February Ending

So if anyone noticed, we are the last day of February. I say if anyone noticed, because this year, it's been more difficult to be aware of time passing. This February would have been otherwise a very banal, uneventful February: it's not a leap year, for one, it has only 28 days. Now, it is a February during the plague, the pandemic, it is a February like we never really had them. That said, mine has been pretty good, all things considered. I generally don't like this month (for more details, see this post from 2017), the only virtue I give it is that it's short, but this time it has been all right: not too cold, not too wet, not too depressing, not too... Februarish? Anyway, that was mine, how was yours?

The daffodils of the Wallingford Bookshop

I found this picture on the Facebook page of the Wallingford Bookshop, maybe my favourite independent bookshop in England. They placed paper daffodils and floral paintings at the window that almost look like the real ones. Springtime is already here for them, at least in their bookshop window. I cannot wait to go back there again. Of all the shop windows, the ones I prefer are local bookshop windows, whatever the season.

"The Ultimate Hunt"

What you see here is the cover for the recent Italian edition of The Last Hunt by South African crime writer Deon Meyer. One of my favourite crime writers and one of my favourite novels of his, for many reasons, which you can read here. Now I wanted to make to observation about this cover: 1)it looks like an Italian fumetto (comic book), and by the way it would be great to have graphic novel adaptations of Meyer's books. 2)The title, L'Ultima caccia, sounds very dramatic, far more infact than the English or the French title of the same novel. Not merely the last hunt, but the ultimate one. Is it me or do Italian titles often sound more dramatic? Something to do with the Italian people perhaps. In any case, it is a pretty cool book cover.

Je me trompe?

Backgammon

Recently, I learned that a friend of mine taught her nine year old daughter to play backgammon. I thought that was very fancy, and it reminded me that I once play backgammon myself, decades and decades ago, probably when I was around my friend's daughther's age. It was only for a few games against a friend of mine who had a set. I remember nothing of the rules and strategy, in fact I don't think I ever understood it at all. My friend was very competitive and he made us discover new board game only to beat us to it, my brother and I. I have always loved board games, even though I rarely play them anymore. I don't know if backgammon would ever be one I'd even like to play, as I prefer games that have elements of role play, beside I think I'd still be rubbish at it, but I'd love to own a set just because it has a certain sleek elegance.

A toddler's Clockwork Orange

Today is the birthday of Anthony Burgess, author of A Clockwork Orange. To celebrate the birthday of my favourite author and the 50th anniversary of the release of the movie adaptation, I thought I would share something funny. No, this series of books (there are more covers to find, which I might uploadone day) does not exist, but I wished it did. I'd genuinely be happy to buy them. I think it would be a hit.

How do you organise your bookshelves?

This post is sort of a followup to my post from yesterday. Anyway, I read recently a post from Penguins Publishing titled How do you organise your bookshelves?. My answer, which I gave on social media and I am giving here, is simple: "as little as possible". It is sort of true, and a new great unknown line, but I oversimplified to make a good punchline. The truth is, there is some order in my madness, which I detailed in this post: by genre, by author, by height and in order of how much I like them. And you, how do you organise yours?

To read until the feeling passes...

I found this meme online recently and thought it was very funny. It is also very true of me, although I do not read nearly as much as I should. But every time I think it is time to clean and tidy, I decide that it is time to read or reread a book. And as my wife would say, the books are often part of the mess, just like in this image.

A paratrooper?

During one of our walks outside, we saw this on the ground near our house. We think this is one of the toys of the littleboy living nearby, who is a few months older than Wolfie. My wife and I think it is one of these toys paratroopers, but without his parachute. My brothers and I used to have them as a kid and I loved them. Obviously, we will not bring this one home, in fact I might knock at the little boy's family's door and tell them if it is his lost toy. But it got me thinking that I'd love to have a few of these to play with Wolfie and I might ask my wife to buy me a set of paratroopers for my birhtday.

"Bonbon clair"

The return of the family's trains

My father promised it to me and it finally happened: like last year, he finally set up the family's LGB trains (one diesel, one with a steam engine) and the railway network in the basement. He was also very happy to show it to his grandson and Wolfie and I had lots of fun watchingthe network running via Facetime. I hope my dad keeps them there for a long time, because it is more fun watching these trains than watching a movie, I kid you not. And it is even more enjoyable with an enthusiastic little boy, the third generation of my family to love model trains.

The ideal library

My wife got an online copy of Country Life, so can Wolfie could have a look at the tractors. There was this picture of the South Library of the Athenaeum, which I share here. My wife said: "I just found the ideal for you." She knows me well and this deserves to be a new great unknown line. I'd love to spend a few afternoons there reading, although the beauty of the place might feel overwhelming.

Tramway journeys

I took this picture during our visit to the Crich Tramway Village in Derbyshire back in 2019. It was our last English holiday and one of my favourite discoveries in Derby. Journeying in a tramway is not as excitingas in a vintage train (that is the top), but it was a great fun and it felt like being in another time. I cannot wait to do it again.

What a good book can do

I am sharing again a meme by Books Are My Bag, to remind everyone in lockdown to try read more (I know I am struggling at times here, not sure why) and to choose local bokshops whenever possible. It's also a great image.

The Winking Cat

I took this picture when I was chatting with my cousin and comparing our mugs (yes, we did that through Messenger, what can I say, in lockdown you sometimes have nothing better to do or to show). I am actually quite fond of this mug. Not only because it has a cool cat on it (two in fact, there's one on the other side) but because... well, okay, it's just because there's a cool cat on it. It was a second hand gift from my wife's cousin. We went to stay at her place one weekend, she offered me tea in it and since she saw that I liked the mug a lot, she just gave it to me. It comes from Cats Protection, apparently. Now I mostly drink milk in it. Kind of fitting.

P'tit Loup, l'alter ego

What your wine choice says about you

I was wasting some time online when I saw this on one of the pages I have been following. I thouhgt this was quite funny and, in my case, pretty accurate. In case you are wondering, I generally go for red and I am partial to Chianti (mostly because of the cool looking bottle with the basket though, and because it's generally cheap and I'm a philistine), when there is any available. I say this and I don't drink wine very often, if at all. Now less than ever. But I do miss it. Be that as it may, this meme gave me a good laugh and I wonder what your wine choice says about you. Write it down in the comments section and of course tell me if you agree with it or not.

Coquille St-Jacques

Wolfie and maple syrup

Today is is Shrove Tuesday and to celebrate on this blog I wanted to share an anecdote about it from last year. I shared it in a French post before, so if you think it sounds familiar, I am sorry. Anyway, as it is traditional, we made pancakes for Shrove Tuesday, something we will doagain this year. We usually have all sorts of things to pour on it: sugar, chocolate sauce and maple syrup, things like that As my wife is an Englishwoman, she wanted to serve Wolfie with the traditional English topping, which is sugar and lemon juice. Wolfie did not care one bit about it. When I made him taste maple syrup, however, he really enjoyed it and asked for more. I always thought sugar and lemon juice is very bland on a pancake, I am so happy that my son thinks the same and that like every good Quebecker, he knows that the proper way of eating a pancake is with maple syrup.

Usborne's See Inside Trains Book

When he was born, I thought that getting Wolfie interested about books may be hard. It turned out to be not the case, as long as it is about things that interest him to begin with. And there is one right now he really likes. As for his book of tractors, it is published by Usborne and is titled See Inside Trains. With flaps to lift so you can, well... see inside trains. And see how they work and what goes on in them. I must say, I think I love it just as much as he does. Just like a lot of things Wolfie enjoys. In any case, this is the book we read before bedtime.

Say it with Mozart

Happy Valentine's Day everyone. To celebrate on this blog, I decided toshare an aria from Le Nozze di Figaro by Mozart, because you can't go wrong with Mozart. It shows a more painful aspect of love, but we can't shy away from this aspect of it either. For many people, single or not, Valentine's Day sucks, or is at least stressful. And this year, I did not go for a cynical aria. Here it is sung by German soprano Annette Dasch and she sure sells it.

The Green Men of Derbyshire

I blogged a few times before about the Crich Tramway Village in Derbyshire, one of the best thing we discovered during our last English holiday (it feels like ages now). In a piece of woodland next to the village itself, there is a little promenade where there's many sculptures of creatures of folklore and legends, including many, many trees with faces. I think they were meant to represent Green Men. It must certainly be the case of this one,who looks like a typical Green Man. He alsolooks alive and I was half expecting him to start talking. I really loved walking there, it was like becoming a character of old myths and legends.

Roasted Nuts, the socks

I love when you can kill two birds at the same time and enjoy both beer and clothes shopping. Although I hate clothes shopping usually, mind you. But I am a fan of Roasted Nuts from Rebellion Beer. And they now sell socks with the colours and squirrel of the beer label. So I can now buy beer AND socks, at the same time. And I always need more good socks. So I am now the happy owner of a pair of Roasted Nuts socks.

"Out of numbers"

Wolfie did a new Wolfism recently. It was done while holding my fingers so I could not count down from five to bath time. I do this sometimes, I guess like many parents: I count down from five or to five, then my son must get seated for dinner, take his bath, go to bed. So I was doing this, counting with my fingers, when he took hold of them and said: "Now you've run out of numbers!" Moral of the story: it's difficult to be strict when he is so adorable.

Dr Quack's Elixir

Like many pictures I shared here in the last few days, I took this one at Sundown Adventureland. As usual I am sharing it today just because. It was of course in the western section. You know that in the Old/Far West there used to be quack doctors selling dodgy elixirs that cured everything. They were a common trope in western and parodies. These phoney doctors were of course more charlatans salesmen than doctors. This one at least had the honesty to call himself Dr Quack. I thought it was quite funny when I saw it. In a way, it is quite a topical photo: I am sure they have modern Dr Quacks during the pandemic making a lot of money out of gullible people.

"Notre" LGB

A Thrilling Spy Cover

I blogged about Call for the Dead by John Le Carré before, here and here. One of te objectives I have this year is to read more of his work, as he is a master of spy fiction, a genre I want to properly discover. But I digress. What I wanted to blog about today is how brilliant this particular cover of the novella. Everyhting there is perfect: the cold monochrome colours, rather calming but giving an icy feel, the two men in the background, one crouching slightly as in speaking in a conspirational tone, the man reading the newspaper on the foreground. There is a sober ominous tone to the whole picture. I love it, because it shows that you don't need high spectacles, guns and a sexy vamp to create a thrilling cover.

Wolfie wants a belt

For Christmas, the mother of Blonde Tickler bought our son a few pieces of clothes, including his first ever pair of jeans. Wolfie loves the jeans and he wears them as often as possible. The only problem is that he is still a bit small for them. They tend to go down when he wears them. His mum suggested that he gets a belt. Wolfie got enthusiastic about it and he decided that he wants a black belt, "just like daddy's". Because the belt I always wear for my own jeans is black. I found it quite sweet. So anyway, we now have to find a black belt for a young boy.

Heracles against the Hydra

This picture was taken from Gods, Men and Monsters from the Greek Myths, one of the many books my brothers and I had about Greek mythology when we were kids. It represents Heracles (you recognise him easily because of the lion's hide he wears) fighting the Hydra of Lerna. I wanted to share it here, just because it is a darn good image, both very detailed and dramatic. One last note about the Greek hero: I always call him by his Greek name Heracles and not Hercules, which is the Roman equivalent. Mainly because I prefer to be as accurate as possible giving names (even though I call Ulysses by his Roman name and not Odysseus), but also because the original hero is far cooler than the watered down versions Hollywood has given us.

A knitted whale

It's not only my mother who does knitting for her grandsons. So does my wife's mum. And she is very talented too. She recently knitted this whale for Wolfie. Why a whale? Because for some reason, Wolfie asked for a whale. As for my son's own motivations to ask for a whale, I really don't know. But it is a very sweet thing to do and a lovely whale which will join his other plush toys.

Bigfoot Rescue Kit

A few days ago, it was the birthday of Blonde Tickler, who turned 15. Sadly she is getting older, sadly we could not celebrate with her. But this reminded me of one present I bough her once, I can't remember if it was for her birthday or just for fun. I bought it in Montreal, in Farfelu if my memory is correct. When I saw it, I knew I had to buy it for her. It is the Bigfoot Rescue Kit, and basically includes a plush toy (her, I mean a bigfoot) and a booklet that is a caregiver guide with adoption certificate. I don't remember what name she gave her bigfoot, but I know she was very happy wiht er present. I did a bit of research and I see that they are availablehere in the UK. I might buy one for Wolfie one day. Because cryptids are cute and bigfoots are so darn cute.

What's Your Bookstore Name?

Here is a bit of a silly picture I found on Books Are My Bag. I think it is quite fun, if nothing else. Apparently and considering crime fiction is a mystery (it may not be) my bookstore name would be "Armchairs & Mysteries". Not great, but not bad. What would be yours?

Time for spy thrillers?

I don't know why, but I have been a very slow reader since the beginning of the year. It's not like me. I also don't know what to read. Then I thought yesterday that maye I should in the coming weeks dedicate my reading time to a genre. Most of the year, it is crime fiction, from August and during autumn it is horror of course and then crime fiction again. This month and the next could be spy fiction. I don't have much of it, but during my last trip to the secondhand bookshop I bought this book from Len Deighton just because I liked the cover (yes I can be shallow like that) and the title. I never read Deighton, now would be a good excuse to start. But the main reason is that reading a specific genre might help me focus on the activity. Some people want to binge watch, I'd rather binge read. Anyway, spy fiction is also a fitting genre to read in the dreary looking weeks that you usually have in February and March.

Say it with... trolls?

Valentine's Day is coming very soon. I don't like Valentine's Day much: too stressful when you are in a relationsip, too depressing when you are not. And in times of pandemic, it makes things a bit more complicated. If I lived in Montreal (where there is at least one shop that sells them), I knew what I'd like for Valentine's Day: this troll which I found on the Facebook page of the Arensbak Trolls. you gotta admit, he's really cute.

Avertissement

Blast from the working past

This morning, a former colleague of mine, from the employer I hated, texted me on LinkedIn, asking me about the password to access a platform we used sometimes. As I always got along well with him, he was not asking for much and I wanted to be on good terms (you never know), I got back to him and gave him what he wanted. But next time, if there is a next time, I think I might just ignore any call for assistance. I no longer work for them, I don't need to waste my time on such queries and I have no obligation, legal, moral or otherwise. Still, it felt strange to hear from him and it just struck me that I really don't miss the old office. It also struck me that this call for assistance was symptomatic of the office politics there: disorganised, unable to solve things by themselves or take initiatives, delegating whenever there was any problem or whenever they could not be bothered to do something tedious. Can't find a password? Don't ask IT, ask the guy who set it up in the first place! If I ever find my current job or indeed any future job difficult, I just need to remember the years spent in that madhouse.

Army Helicopters Sighting

Yesterday afternoon, just before finishing work, when it was still fairly light outside, I witnessed a very impressive sight: two huge army helicopters flying. I don't know for sure which kind of helicopters they were, I know zilch about army equipment and vehicles, but it was those huge machines with two rotors on top, maybe Boeing Chinooks. In any case, even though I'm not a militarist I was in awe just for the cheer size of these flying things, and Wolfie even more so. I wonder where they were heading to/from. Sandhurst perhaps? We don't line that far, but we seldom see army helicopters, and I have never massive ones like them. Anyway, it made my day.

This Schleich farmer needs a name

You might remember that I once blogged about Basil and his tractor, a Schleich action figure given to Wolfie by my grandfather. Well, he has another Schleich, like Basil he is a farmer, but this one comes with a conveyor belt. As he is in a standing position, we can play a little bit more with him than his fellow farmer, although personally I find the conveyor belt less exciting than a tractor. Be that as it may, Wolfie likes him all right, but the farmer has yet to be given a name. So this is my new project: find him a name. I thought I would ask my readers on this blog. What name would you give this fellow?  I will take any suggestion you may have and will give them all to Wolfie, who will of course have final say over the result. I will tell you in a future post which name has been chosen.
