Some movement on the work front

I have some news about the job search: I will soon have a video interview. Not for something very big as it is a contract of a few months. It is nevertheless quite interesting: money is pretty good without being great, I would be working from home for the first three months (due to the pandemic of course), then I would need to show up at the office from time to time and it is more or less the old train commute I had and I missed. So I would be saving a good deal of money on commute cost, I'd be working safely from home and would have time to look for something else. I don't want to count my chickens before they hatch, but I do have a good feeling about this opportunity and I am cautiously optimistic. The skills and experiences needed match my background to a t. So I am keeping my fingers crossed and will let you know of developments.

Papillon

The apples are green

I took this picture during our last family walk. We were in a posh part of our little English town and the branches from an apple tree were overflowing from an orchard. It was heavy with fruits. As you can see, they are of course still green. I love apples, not so much for their taste as for what they represent: it is maybe the most typical fruit of autumn. When I look at their colour, it reminds me of the coming autumn and tell me how close or how far we are from my favourite season. We still have a long time to go, summer has only started, but still, it's nice to see apples. In a couple of weeks, the fruits will be red and I will look at them in excitement and anticipation.

Of old westerns

Recently, I rewatched The Magnificent Seven. Not one of the many remakes, for which I care not, but the old 1960 film. And I know it is a remake of a Japanese movie, but the western is a classic and a great film in its own right. It must have been the third time I watched it. I remember distinctly the very first time I did, I must have been seven or eight. I watched it with my mother. She was never keen on violent movies and was never happy when dad made us watch some stuff that was really violent, but somehow she loved old fashioned westerns, the ones made before the spaghetti western craze, so we watched them with her. She particularly liked Yul Brynner in this one, so since then he's the one of the seven I root for the most. There's just something about a good guy all clad in black that makes him uber cool. But rewatching it, I also appreciated the villain played by Eli Wallach. What a magnificent bastard! What I also love in The Magnificent Seven is the end of era feel: these men are larger than life heroes of quasi mythical stature when we meet them, or at least this is what their reputation would let you believe, yet they truly are broken men looking for a job. Anyway, I think I might watch more westerns these days. If you have any suggestions, please give them to me in the comments section.

Visiting the local bookshop again

Here it is, at long last, I finally, finally, finally pay the local bookshop a visit, after at least six months! And to make it even better, I did it during the Independent Bookshop Week, which is ending today. It was good to be back, after a few minutes of getting used to the safety protocol, I was back in my element. I bought a few books, which was exhilarating, and even got a new £5 voucher! After a few months of lockdown and pandemic, it felt like some kind of normality was now in effect.

Blue Caribou Snack Bar

The great things you learn sometimes wasting time on social media: there is an authentic Québécois snack bar in Manchester, of all places. It's called the Blue Caribou Snack Bar and they serve authentic poutine. Now, I'm not an expert on poutine, it's not my favourite québécois dish, but I do like it from time to time, it tastes like home. Be that as it may, I now have another reason to go back to Manchester, whenever it will be possible again.

The storms to come

My dad took this picture and sent it to me. We were chatting with them on Facetime when a huge storm broke out and there was a power cut. So our chat got cut as well. And father took this picture to show us the storm. Just like at my parents' place, there is a heatwave here and they are forecasting storms in the next few days. I am looking forward to it. Because it should bring cooler weather and that would be most welcome. And because I love storms.

The expat's celebration

As you probably know, today is Saint John the Baptist's Day, also Quebec's National Day. I am lucky enough this year to celebrate it with a young boy who now is starting to be conscious about special days and feasts. Yesterday, I told him that the 24th is the National Day of Québec and all Quebeckers, like him and me. He asked me: "Whose birthday is it?" I think there is still a lot of work to be done with my boy to make him feel something else than British. You may remember that last year, I was happy to discover that the Quebec government Office in London has a twitter account. I was then hoping to be able to plan a celebration among other Quebec expats, I was even thinking about taking some time off work to go there (wherever "there" would be) with my wife and Wolfie. Obviously, it did not happen, for obvious reasons. Maybe next year.

Je me souviens...

Donc, je me souviens.

The saffron burglary

I read a bit of crime news recently that made my day, something that was both odd and quite interesting: burglars stole £50,000 worth of saffron from a London warehouse. 10kg of saffron, to be precise. Needless to say, it is the world's most expensive spice. It is very strange and so very British, what with their love of curry. Also, it illustrates how pricy spices can still be, enough that a theft can be quite profitable. I think there is a crime fiction story to invent from this true crime story. Although the first thing I thought when I saw this headline was "the spice must flow". Still, I think the story fits crime fiction better than scifi.

Sort of holiday Monday

While I am still technically employed for a month and a half and I have not been at work since May, today is the first Monday of de facto unemployment for me. But I will stay positive, or at least not overly pessimistic: I sent a few jobs applications and some of them have already been noticed. In fact, there is a chance that I will go for an interview in the coming weeks. I will keep in mind what my mum told me ten years ago in somewhat similar circumstances: "take it as a holiday". So this Monday is a sort of holiday Monday.

Polar maritime

I found £10!

I had a lucky day today: as we were walking home from our daily walk, shortened as we got into a muddy path, I saw a ten pounds note in the grass. There was nobody nearby, so I took the note. I have already a fairly good idea of what I will buy with it and where. But in any case, I'm quite happy about this struck of luck.

Independent Bookshop Week

Little bit of news I got from my local bookshop on social media: since yesterday it is the Independent Bookshop Week. It will carry on until the 27th of June. I love the new promotional design, with the reading place and the bookshelves in the back. This is heaven in a nutshell. I don't know how we will celebrate Father's Day today, but I might go there and treat myself to a book, just because: 1)it's important to support local busunesses, 2)I haven't been there in ages and 3)what better way to celebrate fatherhood than show that you promote literacy?

Solstice, summer and heatwave

Today is the summer solstice, so that means: 1)it is officially the first day of astronomical summer (although for me the season starts with the month), 2)it will be a very long day, 3)at least the days will go shorter after today, albeit we won't see the change until much later. You can probably guess that I am not the biggest fan of summertime (read this post for more details). But at least, it is not too hot... for now: they are forecasting a heatwave in the coming week. So I must brace myself.

"Katie the Monster"

Wolfie does not do much if any drawing, maybe at three he's a bit young for that, however he is very keen for me to draw for him. Even though, I must confess, I am a pretty rubbish artist (always have been). Most of the time, he requests trucks and tractors, but sometimes he does not mind that I draw him a monster or two, and I can be quite decent drawing monsters. So I recently draw this one, which his a mix between a boar, a hound and a porkupine, with of course a snake's tongue. Or something of the sort. Wolfie really liked it and when I ask what name should he have, he said "Katie the Monster". I have no idea why he wanted that name. One of my wife's friends is named Katie, but it's not like she looks remotely like this (thankfully) or Wolfie dislikes her. Maybe we should rename him/her, because this is not flattering for Katie and the monster needs a more terrifying name.

"The Daytripper"

Picture taken at the National Railway Museum in York. I wanted to share it here for two reasons. 1)It struck me during our visit at the museum that not all trains of old are sleek, elehant and glamourous. They can be just common and kind of ugly, even tacky. This wagon is, although of course it does not date back from the blessed era of steam trains. And maybe it's only because of the terrible promotional image, with that rather silly looking Englishwoman and her ridiculous hat. I also share it because 2)it shows that not all train journeys are long ones for long stays somewhere. Sometimes you can go on a day trip, just for kicks. Or you could, before the plague. I prefer longer journeys, but quick trips for a day out are pleasant enough and I do miss them too.

Father's Day's Box

This Sunday will be Father's Day and I don't know how we will celebrate it this year. I do have an idea on how we could have done it though: Bean & Brew in Wallingford has made a special box for Father's Day. You can see it on this picture. It has fancy cheese, artisan bread, cured meat (though I hate ham), scones with clotted cream, other stuff not on the picture (they mention lemon cake and finger sandwiches, but not the brownies) and, according to their promotion: "A Bottle of Beer for the Man Himself ". All this for £32.50, a true bargain. Sadly, I think we might be a bit far for home delivery and apparently they are already sold out. I'm very sad.

Last day "at work"

Well, today's the day, so to speak. I am not going to the office, but at 9:00AM my colleague, the only one I got along fairly well, will come by and collect the things I have here that are company properties: the laptop, the headset, the keys and that's about it. Although I will be officially employed by them until the end of July and I did haven't worked since May, this will be my last working day, so to speak. It will be a relief, because I never liked the job much, but all the same, I can't help feeling a tad resentful, mostly because I think they were bad employers. So it will be a bittersweet end. But at least I can now put that behind me and focus on the future. The last sentence sounds cliché, but I will not miss this job all that much.

Spooky reads in preparation

I was discussing with my brother PJ recently and the subject came on to what we wanted to read, what books we had bought last and what we wanted to get our hands on. And he said, astonished: "We already have Halloween in mind and we're not at the summer solstice yet." Which I must admit is kind true. But I am always preparing Halloween, pretty much when the year starts. And I long for autumn too, of course. And if I ever think of something else, Amazon sends me a gentle reminder: today it suggested that I purchase Dead Leaves: 9 Tales from the Witching Season from Kealan Patrick Burke (don't know if I ever read him, but I'd need to check my anthologies). I'm very tempted to do it, although being redundant I want to be extremely careful about spending money. And I already have a scary stories reading program planned for autumn, program which will start as early as August. That said, I could squeeze in these nine tales easily.

The local bookshop reopening

I have received some really great news: the local bookshop is reopening today. Of course, there will be strict rules to follow: only eight people will be allowed at all time, hand sanitizer will be provided and a two meters distance will need to be kept between people at all time. I might go pay them a visit quickly if I have time tomorrow and if it looks safe. I haven't been there for a very long time and I think local businesses will need some help.

The time for storms

Yesterday, we had a storm, the second one in a week and if I am not mistaken the second one of the year. It was a fairly strong one, with heavy rain and a good bit of thunderous thunder. Apparently, a lightning strike set a house on fire in one of the towns nearby. But I could enjoy it in the security (relative security I guess, given what happened elsewhere) of home. I love storms, been loving them since I'm a child and I have never been scared of them. More are forecast this coming week and as I can stay home, I am looking forward to enjoy them here. Now is the time for storms.

(Re)disccovering The Wind in the Willows

Back when I was a child, I was quite fond of the stop motion animated series based on The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame. It was one of these programs contributed to feed
my love for England and for British culture. I was watching it around this time of year, during the summer holidays, as there was a channel specialized in children programs that was showing new cartoons, and old classics or, in this case, adaptations of old children classics. It gave me an impression of England, shamelessly nostalgic, that reality could never quite shake off. So this year, I bought the original novel and I have starte reading it this month. It is like rediscovering friend from years ago you haven't seen in decades.

Cutting branches

This morning, we were woken up early by workers cutting branches on the trees that are on the business building next to our garden. It was noisy as hell. Not only did it wake us up, but it also scared the living daylights out of Domino. To say that we hated it was an understatement. Thankfully, only the lower branches were cut and the trees are still standing. They are large trees and, while the lower branches were invading the alleyway (our secret passage) and sometimes putting shades on the garden, I always loved the way they filtered the lights. And hid the building behind us, as a sort of natural barrier. It seems that someone decided that the trees and shrubbery in the whole neighbourhood needed trimming, as we saw and heard the sound of chainsaws everywhere. It only stopped in the middle of afternoon. It will take time to get used to it and I am not sure I like what they did, but at least the trees are still standing.

Roman Britain

This picture comes from the Facebook page of the British Museum. It is the statuette of a horseman and his horse made in Roman Britain in the 3rd or the 4th century. The rider probably had a spear in his hands. He now misses the spear and his left arm. You can read more about it here. I visited a long time ago (about twenty years now, I'd say) the section of the museum on Roman Britain and I remember enjoying it quite a lot. It showed a different perspective to Roman society, in a very remote and then exotic part of the Empire. I can't wait to see it again.

Pubs versus Schools

The funny things one finds on the internet. As the UK is going to very slowly get out of lockdown, I saw this hilarious meme and I thought I had to share it. Hopefully you will laugh as much as I did. So yes, the schools are reopening, but as I am typing this the pubs and restaurants are still closed and will probably remain so for a while. As a man in his forties who needs a healthy dose of alcohol to get through the week, and in spite of my natural misanthropy which makes me avoid my fellow humans like the plague, I do think it is vital to reopen the pubs as soon as possible. Because there's nothing like a few hours in British pub to improve your morale when things are grim.

Ces temps-ci, ils commencent à me manquer.

"My" old train

Firstly, as it is sort of in topic, you might want to know what happened about the e-meeting I had on Monday: it is confirmed I will be made redundant, although it will not be official immediately. I am disappointed, but also relieved. It was shorter than expected, which is good and my boss was online, but her camero was off, unlike my other colleagues and myself. WhenI told my wife, she said it was kind of rude. Maybe my boss had her reasons, but it kind of sums up my time there really: not being part of the team, with bosses that are ever unavailable and cannot be bothered with you.

But I digress. I have now more free time and when I am not job hunting, I spend precious time with my family and we go walking. We have found a few publis paths nearby with a bit of research on the internet and through friends. On the same day that I was made redundant, we found one near my old commute, where we actually saw the train I used to take pass by. It reminded me that, while my old job was not perfect, it was far better than the one I just left and that there will be opportunities out there eventually. It also reminded me how much I actually enjoyed my old train commute compared to the bus journeys I had to take every day. Las time we used it was in September for our short holiday, and setting foot on it felt like putting my feet in comfy old shoes. I never get tired of train travels, even for a journey I do every day. So I was excited to see "my" old train again and I keep thinking I might commute on it again for my future job. I hope so anyway.

Knowing about tractors

One of Wolfie's favourite books is Usborne's Big Book of Tractors. He literally cannot get bored with it, as it is on his favourite topic. (Well, that and trains and maybe trucks and construction vehicles, but tractors have a special place in his heart, I don't know why.) After reading it again to him for the umpteenth time, my wife said: "I'd never thought I would know so much about tractors." Which deserves to be a great unknown line.

Lilas

The E-Meeting

As you know from last week, my job is currently at risk of redundancy, due to the current pandemic. I am going to have a video meeting with my employer today, about my situation. I'm not having any illusion about what will most likely happen: the writing has been on the wall for a few months already, before the lockdown. All the same, I'm dreading it, so wish me luck.

The local Travelodge

Some of our recent family walks lead us to the local Travelodge, which is of course closed due to the pandemic. The Travelodge was opened fairly recently, and I only saw it for the frist time last year. We never went in there, it is not in the nicest part of town, close to the business estate and right by the trainline and an ugly parking. It looks pretty bland. But looking at the empty resto-bar on ground floor, my wife and I we thought that we should go there for a drink and a bite when the lockdown is over. Not sure why we want that. Maybe because it's nearby-ish, maybe simply because it'll be a place we have not been in yet, even though it's local. Strange how our minds work in strange times.

Peregrin falcon at the church

Well, it is not the reason why we live in this town, but it is pretty cool local news anyway: a family of peregrin falcons have nested in one of the churches here. I blogged about it before in French. A photographer took this picture recently and shared it on social media, I thought I would put it here. Impressive.

New Wolfism

We went to a family walk today, which ended up longer than expected. It was very nice and I'm glad we did it. Wolfie has a pretty good walking method: he asks us to go a bit further, then a bit further, then at some point he tells me: "I'm tired because I got tiny legs." And then I must carry him in my arms all the way home. I mentioned recently his Wolfisms, well, this is a new one. At least he keeps me active. And I can exercice my arms as well as my legs.

First lemonade of the year

I don't like lemonade all that much, except during summertime, when I find the lemon taste very refreshing. It was hot enough recently, practically summer, so we bought some lemonade with our grocery shop.Nothing too fancy, some cheap "juice drink" from Sainsbury's. I miss the home made lemonane made of fresh lemons we find in some independent cafés here, but given the current pandemic, I won't have any, unless I decide to make my own (now that's a thought). Anyway, I had one glass of this one, which tasted nice enough. The only problem is that the temperature dropped rather dramatically, so I won't enjoy it as much in the upcoming days.

Jack and the Beanstalk (and Wolfie)

I took this picture at Sundown Adventureland and as usual I am sharing it here because it goes perfectly well with today's topic. Anyway, yesterday and the day before yesterday I cut the rosemary by the entrance of our house because it got way too big. Wolfie wanted to assist me in this exercise and was adamant that I cut a lot of the rosemary and the weed that had grown as well. Apparently, he does not want it to "turn into a beanstalk" and for "the Englishman" to come down. I never thought that he remembered Jack and the Beanstalk so well and that it gave him such a strong impression. I bought him a book with the fairy tale a few months ago. We read it a couple of times, but that was it. I'm glad he has such a strong imagination, although I hope he does not become scare of giants living in the clouds.

Treize truites

Redundancy again

As you know I have been in furlough for the last month and was meant to be until further notice. Unfortunately, I learned today from a phone call from HR that my job is currently at risk of redundancy, due to the pandemic and the way it affected our business. I am disappointed, but I expected it. To be honest, I think the writing is on the wall and "at risk" is just a figure of speech. I am supposed to have a meeting on Monday with my employer on Monday to see if I can turn things around, but this is really a formality. To be honest, I have been unhappy at work for a while now and part of me is relieved about it. What I must do now is find a new job asap, in very difficult circumstances and in the meantime negotiate my departure.

Ordering books from the local bookshop?

Well, it seems that I think about books more than I actually read them (I still read a fair amount since the beginning of the pandemic), but I am considering buying some more, even though I still have plenty of unread stuff on the bookshelves. And even though it is against my reading strategy. I will not do this out of pure selfish reasons. Our local bookshop has been closed down until further notice, however they are still taking orders online. On their website, they said that ordering books like this would help them tremendously in these difficult times. And I do have a title or two I would like to buy. Buying online does not come naturally to me, because part of the pleasure of bookshopping is checking on the shelves and finding a title I had no idea existed, or I had forgotten about. But if I want to be able to do this again and do it locally, I think it would be better if I make an effort and make an order. Because I'd hate for our bookshop to shut down permanently.

Playmobil's Police HQ and Prison

I found a new toy from Playmobil which got Wolfie very interested. Although it is a bit much and I have no reason right now to buy it for him, I'd really, really, really love to. It's a Police Headquarter with Prison and it won a price for preschool toys apparently (see picture). It has cops, criminals, it is completed with surveillance equipment and towers. The hours of fun I could have, I mean he could have playing with it, as well as building a mind to appreciate crime fiction (like his Playmobil police car). I might buy it for his birthday, if I can wait that long.

Question existentielle (360)

Helicopter sighting

There is something that I have been noticing recently when we are out in the garden (which is fairly often as we've had nice weather): there has been quite a lot of helicopters flying above us recently. Airplanes too, but mainly helicopters, or at least they are more noticeable. Some are small and probably civilian ones, others are larger and seem to be army vehicles. Maybe it is a sign of summertime, maybe I just notice them more because the sky is clear and blue. Be that as it may, I have always been excited to see helicopters, now spotting them makes my day.

Carcajou

The Sword in the Stone

I took this picture at the Crich Tramway Village in Derbyshire, more precisely in this little pathway in the woodlands by the village. It is the sword in the stone, most likely the one from the Arthurian legend. And no, it's not the same one as Excalibur. I have seen more impressive displays, but in the woods, it's still a pretty nice sight. I was rewatching the pictures from our day there and it struck me that I must make time to reread proper Arthurian literature. Or read the numerous pieces I have not done so since I finished my PhD, and that was a few decades ago. I am a bit ashamed to admit it really. I need to check my bookshelves, but I know I have at least a few titles here and I think one of my reading objectives this year (and the next) should be to rediscover the Matter of Britain.
