Ending May

We are the last day in May and a bank holiday on top of that. The last one until August. Luckily enough, the weather has been spendid recently, summer is pretty much here, after the cool, sometimes downright cold springtime. I would usually complain, but it is very bearable, in the lower twenties. In fact, I quite enjoy it and if it can remain like this and not go higher until late August, I would be happy. And you, how was May on your side of the world?

Visiting hedgehogs

A few nights ago, as I was waiting for Domino to get home, I heard a sound coming from our front garden (which I haven't mowed for a while.) A very distinctive, kind of gnawing sound. I looked where it came from and as I expected, I saw two hedgehogs. I managed to take a pretty good picture. I kind of like hedgehogs, they are quite cute and they are part of what makes the British wildlife so typically British. Anyway, it made my evening and just because of their visit I'm glad I haven't mowed the lawn. They must have found it welcoming like it is.

"Eskimoed"

Wolfie gave me a new Wolfism recently and it is so good I had to share it here. So a few days ago he came to me and said: "Daddy, daddy, Domino was very nice, he Eskimoed me." Which means that our cat rubbed his nose against him. He gave him an Eskimo kiss, in other words. And I now the term Eskimo is derogatory now, but I did not know of any other term when I explained to him what is an Eskimo kiss and of course it was not used by Wolfie or me in an offensive way. (I thought it was safer to give this disclaimer now.) Anyway, I thought it was quite cute, so I wanted to share it here.

Truites

Scouser thug and Stilton cheese

Here is something that can happen only in Liverpool, but it is so bizarre that I first found out about it reading Montreal online newsparers: a drug dealer was arrested by the police because of a photo of a piece of Stilton cheese he took and posted on social media. Usually, I'd think that sort of news would make for a great crime fiction story. But it's just too weird. That said, I lived about a year in Liverpool and it does not surprise me in the slightest.

Blogger is behaving badly again

Okay, I am getting really frustrated with this. Last week it was a blog post I lost (and it took me everything to get it back), now I receive an error message every time I try to upload a picture on a post.  Whatever the picture, whatever the browser. I am sick and tired of this. If it becomes permanent, I will switch to Wordpress or something. It can't be any worse than this rubbish.

Smoothie time!

For her last birthday, I bought to my wife a smoothie maker.Because she asked for one as she thought it would be a great way to improve our intake of fruits. She seldom makes them as it is a pain to wash the whole thing afterwards, but sometimes she gets in the mood for some, or Wolfie asks for smoothies out of the blue. This is what happened a couple of days ago, when Wolfie insisted that he wanted smoothies. So my wife blended frozen fruits with yogurt (a good deal of yogurt, as you can see). The result was a tad puree and not very sweet, but I enjoyed it all the same. It gave me a nice energy boost at work. I kind of hope it becomes a family tradition, especially on working days.

An helicopter in the evening

Two days ago in the evening, I heard the rather loud noise of rotors, well, rotating. When I lifted my eyes, I saw a huge helicopter, the same kind I had seen back in February. Maybe a Boeing Chinooks, but I am no expert so can't be certain. It was probably flying from or to Sandhurst. I tried my best to take a few snapshots. This is the best picture I managed to take of the machine. It looked far more impressive live.

London and James Bond

They shared this image a few days ago on the official Facebook page of Ian Fleming, with a quote from Live and Let Die. I am sharing it because I love the quote, with his feeling of danger and looming menace. It also mentions London, a place we generally see only briefly in James Bond novels and movies. London is the starting point of his adventures, rarely the setting. So anyway, that's why I wanted to share it today.

Of secret paths and new friends

Yesterday, we had our second meeting in the park with parents of the children of Wolfie's age who will be starting to go to the same school this coming September. We arrived a bit late and Wolfie was shy at first, so we didn't speak with many people. But Wolfie still managed to make a new friend, a boisterous boy who showed him all the narrow paths in the shrubbery of the park. Let's call him Jim. So they spent a lot of time running and crawling in these secret paths like little conspirators and telling each other stories about their life: Wolfie loves all engines, but he does not like ghosts, Jim told him "but monsters are the scariest", Wolfie said "daddy had his birthdayand he got a tank with soldiers", and so on. It was very sweet. I'm glad he had fun and made a new friend for next year.

Via Rail, Chicoutimi, 1988

Caramel Mocha (home delivery)

I hate coffee, as those of you who have been following this blog for a while know. My wife, however, really loves coffee, more than an average Brit. Especially things like mocha. So yesterday, she saw on social media that a local barista was selling his products for home delivery (!) for £3.50 a cup. She was hesitant, but I told her that it would be nice to encourage local businesses in these uncertain times, that it would make this mocha extra special and that anyway, I had some spare change and it would be my treat. So here it is. The proper term, if I am not mistaken, is caramel mocha latte. In any case, it looks very fancy, cost only £3.50 and it was delivered.

Wuthering Days

I mentioned recently that it has not been so far a very warm month overall. It has been cool, often rainy and even more often, very windy. It says they are forecasting moderate breeze, but it does not feel moderate where we are. Sometimes I wonder how some trees are still standing. I'm not complaining: I love wuthering days. But I wonder whether I should go out today or just enjoy the weekend at home. I wanted to run some errands, but that kind of weather is more pleasant when one stays inside. That said, I am really, really enjoying the weather.

International Tea Day

I learned at complete random today, browsing through social media, that we were International Tea Day. Apparently it's a real thing. According to Wikipedia, the day "aims to raise awareness of the long history and the deep cultural and economic significance of tea around the world." Said like this, it makes perfect sense and I have to say, tea has become quite important in my own life, especially since I don't drink coffee, so I need to find my caffein through other means. It just tastes really nice and it is both soothing and energizing. Anyway, a late happy International Tea Day everyone and tell me what's your cup of tea in the comments.

Orwell for £1.00

There is one fundamental truth about English literature: you never read enough George Orwell. There is another fundamental truth about English literature: not enough people read Orwell. There is yet another fundamental truth about English literature, a corollary of the first two: too many idiots refer to Orwell even though they haven't read a single one of his books and only know the title of one. In other words, "Orwellian" has become a buzzword uneducated pedants and political wannabe Nostradamuses, generally right wing ones. So anyway, I bought this book at £1.00, because that's a great read at bargain price.

Cidre californien (?)

Red kite flying

As you may know if you have been reading this blog for a while, we have a community of birds of prey in our little English town: red kites. My wife saw one yesterday and she managed to take a few pictures, including this one. As it is a really good pic, I'm sharing it here.

Say it with a bear

I have been learning the ropes of my new job, which so far has been quite daunting and exhausting. New company, new products, new methods, new schedule, it is a lot to take in. And I did not have time to say proper goodbyes to my former colleagues. That said, I received almost right after my last day this farewell card from them, which I found both funny and encouraging. I don't know who had the idea of a card with a bear (albeit I suspect it was my French colleague), but I find it very fitting all the same, not certain why. It made me smile, anyway.

Early autumn already?

Half of May is already over, but it does not look like it outside: for the last month or so, it has been cool, often even cold, I have been wearing my warm clothes almost non stop. If the trees were not all green, you would think that this not spring, but autumn. And to be very honest, I don't mind one bit, since autumn is my favourite season. I guess for many this month of May is far from ideal, but I kind of hope (without expecting it, as of course it will change) that it remain like this for the weeks and months to come. If September is going to be like this, I will be a very happy man.

Keeping secrets from children?

Like I mentioned yesterday, we went for a walk with a family of friends. The parents have two children, a boy and a girl, both older than Wolfie. And theytold us recently of a question their son asked them: "Do you keep secrets from us?" The mother reply: "We don't keep secrets, however we don't not tell you what you don't need to know." That was a good answer and a funny one and they asked me to add it to the blog (I didn't know they still read it) as a new great unknown line. I am very happy to oblige.

I need Wellies

Today, we went for a walk with some friends. It had rained a bit, but thought nothing of it. It was a big mistake. I wore my shoes, see, and we went to some very muddy paths, so soon I had my shoes covered in mud and my jeans as well. Our friends were wiser: they all had boots. I looked ridiculous and ridiculously urbane. As my wife said it: "You know how to dress for cold weather, but after all these years in England you don't seem t be prepared for wet weather." She is right of course. So from this moment on I am on a mission: to buy Wellington boots or, as the Brits call it, Wellies. Of good quality of course, it will cost what it will cost, but I will have my Wellies. Which is the word of the day. It is not the first I make the mistake I made today, so I'll make sure it's going to be the last.

All About UFOs

I blogged before about All About Monsters and very often about All About Ghosts. There is a third book in the old classic Usborne books series about the paranormal: All About UFOs. My brothers and I did not have that one, for some reason. I think my mum thought it would have exposed us to too much pseudoscience if we had it. She would have been right: the Usborne's World of the Unkown series was not exactly good tool to develop skepticism and critical thinking. But my best friend had it, so I was exposed to it anyway. When I saw that it has recently been reedited, I had to purchase it. It is still as good, or as bad, as it originally was. Not exactly educational, but still gives me a few pleasant chills, the kind a science-fiction story would, when it has a few horror elements in it. I think it may be the weakest book of the three, but I might say this because I prefer horror to scifi. Now if they could only republish the third book, I'd be a very happy man...

I lost a post

I am not too happy about Blogger right now: my blog post of the 15th of October disappeared as I was adding a link to it. This will teach me to update old posts. Frustratingly enough, it was one of these posts I was quite proud of. And a Halloween post, to rub it in. I tried to recover it, so far without success. My brother PJ told me that this may be temporary, as Blogger seems to be having some issues at the moment. I hope this is the case, otherwise I will be very angry. Since they have decided to upgrade the interface last year, there seems to be always some issues.

Happy Birthday Queen Cate!

Here is something I celebrate on Vraie Fiction every year, or at least I try to: today is the birthday of Cate Blanchett, my favourite actress. Those who read this blog know that I discovered her with Elizabeth.I even remember hearing about her from the first time in a conversation I had at uni with a fellow undergraduate student: we were discussing the Oscars and she said Cate Blanchett should have won for best actress. I had heard her name before and was curious about the film, but she had not really caught my attention. Then I watched the movie and was blown away. I cannot remember when she became my favourite actress, or at least when I was conscious that she was. But it must have been around that time.

Bring a book, take a book

I found recently a new local "library", no bigger than a bird's house. It could have been a bird's house, or a postbox. It is very pink, a tad too much for my taste, but I find it a nice idea to promote reading. It may not be as ipressive as a phone booth, but we never have enough places to share books. I have plenty of books here, I might bring one or two there, if they can fit in. Not sure if I will take any for now though: I have already so many books to read here.

New Job

I have been keeping quiet about the work front these days, but today I have some annoucement to make: I will start a new job as of tomorrow. First it will be from home due to COVID, then at some point it will be hybrid: I will be working mostly from home, but will need to go to the office twice a month or so. The HQs are fairly far away, but since I don't have to go there often, it should be doable. Why am I changing job, you may ask? Because, while my current one is with a good company and one of the best employers I've had, it is a temporary position that would have ended in August. I was lucky enough to have my contract extended until August, as it was meant to end around January this year. That said, with no guarantee of further extension or permanence, I needed stability. So I got this one, which is in a smaller company, but considerably better paid. And permanent. Same time last year, I was officially employed but furloughed in a job I hated for employers I hated. When I got made redundant, I was a bit worried, but relieved. I feel that I have come a long way since then and that things have changed for the best.

The Jab

Quick post for some health news: I got my vaccine jab yesterday against COVID-19. More precisely, AstraZeneca, which kind of worried my wife, but so far so good, touch wood. I feel fine. Touch wood again. I wished I could have received another one, but hey, at least I am one step closer to be immuned against COVID. I was never terrified of the virus like some people have been, but I have always been conscious of the danger it represented. Receiving the jab, I feel like I am doing my part to put an end to the pandemic. I am participating to the war effort, so to speak. Anyway, this is one thing done, I even have the selfie to prove it. Because yes, I was silly enough to take a selfie when I received the jab.

Return to the local bookshop

Here is a bit of news of some importance, even though it is at fae value rather trivial: last Saturday, I went to the local bookshop. It as the first time since last November, before lockdown.. I behaved myself (mostly) and only bought three books, two of them were really cheap. And I even got another £5.00 voucher, which I used right away, so it did not cost me much. Even with masks and with the rather oppressive ambiace this pandemic brings every time you go out in the town centre, it felt good going back in the bookshop. It is the business that I had missed the most.

Volcano Mash

Sometimes, we want Wolfie to eat something else than pasta, which is his main diet. And it has proven to be quite hard. He used to like mashed potatoes in the past, so my wife had a great idea: turn the meal into a display. So she bought some Quorn Roarsone Vegan Dinosaur Nuggets (something Wolfie was quite curious about). I made a mash with it, then I created an image just like on the box: nugget for the dinosaur, brocoli and green peas for the prehistoric jungle and in the centre a potato mash in the shape (sort of) of a volcano, with lots of keptchup for lava. Wolfie really liked it. He ate  about half the nugget and most of the mash. I suspect it was because of the ketchup. And of course the next day, it did not work out so well: Wolfie didn't want that meal anymore.

Mister X

I blogged before about Scotland Yard, one ofmy favourite if not y favourite board game. When I was a child, it solidified my love of England and developedy love ofcrime fiction. In it, you play either a detective from, well Scotland Yard (aka the London Metropolitan Police, or the Met, but Scotland Yard sounds way cooler) orthe mysterious and elusive criminal Mister X. He is described as a criminal mastermind, but we don't know the nature of his crimes,or indeed his background. In the games' images, he's depicted as a man in a trenchcoat, wearing a hat and shades. Well, of course. I always quite liked this aspect of the character: we could imagine anything about him. Both the game and Mr. X made a strong impression on my imaginative mind as a child: my brothers and I invented a make belief game based on the board game (it often happened during my childhood) and Mr. X was one of the first villains we hunted down. I think I even invented some specific crimes for him to commit, some involved blackmail, some other industrial espionage, there might have been weapon trafficking and luxury goods too. Because he was at the start a blank slate, he developed into a memorable villain.

Meeting with future friends?

Today, right after we picked up Wolfie from preschool, we went to a meeting in the park with parents who have children the same age as our son, children who will go to the same school next year. I say "meeting", but it was not very formal and there were not many people: two mums my wife had met online in a Facebook group, and their two daughters, as well as a little toddler, the brother of one of them. We could only arrive late, so maybe there were more before. I wonder if the girls will become friend with Wolfie in the coming year, and if we will become friends with the parents we met today. Wolfie is not really into girly activities and interests, he's very much into stereotypically boys stuff (trucks and trains), but he does have his chivalrous moments. Last week, when a little girl at preschool was crying because she missed her mummy, he tried to cheer her up by bringing her lots of toy animals. It didn't work, she kept on crying, but he was really committed to make her happy. Anyway, I just thought that this all seems new and strange to us and him now: a new school soon, new people to know, but soon it will become familiar to us and part of everyday life and conversations.

Ninja Gun

Sometimes, I buy magazines to Wolfie, with toys in it. These toys are often what he asks for, Legos and more Thomas the Tank Engine toys for his railway networks. Sometimes, I buy him a random magazine with a random cheap toy. I used to like them a lot as a kid, sometimes more than fancy and expensive toysThey rarely lasted long, but I enjoyed them a lot, especially plastic guns for a reason, such as water pistols. So anyway, in one of them bought recently, there was this "ninja gun". Basically, a plastic gun with disk projectiles(they are meant to be shuriken I believe) and targets. The projectiles don't work, or rather the trigger on the gun does not. You press it and nothing happens. But it is a cool gun, it's a ninja gun. With a ninja on it. Apparently, such things do exist. Even though it does not work, it looks so cool that we'll keep it until it breaks. Which hopefully won't any time soon, as it feels quite sturdy.

The stocks of Second Cup's hot chocolate

I don't know if it is because she is an Englishwoman, but my wife really fell in love with Second Cups when she visited them the first time she came to Montreal. So when I traveled home and she had to stay at home, circa 2015-2016, I bought her not one, but two tubs of hot chocolate. I think I made one of the tubs a birthday present. I was all happy about it, but there was just one problem: my wife loves the coffee of Second Cup.It's chocolate, not so much, especially if it is not prepared and drunk there. I guess most of all, she loves the Second Cup experience. So I recently found out the two tubs in our cupboards, one of them unopened and... both out of date. I checked if we could still drink it, apparently not after more than a year, especially if you see small white grains in the mix (which I did). Moral of the story: I won't bother stocking on them, but we will visit one of their coffeeshops when we are back in Montreal.

Highland Cattles

A week and a half ago, we went to a local farm, one of Wolfie's favourite places. They have lots of animals to see, including Highland cattles. During my first trip to the UK, back when I was a child, we visited Scotland and the Highlands. We were very impressed to see the cattles, with their long shaggy coats. They look so exotic and so typically Scottish. I never get bored to see them.

Screaming like a banshee

A few days ago, we received the visit of a friend of my wife and her daughter (we saw them in the garden, respecting social distancing, etc.) Her friend is half Irish on her mother's side, but she considers herself English. "The better side of me is English", she told us when we discussed this. Later on,when we said her daughter seemed all right and happy at the idea of going back to school, she said: "Right now she is, but soon I will be screaming like a banshee for her to wake up and get there on time!" I said: "Screaming like a banshee? See, that must be your Irish side." She thought it was quite funny, I think this deserves to be a new great unknown line. On a side note, I love Ireland and Irish folklore.

Anybody read Beast Quest?

I bought this book second handed a couple of weeks ago. Not sure why. It was only £2.00. I guess that is why. I never read Beast Quest and Wolfie is still too young for it. I guess for two quids, it's in my price range. And it will remind of the time when I used to read gamebooks. I might be in for a treat, or I might feel stupid at every page and feel like I wasted my time and my money. All the same, I am curious. That's the kind of book I wish I had known when I was younger, it could have inspired me for our D&Dr games. Still, if nothing else, it has a cool cover, with what appears to be a nasty griffin, striking a young looking hero. Anyway, if anyone of you read Beast Quest books, please ell me in the comments.

Bug Hotel

This is a picture of a bug hotel, taken last week at our visit to a local farm. They're also called insect hotels and insect houses, but I prefer the term bug hotel. Well, I don't know if you know about them, but it seems that they've been cropping everywhere recently around here, for environmental purposes. Bug hotels helppollinisation, you see. They also look cool and quirky. This is actually the first one I have seen so far, even though some have been built in our neighbourhood. We will try to find more and I will take pictures of them.

A birthday wish from Malcolm McDowell

I come back on my birthday, which was a week and a half ago already. My brother PJ got me a very special birthday present: a birthday wish told by actor Malcolm McDowell. If you don't know who he is, he playedthe Alex DeLarge in A Clockwork Orange. Incidentally my favourite movie. My bro managed to do this through Cameo, which provides the services of celebrities or semi-celebrities for birthday and special celebration wishes. I won't get into details of what he said, but he was very funny. It is kind of strange to think he knows I exist (although he'll have forgotten before long I'm sure) and to hear him speaking of his iconic role to me. Anyway, that was one of the most original birthday presents I ever had.
