My end of June

So let's get the commonplace out of the way: today is the last day of June. One month of summer is done and dealt with. I must say, it hasn't been too bad, weather-wise. We had a few hot days, but most of them were not unbearable. Better still: during the last week or so, it has been much cooler outside, feeling more like the end of summer than the beginning. Of course, I felt cool for another reason: I got a proper man flu, which always makes me shiver. But I will make a confession here, which might shock some: if I have to be sick, especially of a cold I'd rather be sick during summertime. It's the lesser evil, so to speak. So anyway, that was my month of June. And how was yours?

The In-Law's Autumn Mug

Last time we visited Wolfie's maternal grandparents, a couple of weeks ago, my wife received her coffee in this mug. I loathe coffee, but I want this mug. I find it so perfectly autumnal. Or is it just me? I don't want to nick it (and anyway I have autumn mugs here too), but I do hope I am offered a drink in this mug next time I'm there. Talking of autmn, the wait has been a bit more bearable these days due to a much cooler weather.

Pandy the panda

As I mentioned yesterday, we received a big IKEA order. Lots of useful things and... this panda for Wolfie. He quickly named him Pandy, or Pandy Pandy, or Pandy Pand, or Pandy the panda. The name varies from time to time, but there's always Pandy in it. It cost £3.50, a bargain. Why a panda, do you ask? Because Wolfie has been asking us for a panda for months now. I have no idea how he gotthis idea from, but he finds them very cute and thus, has been asking for a plush panda. So now he has one for his ever growing menagerie.

Malades

IKEA Time

Because my wife is working again and working from home, we have decided to finally turn this house into a proper working environment. So she bought office furniture and other commodities at IKEA. Why not before? My fault entirely: I accomodated myself with guerilla working a bit too much. But now that we both work, we need a more suitable environment. So we received yesterday a lot of stuff from IKEA, which is now taking space in the living room. The delivery man told us it was the right time to buy: apparently prices are now reduced and they should go up come September. We started to build up one part of a desk, but got it wrong, so we will have to start again. I knew doing DIY was a pain, but the instructions for the stuff we have, they are properly sadistic. Rome wasn't built in one day and this applies to IKEA.

Muscadet-sèvre-et-maine

The Mediterranean Look

Something strange, or at least unusual, happened with the hot weather we've had recently. I got a tan. It is my mother who noticed it. Now you will say there is nothing unusual about it,but I shun the sun and I tend to be fairly pale usually, even during summertime. I haven't had a proper tan in years. I guess I must have gone out more often. It gives me a somewhat Mediterranean look, like an Italian or a Greek. Back when I was younger, during my first years in the UK, I was sometimes mistaken for a Greek or an Italian during summertime. Partially because most of my friends here were either one or the other nationality, partially because of the tan.

The wild trees in our garden

My mother-in-law noticed something from one of the pictures we sent her recently: the plants growing by the garden shed are actually trees. We thought they were weeds. But no, they are the offspring of the big towering tree that stand by the parking lot at the back. I love that tree but I had to cut the offspring. I guess I will have to find a way to take off the roots, otherwise it will damage the shed and the fence. It is going to be fun: I'm ill equipped and I'm a lousy gardiner. But let's look at the bright side: it means trees can grow in our garden. I might one day plant some I like.

Enfin bref, je me suis bien entendu présenté.

A bookshop to visit in Derbyshire

The things I learn thanks to Independent Bookshop Week, which is ending today (which reminds me, I must visit our local one). So anyway, I found out on social media that there is a bookshop in Buxton, Derbyshire that looks like a freaking tower. Scrivener's Books and it sells secondhand books. And look at how stylish it is. I have never been to Buxton, but we have friends in Derbyshire, so maybe we could find a way to go there. I know, I know, it i a bit far, but visiting it must be quite an experience. And I can only imagine the many treasures I could find in there.

A Gathering of Expats in London on the 25th

So today, as you know if you have been reading this blog, is today is Saint John the Baptist's Day, AKA Quebec's National Day. You might also remember that in 2019 I discovered the Twitter account of the Quebec Government Office in London. Well, they are organising a special fête tomorrow for the St Jean and to ceebrate the 60th anniversary of the Delegation. I would love to go with the family, especially since Wolfie has been wanting to go to London, but sadly we have other commitments. Back in 2019, I had promised myself to go there one day to celebrate among other expats. I guess it might be for next year, if they organise anything.

My people in Any Old Iron

I have been rereading Any Old Iron, epic novel by my favourite writer Anthony Burgess. Today is also Saint Jean-Baptiste Day, which is Quebecker's National Day, or Fête nationale. So anyway, happy coincidence, this is what I read in the novel a few days ago: "The pub was crowded with Free French and Québecois and a  few Yanks as well as scrimshanking civilians (...)". So yes, I thought it was kinda cool. I know Anthony Burgess had affection and genuine respect for my people, which I might blog about one day. I will however comment on two slight mistakes Burgess made in this line: 1)Québécois has an accent on the second e, 2)it was not a very used term back in the 1930s/1940s where the scene takes place, thus the narrator is being rather anachronistic. Actually, I'm not even sure the term existed back then. Be that as it may, it's just nice to have us being mentioned and it is fitting that I blog this (re)discovery today.

"Yellow warning of thunderstorms" (yay!)

After the hot weather we have been having these last two weeks (and a few days of heatwave), I read today on BBC Weather that there was a "yellow warning of thunderstorms" in our area for today. If there is a storm (or more, if we are lucky), it would be the very first of the summer. I hope so. I love storms, for one, in fact thunderstorms are for me the highlight of summertime. And they would considerably lower the temperature and make it far more comfortable. All right, all right, I don't want to put my hopes up, it is only a yellow warning.

Ninja Warrior Swords

Our family went to a birthday party last Sunday. One of many, that's the good thing about being a parent: your life becomes a succession of children birthday parties. Anyway, there was a sort of clown or entertainer there who was blowing balloons into animals and objects, and he made for Wolfie and others a sword. So Wolfie got suddenly obsessed about swords. When the party was over, we went downtown and in the local toy shop, as I has promised him to go to. He spotted all sorts of toy swords and wanted them all. I did not buy any, but I intend to buy him one for his own birthday. There is one in particular that caught my attention: these ninja swords. Back when I was growing up in the 80s, martial art and ninjas were all the craze and we had many make belief games when we played ninjas. It might be fun to teach Wolfie about it. And these swords look so darn cool! Even if they are not accurate. In any case, at £3.99, they are a bargain.

"Summer Lovers Be Like..."

Today is the summers solstice, the longest day of the year Which I always take as both a blessing and a curse: it is a high point in the season, but it means that it is the beginning of the end for it. Sitll, we just got out of a heatwave and there is another one building up. So me not happy. But to cheer me up, or at least make me smile, I found this hilarious meme online. I think it sums up perfectly how absurd I find summer lovers sometimes.

Monstrum of Grays and UFOs

For the amateur of modern folklore among you, Monstrum released a video recently about UFOs and Grey aliens, also called Grays. As always, it is fascinating. I have never been as much into aliens as other "paranormal" phenomenons, even as a child, but this is great fun all the same. I love their animated dramatisations of accounts of alien encounters. It's worth a watch just for them.

Independent Bookshop Week

Quick bit of news for those among you who don't know already: this week in the UK (and maybe elsewhere, for all I know) is Independent Bookshop Week. It started last Saturday and it is ending on Saturday the 25th of June. Now I promised my wife I would behave, as we have a lot of books already and many books on my to-read list. But I should take time at some point to go to our local bookshop and buy a little something, if only to encourage a local business.

Father's Day

It is Father's Day today. Not much to say about it, ironically, except that I will wish happy birthday to my father, Wolfie's garnd-papa. And to my father-in-law too. We will go to a birthday party for two of Wolfie's school friends. Come to think of it, it's kind of fitting. It still feels strange sometimes to think of myself as a father, yet I cannot imagine my life without my son. We are not going anywhere after the birthday party, because I think going to a pub or restaurant on a holiday is always a mistake (things are overbooked and often result in poor service and even worse experiences), but I suspect Wolfie and his mummy have something prepared for me.

Hedgehogs Crossing

I knew about hedgehogs highways, but I found a new way the Brits show how much they love their wildlife: a hedgehogs crossing sign! We found this a few days ago while walking in a nearby town. I thought it was a great idea. Of course I had to take a picture for the blog. It may sound merely quirky or silly, but it is also a way to increase awareness regarding road safety for these cute little animals. As you can probably tell, I love hedgehogs.

The bookshelves under the stairs

I found this on the internet. I know it is silly, I know it is photoshopped, but right now we are looking to buy and assemble storage spaces, particularly for books (mine and Wolfie's) and I look at it and think it would be an interesting solution, if it existed. Give a double function to our stairway and it would also look oh so cool. And it would optimize the space. Anybody has seen anything resembling this in real life?

Welsh Cakes

For some reason, our son Wolfie is very fond of Welsh cakes. It is like is favourite go-to snack. We often buy them for him, but his maternal grandmother (grandma for sorts) bake them herself last weekend. So we had them fresh from the pan. And having Welsh cakes fresh from the pan, still warm, is just the best thing ever. I went through them like they were getting out of fashion. Frankly, it was embarrassing. I hadn't had lunch, so this might explain why, but it was nevertheless embarrassing. But seriously, they are the best thing ever for an afternoon snack.

The Milk Run

Yesterday during the morning school run, the roads were jam packed due to road work. It was horrible, we had to take back routes to get there on time and even they were busy. It took ages to finally arrive to school. But the run was not without its interesting moments. At some point, right ahead of us, there was a milk truck, or a milk tank, whatever you call it. I mean a truck with a tank full of milk. I think it is the very first time I have seen one of them. Some milk was even dripping from the tank. I took a quick picture. Literally, it turned Wolfie's school run into a milk run.

The hare is back

You may remember that my parents have a hare that visit them sometimes. We are not sure if it is the same one, but since 2020 there is one or many hares that have shown up in their garden and their neighbours' gardens sometimes. Well, the hare came back a few days ago and my dad took a few pictures.

Ukrainian Sighting?

Last Friday, when we were doing to school run, my wife and I may have sighted for the first time Ukrainian refugees. We are not sure, but my gut feeling was that it was indeed the case. So we were walking to pick up Wolfie from school when we crossed a mother and what I assumed were her two daughters. They were all blonde and the girls were of school age, one must have been ten, the other a bit younger, but were not wearing school uniforms. They were speaking a foreign language that sounded Eastern European. It struck me of how similar they looked, yet so different in a way. It is difficult to explain why. I smiled, but did not say a word. Maybe I should have said hi or good afternoon or something. I think I should maybe have been more welcoming. But maybe they didn't want to be bothered. Anyway, not sure what to think of it, but it felt surreal.

Accursed Heat

So far we've had a fairly strange but tolerable summer: it gets in the lower 20s, maximum and the nights and evenings remain fairly cool. Every time this happens, I keep repreating the foolish hopeful's mantra: so far so good, so far, so good... Until it crashes and burns, literally. Case in point: this coming week they are forecasting a heatwave. The first of the season. I am dreading it. When I speak about it, people don't understand that I don't like summer and the sun. Is it so weird that I don't like having my skin covered with squishy, sticky sun lotion, to the point where I look like I'm covered in margarine? Or that I don't like sweating? Or going thirsty? Or to have headache due to the heat? Or being unable to sleep? Or focus? So anyway, I'm really dreading this coming week.

Danger Zone

Yesterday, there was a fête at Wolfie's school, where we were volunteering. Wolfie was reluctant to go at first, but he changed his mind when he saw the bouncy play there. It was called "Danger Zone" and basically a bouncy obstacle course, when you go through tunnels, hills and other things. The children were frantic and I got a bit worried that he might get hurt, but things went well and he really enjoyed it. I must say, I envied my son, as it seemed really fun. And what a cool, badass name as well.

Woodlands and Forests Folklore

The treasures you find in the local bookshop, sometimes literally. When I went a few months ago, I bought Treasury of Folklore: Woodlands and Forests. It says on the cover that it has Wild Gods, World Trees and Werewolves. And the cover features Little Red Riding Hood and the Big Bad Wolf. This cover would have been enough to convince meto buy it, because I am ascinated by the tale so much. I already have two books from the collection, the sea one (present from my wife, which I am reading at the moment) and the Treasury of British Folklore (read it, loved it). But since woodlands are forests are my favourite setting for fairy tales and legends, I want to read this one even more than the other two.

Book Donations

At Wolfie's school recently, they made a special activity: a Book Donations day, to give away books we don't want anymore. My wife took it with a sight of relief: at last she could decluster this house a bit, as it is filled with books. I, on the other hand, don't like or want to give away any of my books, even the bad ones. I always feel a loss. But it makes sense. I guess I have to learn not to be selfish. It had of course to be children books, which is even better, as Wolfie has inherited of many, many books from friends, friends of friends and family. In fact, we have more books than he cares to read and we have sometimes more than one copy of the same book. So Wolfie had to choose which one he was happy to give away. He chose... one.

Two for joy...

Okay, so this is not the greatest picture, but a few days ago, I saw these two magpies outside and I took this snapshot through the window. Two for joy, just like the nursery rhyme.Magpies are a common sight in this country, but I never get bored or watching them. They look so elegant with their black, white and blue feathers.

Growing Pumpkins (updates)

You may remember that last month I planted pumpkin seeds in the garden, hoping to have my own pumpkins for Halloween. I read a bit about it, watched a few videos on YouTube, did the ebst I could and planted them. As I am well aware that I am a poor gardener on even the best day, I was very skeptical about the possibility of even making one of the seeds germinate. Well, it turned out I might be better than I thought, or it is beginner's luck, because I saw this growing from the soil no later than yesterday. And there are others too, but this one is the most developed. So I'm very happy and very excited. I can even say that I am carefully optimistic.

There's a Museum of Literature

The things you learn sometimes at random, just by wasting a few minutes on social media. I discovered something exactly like this yesterday: there is a Museum of Literature in Ireland. I don't know if there are any other in the world, but there is one in Ireland and I don't know why but that makes perfect sense. And in Dublin as well, a city I visited once in my life and which I have been wanting to revisit since then. Now I have yet another reason to visit Ireland. We are planning holidays, but it will not be there this year (among other reasons because it is too chaotic a the airport), but Ireland is on my bucket list. This Museum too.

Jubilee Cake

Yesterday, we went to one of those "street parties" that the English are quite fond of when there is something to celebrate. It was of course to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee. There were Jubilee pizzas, Jubilee nachos, with Jubilee salsa, Jubilee guacamole, Jubilee sausages, Jubilee other things and a proper Jubilee Cake, baked by one of the neighbours, not bought or anything. Only the topping as purchased. She was quite proud of making it. I managed to get this picture before more got eaten. At least you can see the inside. It tasted quite nice, I must say. Even though I'm a republican, I can appreciate British bakery. And in spite of my misanthropy, I can enjoy a little fête among neighbours.

The Shark of East Hampton, NY

We went on a day out a few days ago and parked in a public parking next to a truck. I think it was a Range Rover, I might be wrong. On this vehicle there were two stickers, including this one, which caught my attention. The car was British, but obviously they have been to East Hampton in the state of New York. I have never been to East Hampton or heard about East Hampton before. Of course what caught my attention was the shark. Apparently there's been shark sighting there in the recent past. I am not sure why, but I find all this fascinating: now I know of a place in the US I have never heard of or noticed before and I also a bit of local news. All this because we parked next to a car that had this.

Cub Coffee

When we went to that pub in the park event two weeks or so ago, my wife got curious about a stand, belonging to Cub Coffee. It is a vegan coffee company. My wife loves ethical businesses, especially vegan ones (while not vegan herself, she is vegetarian) and she loves coffee, so I bought her a "Pink Power Latte" (she loves pink stuff too). I did not buy a cuppa tea from them, maybe I should have had. I hate coffee, but I just find their sign cool, with the bear holding a mug. My wife was not really impressed with the latte, but I think sometimes it is okay to buy something for ethical reasons.

The Lawn, the Queen, the Jubilee

I blogged yesterday about No Mow May. My wife Veggie Carrie picked up on it, so we had this conversation last night, which I am sharing it here for posterity

My wife: "Now that No Mow May is over, maybe you should mow the front lawn?
Me: "The grass isn't that long."
My wife: "Yes but it would be nice for the Jubilee."
Me: "So what? The Queen is not going to show up here for a visit!"

I think this deserves to be a new great unknown line (seems to be making a lot of them these days). In any case, I will wait a bit until I mow the front lawn.

Calembour royalement atroce

The Jubilee Cat (and an invitation)

We received this through the door a few days ago. It is an invitation to a local Jubilee Party on the 5th of June. It is not signed. There are parties like this all around England and the UK of course. I don't know who gave us this card, but I suspect she (I think it's a she, this is a woman's handwriting) knows we are cat lovers. Or maybe she's just an old lady. Old ladies sent such cards, with cats on them. We don't know yet if we will attend. I am not a monarchist, for one, so I find the current display of patriotism a little bit much. And, while I get along with a few neighbours, there are one or two I can't stand. Still, it's a cool cat. A Jubilee Cat, if you will.

No Mow May

I have only learned about it on the last day of May, but I thought I needed to mention it here: last month was No Mow May.  If you do No Mow May, you should not mow the lawn for the whole month, so the bees (other insects too, but especially the bees) can pollinate the wild flowers that will bloom. You can read about it in this article in The Guardian. Well, I now feel less guilty for not mowing the back garden for the whole month. Although I did mow the front one, as my wife insisted. Well, this will not happen again for May. I now know that I must be eco-friendly and help the bees. All these years, I was fighting the good fight and I didn't even know it.

The Magic Flute Book

I had promised myself to behave last time I went to the local bookshop, but then I found something I had to buy for me, herr, I mean, for Wolfie. I found this book, which is a retelling of f Die Zauberflöte by Mozart. The Magic Flute. It is one of these books where you press a button and you hear a bit of music. Now it is a beautiful book, it has absolutely lovely illustrations, however I think it made serious and questionable changes to the story. I am not talking merely of cuts here: entire plot points are entirely rewritten and overall it is very different from the original libretto. Only the characters are the same, somewhat. And well, there is the music too, the lovely music. On the plus side, Wolfie has been enjoying it fairly well, at least he's been asking a lot of questions when I read it to him. So it was a good purchase. Anyway, to end this post, I have to share a bit of the score. I have decided to go for the quintet of the first act. It is literally one moral preaching and a lot of exposition, yet Mozart turns it into a charming piece.
