An acting opportunity

Those among you who have been following Vraie Fiction for years know that I love acting and that I have not done any kind of theater since 2011, to my great sadness. It was due to lack of opportunity (there were no longer classes running), more than lack of time. Well, my wife recently told me that she has read in one of the local Facebook pages she follows (my wife follows local news a lot) that there might be a new acting group created in our little town. It is meant to be a social group and would be run by a professional actress, who taught acting in one of the private schools here. I will keep my eyes and ears open, as I would love to join and do some acting again, even though it might only be to do acting exercises and improvisations and no stage work. Of course, it might never happen and if this group is created it might not fit my new life as a father. But I will certainly consider joining.

Deer and doe

I took this picture during our short weekend visit in Derbyshire. It was in an animal sanctuary. I had never seen so many deers in semi-liberty, and never so close. It was quite a sight. I took a few snapshots and decided to share one photo today, just for the sake of it, because deer and doe are so darn cute.

The nature of the Holy Grail

My mother-in-law sent me recently a link to an article about the Holy Grail. Back in another life, I used to be an academic and a medievalist at that, specialized in the Arthurian legend and the work of Chrétien de Troyes, who was the first to introduce the Grail in Le Conte du Graal. It remains to this day my favourite Arthurian romance. In the story, the Grail is not a cup like in subsequent versions and the many adaptations, but a plate or a bowl, to contain large amount of food. While it is mentioned that a wafer is in it, so there are associations with the Eucharist, there is no explicit association with Jesus's death and his blood. Its origins remain obscure, as well as its ultimate purpose. Perceval/Percival does not ask the question that could potentially reveal its nature: "Whom does the grail serve?" The romance being unfinished, we will never truly know about its core subject, the rest is pure speculations. My bet, and I might be wrong, is that what the Holy Grail is was never meant to be revealed. It was meant as a MacGuffin: it makes the story flow, it creates tensions and motivations for the character, but otherwise we do not know because we do not need to know. Moral of this post: sometimes I miss academia.

A red fox in the snow

It is not a "real" fox, it is a stuffed one of course, and it is not real snow either. All the same, I had want to share this display which I saw at the National Cardiff Museum, for a long time. I hope to put my readers in a seasonal mood, like I am. There is just something about a red fox in the snow.

Le gel au sol

Photo prise samedi matin.

Our neighbour the squirrel

It happened today, my wife was doing a bit of washing up when she saw it: a grey squirrel, running on the top of the fence. It ran along it, from one back garden to another, then jumped on a tree behind our house, then back on a fence, then jumped on another tree, then it was gone out of sight. I managed to show it to our son, who caught merely a glimpse of it. I took this picture at the National Museum Cardiff and I am using it here because I could not take a picture of the squirrel we saw today. Sadly this photo is blurry and sadly, the squirrel we have as neighbour is a grey one, not a red one. Still, I think every neighbourhood needs a squirrel.

Christmas buns

As we are less than a month away from Christmas now, I think it is fair game to start thinking about it. It's everywhere anyway. Which also means starting to stuff myself with seasonal food, such as these iced spiced buns from M&S. They are not quite the normal iced buns which you can find all year (and are delicious in their own right): they have more spice and some gooey stuff inside, and there is also a holly on top, made with icing and a cherry in lieu of their fruit. It's delicious. I haven't found them yet this year, but last year I stuffed myself with these buns and they were really yummy. Tis the season to be feasting, after all.

The 1988 Saguenay earthquake

My father reminded me today that it was the anniversary of the 1988 Saguenay earthquake. One of the few, but unfortunately not the last, natural catastrophe I lived. I had just got in my pjs after my shower when it happened. My father had just finished reading a newspaper article about blackouts and... earthquakes. Then there was that huge tremor and total blackout. I was shocked, but I did not have time to be scared.

The railway station dog

I am blogging again about trains, which is my favourite means of transport and one of my many obsessions. I took this picture at the National Railway Museum of York. It's a stuffed dog of a true train station dog. Apparently, they were fairly frequents in the train stations of old. You don't see them anymore, except stuffed like this one, kept as a memory. There is "Station Jim" at the Slough railway station, maybe the one and only attraction of this dreary town. Anyway, I find it a nice tradition, even though I am not a dog person. Every station should have its dog.

Question existentielle (316)

Wuthering Times

Well, it may not snow in this country this year, but it is certainly windy. The last few nights especially, you could hear it blowing outside. Yesterday morning there were broken branches everywhere. I didn't see any big ones, some were no bigger than twigs, but still it was as if there had been a hurricane.

Mince pies and an anniversary

When I first met Mrs Vraie Fiction fifteen years ago, it was in the common kitchen of the students residence. I was eating a mince pie. Since then, I eat a mince pie on the same date to celebrate our meeting anniversary. I blogged about it in 2008. And guess what I found two days ago in the kitchen? Somebody wanted to make sure I would not miss it. The ironic thing is that neither of us like mince pies all that much, it just happened that this was the dessert I was trying at the time.

Anthony Burgess, In Memoriam

Some people remember what they were doing when they learned about the murder of JFK, some people remember when they learned about the death of Princess Diana, I remember vividly when I learned about the death of Anthony Burgess. I was with my brother PJ picking up our neighbours to go to school, their TV was on, and on the news they announced that the author of A Clockwork Orange had died. I had discovered the movie a few months before and had read the novel a few weeks ago, within a day, as I couldn't put it down. I felt very sad learning about it, knowing that I had just discovered my favourite writer. I started reading his other books, and never looked back since. So Anthony Burgess died on the 22nd of November 1993. 2017 is the 100th anniversary of his birth. I often blogged about him over the years, I did it more extensively this year. I will do more until the year ends. Until then, I commemorate his departure.

Is winter coming to the UK?

Well, according to the weather forecast, we are set to have a proper winter, the coldest in years and lots of snow. I have been reading such news for weeks now. Months even. But everybody is skeptical, including me. Sure, we had a few cold days, but it's not like they have not been announcing Siberian winters before: read this blog post dating back from November 2015. We had a very mild one then. So everybody is saying what I said then: I'll believe it when I see it. They got to get it right one day.

A red kite on a branch

No, what you can see on the branch is not a bald eagle. The photo is not great, but it is a red kite, a sort of bird of prey that is very common here. We often see them flying at low altitude in this part of England, in the little town where I live more than many other places, so much so that I call them my neighbours. This picture was taken by my wife, on the very spot where she took this other picture. You can often find them sitting on a branch of that very tree. I like them a lot and seeing them so close never gets old.

Time for mulled wine

Something struck me recently: I haven't had mulled wine yet. This glass was drunk by my wife about a year ago in a local pub. And I am in the mood for it. Mulled wine is of course a drink associated with Christmas and I try to have one glass of it then, but we can have it before Christmastime starts officially. I usually find it all right to drink it as early as November. When it is cold outside, like now, I find it a very comforting drink. Not my drink of choice, but something I like to have to put myself in a seasonal mood. We also have a few bottles ready to use, but my wife and I cannot drink a whole bottle alone, we need guests. So ordering mulled wine in a pub is easier. Plus, the atmosphere of a pub adds to the enjoyment.

Lectures lentes...

The Manchurian Candidate

It is still a bit too early for Christmas reading suggestion, but thought I would give you one that fits this time of year. November, after all, is when American elections are held and we are still living the aftermaths of the last presidential ones. So I suggest The Manchurian Candidate by Richard Condon, which I read a year ago and had wanted to come back to it since. The source material of a great movie and a very poor remake (seriously why remake a classic into a cheap techno thriller?), it's a powerful novel in its own right. It is a spy novel, it's a satire, it's science fiction, it's a cautionary tale and it's fully and perfectly all these genres. Raymond Shaw is a POW, Korean War veteran, he won the Congressional Medal of Honor... Yet he did not deserve it. He is a fake, fabricated hero turned mindless assassin, after being brainwashed by the Communists. Thus completely rewired, he is a slave of both the East and his own anti-Communist mother, whom he loathes. In one of the many paradoxes of the novel, that makes Shaw a true tragic figure. The Manchurian Candidate of the title is his stepfather, Senator John Iselin, a vulgar and stupid man manipulated and dominated by his wife, a modern Lady Macbeth and the true villain of the story. And there's Ben Marco, Shaw's former commanding officer, the only man capable of stopping a conspiracy that could turn the USA into a dictatorship and lead to World War III. Read this, watch the movie and don't bother with the remake.

Hurricane Wolfie

Something became obvious when baby Wolfie became a strong enough to stand on his own: my son is a force of chaos. He just takes stuff away from drawers, DVDs off the shelves, he throws books off the shelves, toys off the boxes, you should just see the look of our living room when he feels energetic. Sometimes I wonder if it worth tidying up. I might take a picture for the blog one day. I said yesterday on Facebook: "If they are looking for a name for the next hurricane, I suggest Wolfie." I think it deserves to be a new great unknown line.

The new Friday sandwich treat

Back in my old job, there was a sandwich shop where I went every Friday to treat myself with a baguette filled with chicken mayo and olives. Oh, and tomatoes, onions and lettuce as well, but what made it a treat was the olives. This was my way of celebrating the coming weekend and start it on a good note. Well, I got lucky in my new job, as there is a sandwich shop right down the corner where I work and they have... green olives! And the woman at the counter knows that I love them, so as you can see, she gives me extras. Although it does not quite taste the same as the old baguette, this is my new Friday treat.

Demeter... or maybe Ceres?

I am blogging again about yesterday's topic, this neo or pseudo classic sculpture I saw in Derbyshire. I mentioned that it was probably the Greek goddess of harvest and agriculture Demeter. But it could just as well be Ceres, its Roman equivalent. I say equivalent, but Greek and Roman deities are never quite the same and not always even related: Romans associated their gods to the Greek ones, but one could question this association. I always preferred the Greek gods to the Romans's. I always found the Greek ones far cooler, same as their mythology. All the same, some people get lazy and just give gods Roman names, which always gets on my nerves. So my money is still on Demeter for this one, out of principle.

Is this Demeter?

I took this picture in the Derbyshire,in a manor or rich family's house whose name I cannot remember, where there were lots of art and lots of pseudo-classical sculptures like this one. The Greek mythology geek that I am took lots of photos of these statues, hoping to identify them later. I think this one represents Demeter, the goddess of agriculture and harvest. I might be wrong, but the basket full of... something (flowers? fungi?) she has on her head makes me think of a fertility goddess at the very least. Maybe her daughter Persephone? I might be wrong, but my bet is on Demeter.

"...can we start thinking about Christmas yet?"

This is what a friend of mine asked me on Facebook two days ago (the same one who was our host not long ago), when I was putting on my Wall a picture of some Halloween drinks leftovers which I had for poison that night. So, at this time in the year, can we start thinking about Christmas yet? Rhetorical question, but I think it also deserves to be a great unknown line. She also said that she was waiting for the Christmas reading suggestions. I wonder what to read these days (when I have time to read), let alone suggest! But getting the Christmas reading list ready would be a good idea all the same.

Monsieur Bonheur

A troll in York

I took this picture in a shop in York, you can see here a proper Scandinavian troll. The monster, mind you, not the Internet creature. This one looks very much friendly (not to mention clean, with his reddish cheeks and nose) to be much of a monster. I love trolls and other mythological critters, especially from Norse folklore. I was very tempted to buy it, but he was too big for the flat we had back then, or to bring home. I actually knew that brand of trolls already: my family bought a similar one in Sweden, with the same colours and features. If I remember correctly, it is a Norwegian brand. All the same, I want to start a collection, but we still don't have much space here.

An invitation to Derbyshire

My wife has a childhood friend, the oldest one she ever had, who lives with her husband and child in Derbyshire. We visited them once, a few years ago, when it was only her and her husband. They have a lovely big house in the middle of nowhere. It looks great and is very comfy and they have something that really triggers my envy: a proper fireplace. We really enjoyed our time there and we had been wanting to visit them again. My wife's friend had her child the same year little Wolfie was born, only a few weeks later. So she invited our now little family to visit her little family. We have not decided of a date yet, it will probably be at some point after the new year, but this is really something we look forward to. They are excellent hosts and Derbyshire is beautiful and full of character. And we have grown a bit more adventurous since we've had Wolfie, who is now far more sociable with other children and we are eager to travel more with him. So anyway, we are really looking forward to it.

The Day of the Pin

It was Remembrance Day today, which means making sure one has a poppy on display. I have issues with poppies, or rather with the needle: I cannot keep the darn thing on. I blogged about it back in 2014. So in many ways, it becomes for me the Day of the Pin, where I try to fix it on my jumper or coat, prickle myself and lose the darn poppy. Then I buy another one, until I lose it, then another one, and so on and so forth. Today, my wife and I discovered that we had forgotten to buy one, we quickly did at the earliest occasion. But I decided against taking pins with them. We have a very young child who puts everything in his mouth after all, and I'd rather be careful. And that was an excuse not to be forced to fix it on. Now all I need to do is find a way to put the poppy on display without the pin. Any suggestions?

A visit to the local Mountain Warehouse?

I mentioned yesterday that we are turning into winter. And my wardrobe needs in some aspects at least some serious renewal. In other words, my gloves and thick socks have holes in them. And the only clothes shop that I genuinely like is Mountain Warehouse. Luckily, we have a local one. So, although I hate shopping, especially clothes shopping, a short trip there should be tolerable. And I will have some warm and comfy socks. I am not joking, the ones of Mountain Warehouse are my favourite socks, bare none.

Fall's Over

I drank this beer during our time in Devon, ironically at the end of summertime. But Fall's Over for The Exeter Brewery truly is an ale for autumn turning into winter, one season falling into another. It is dark, malty and, well, dark and malty. I haven't had one since that time, but it would be the perfect beer these days, as autumn is truly turning into winter, with temperatures seriously going down. When I say winter, I mean an English winter. Snow will be missing. All the same, I can't help but think that Fall's over. Sorry for the lousy pun.

Frank Drebin sings the American National Anthem

A year ago, I was waking up and America, or maybe Russia, had elected Donald Trump as President of the United States. I was wondering how to mention it on the blog, how to remember that hard wake up and I thought I better laugh at it. I know the Swine in Chief has a rather fetishist love for his country's national anthem, so this is I believe the proper homage for the man and those, in the US and abroad, who put him into power. The Star-Spangled Banner, sung by Lieutenant Frank Drebin in The Naked Gun. I remember fairly little of the movie and its sequels, but this is just unforgettable.

Limoncello on the house

It was recently the birthday of my wife and to celebrate, we went to a small local Italian restaurant, which we had never tried before, but heard some good things about. It was an authentic Italian restaurant, by this I mean it has authentic Italians in its staff. It was very pleasant experience and we will go back. I mostly behaved myself and did not speak much Italian so as not to embarrass my wife. But okay, I did say a few words, just for kicks. And talking of kicks, as it was her birthday we received a shot of limoncello each on the house. It was the first time I ever tried that liqueur and I have to say, it has a strong kick. I very seldom drink digestives, as I don't think about ordering them. But limoncello might become a new thing for me, I really enjoyed it.

The local Wimpy

Here is a bit of bad news which I learned yesterday: the local Wimpy is closing soon. This made us really sad, my wife and I. We haven't gone there since little Wolfie was born, but it was one of these places we liked. Granted, it was not great gastronomy, but for fast food chain it was honest food and a posh, fancier McDonald's. And it was nice to have something different locally, a chain but not a big chain. I blogged about it back in April 2016 (where I used this very picture) and why I love it. I hope we can find time to go have one last meal there (cholesterol be damned!) before it closes down for good.

Lisa Simpson's teaching approach

To make you smile this evening, I thought I would present a short clip from The Simpsons, back from when it was as intelligent as it was funny. This is in fact a number of scenes, from the second season's episode Blood Feud. If you find Lisa over the top in the way she teaches her little sister, I find her sensible. In fact, I do the same thing with Wolfie. And he does have a lemur plush toy.

First fireworks

I blogged recently about fireworks here on Bonfire Night. Well, yesterday we went to see my wife's university friends (we spent the night there) and celebrate Bonfire Night with a home made fireworks display in their back garden. There were lots of children, in fact they were outnumbering the adults: the three kids of our hosts, the two of my wife's other uni friends, then of course little Wolfie. Our son was not the youngest: there was a six months old baby girl there as well. So it was Wolfie's first direct and conscious experience of fireworks. He really enjoyed the colours, but the noisy and smoky ones he did not like and after a big bang that really sounded like a gunshot we had to watch it from inside because Wolfie was crying a lot. It does take a lot to scare him, but this was a very loud noise. All the same, he really enjoyed his time there.

Histoire d'orignal (tab...)

Beauty and the Boar

I blogged not long ago about the "book of the year" my dad used to buy every year, which I always loved, as it had plenty of stuff about fantastic creatures and fun stories. It also had sometimes short stories and fairy tales to read. I don't remember all of them, in fact I most likely forgot a lot of them, as my father recently sent me some pictures of one, which are obviously to accompany one version or another of Beauty and the Beast. And I thought it was quite interesting, as the Beast is pictured as an anthropoid boar. A rather benign and friendly looking one, although he is certainly ugly. If you think it looks like the Beast of the Disney movie, you are partially wrong: my bet is that it was inspired by the Cocteau version, which is a true masterpiece. I intend to put some fairy tales on my reading list in the upcoming weeks, I think I should try to re-read Beauty and the Beast.

Question existentielle (315)

The month of fireworks

I try to find virtues to the month of November, and I have to say that in England it has at least one: it is the month of fireworks, because of Bonfire Night. Or Guy Fawkes Night as it is often called. Not that I am a big fan of fireworks, or of Guy Fawkes (frankly I always felt very foreign to it) but it does give a bit of colour and excitement to an otherwise grey looking time of year. And, while the big night is on the 5th of November, firework displays last the whole month and beyond. Strangely enough, I have not seen any so far, but I did smell yesterday smoke in the air. Fireworks have a number of downsides which I will try to blog about soon, but at least it makes November here... different.

Wolfie's library card

There is a small event, yet a very important one which I wanted to mention here: last week my baby boy received his very first library card. It was his mother's brilliant idea. He already loves books, so it was the logical thing to do. I don't know why, but I felt quite moved holding it in my hand.

"The dead are alive"

I have never been a big fan of the first of November: it is after Halloween, I feel the post-Halloween blues, November is a month I generally dislike and so on. But I am learning to appreciate the month and its beginning. One movie in particular made me rediscover and enjoy that date, albeit by proxy. I am talking of course of Spectre, the last James Bond movie. It has its share of flaws, but I enjoyed it nevertheless and it is a brilliant piece of cinematography. The pre-title sequence is set during the Mexican Day of the Dead. Far more fun than All Saints' Day. It is a brilliant opening and has a great sense of place, character and atmosphere. You will find a short bit of it below. I think watching the movie might become a new November tradition for me.
