My new teas for autumn

My favourite season is right by the corner (I consider September to be the true start of autumn) and thanks for a recent discovery I am prepared for it when it comes to tea. The local Italian shop (of all places) and a local café sell Jollybrew products. Since I tried their teas, it has been a revelation. They have such a nice range. Anyway, after falling in love with them in the local café, I bought in the Italian shops a bag of Scrumptious Spiced Apple and Pukka Pumpkin Spice. The latter is described as "simply autumn in a cup". I tried it and can witness of the veracity of this claim. So I will have what it takes to warm me up and get myself in the autumnal mood.

"Washing up is Zen"

Yesterday, my wife had to spend the night in hospital in case little Wolfie would arrive. Long story short, we had an horrendous day and an exhausting one, and I was home feeling pretty useless. So I decided to do some tidying and washing up. When I said this to my mother, she replied: "Good idea: washing up is Zen!" That is motherly wisdom for you. And she was right, it did calmed me down and I felt like I was being useful. And it is a new great unknown line.

"Ravenscourt"

I was having a walk yesterday and saw this street sign. And I thought: "Wow! This is an uber cool name!" Well, not as cool as the name of Crowthorne, but it is still a really neat address to have. I remembered that one of my friends used to live there. She moved out, but not before offering us to rent it. For various reasons, we didn't. The place was simply too small. Still, what a great name.

San Pellegrino with mint

Since my unfortunate misadventure a month ago with the San Pellegrino Chinotto, I have been wanting to repair this betrayal by drinking one of their lemonades which I had not tried yet. So I bought yesterday in the local Italian shop their lemonade with mint. It was a relief: it's drinkable, delicious and refreshing. I was worried the disgusting Chinotto had put me off the brand forever, or that other varieties could be as bad, this discovery calmed my fears. And mint and lemon just work so well together, especially on a hot day. Even my wife, who does not like fizzy drinks, enjoyed the sip she took of this one.

Wolfie Booklet

Well, as they had promised, the Ticklers wrote a book of rules/guidance for our baby. They slipped it through the mailbox yesterday. They describe it like this in the back page: "This is a book for Caroline and Guillaume telling you all you need to know about ceeping Wolfie happy." I thought I would share it with you, with images from the very book:

Nom 1: Do not I repeat do not send him to XXXX school. (NB: The one where they went to and where my wife used to work.)

Nom 2: VERY Important: If I see Wolfie in crusty sockes I will scream and pull them off!

Nom 3: Do not ever never ever ever ever sware in front of Wolfie. (Guillaume)

Nom 4: Realy seariesly realy realy do not do crav magar or teach Wolfie crav magar coz it is very dangarouse.

Nom 5: Do not drink any achol until Wolfie has moved out! Encagenly when he's out.

Nom 6 (!) So NOT LEVE sharp stuff lying around.

Nom 7: Most important thing ever we are very very very excited to meet Wolfie.
Adorably beautiful Wolfie

Oddly enough, our little wolf looks a bit like a gingerbread man on this picture. But I cannot praise enough this booklet, even though I am meant to keep sober until I am near 60 and need to stop Krav Maga. You can tell it is a labour of love.

Question existentielle (290)

To or For?

This is a great unknown line from my brother PJ, which he shared on Facebook. A colleague asked him: "Do we say a pre-requisite "to" or "for" something?" My brother's answer: "A pre-requisite three something. When in doubt, take the average". That really made me laugh. You can see he studied mathematics and statistics.

Papa loup

The Great Outdoors

Again, I took this picture from the Facebook page of David's Tea. It is basically advertising their autumnal products with a forest and camping theme this year, with pine cones, bears and everything. Because yes,the season has already arrived at David's Tea, so for the lucky tea lovers who have one nearby, it is time to stock up and get yourself into an autumnal mood. I have to say, the designs as usual are great (albeit maybe not as great as last year) and the blends are intriguing (among them we can find good old classics). With the cupboards of my new home, there is some room for new mugs. And there is always room for more brews. But I will need to find somewhere my autumnal teas.

New little critter

My readership knows my fascination for little anthropomorphic fur balls (I don't know how you call them) which are used as promotional material for businesses and organizations. My last acquisition was Professor Red, which my wife brought to me from one of those jobs fairs. We found this one, the latest one in my collection, in a kiosk outside John Lewis (I think) from the Southern Central Ambulance Service. My wife was very embarrassed when I chatted to the volunteers there because she knew I had my eyes set on the little thingie. He's quite cool, with his many colours and the ambulance frame in front of him (or her?). I haven't found a name for it yet. Any suggestion?

This English village

There is something new I learned not long ago about the town where I live: it could actually qualify as a village. I always thought it was a small(ish) town, but because of the relatively small amount of population in the last census, smaller than some other settlements that are labeled villages, it could as easily be one. And thinking about it, I thought it makes it even more charming that I live in an English village. And a typical one at that, if such place still exists: I was walking near the train station with my wife this weekend when she pointed to the red phone box, the one of the first things you see when you leave the place and she said: "Look, this is so British!" If even a British woman finds a place so British... It has to be very British indeed. And thus, not knowing it, my wife said a great unknown line. Anyway, town or village, I grew very fond of this place and I am happy to label it an English village.

Mont-Royal Hot Dog

The Back to School dread

I took this picture yesterday, on the shop window of Tinc. It was not nearly as bad as last year, with the atrocious "Glow Back to School" word play that was just rubbing it in. All the same, I know I am an adult and thus should not feel like it, but at the end of August, when I see such window in the town center, I feel the blues and a certain dread. And they advertise it everywhere. I remember my dad asking me when I was a child if I was looking forward to go back to school and he always received a grumpy answer. Not that I was bad at school or anything, I just didn't want to be there. It was only in cégep (college for Anglo-Saxon countries) that I started looking forward to the beginning of the school year. But that is for another blog post (although I am sure I blogged about it before). Now I wanted to mention that I hate seeing these kinds of shop windows around this time of year.

First time at the local bookshop

Well, as I had been wanting to do since I learned that it was finally open, I went to the local bookshop today. They had been open for less than a week, but it felt to me like I had waited far too much. It is still very new: there is no chair to sit on, no clear indication or label to identify the sections, the choice is still relatively limited, etc. All the same, I bought four books and could have bought more (and I will). I am already on their database to receive my loyalty card and I received a complimentary bag with the purchases. I was ready to pay for the bag, but apparently it was a special promotion for their opening time. So I had a great time there and I suspect they'll soon know me by my name.

A duet from Cosi fan tutte

Since I watched Cosi fan tutte in the local park two months ago, I have been rediscovering this opera and decided to find some free time to watch again all three collaborative works between Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Lorenzo da Ponte, back to back. Not sure if I will have time until my own little Wolfie arrives, but at least that gives him the occasion to hear Mozart while he is in the womb, and apparently it's good for him and his intellectual development. Anyway, so I thought I would share a duet from Cosi fan tutte, the duet Il core vi dono, sung between Guglielmo (Luca Pisaroni) and Dorabella (Anke Vondung). As I mentioned in my previous post on the subject, if I had studied opera enough to become a professional opera singer, Guglielmo would have been my role, as I am a baritone. Fittingly enough, Guglielmo is also Guillaume in Italian. It's is absolutely sublime as a duet and like the whole opera a complete deconstruction of what a love duet should be. In fact, it is far more about infatuation than love and as you can read in the subtitles, the lyrics are surprisingly raunchy. But it is beautiful all the same and the rendition here is amazing.

Celebrating H.P. Lovecraft

This year, I did not forget it: today is H.P. Lovecraft's birthday. The master of cosmic horror and the writer responsible of some of the scariest reading experiences I've had. I discovered him mainly through the role-playing game Call of Cthulhu, inspired from his work. As we are getting closer and closer to Halloween, I suggest you read some of his short stories today to get yourself in the mood for the season and also to celebrate one of the greatest and most influential contributors to modern horror. And I put here the Great Old One, Chtulhu himself, to commemorate his creator's birthday. Even after being parodied and becoming a pop culture reference, his original self is still terrifying.

Bouquiner localement

Poached Eggs From The Forest

I had this a few weeks ago, in a local café that is truly a restaurant. It is something that you can have at breakfast or lunch, so it is a brunch. I ordered it out of curiosity, because of its rather intriguing name: Poached Eggs From The Forest. Eggs? From the forest? I wondered how they could be from the forest (they are plain chicken eggs after all), but hey, I love poached eggs and it seemed original enough. Apart from eggs (poached and apparently from the forest), it has spinach, mushrooms, feta and other stuff on a poppy and rye sourdough. I guess what makes it woodland like are the colours, the brown of the bread and mushrooms mixing with the green of the spinach. Oh and it also has black truffle oil. I am generally not a fan of mushrooms, but this time and to my great surprise, I loved the dish, including the mushrooms. And strangely enough, it tasted like eggs from the forest should taste.

My bookworm's life in one image

This is one of the many Internet memes that I stumbled on on Facebook. Of all the statement a meme can make, I often think the ones that try to be deep and clever are most likely stupid clichés, or at least banal statements. It is those that don't try to be clever, that just try to be funny (and succeed to be) which end up revealing something about human nature. Some human nature anyway. This one explains why more than a month after we moved in, the place is still not as tidy as it should be. But hey, it's amazing how many great books I have and so much fun rediscovering them.

The local bookshop is open

I blogged back in June about an upcoming bookshop in our little town. We already have some, but mainly second hand bookshops (Oxfam and the likes) and one W.H. Smith which is like most (all?) W.H. Smiths a glorified stationary shop. Now this new one is independent, or a franchise of such a small chain you can practically say it is independent... And it is open now! Since Monday actually. I did not expect until a bit later in the year, so it is a nice surprise. I could not visit it yet, obviously I arrive home outside opening hours on weekdays, but I intend to make a first visit, spend an hour or twelve there and make a few purchases (because this is how I spend money). A lot of exciting things are happening these days. I will of course keep you posted about it.

Dinogoose?

This is an Egyptian goose. I took the picture, which is not great, by the Thames River. I had no idea what it was at the time, hence the picture. I thought it was a very strange goose in comparison to the other, more normal specimens of the species that we see on the Thames. Egyptian geese look very much like velociraptors, or some kind of predatory dinosaurs anyway. And according to the raptors' description in Wikipedia, they are about the same size and also have features, so they share more than one traits with them. I blogged last year about the opinion of my niece on geese, that they look nasty and creepy. I am starting to see her point. This goose truly is a dinogoose, at least in look.

Leaves announcing autumn?

I blogged less than a week ago about the first signs of autumn. These were almost imperceptible. I have witnessed since then more obvious signs in the trees of the neighbourhood. This picture was taken shortly after my post of last week. Among the abundance of green, this yellow patch of leaves. I know what some of you will say (my brother PJ  probably): that this might only be caused by dryness. But it has not been so dry, for one (we live in England after all). And this is distinctly yellow, not brownish. Furthermore, we have seen more trees changing colours, my wife can witness it. I keep thinking that this is a sign of an autumn that will be early and, well, very autumnal. Same thing happened last year: we saw some trees changing colours early, and sure enough, we had an early and cool autumn.

Ancient shark in cold water

Sometimes the creatures of the deep just fascinate me. And I recently read something fascinating about one of them: scientists may have found a Greenland shark that is about 400 years old. That would make her a very elderly lady (as the shark is a female), but also the oldest vertebrate on Earth (if the calculations are correct, as the claim is challenged). Or well, the oldest vertebrate in Earth's oceans. But let's say for blogging's sake that this is true. She has survived wars, fishing, pollution, what have you. When nature can be so strong, you can't help feeling respect. I wonder what the Greenland shark thinks, if she is conscious of her age, of our presence as primates, land dwellers, when we go near or in her natural habitate, and what she thinks of our specie. Ok, so I am anthropomorphizing the old lady shamelessly, but one can wonder.

Domino outside

Well, it was bound to happen and in a way I am glad it did happen. I told you before that since Domino got hit by a car, we did not allow him to go out, fearful that it would happen again or that he may get in the way of other dangers. Since we moved into our new home,he tried a few time to sneak out of the house. He got successful a few times, but I usually took him back in immediately. A week ago, when my wife and I were enjoying the sun and reading in the front garden, we could not resist his emotional blackmail, as he was meowing painfully every time we were near the door. We were feeling very guilty, so we left him out, under strict supervision. He remained outside almost an hour, mostly exploring our front garden and our neighbours', smelling every plant and sometimes just sitting in the shade. Everything went well for our feline friend, except for one thing. Our neighbours' back cat Amy, who is chubbier than Domino and has set up the gardens as her own territory (as she can go outside as she please) , did not appreciate his presence there. She came at him hissing and screeching furiously. Domino remained under the bush, sitting there, apparently paralyzed. Thankfully, her owner, a gentle old lady, came to take Amy in time. After that, and since Amy was still screeching angrily from afar, I took our reluctant cat back in. Better be safe than sorry. Since then Amy does not like us anymore and Domino keeps wanting to go out. But at least he enjoyed an hour of relative liberty and the outside world.

The "back to school" feeling in one image

I found this image in one of the many Facebook fan pages of the Peanuts comics, with Marcie shopping for school. I do not know the rest of the strip where it is from, all the same it fascinates me, because it illustrates this time of year perfectly. August is the month of blues, when the school holidays are ending and we have already to prepare for the return to classes. So that means go and shop for stationary. It means putting your mind on school things while you are still on holidays. In a word, it gives you the "back to school" feeling, aka the blues of August. I hated it then and even as a grownup who does not go to school, I hate it now. Because it is still stuck in my psyche.

Cate Blanchett dancing and singing

There was tonight on British TV a program about the best songs of the 80s. A decade I don't like much. Apparently, the third best song was Total Eclipse of the Heart by Bonnie Tyler. Which I have a soft spot for, as it was sung by... Cate Blanchett, in the movie Bandits. She also sings and dances on Holding Out for a Hero in the same scene. The film is not the greatest one of my favourite actress, but it's good, solid entertainment and Cate Blanchett just heightens and enhances every scene she is in it. She does the same with these two songs, showing her character's frustration in her mundane life culminating in her emotional breakdown. A true great actor, or in this case a great actress, remains great in lesser works. And that is why I think Cate Blanchett is the greatest living actress.

Tea and Milk again (argh!)

I blogged recently about the cup of tea I received in an antenatal class that had been spoiled with milk. Well, it seems that history repeats itself and in a very short time period and in pretty much the same circumstances. My wife and I went this morning to another antenatal class, this time at the hospital. After the class, we went to one of the hospital's cafés for a quick nibble and a drink. I am not sure if it was a Costa Coffee but they were serving their hot drinks in a Costa cup. I ordered a cup of tea... and this is what I received. For the record, I never, ever asked for milk in it. It was absolutely vile. You can see everything wrong in a cuppa. And to make matters worse it was PG Tips. Honestly, how can anyone drink that? We had too little time for me to ask for a new cup without milk and I needed a caffeine intake, so I drank from this chalice. Some of its content anyway, I could not swallow all that mud so there was half of it left when we got home, by the time warm and thus all the more disgusting. I threw the rest in the sink.

Advices about fatherhood, from the Ticklers

On my way back to work, I stopped at the Ticklers' place (even though they are not sisters, they are inseparable), because my wife was there in a visit and apparently the girls were missing me. They are on holiday and had spent the afternoon chatting to my wife about what we should and especially what I should do when the little cub wolf we are going to have is here (it could be any time now). They gave me a few rules that they said I really need to get by if I want to be a good father and raise Wolfie properly. I suggested they write down the list, which they said they would do. But until then, I thought I would share them here with you:

-Apparently, I should not swear, ever. Not in French, not in English, so Wolfie does not learn rude words.
-I should not drink anymore either, so as not to give him a bad example and also to avoid any dangerous situation.
-I should not tell him scary stories. But for the Ticklers, I can still tell them scary stories. Only, I should not tell them to my son as not to scare him, not until he reaches a certain age. (Oh, and they find Lufsig "the most horrible plush toy you could ever find" as "he eats people").
-I have to make sure my socks are not worn out. I cannot remember the word they used, but apparently, it is necessary that I set good examples regarding the socks I wear and their tending.

Failure to break these rules and a few others means that I will get slapped on the wrist by them and maybe pull a few hairs out if I really misbehave. Otherwise, they agreed my wife and I will make great parents and they said: "We think Wolfie is gonna be epic." They love the word epic. I wonder what an epic son is supposed to be like, but I think this deserves to be a new great unknown line.

Guarding scarecrows

If you read Vraie Fiction in the last few months, you might have noticed that I often blogged about scarecrows. We bought a few for our new garden and I finally put them there. From left to right there's Rosie, there's Rusty and there's the other two that are not named yet (so suggestions are welcomed). I am not very original: they are sold everywhere. Scarecrows, like garden gnomes, are meant to guard plants and crops against birds. Well, these ones are not guarding anything right now: there's nothing but grass in that garden. All the same, they are cute and at least they make for nice decorations, until we have something to plant in the garden. Again, suggestions are welcomed.

Sinistres cygnes

The cats are back at David's Tea

I took this picture on the Facebook page of David's Tea. Remember the mugs and accessories they had with cat images? I was tempted to buy some during my last time in Montreal... and I did before I left. Well, they have new ones, as you can see on the picture. New mugs with cats, who this time are far more active, jumping and all (playing cats, apparently), and red (hibiscus) cat infusers.  All this to accompany their new blends of energizing teas. Because, you know, it will soon be time to get back to school and all and that means you need energizing beverage that tastes nice (read: not coffee) and to cheer yourself up with some nice accessories to go with them. Oh and they also have new travel mugs with cats! How I wished we had David's Tea when I was an undergraduate student in Montreal! Now I have plenty of mugs and other stuff from them, so there is no need to buy more. Although we do have plenty of room in the cupboards...

Question existentielle (289)

First sign of autumn?

Maybe it is wishful thinking from my part, but I think we have started seeing, or more precisely feeling, the first sign of autumn to come. It is so far very discreet, yet he temperature gets cooler. This is especially true when evening comes, although it is not exclusive to evenings: sunny days quickly becomes overcast and there is a recurrent breeze that gives you a slight shiver. Often in the afternoon, I am surprised to feel how cool it is. I am very sensitive to the signs of autumn as it is the season I love the most. I know I may be wrong, but I do have a good instinct for seasonal changes. And the breeze is a constant. There is no distinct change of colours in the trees like last year... yet. But there is the cool breeze and the temperature dropping. I think the season might come early like it did last year.

Of socks and gremlins

Do you have the same problem I face after doing a laundry basket? After you have everything washed and dried, you find out that you have socks, but some are no longer pairs of socks: some socks lost their brother in the laundry. Laundry after laundry, and you end up with lots and lots of socks... but fewer and fewer pairs. Well, I was relieved to know that I was not alone, as one of my friends complained about the same thing on Facebook. He also gave a very plausible explanations for these disappearances: gremlins. Or, as he explains it: "Washing machine gremlins must exist, I've never seen one but they are living among us. What other explanation can there be for all of the pillow cases ending up at the bottom of one duvet cover, or socks going into a wash cycle, never to return?" Makes sense doesn't it? And I suspect there are many houses with gremlins infestations. Kind of scary and reassuring at the same time. Now I know where all the lost socks go: they are snatched.

The new commute

As you know, I have been in our new home for about a month now. And a new home meansa new commute to work as well. I say new commute, and not that much has changed. We still live in the same town. I still take the train, from the same train station and it takes pretty much the same time. According to Google Map on my phone, 16 minutes exactly with the shortest road, instead of 15. Nevertheless, it is a different commute. We live in a different part of the town, for one. And not as fancy neighbourhood as well. Such is the price to pay to be owners. So the streets I take to go to the station are not as picturesque. I don't have to walk near the town centre, so they are far quieter as well. That said, I have to see far more greenery, which is always nice. The first part of my walk to the station every morning is via the pathway which picture you see on the right. Not the most charming path, but a nice one all the same. At least it's green. Then after walking long a street, crossing another I walk through the business park. At least it looks nice, as far as business park goes. Then I am at the station and everything is well in the world. I do miss being able to stop in shops on the way back, but this way I don't get delayed and I go straight home after work.

Time outside

I am not much into summertime, not since I no longer work or study in school. I find it too hot when it is hot and the idea of summer holidays is pretty much meaningless now. Not that they have much summer holidays in this country anyway. But today, I actually enjoyed the hot weather, somewhat. My wife bought this week at Mountain Warehouse (of all places) folding garden chairs (okay so they are camping chairs, but never mind that). They were quite cheap and are actually pretty cool looking. So I did something I love to do when weathers allowed, but had not done in a long while: I read outside. In the front garden. Our front garden. It feels good saying it. It was great spending time outside this way. And at last, I had the proper tool to do it for long: these chairs are really comfy, easy to set up and they even have a cup holder so you can even have a drink. I loved Mountain Warehouse already, for some obscure reason as I am not exactly an outdoor sports kind of guy. Now I loved it and I intend to wear out the camping chairs as much as I can.
