A Tale of Two Wakefields

Here is a little bit of news which made my day yesterday. If you are feeling low because of the pandemic, or for any othe reason, this should cheer you up. Or it should put you in a good mood. So anyway, and Englishwoman from Wakefield, West Yorkshire became by mistake a member of a Facebook group for Wakefield, Quebec. And she actually created a bond with the people there and a true friendship was established. That is very sweet and shows you that social media can sometimes be a force for good. I am always happy to read about stories of friendship between my people and the people of my country of adoption. And on a side note, proof that I have been an expat for a long time: I knew of the Wakefield from Yorkshire but had forgotten that we had one in Quebec.

"Neige collante"

Hot cross buns

As Easter is coming and I am preparing it, I had to add the English touch to the traditions in this family. A tradition I have adopted with enthusiasm. I am talking of course of the hot cross buns. I don't know why I like them like that, but I do. So I went to M&S as it is where I think they sell the best ones and bought four packs, two luxury ones and two different. I think we should have enough for Easter morning.

Serendipity no more

I learned some very sad news from the local artisan grocery shop where I go to buy my lose leaf tea: Serendipity Infusions, one of my favourite tea companies in this country, has now gone under. The shop owner was very sad, but not nearly as much as I was. Like I told her: "It is both tragic and worrying when a tea company goes bankrupt in England!" I think this deserves to be a great unknown line, as sad as the circumstances to say it were. And was already unhappy about Jollybrew suddenly going under. Now I must find another tea company to buy quality (qualitea?) brews.

Lundi saint

Palm Sunday

Today we are Palm Sunday, in case you did not notice. Back when I was a little Catholic boy (living in a secular household, mind you), it meant something. Now that I am a Godless heathen, it means less, but it does mark the final countdown until Easter. I need to get things prepared here. How are the preparations on your side?

I want a tank

Well, I mean a toy tank. And it would be for my birthday. I guess someone could think I am going through a midlife crisis, maybe it is the case, I don't know. But as my birthday is coming soon and my wife asked for present suggestions, it struck me that I'd like to have some presents that I could share with Wolfie. I am lucky enough to be able to live through a second childhood thanks to my boy, might as well make the most of it. There is a more selfish reason for this: when I was a kid, my best friend had a toy tank with soldiers and I always envied him. It was nothing fancy: one tank that had one side "open" where you could put small plastic toys. Don't know why I thought this was uber cool. I did not find the exact model on Amazon, but I found this tank which looks pretty neat and it's quite cheap. The soldiers remind me of the ones we used to have as kids. When I told that to my father, he was a bit shocked, thinking it was a tad barbaric and violent, but he grew up playing cowboys and Indians and cops and robbers and what have you, so he can't talk. Beside, I think war games are kind of cathartic. Anyway, Wolfie really likes the green tank because it is his favourite colour and he is curious about the technology (he is everthe engineer). And I like it because nostalgia. So the tank is on the list.

The Ouse Valley Viaduct

I recently mentioned on a blog that I discovered through Windows 10 plenty of new picturesque places I want to visit and discover. One of them is not so exotic and it is fairly close: it is the Ouse Valley Viaduct, which is part of the London-Brighton Railway Line. Back when I was in thatjob that I hated, logging in Windows 10 seeing the Viaduct put me in a better mood for some reason. Maybe it was the majesty of it, maybe it was the idea of a future railway journey. So it is not so much visiting the viaduct that I want to do as going through it on a train. It must be quite an experience and as I love train travels, this is one I really want to do. Asmy wife has always wanted to go to Brighton, this actually may be one ofthe first trips we do once the pandemic is over. So I might get my wish.

Question existentielle (368)

Attic and Books

A friend of mine sent me this meme, with a quote from Ann Landers. I never heard of her before and I have no idea where my friend found this image, but of course I can relate to it a lot. Although, in my case, I do not clean my attic: I clutter it with books I can't put on my bookshelves. But I'd love to have an attic big enough to turn it into a reading space.

WFH Anniversary

Yesterday was the one year anniversary of working from home due to the pandemic's lockdown. Or, as I called it then, guerilla working. Or rather, as we now abbreviate it the jargon of our new reality, WFH. Either either, I quickly came to enjoy it. First because I was away from an office I disliked in a job I disliked with bosses and colleagues I disliked (this post). Then, because I changed to a new job with a better employer, colleagues, better everything, in a company that understands the new reality and is thus much more flexible. I don't know until when I will work from home, but to my surprise I will miss it when I have to commute again.

Maybe I'm a sucker, but I really love, when you log into a computer with Windows 10 on, they show you picturesque images from around the world. Sometimes from very far away, somewhere from not so far. Either way, it makes me want to travel. Since we can't for the time being, I thought I share some of these virtual discoveries here. Some might become holiday destinations, who knows. Anyway, I recently found out that there is a village called Oberägi in Switzerland. I  have been to Switzerland once, twenty years ago, and it was a very stay It looked very beautiful, but it was in a very quiet time of year (not sure if this was a good or a bad thing) and not in the best circumstances. Going back there with my wife and kid would be great, especially in a village such as Oberägi. I don't think I would mind if it was going to be quiet. Anyway, has any of my readers been there? How is it? What would be the ideal time to visit (in a "normal" year)? Where in Switzerland would you recommend a visit?

The Ultimate Construction Site Book

Sometimes, my wife spoils our Wolfie for no reason at all. So recently, we received a package and in the package there was various things, including this: The Ultimate Construction Site Book, about construction vehicles and tools. It has opening flaps and it is what we can call an interactive book. Wolfie loves it. I must say, I quite like it too. The only thing that irks me slightly is that judging by the names of the author and the illustrator, this book was translated from French. I wish we had the original one, it would make it easier to teach my son French sometimes.

Retrouver Jean Sans Peur

Railway board games

Time is not ideal for it, given that we cannot invite people here as long as the lockdown is on in one way or another, but I have decided to enjoy board games again, as soon as possible, as I used to when I was a kid. Old ones and also new ones, or some that I have not tried yet. As I love railway joureys (something else I have been missing for a while now), I thought I should try to get my hand on Ticket to Ride. I understand there are many editions, maybe I should ask for one of them for my birthday? Either that or another board game based on railways. If you have any suggestions, please let me know in the comment section.

I did not forget the spring equinox

Well, it was the spring or vernal equinox today and I did not forget about it, but hesitated to blog about it for one simple reason: like I said in 2017, I don't like the season all that much anymore, in fact I kind of dread the longer days. Okay, so we have a bit of time until summer arrives, but all the same, I am not really enthusiastic or impatient as so many people are this time of year. I kind of like when night falls early. But hey, I did know it was the vernal equinox. Am I the only one feeling like this about it?

Leprechaun

I cannot believe I missed that one on Saint Paddy's Day, but Monstrum made a documentary about leprechauns. Better late than never and, since I am obsessed about everything folkloric and lov everything Irish, I have decided to share this video which I really enjoyed:

Frik

A crime to look forward to

There's something to be excited about this year which I haven't blogged about yet: South African crime writer Deon Meyer should have a new novel published in English, Donkerdrif in its original title. It will feature the return of sober alcoholic Benny Griessel, his colleague Vaugh Cupido, some wine estate (the Donkerdrif of the title) and it all sounds very promising. I can barely wait.

Interpol and me(!)

Sometimes people have memories of the strangest andmost trivial things. A friend of mine (well, not a very close friend, just an acquaintance really from back when I was a teenager) commented on one of my Facebook posts yesterday, where I was plugging this real crime book that Interpol had not caught him yet. He then asked if I remembered. I said vaguely and he told me that back in the days, I joked that Interpol was on his case. Apparently, he still finds it funny. I do remember saying this, but I don't remember much if any of the context. So a few random observations: 1)I must have been drunk, 2)my obsession with police and crime news is not new, 3)it shows how socially inept I have always been. I mean come on, a joke about Interpol! 4) Be thatas it may, I should have taken notes then, because I'm sure there's agood story to invent with Interpol involved somehow.

St Paddy's Day

Well, it is that day int he year again and I must start this post by a word: happy Saint-Patrick's Day everyone, to all my readers but especially my Irish readers (if there are any). Today I will drink Guinness, even though it is a weekday (I generally don't drink alcohol on a working day, it shows how much of a special occasion this is) and I will listen to a lot of Irish music. I might share some here. No visit at the pub, for obvious reasons (and we do not have a local Irish pub anymore anyway, sadly). I don't pretend to be Irish and I am not a Plastic Paddy, but I do know that some of my ancestors were Ulster Scots and my wife has some Irish blood, so I do have some connection to Ireland. I would like to think it makes my enjoyment of that celebration at least somewhat legit.

"Not you, Medea"

It is a shame that I missed it for Mother's Day, but wanted to share it here. You may remember that back in 2014 I went to see the National Theatre's production of Medea, by Euripides. One of my best theatre experience. And on Mother's Day, their Facebook page released this picture. I thought it was hilarious. It is a rather dark joke if you know the myth, but I really laughed a lot.

Why You Should Beware the Ides of March

Well, today is the Ides of March, the day of the assassination of Julius Caesar. I alwayscommemorate it on this blog and this is no exception. We should all beware the Ides of March and here's why:

Black Velvet

So it is Saint Paddy's Day very soon, so I bought some Guinness for the 17th. But in the meantime, I thought I would try something new, at least new to me, and see if I liked it. I don't know if you have ever heard of the Black Velvet. It is a cocktail made of campagne (or another fizzy wine) and Guinness. A very improbable mix, come to think of it. But I have been curious about ot since I have known of its existence, so I bought some Prosecco and yesterday mixed it with a Guinness. I am not sure if I had the right proportions, so I did a 50/50 ratio. It does taste unusual, like a sparkling Guinness, if that makes sense. But it does taste nice. That said, for Saint Paddy's, I will stick to the iconic stout.

A cake for Mother's Day

It is Mother's Day today in the UK, which always represents a challenge for me. For years, all I had to remember is to send an email to or call my mum, now I have to make it a special day for my wife AND make it entertaining for Wolfie too. In the end, it's all about the children when you have them, until they grow up. So I went to M&S and bought my wife a few treats, including this Percy Pig cake. Because she loves the colour pink and she loves Percy Pig stuff. I thought it was kind of fitting. Wolfie did not seem to trust this cake, he never does when it is a dessert he did not choose, but I reckon he'll change his mind when he tastes it. Anyway, at least my wife will have one day in the year not completely dominated by tractors, trains and trucks.

Arc-en-ciel

Sea and river folklore

I found this picture on the Facebook page of the Wallingford Bookshop, maybe my favourite independent bookshop in England. It is advertising Treasury of Folklore: Seas&Rivers, which I now really, really want to get my hands on. I already bought (in the Wallingford Bookshop, incidentally, like many other books of folklore I have) A Treasury of British Folklore, in the same collection. I really enjoyed it and it would just make sense to have this one as well. I mean, how can you resist such cover?

The Royal Navy's cool fork/spoon/knife

Back in May 2019, we went to a special day, an "emergency service family day" out where there were stands from the police, the firemen service and so on, with fire trucks, police cars and what have you. Wolfie really enjoyed it and I must say so did I. They were giving lots of freebies, including thisutencil from the Royal Navy: a plastic fork, knife and spoon all into one. I don't know if it was just something made for such special event, or if it is part of the gadgetry the Royal Navy truly has. Be that as it may, it is uber cool, both practical and sleek looking and my son and I use it for our meals sometimes. I never thought I would say I have a favourite spoon, fork or knife, but here it is.

Of caviar and salted peanuts

I did not have time to blog about it, but two days ago was the birthday of Mickey Spillane. And I found on social media this delicious (forgive the pun) quote from him, which explains in a nutshell why I always come back to crime fiction. You probably heard of it too. Here it is: "Those big-shot writers could never dig the fact that there are more salted peanuts consumed than caviar". I don't know for you, but I can relate. Fittingly enough, two days ago, I was blogging about peanut butters. Anyway, I only read one book of Spillane so far, but I intend to read more.

Chevreuil

Hereditary arachnophibia

Little piece of family drama yesterday: I heard both my wife and Wolfie scream. There was a spider in the kitchen. Sadly I could not catch the spider, which was not very big according to my wife, as it had gone under the fridge, not to be seen again. Wolfie was shaking afterwards, we had to call his daddad to calm him down. It appears that his mother gave him a fear of spider. Thankfully, I am not arachnophobic myself, thanks to a certain aesthetic appreciation of their appearance and their work (some of them anyway). But that means I'm now the official family's spider hunter.

I need to prepare my souliers." J'ai trouvé ça bien mignon.

ManiLife peanut butter

Since I have been all out of Kraft peanut butter for some time, I try to find the best possible peanut butter here as this is the main part of my diet for breakfast and often for lunch as well, especially since I have started working from home. My wife does not understand this love of peanut butter, which is shared by Wolfie, and how we can get through jars of the thing so quickly. I explained to her that it is a family thing: "With any luck, this will get him through uni life, just like it did to me and my mother and he will never know hunger". This deserves to be a new great unknown line, by the way, but I digress. Anyway, last weekend I bought in one of the local food shop one of the best peanut butters I found in this country: Manilife's original roast smooth peanut butter. Like many posh peanut butters, you need to stir it with a spoon before spreading it. But it is worth it and absolutely delicious. It is thick, creamy, filling, in sum everything it says on the jar. It is not cheap, nevertheless it was worth the investment for quality breakfasts and lunches.

A torch as a birthday present?

My birthday is coming next month and, as I have sarted preparing it, among other things giving my wife a few present suggestions. Not that I am hard to please: nothing is easier than buy gifts for me, I am a man of many interests and ideas. But she asked me anyway, so I gave a few suggestions among them a... flashlight. Or, as we call it in the UK, a torch. Why did I think of that? I am not sure. Mainly because it is quite a practical tool to have. My parents-in-law bought me a torch as a birthday present back in 2008 and I used to really like it (I even blogged about it) and I used it a lot, until it went kaput. Then I remember old black torches that my grandparents and parents had when I was a kid. I used to love them too, because they looked good and I liked to lay with them. I guess I just thought it could come in handy to have a good quality torch like these old ones.

The blanket fort

For the last few days, weeks even, Wolfie has been obsessing about making a fort with his bed and blankets. An age old tradition that even has its Wikipedia entry. It is not always easy and he often needs help from his mum and daddy (although he complains a lot about me, "daddy made it all wrong" is a recurring line of grievance). But it's great fun and it keeps him entertained.

Ancient board games

I found this picture on the Facebook page of the British Museum. It is part of this blog post, to be precise. It represents a lion and a gazelle playing maybe the most ancient board games in the world, senet. I found this article fascinating, because it shows how much playing has been suchan important part of civilised life, and also because it reminds me how much I have been missing playing board  games. In fact, after the pandemic, it is something I have been promising myself to do again: discover and rediscover board games, old and new. In the meantime, I intend to blog abot them more regularly, as a recurring topic.

No monster in the woods

At the preschool of my son, they sometimes go to "forest school", which is a special day when they go in a nearby piece of woodlands do special activities and look at nature. My son loves it and is always enthusiastic when it is a forest school day. Last week when he went, one of his classmates said that theremight be some monsters in the woods. Wolfie said, asservatively: "No, there is no monster in the woods, monsters are just pretend". I was quite proud of this new Wolfism. It means that even though he has a wild imagination, Wolfie is not superstitious. At his age, I did not think there were monsters in the woods, but I was not so sure about it.

World Book Day

Here is a quick reminder for those who did not know (I tend to forget myself): today is the first Thursday of March, so it is World Book Day. To celebrate, please read a book or more, alone or with loved ones. For more specific suggestions, please read this blog post from Penguin Publishing, where I took this image. And if, like me, you have been struggling to read as regularly as you used to, this article might help. In any case, happy World Book Day to all my readers.

The office chair

Okay, so at some time this month, on the 23rd to be precise, it will be the first year anniversary of me working from home. First in the old job I hated, then in my new job which I quite like (better at every level: the job itself, the company, the colleagues). Not counting a few weeks whee I have been first furloughed, then unemployed, it means that I spent a year, more or less, guerilla working. And I love it, except for one thing: as I thought my situation would be temporary, I did not change my office chair yet. I am still using an old garden chair that is wearing off. As my contract has been extended (yay!) for a few months and I will need to invest in a better chair. if you have any suggestions, please tell me in the comments. Something comfy but not too expensive.

Feeling like Figaro

Two days ago, we finally gave a haircut to Wolfie, the first in a year, since the first lockdown. It was long overdue. Before last Sunday, he always had haircuts from professional hairdressers and convincing him to get through the whole process was quite an ordeal. Now, it was his dad. Better still: even though he had refused to receive a haircut since lockdown, he wanted and asked for it. I guess he was fed up of looking like a hippie and having to move the hair from his face. Surprisingly, I did a pretty good job of it. it made me feel like Figaro, from The Barber of Seville, by Rossini. In any case, I had this very aria in mind the whole time, which I never managed to master when I studied classical singing:

The Welsh Flag and me

Today is the first of March and it is also the Feast of Saint David, also the patron saint of Wales. It is therefore Wales' National Day. I took this picture while visiting Cardiff Castle. That was back in 2017. I have a bit of history with Wales and the Welsh people, which dates back to my first year at uni and I have detailed in this post. That same year, I asked one of my Welsh friends to buy a Welsh flag for me next time she went home, because I thought it looked really cool with the dragon on it (you don't see it so well on this pic) and its call back to the Arthurian legend. Back then, it was not something I would have done over the internet. Anyway, she bought it and the flag is still in my parents' place somewhere. I wonder if dad takes it out to fly it. I guess the neighbours would think it weird, but among all the flags of the world, I think the Welsh one might be the coolest. And today, I wish I could fly it here, even though I am not Welsh.
