Giant Snakes and Ladders

Today we went to a little fête for charity nearby. There were some games for children, including this giant version of Snakes and Ladders. It is pretty much the same as the normal board game, except on a large scale and with some squares having extra variables (move an extra space, double roll of the dice next time, etc.). Nobody was playing, so Wolfie had some fun running around the board and throwing the dice. My brothers and I used to play Snakes and Ladders a while ago, it was one of the first board games we ever played I think. It gets old quickly, like all games based on pure luck, but I always loved its imagery, with menacing hissing snakes. Some Snakes and Ladders boards can look almost scary. I think the enjoyment of the game comes from the board itself, not the simplistic gameplay. When Wolfie is old enough, I think I will find one good set of Snakes and Ladders.

Karribean Kola

Sometimes I buy things out of cheer curiosity, because I'm in an exotic mood or I want to make trivial discoveries from trivial experiences, or whatever. So last week, I found in one of the corner shops a soft drink called Karribean Kola, by a company called KA Drinks. Apparently their drinks are based on traditional Jamaican recipes. But what caught my attention was the cool blue colour, the weird spelling and the relatively low sugar content (for a soft drink). I thought it could go for a cheap Coca Cola substitute for the hot days of summer. After trying it, I'm not sure if I like it or not. It's very sweet and they went really heavy on the vanille flavour. It tastes more like a cream Soda than a cola. Still, it has a cool and exotic name.

Fermont

Ça l'a donc vraiment fasciné.

Sugar, Sugar

I have a confession to make: I know nothing of The Archies but their song Sugar, Sugar. Which I never considered to be a good song. That said, I find it catchy and I do enjoy it from time to time, especially on a hot summer day like it is today. Don't ask me why. Maybe because of that scene from The Simpsons. Maybe because it is so terribly silly and thus easy to listen. So here it is anyway. Promise, next time the music I share on this blog will be better.

Fire Catcher

If you are looking for a poison for the Summer and if, like me, you find blonde beers lacking flavours, I have a suggestion for you: Fire Catcher by Wychwood Brewery. Yup, them again. Of all the brewery's products, it is one of the most difficult to find (from my experience anyway), but it is a proper summertime beer. Darkish for a blonde, light in alcohol, with some citrus aroma, it is most definitely a summertime beer. Not the best from Wychwood Brewery, but not insipid enough to feel ashamed of drinking it. Fire Catcher may be blonde, but it is a dirty blonde and perfect to drink on a hot summer day.

Halloween looming

I told you very recently how spooky I find Sarah' Scribbles. By this I mean that she seems to read my mind when she draws a comic strip. Well, it happened again with this brand new strip. The first week of summer is almost over. And what do I think about? You guessed it. And she did too. I knew she was as Halloween obsessed as I am, but this is uncanny. On the more positive side, reading her, I feel almost like a normal human being.

The new hotel by the train station

I took this picture at the National Railway Museum in York, I am sharing it today because I love sharing pics from my favourite museum in the world and because it kind of goes well with this bit of good news: after years of waiting, we finally have a new hotel by the local train station. The last one dated back from the fifties or sixties and had been demolished a long time ago. The new one is a Travelodge, which means it's bland, but most likely comfy enough and relatively cheap. What it means for us specifically is that my parents and my wife's parents will have the choice of a a cheaper hotel that nevertheless has good standards, literally a walk away from the grandson. We might check it out this weekend.

A police raid from the air?

This afternoon at work, we suddenly heard the sound of a helicopter flying low. We heard it getting closer and closer, then we saw it flying low again and again over the small business park where we are. It looked like a police helicopter, but we could not be certain. It would make sense if it was. To what purpose did it circle ominously above our heads, I have no idea. No siren was heard during or after, it was just this helicopter flying low and buzzing like a clunky metallic mosquito. I have to say, I found the whole thing quite exciting, if its dénouement or lack of was anticlimactic. This is the kind of stuff I read about in crime news. I know that police helicopters can be used for surveillance exercises, but they can also be prominent in major raids, drug busts and anti-terrorist operations, things like that. This is creative material for crime fiction. So I will try to remember this little episode for future use.

Strawberry shortcake

My dad sent me pictures of small strawberry shortcakes he made recently. Here is one of them, very posh in its bowl, even though the dessert itself is kind of messy. I wonder if you can see the cake underneath the strawberries and the whipped cream. You can also see sprinkled maple sugar on it. Strawberry shortcakes is maybe the dessert I associate most with this time of year and is a family tradition. Come to think of it, I also associate the shortcake with strawberries at the exclusion of all other fruits. I wish I could have had one.

First Blast of Summer

We were having a relatively cool summer, until today, when for the first time the temperatures went up to mid their twenties. Not enough to a heatwave, but enough to feel it, especially in the middle of the day. And it was not very sunny. It appears that summer has finally decided to be summery. Well, it would be the case if it had a conscience of course. I am okay with this for now, I don't mind a few hot days. I just don't want it to me like this for weeks. I was pretty happy with what we had so far.

A Gathering of Expats

As you may know, today is Saint John the Baptist's Day, also Quebec's National Day. I have been celebrating it as an expatriate since 2007, pretty much all by myself. Of course, now there is Wolfie, in this household, so I am not really the only Quebecker here, but he is still too young to understand or appreciate. Today, I found at total random that the Quebec government Office in London has a Twitter account and through this account I saw that they had organized a little celebration last Saturday, for expats and non Quebeckers. I should have thought about it before. I mean using social medias to know where and when my fellow expats live and when they gather for the 24th of June. Next year, I will see if our little family can go to some of these parties to celebrate our people. Wolfie will then be old enough to understand a bit more and more importantly to keep some memories of it. Sure, it will not be like the big concerts we have at home, but it could be fun.

"I smell the blood of an Englishman!"

"Fee-fi-fo-fum, I smell the blood of an Englishman!" These famous lines are of course from Jack and the Beanstalk, but this is also the new signal start of all the games of rough and tumble Wolfie and I play. I say the words, I stress the "Englishman" bit and it makes my son giggles with excitement, sometimes he replies with a roar. I take the role of the giant, he takes the one of the giant killer (him being English and all). I will let you guess who the winner always is.

Authentic (?) Taco

When it's hot, I often feel like eating exotic and hot food. It was the case a couple of weeks ago, when we went to a country show. There were different stands offering different cuisines, we went to the Mexican food van and I bought this taco. I don't know how authentic it was, but this was the best taco I ever had. Not the Old El Paso pseudo-Mexican stuff. This was fresh, the tortilla was soft, there was plenty of sauce (sour cream? I cannot remember) and the jalapeno brought all the spice and kick needed. Moral of the story: the best food experiences come in the most unexpected places.

Short Solstice

Today is the summer solstice, the longest day of the year and one I have most ambivalent feelings about. To put it shortly, I don't like long days and the sun going down late in the evening. This year, the long summer days have been bearable, mainly because they have been relatively cool overall and because they have often been cloudy. Read this post for more details. In any case, it means that, to a degree, daylights have been relatively dim, as if we have a shorter solstice, so to speak. Which I cannot complain about.

"How I Tell Stories" (in a nutshell)

As you may know if you have read this blog, I love the comics Sarah's Scribbles, not merely because it is funny, but because it tells the truth. And, on a more personal level, it seems to describe my psyche with spooky accuracy. This was the case recently of a few strips Sarah wrote. I have so many I could share, with no comment on, merely showing the strip, and it would say it all. I settled for one, this strip, showing how she (and I) tells a story. The title of this post (and I guess of the strip) could have been titled "but I digress" because this is exactly what I do.

Island for sale at £66K

Bit of news I read yesterday that caught my attention: an island and a house for sale for only £66K, practically peanuts. And there is a lighthouse too. Of course, if it sounds too good to be true, it is because it is in many ways: the estate is kind of... remote. And the house needs a lot of work. All the same, an island on the Irish sea, if I had the income and the talent to refurbish it... Well, sounds idyllic.

#IndieBookshopWeek

I generally don't do hashtags for this blog, but I make an exception. I learned from the Facebook page of our independent bookshop that this week was Independent Bookshop Week. They went for a summery look on this picture. Big mistake, as it does not look summery at all outside. Be that as it may, I think it is important to support your local bookshop, especially if it is an indie one, so please take this opportunity to buy a book or two this week.

Milk with Tea: bleurgh!

We recently went to visit another preschool on an open day. As we arrived late, there was barely anyone, but they offered us tea and coffee with the shorten visit anyway. The staff was very nice, but they were conditioned to mess up tea. I asked for it to be black, no sugar OR milk. And this is what I got. To be polite, I drank it anyway, but this reminded me why I find milk in tea disgusting. It had no flavour, no aroma, nothing. It was mud, as Wolfie would say. Even the colour is bleurgh.

The gnome in the park

I blogged before about this wooden man, I presume a gnome or another faerie or magical type of creature, reading a book in a park near the home of our friends. We went to visit them last weekend and we stopped at the park. I think it had been changed since we last went there, some extra equipment in the playground area, some extra benches too, but I was happy to see that the mysterious gnome made of stomp was still there, still reading his book with his stern face. I strongly suspect that he is the guardian of the park. I also wonder what book he reads. It is probably written in gnomish, so I would not be able to read anyway. But the gnome absolutely fascinates me.

Autumnal cider from Somerset

Ah, to live in an eternal Autumn! Well, it is not possible, but sometimes you can get fairly close, or at least find ways to calm your longing for your favourite season. Or quench your thirst for it. These days, it does not feel much like summer or June, more like an early September. So yesterday, my wife and I drank this Somerset cider from M&S, which I bought a few months ago. On the label, it says that it has "a crisp edge and the fragrance of orchards in Autumn". I cannot say that it went that far, for me any traditional apple cider is autumnal to begin with, but for a moment it did made me feel like I was in my favourite season.

Evil regatta

This weekend, like every once a year, our quiet little town is hosting a regatta along our side of the River Thames. Or, as I call the event, Sodom and Regatta. Because lots and lots of people get drunk, from teenagers to elderly, and sometimes things get nasty. Thankfully, we no longer live near the town centre. I already read on social media that some thieves tried to steal alcohol from some of the local shops. I hope they get caught. Tomorrow is meant to be quieter and generally more family friendly. But I can't help thinking this regatta brings the worst out of people.

Frozen wolf's head

This is a bit of news that got me really excited for some reason: they found the frozen head of an extinct wolf in Siberia. More details about it here. It is about 40,000 years old. An ancient, prehistoric, wolf's head. Practically a monster wolf. How cool is that? I love wolves, real ones, legendary ones, or, in this instance, cousins or ancestors of our modern wolves. So the more we learn about them and their history, the better. And have a look at the head itself, with the shaggy hairs and the sharp teeth. We are not certain yet if it was bigger than our modern wolves, but this truly was a monstrous head. In any case, it's just cool news and will hopefully shed some lights on one of my favourite animals.

Chess

I took this picture in Totnes in Devon during their carnival procession (I think). I am using it because it illustrates tonight's topic, which is the ancient game of chess. I haven't played chess for years" Last time was not even playing "properly": it was against our old computer, on our old laptop, when I was unemployed and bored. But there was a time when I was an avid chess player: first playing mostly against my brother PJ, then against my best friend during childhood. I played chess from the age of eight until early teenage, then stopped. I have never been a good player: too impatient, unable to think ahead much, etc. I did play in a tournament in secondary school when I managed to beat two adversaries before being eliminated, but otherwise, I was not exactly Gary Kasparov. I think what I liked most about chess is the aesthetic of it: the black and white chess board and armies, the look of the pieces, etc. It is soberly elegant. So yes, I would like to play it again one day. Oh and on a side note, anybody knows who was Miss Torbay in 2014 and if she was meant to be the white queen?).

Calypso Crimes

I love crime fiction at any time of the year, this is the genre I read the most, but maybe I read it even more from say May until August. While it is not exclusively my kind of summer genre, like many people, I make it my favored summertime read. Thus, I recently read Calypso by Ed McBain. It is of course part of the 87th Precinct series. I thought that, since it was at least partially about calypso singing, it would be fitting with hot summer days... It turned out that it is set in September and rains falls heavily on Isola. Fittingly and ironically enough, just like it is rainy here. So I picked up the right book for the time after all. As for the story itself, it is one of the darkest I have read of McBain so far. Without giving too much of the plot a calypso singer gets murdered, then a prostitute, then some more, there is torture, sex and violence of all sorts. I finished the book in shock. I am not sure if it is McBain's best, but it is certainly up there among his most accomplished novels.

Alex & Droogs (?)

There are silly things, sometimes, you wish were true, however ridiculous they seem. You can see here the cover of a comic book adaptation of  A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess. Or, to be precise, an adaptation of the movie. And yes, if you think it looks ridiculous and like the cover of an Archie comics, it is because this is a fake. Or rather, something fan made. Very well made too, it looks like a piece of a vintage, long forgotten adaptation, where the violence has been toned down, but the film's iconic imagery remains. All the same, I wish there has been an Alex & Droogs comics, it have been real horrorshow.

Question existentielle (347)

Skipping summer?

I was expecting this time of year to blog about the summer blues (true phenomenon), but it will not happen just yet. Because today was just as un-summery as a day could be. The yellow warning of rain turned to amber and it poured. I got home soaked. As I am typing this, I am wearing a warm jumper, because the temperature seriously dropped. That said, while I hate being wet, I am not moaning too much. Because I remember the heatwave of last year that seemed to never end. And because darker days mean more relaxing evenings. If one can stay dry, it is quite pleasant, this summer that has not truly started yet. It is certainly comfortable.

Furet albinos

"Yellow warning of rain"

Yes, I know I blogged something very similar last Friday. Anyway, as you are reading this, it might be pouring down on me. I checked the BBC Weather tonight (I am typing this the night before) and from 4:00AM to 23:59, there is a yellow warning issue, which reads as follow:

"There is a chance that heavy prolonged rainfall could lead to local flooding and disruption to transport.
- There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded, causing damage to some buildings
- Where flooding occurs, there is a slight chance of delays or cancellations to train and bus services
- Spray and flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures
- There is a small chance that some communities become cut off by flooded roads"

That might make for an interesting commute, if nothing else. I will be careful, do not worry. But this new warning, three days after the other, just made me think that nowadays, weather forecast bring a bit of drama and excitement into our rather mundane lives.

Et ça, ça me choque presque.

My favourite bookmark, lost and found

There are a lot of things I love and loved about the National Railway Museum of York. It will come as no surprise to my regular readers, as I have a passion for trains and I often blogged about the museum on Vraie Fiction. In fact, any excuse is good to blog about it again, directly or indirectly, and to share another picture I took when we went there. I bought a few things in their souvenirs shop, including this bookmark. It quickly became my favourite bookmark, the one I use for most of the novels I read, especially for the books I read when I traveled by train of course. Maybe it was because I don't use the train as often, but I lost my bookmark for a few months, which actually made me kind of sad. I know how silly this sounds, I mean there is nothing that special about it and it must have cost me something like £2.50 if that. I know it is a trivial object and I can make one for free using a simple piece of paper, but I find this one to be soberly elegant, slick and well, nice. And I bought it in my favourite museum, so I associate it with that time. I found it again recently in one of the novels on my to-read list. I had probably put it there as it was meant to be my next book to read, then had decided to go for some other book, but had not switched bookmarks. Well, anyway, I got it back and I am now very happy.

Hey Mickey!

I have been reading a lot about proms (or summer balls as the Brits call it) recently. I might blog about it more in the coming weeks, but right now let's just say that I got in my head all the silly songs that one would expect at such event, things about dating, coming of age and being still carefree. And listening to abysmally ridiculous but very catchy music. Like Mickey by Toni Basil, which I never even liked when I was a teenager, or when I was child and it became a hit. I watched the original video for the first time a few weeks ago and, while I find the whole thing really dumb (I mean Baisl was nearly 40 when she did it), I can't help but enjoying it a lot. I am not sure why.

Hobgoblin's top contributor

You may know that of all the great beers this country makes, Wychwood Brewery's Hobgoblin is maybe my favourite. Well, I learnedon my Facebook feed that I had become one of Hobgoblin's Facebook pages top contributors. No idea how I ended up deserving that as I do not comment all that much on the page, if at all. I merely put likes and I sometimes (but rarely) share their posts. Something I do for a good number of microbreweries' Facebook pages. Maybe it is just a marketing trick and they gave me the title randomly. Maybe they want to encourage their customers to share more content from the page and I am a complete and utter sucker. Be that as it may, it made my day when I learned about it. It is a long love story between Hobgoblin and I, dating back from my first year at uni, so I cherish this title of top contributor, however undeserving I may be.

Mille Bornes

"Yellow warning of thunderstorms"

I was checking BBC Weather yesterday and this is what I saw. I was both excited (I love thunderstorms) and somewhat wary, as bad weather is more fun when you can stay inside, not when you have to go to work. Any type or warning can bring nasty surprises, especially in this country. Or back to work, as the warning was from 14:00 to 23:00. This is what they announced:

"Heavy thundery showers may cause some travel disruption.
- Some flooding of a few homes and businesses likely, leading to some damage to buildings or structures
- Spray and flooding on roads probably making journey times longer
- Bus and train services probably affected with journey times taking longer
- Some interruption to power supplies and other services likely"

Sounds very dramatic, but so far, so good, touch wood. It rained this morning and I got wet, but not too much. And there was no thunderstorm. I hope we get one soon. And that I am cosy and dry at home when it eventually happens.

Playing "roar" in the garden

Wolfie has developed a liking for our back garden. He didn't use to, but now he loves to play there when the weather is nice (and sometimes even when it is not so nice). His favourite game is playing "roar": basically he says "roar" and runs after us as if he was a wild beast or a monster or something. Then he laughs hysterically. But he does not like if we do "roar". He is the one who must roar. We need to scream in fear and run away. I have to say, it's quite a fun game. Before I became a dad, I had always hoped that if I had a boy, he'd be boisterous and liked to rough and tumble. I am so glad Wolfie is. And that he loves playing "roar".

Is the Loch Ness Monster real?

I blogged a few times before (the last time in March 2015) about my childhood fascination for the Loch Ness Monster. Well, I recently read some news about it, as there are some claims that he might be real after all. Or he might have existed at some point in our human history, in some form or another. The claim is as vague and cryptic as the evidence brought forward, which is apparently based on DNA findings. Two things about this: 1)I am extremely skeptical. It could be another hoax, or simply a botched research done by some self-proclaimed scientists and experts. 2)I still wish I had got such news when I was an impressionable child who believed in Nessie and who would have really enjoyed it.

Wisdom I learned from books

Sometimes, you find things that are abysmally stupid on social media. Some other times, you find lovely, smart and heart warming stuff. Like today, when I stumbled upon a picture from Introvert Doodles. I never heard about it before. But this image is true on all accounts and it shows that one can be witty and yet be profound. It was so good that I had to share "Everything I Need to Know I learned from a Book" tonight. Hope you enjoy as much as I did. And tell me if you agree with this.

Stuffed dogs and quirky Totnes

A few years ago, when we decided to visit Devon and stay in the little town of Totnes, we were told by my sister-in-law's boyfriend that it was a very hippy town. Well, it sure has a lot of that, but what struck me is how quirky Totnes could be sometimes. For instance, there was a homeless man, or a man who used to be homeless, who was selling The Bag Issue (instead of The Big Issue) and had two stuffed dogs with him. I took a picture of him and the stuffed dogs. Here they are, with the little word to state the obvious... I found it hilarious. I have been trying to find more info about the man, no luck yet, but I often wonder if he still in Totnes.

Blessed cloudy evenings

While we recently had plenty of nice weather overall recently, we also had some cloudy days and especially evenings. I actually don't mind cloudy evening in summertime for a simple reason: it is more relaxing this way and makes it less difficult to sleep at night. With clouds come cooler temperature and mitigates the evening falling late. I have a tendency to suffer from insomnia, particularly in summer, so the best kind of summer for me is one with cloudy evenings. If it go on like this until the solstice and beyond, I will be a happy man.

Jarritos

Sometimes, you find something exotic in the most unusual place. We went to a country show, because it had tractors' procession and tractors' displays and our little Wolfie loves tractors. There were lots of stands selling a number of goods, food and drinks, including one selling Mexican cuisine. And a Mexican soda I had never heard about, Jarritos. I bought the lime flavored one, because... well, because it was the only flavor left and I was thirsty. It was good, nothing outstanding in itself, I mean it tasted of lime soda, but on a hot day it made me feel miles and miles away from where I was, in the Mexican desert or something. And I just loved the bottle. Sometimes I judge a drink by its bottle, or at least, I buy the drink because of it.

22 Degree Celsius

It is the first of June today, what I consider the first day of summer. A season I have now ambivalent to negative feelings about. But I want to start the month and the season with an observation I made recently. You could call it an epiphany of sorts. 22 degree Celsius is the ideal summery temperature for me. You can wear light clothes and you feel fine, you do not need a coat, even if it is windy, but it is not too hot as to be sticky, sweaty, uncomfortable and overall disgusting. If I could have a summer that remains around 22 degree Celsius, I would find it bearable and almost pleasant. Sadly it will most likely not be the case.
