Wax Anniversary
Today is our 16th wedding anniversary, for my wife and I. It is what we call a wax anniversary apparently, or so I read online. Traditionally, you must give like presents made of wax, which is pretty reductive: that means you must give candles. And the stone that represent it, again according to a quick Google search, is the peridot. I know nothing about that stone, though I do like its green colour. But my wife does not like green things. Anyway, all this musing about wax and stones are pretty pointless: how you celebrate a marriage is truly determined by whether you have children or not. Since Wolfie entered our lives, he became the true reason for celebrating. Last year we went to a restaurant as a couple while he was babysat by his grandparents and it just felt wrong. We still don't know how we will mark our wax anniversary (we are still tired after our holidays), but we know he will be part of the celebration. Maybe by drawing us a card with wax crayons or something.

Swedish Lucia for Dummies
You may not know, or maybe you do, but today is the Feast of Saint Lucy, and it is an important day in Sweden. Almost 30 years ago, we had a Swedish foreign exchange student who came for a year in our family and she kind of celebrated it a bit with us: she made the safron buns and had some candles on or something. We ate the buns during our game of D&Dr and this was so perfect. Anyway, Christmas is on its way and I thought that Saint Lucy's Day deserved a post. So here is a crash course on how Sweden celebrates it:

Christingle
A long, long time ago, before the pandemic, and by that I mean two years ago, we went to a special Christmas activity day organised by a local church. (Booh! Hiss! And on a side note yes, the Godless heathen that I am has always been wary of them, this had not been my idea.) For one of the activities, they made a Christingle. I took a picture of it and found it again yesterday, so I decided to share it. My mum made Christingles in the past, but it is not exactly a family tradition, us being Godless heathens and all. All the same, it looks quite cute, so I decided to share it today.

Birthday berry cupcakes
You may remember that we went to Derbyshire last year, where we stayed with the family of my wife's childhood best friend, whi has a son the age of Wolfie. The two boys have become best friends, in spite living very far away. It was shortly after Wolfie's birthday, so when we arrived they had prepared a second birthday party for him. There was a buffet meal and a few desserts, including a bunch of cupcakes with berries in them. Topped with candles, as a "real" birthday cake would. The cupcakes were as delicious as they were original and I thought this was a really sweet gesture. It will be my birthday tomorrow and, while I will have a "proper" birthday cake (at least I hope so, if we can bake it), I wished we also had these for the rest of the week.

Gargoyle holding a candle
I took this picture at my parents' home. This is one of the many gargoyles my brothers and I have. It is not mine specifically, I don't know whose is it, but after all these years, they are more or less a common property. I love all our gargoyles, but this one has something special: it is also a candlestick. The candle has been lit at least once, although I don't remember when, or if I have seen it at all. It is an old fashioned candle which fits the beast nicely. It is on display in the basement's living room, right were we play D&Dr, with other similar critters and ornaments. The gargoyle gives a nice bit of atmosphere to the place and the games and always fires up my imagination. I would like to see the candle lit once, but the surroundings in complete darkness, just to appreciate how the gargoyle looks in the dim light. It must be quite eerie.
