breeze I felt this evening and its promise of things to come.

Time for a Smuggler

I took this photo last year in a local pub. I thought I'd blog about beer tonight, it has been a while. My readership knows that I love the products of Rebellion Beer. One of my favourite during summertime is the Smuggler. I blogged about it briefly in 2013. The beer is available all year round, but its name and look fits summer far more than any other time of year. It is a darker ale, but what's to say that you should only drink insipid blondes during the sunny season? Smuggler is good whether it is sunny or not, for one. And it has plenty of character, something many summer drinks lack. Anyway, I did not drink this one in a while and I miss it, so I should correct this soon.

Wolfie and the trees

A little anecdote about our son I wanted to share: when we take him on a walk in his pram, he often looks at the trees above and smiles at the branches and leafs, especially when there is a gentle breeze moving them. There is nothing else I wanted to say, only mention here that he smiles and gives the cutest giggle of happiness. I don't know why, but I think Wolfie might be showing a certain family trait when he does this.

Time for cocktails?

I had this cocktail, a Porn Star Martini, at York. I cannot remember the name of the pub, but it was a hip, trendy pub, which explains why they were serving such abomination and not proper, good, honest English beers. It goes with a shot of Champagne or Prosecco (in this occasion the latter), which I can enjoy by itself, although with this it is downright bizarre. That said, since it is summertime now, it is the season of cocktails. Seriously, I cannot imagine drinking a cocktail any other time of year. It has to be on a hot summer day. It just has the right colour and taste for the season, although when it's hot the alcohol goes straight to your head and then the taste must mess up your stomach. I have yet to find a cocktail I enjoy, if you have any suggestions, tell me.

I went to the market (mon p'tit panier sous mon bras)

Summer starts, summer ends

I know my readers have heard this confession before, but I must say it here: since my professional life is not based on the school year, I don't like summer much. Too hot, too sweaty, too sticky, too uncomfortable and, worst of all, the nights are far too short and thus I sleep too little. Back when I was living with my parents, summer was idyllic: with the swimming pool most of the downsides of the season were alleviated. And I could just relax all day. Nowadays... Well, all this to say that today is the summer solstice. The official beginning of the summer, although let's be honest here, summer truly starts with June, not with the solstice. The solstice is in fact midsummer. I actually welcome midsummer. It is the longest day of the year, which means the days will gradually, slowly, imperceptibly for a good while, get shorter. So it is in a way the beginning of the end. And this, ironically, makes me appreciate summer more.

Our neighbours the bats

A few days ago, because the heat was keeping us all awake, we decided to take some fresh air in the not so early evening, which did us the greatest good, especially to Wolfie who had been quite cranky until then. The sun was finally falling and it was far more comfortable outside than inside. We chatted to our next door neighbours, a woman in her 40s-50s and her 20 year old daughter. They are moving away soon so we will have new neighbours, which is sad as they are very nice. During the conversation, the daughter noticed that there were bats flying around. We then took attention to our surroundings and saw their swift  little shadows in the evening light. And it made me very happy. There were bats where we used to live before and trying to get a glimpse of them was part of the wildlife watch fun I used to have when we lived there. I love bats, they are mysterious and they eat insects so I am glad we have them here as well. So even though some nice human neighbours are leaving, at least we have bats. It might sound silly, it probably is, but their presence is familiar and reassuring, like reliable old friends.

First day of the swimming pool (in a nutshell)

The heatwave is going in full swing and I sorely miss the family swimming pool. I blogged about it here. But it is about a particular memory of our swimming pool I think about today: the day we opened it and we suddenly had many, many friends. We were one of the first family in the neighborhood to buy one, so you can imagine the attraction it created. It was very much like the episode Bart of Darkness in The Simpsons. Back when they were both funny and relevant. Anyway, I have uploaded here the clip which illustrates in a nutshell what the first day owning a functional swimming pool looks like. It's funny because it's true.

Farewell to Café Venosa

Sometimes you intend to blog about things later and you lose the opportunity. And then when the opportunity is gone, it is because your subject of blog post no longer exists, and this is very sad. I had been wanting to plug Café Venosa since I discovered it during my time in Montreal in 2015. It became my favourite spot in Montreal: a vegan café that is also... a cats residence. I completely fell in love with it and I had been wanting to visit it with my wife and little Wolfie, who turned out to be a cat lover already. But I learned on their Facebook page that they had recently declared bankruptcy. I am very sad. Through adoption, they found homes for many cats and in the meantime gave them a safe haven in a place where they were truly worshiped. And I have never been in such a relaxed, welcoming café. You can see on the left a picture of Kioshi, who was quite fond of my coat when I went there: he sat and lay on it for ages during my last visits. To thank me for my kindness and patience towards him, one of the staff gave me a free pastry. They knew how to make their clients welcome. I have a few more anecdotes from the place and had wanted to write a long blog post with many pictures. Not sure if it is worth it now. In any case, a picture of the aloof Kioshi will do for the time being.

Heatwaves in the basement

We are in the middle of a heatwave here. One of the reasons why I dislike summer. It is sticky, it is too hot, little Wolfie struggles to sleep and so do we. i was discussing this with my brother PJ recently and he reminded me of the old days of our childhood, before the time of air con. When we were young and there was a heatwave, my parents used to prepare the basement for us to sleep in it. The basement in our home remained naturally cool through summer and it was lovely. As we were also sleeping in the living room, that was the occasion to watch TV late. Those were the days! I might come back to blog about these times, but right now suffice to say that I wish we had a basement here these days.

"I Love My Daddy"

Well, I do love my daddy, but I am quoting because this is also the title of a book I received today for Father's Day. My very first Father's Day as a father and my very first present, ex aequo with this other one. I was very moved. The book is about a child that is a bit older (and with a pet/plush) rabbit, but a lot of it is very accurate already.

About Punch and Judy

I took this picture at the main park of this town during one of the last local fayres. You can easily recognize the Punch and Judy booth. I am uploading it tonight because it struck me: during all my years in England, I never ever sat to watch and pay attention to a full live show of Punch and Judy. This quintessential British institution. Well, I say this and it is not really accurate: we have of course an equivalent in French culture which I am very familiar with and this all comes from Italy originally anyway, but in its British form I have never enjoyed one yet. Shame on me, because it is something that normally really appeals to my imaginative mind and the child in me. I intend to correct it as soon as possible.

Tu cours, pis t'as jette".

The quest for a hat

This is something I have been thinking about for quite a while: for a hot and sunny summertime, shades are not enough. I have decided that I need a hat. I never wore something on the head during summertime since when I was a child and was not ashamed to wear a baseball or a golf cap. But now I want a proper hat. So I have decided to look for one. I have no idea where to find a good one and what would look nice, i.e. that would not make me look like Gilligan. Any idea? Or is wearing a hat too old/old fashioned for a middle aged man nowadays?

Devil of a State

As we are still celebrating the 100th year of the birth of Anthony Burgess, my favourite writer, and as it is summer here, I thought I would make a summer read suggestion about one of his lesser known novel, Devil of a State. That it sounds like an essay about the result of UK's last elections is just a happy coincidence. The state in question is the fictitious Dunia in Africa. Muslim country run by a Caliph, the story is set on in the time before the opening of the new mosque. The (anti)hero is British passport officer Francis Lydgate, accidental bigamist, father of children from an African mistress/concubine, lost in the chaos of post colonial Africa. Tensions and struggles between Europeans, Australians and the native population, between a fallen British Empire and a country not ready but eager for independence, between all sorts of political ideologies and races, make for a hilarious dystopian tragicomedy. You also have two Italian marble workers, father and son, also in conflict, beer drinking in the mosque, rumors of head shrinking in the jungle, an uranium mine, religious zealotry of all faiths, this is a dense book and truly a devil of a state.

Last day at the office tomorrow...

Tomorrow is my last day at work. Then I take two weeks of holidays, then I start my new job, which I am quite excited about. Unlike my old school jobs from a few years ago, I do not feel bitter about losing this one, even though it was caused by redundancy. Seven years ago, when I learned that I was going to get it, I was both anxious and happy: it was going to be a decent income after a string of badly paid work, and it was leading to permanence after two years of contractual and often part-time jobs. And, even though redundancy is a form of dismissal, it's not like I'm getting fired. I am parting with my current employer in good terms, working there gave me experience and skills which I can transfer and which actually impressed my new employers enough to give me the position almost straight away. So I will be a bit nostalgic tomorrow, but also grateful for the time there.

Celebrating the local bookshop

Great bit of local news: the town's independent bookshop will soon celebrate its first year of opening! They will start celebrating a bit earlier than the official opening, which was in August, but never mind, they decided to start the party from the time the project was announced which is fair enough. So it has been nearly a year and they will be offering in a few days a 20% voucher for the occasion. It would be rude not to go. I am ever so grateful to have a local independent bookshop. It really made this town/village whole and made me love it more. In fact, it is maybe the one local business that really made me feel like I belong to this town and made me feel proud about it.

Wolfie and the sheep

Last Sunday at the regatta, there were a number of displays, among them some mini-zoo or animal garden or whatever you call it. Basically a place with farm animals: goats, ponies, rabbits, ducks, hens, etc. We thought it would be a great experience for Wolfie to see real animals in the flesh so we went there. Here he is with me holding him, watching the sheep display. He was very much fascinated. The goats were maybe his favourite, but we could not get a good photo with them. But I thought this one was sweet so I decided to share it here.

The blue eyed wolfpack

We went to the local regatta on Sunday, when it was quieter (the day before is for drunkards, Sunday is the regatta for families and hungover people). When we were walking around the park, my wife saw some fellow mummies she knows from her postnatal groups, their partners and of course their children, all around Wolfie's age, so we ended up with them, on the picnic blanket, chatting about parental life, the children socializing with each other in their own way. There were two boys including Wolfie and two little girls, one dressed on blue with a cute blue hat and one, smaller but older than Wolfie, who could already walk and who cried a lot when my son bumped his head into hers. But anyway, something struck me at one point: they were all sitting on the blanket, all four, and they all had blue eyes! That was striking. So it was like a bunch of wild wolf cubs with blue eyes.

"Dead Before Dying" (crime read for the summer)

In the afternoon hush of the last day of the year, Mat Joubert thought about death. Mechanically his hands were busy cleaning his service pistol, the Z88. He sat in his sitting-room, leaning forward in the armchair, the parts of the pistol lying on the coffee-table in front of him among rags, brushes and an oil can. A cigarette in the ashtray sent up a long, thin plume of smoke. Above him, at the window, a bee flew against the glass with monotonous regularity, in an irritating attempt to reach the afternoon outside where a light southeaster was blowing.

Summer is in full swing and I started reading crime fiction. As I mentioned here, I have started Dead Before Dying by Deon Meyer. First novel, but if you read the first paragraph above you wouldn't tell. I have decided to read this book in particular because nothing is more summery than a crime story set during summertime in Africa. With Meyer you can so easily feel the heat and the danger looming. Oh yes and the book is the inspiration for a TV series which I hope I can find here.

Question existentielle (306)

Another quiet regatta?

This is the annual local regatta this weekend, where boats will race on the Thames and people will get drunk in fancy dresses and suits. This is what usually happens anyway and one of the reasons why I don't like the event much. Read my post here for more details why. Last year has been quieter, to my surprise and relief. More police presence apparently calmed people down. This year's regatta seems to be going the same way: we went to the town center this afternoon and, while we saw a few people drinking, there was no drunkenness. The streets were also mainly walked by "normal" people, nobody in evening suits or elegant dresses but locals doing their normal weekend business. Of course we don't live near the town center anymore, so we are away from the heart of the (potential) storm. Tonight might be different. So I am glad we don't live nearby anymore.

Bisons verts

Travel food from LEON

One of the fun things about going to job interviews in far away places and having to take a long train journey is to treat yourself to a yummy lunch on the way back. This is what I do anyway and this is what I did a month ago or so when I went to that job interview. I did not get the job, but when I was waiting for my transfer at a train station I discovered LEON, a "natural" fast food chain. I had their chicken burger, with fries and Coca Cola. I did not get the job (but it's ok because I have another one), but at least I enjoyed that meal.

Ticking clock...

I am a little bit in limbo these days: I have only a few days left in my current job and then it is over, I am officially redundant... for that one. But there is a new job waiting for me already. And there will be quite a few days in between when I will be on holidays. There are exciting times ahead, until then, or at least until the holidays, I am looking at the clock.

Risk

I saw this a few months ago at WHSmith: a good old box of the classic Risk board game, with an epic cover image. I was tempted to buy it, but didn't in the end: there aren't really anybody I could play at Risk with. Now this is not my favourite board game, nevertheless it has a special place in my heart. Back in the days before video games and before I started doing role playing games, there was a time when Risk was one of the main source of fun on a rainy summer day. I remember how excited my brothers and I were when we first discovered that my parents had a box. We played so many times then, the three of us or with friends, after my father explained the rules to us. I don't know what attracted us to it, if it was the megalomania by proxy that the game makes us feel, or hidden violence (we play a world war after all, with world domination as a goal), but did we enjoy playing! I would still love to have a go at it one day.

The quest for a tea mug

I struck me today when I was getting myself my first cup of tea of the day: I use the one available for us at work, but I have no special tea mug for the working place. I will change job very soon, in a much smaller company that does not provide mugs, so I must bring my own. While we have many here, I thought it might be nice to buy a mug especially for work. Something that looks nice, but not too fancy (i.e. expensive) because it is only for the simple (yet so important) cuppa at work. And cuppa is the word of the day. It simply means cup of tea. So anyway, please give me suggestions if you have any, what brand should I buy or where to find it.

"Dark. With stripes."

Sometimes I need to shop for clothes. Like these days: my oldest t-shirts are from 2007 and the most recent from 2014 or thereabout. I hate shopping in general and for clothes in particular, but I do enjoy for some mysterious reasons products from Mountain Warehouse. More about this unusual disposition here. Luckily enough there is one that opened in town last year, so yesterday we went there. Another good thing about Mountain Warehouse is that I find what I really want within seconds or almost. And my wife can spot them too. She pointed me to the polos and t-shirts I would have. When I asked how did she know it is what I was looking for, she simply said: "Because it's dark. With stripes". This is not the first time she tells me this, but this deserves to be a new great unknown line. She really knows what I like. So we ended up spending ten minutes there. I prefer shopping when it is quick and fruitful.

Banana split

These days are time for ice cream and sundaes, so we recently went back to Bourne for Desserts to treat ourselves with an icy dessert. I had this banana split (and sorry for the blurry picture). I don't know why, but I was in the mood for one. Hadn't had one in decades. Back in the days, it was my brother Andrew who was quite fond of banana splits. I rationalize the consumption sugary decadence by saying it has one portion of fruit and that it has plenty of dairy product, which is good for bones. I mean surely this is as healthy as a dessert can be, right? I didn't allow Wolfie to have any, but he was quite curious. Must be the banana that caught his attention.

Cool cats

You know that Blonde Tickler gave me a drawing recently. well, she also gave one to my wife. As we are cat lovers, she draw cats: ballet dancer cat, doctor cat, angel cat and... UFO, space cat? Whatever the one in the flying saucer is, this was so cute that I had to share it.

"September is coming"(?)

This was the subject title of an automated email I received from one of the job sites I am registered to. Apparently, they are looking for teachers in various schools around the area for the next school year. I thought it was strange, receiving such email so early, but it makes sense. Except that I am no longer a teacher, so it does not concern me anymore. A few years ago, such a reminder of the end of holidays would have made me feel really low. Not as bad as a "Back to School" message, but still. Now, it just reminds me that autumn will come eventually and that I should be patient, as it might not be so far away... And I am okay with that.

Jungle Animals?

I took this picture last year. One of my colleagues had bought this for her son. Something struck me and being sort of academic about these kinds of things, I mentioned it right away: "This display is all wrong: elephants, giraffes and lions live in the savanna, not the jungle, and tigers don't even live on the same continent!" I could have added that the elephant seemed to be an Asian one. Anyway, one of my colleague teased me about this and said: "I can imagine you refusing to buy your son such a set, because it's not accurate". I would, but would also tell him that these are not all jungle animals. Anyway, I thought that what he said was funny enough to be a great unknown line. Even though I am right.
