Bronze Anniversary

Today, my wife and I are celebrating our 19th wedding anniversary. Which is our bronze anniversary, unless I am mistaken. I checked online before blogging, of course. Suggestion for gifts: something in bronze (duh!), or some jewel with an aquamarine (for whatever reason it is the gemstone of 19th wedding anniversary), or something else. We do celebrate it the same way every year: dinner out in some nice restaurant or pub (more rarely a pub). Now that we are parents, it ends up being all about Wolfie and a bit of a rehearsal for his birthday. And there is nothing wrong with that.

Liverpool-Manchester Railway Journeys

I took this picture at the National Railway Museum in York. My favourite museum, bare none. I'm sharing it because from time to time I like to blog about trains and show some cool train stuff. Such as this stylish wagon. I lived in Liverpool for a bit and I did made the train journey to Manchester, although never in such a fancy wagon. As stylish as it is' I'm not certain it was as comfortable back then as it is now. All the same, this picture reminds me of both cities and my time there.

The Duck Gang

I took this picture in Brighton, at the Upside Down House. It was a pleasant enough visit, for about fifteen minutes. Otherwise, there wasn't all that much to see. But to make the visit more eventful and, I guess, justify the price of entry, they had hidden rubber ducks all around the house, so you could look and find the members of the Duck Gang. Twenty of them. There's no reward, as you can see on the WANTED poster. I guess desperadoes are not what they used to be.

Haunted Mansion (Lego)

Well, it's not because I'm a grown-up that I cannot enjoy Lego play sets. So, for my last birthday, I received the Lego Haunted Mansion. I wish there were these kinds of sets when I was a kid. It's a three sets in one, as you can also make a ghost train and a ghost ship. But truly, what I wanted to have is a proper haunted house. This one not only has a ghost, but a ghostly tree, a lady vampire, a werewolf, a skeleton and a Frankenstein's monster, among other things. Wolfie and I have started building it. We will keep it on display until Halloween. And we will not only have it on display, but we will play with the critters that come in it and I intend to invent a few scary (but suitable for children) stories.

Murphy (Board Game)

There are times during childhood when you think, you hope, you will have lots of fun with a game or an activity, maybe even create fond memories, but you end up disappointed. It happened to me with a board game. I loved board games as a child, especially those that had dramatic elements. We used to play with the board game, my brothers and I, then develop it into make belief games. And I had read a short but positive review about a board game named Murphy, so I convinced my parents to buy it. It was about a private detective agency in charge of finding heirs of a fortune in Asia. The box cover looked quite appealing, with old fashioned pulp crime fiction tropes and a dash of exoticism. The board itself looked really nice too, basically a map of Asia. Well, I never was so disappointed in a board game. We could not make head or tail of the rules and we abandoned after a few attempts. I genuinely thought it was going to be a mix of Sam Spade or Philip Marlowe meets Indiana Jones. But hey, really nice cover. Anyway, did anyone among you managed to play it? And enjoy it? I'm curious.

Green Camo

Last Sunday, we went to a little gathering with the two uni besties of my wife and their families. All in all, there were seven children, ranging from four to fifteen, if I'm not mistaken. The oldest kid, a boy who is now in the cadet, had old army surplus trousers that didn't fit him anymore. Like proper army trousers, camo and all. He generously gave them to Wolfie. Our son loves his camo clothes, it's like free clothes for our War Game. And now he has authentic army clothes, in genuine khaki green. Wolfie loves the colour green, I think it might be why he loves camo clothes actually.

Relire Mafalda

Puzzles for Spies

Oh the treasures one can find in the local bookshop! And this year, I am really developing an interest for all things spies. Anyway, during my last stop at the local bookshop, I saw Puzzles for Spies. I did not buy it, although I was very tempted. Not for me, of course not, but for my son, who loves these kinds of games. It's produced by the GCHQ, so it must have at least some level of authenticity. Be that as it may, it can also inspire us in our games. So I might buy the book for his birthday.

Dungeons & Dragons (about an anniversary)

I try to mark the time every year, even though I don't know the exact date. But anyway: my brothers and I, as well as some friends who were playing with us at the time, started our Dungeons & Dragons campaign back in August 1992. The world we had invented wasn't as developed as it became, but he already had potential. Now decades later, my brothers and I don't play together anymore, however I have started a new campaign in the same world with Wolfie. So the world lives on and helps develop someone else's imagination.

Aquila on Ancient Civilisations

Wolfie does not get mail very often, but when he does, he usually receives the best mail. And I know we are late in July, but I wanted to share this month's issue of Aquila Magazine. Don't judge a magazine by the cover, but what a cool cover it is. Although I'm not sure what this statue comes from. Inca? I would be tempted to say yes, or at least South American, but I really don't know. Be that as it may, if this July's issue is not entirely sold out and you have young kids, go and get a copy. It's great fun.

Menaud maître-draveur, Félix-Antoine Savard

Horror Hotel

I took this picture in Brighton. More specifically, at the Brighton Pier. During what people now call Summerween, in the middle of a hot day, as I am getting more and more into a spooky mood and longing for Halloween, this is a lovely sight. As a child, I used to love to go to such place, although my parents rarely allowed me to. Haunted and cursed hotels are great settings for horror stories, by the way. I might work on one. Be that as it may, this sight gives me a pleasant shiver.

Future Train Journeys

I took this picture at the National Railway Museum in York and I'm sharing it today because I'm blogging about trains. Again. If I'm not mistaken, it's the Old Coppernob. But I just added it because it looks nice. So now that Wolfie is on holidays, we are thinking about our next holiday destination. Which means that we might travel there by train. I hope so: for me, travelling by train is part of the fun, sometimes I even prefer it to the destination. Even if we travel by bus or plane for our next holidays, there is always a future train journey at some point to look forward to.
