Autumnal Figure

These days, it's been way cooler than one would expect this time of year. I don't mind: it feels autumnal and I love autumn. Okay, I sound like a broken record: autumn is my favourite season. So I always keep on display decorations and things that remind me of it. Last year, in late September, I was down and out after getting suddenly unemployed. I rarely if ever do retail therapy, but I did it on that day. I bought this little figure in a local shop. I was actually looking for a present for my wife, saw this, and thought I would buy it for myself, because I was not sure she would enjoy it as much (don't worry, I bought her something else). With its orange cloak and gnomic look, it looks very much autumnal.

The Train Money Box

I received a few Amazon vouchers from my employers as a thank you gift for being a high performing employee. It happens sometimes. So I bought some Amazon stuff to make my life nicer. Apparently, it works like this. Things I did not necessarily need. As I have a lot of spare change and I never know what to do with it, I bought myself a money box. I mean, I could just give it to Wolfie, who would put it in his own piggy bank, but I thought he gets enough money as it is, just for the sake of dropping it in his piggy bank. So, I got this one for me. Hand mande and all in wood, it of course has a train on it. It looks elegant on a desk and there's a train on it, which was a very good reason to buy it. It is not the most practical piggy bank: I cannot take its content unless I take it apart. And I'm not so sure how to do it. So the highest value coin I dropped in it was 20p. It won't make me rich, but I like looking at it.

Des "Vikings"(?)

J'ai trouvé parmi mes vieilles photos celle-ci.

A fireman and a paramedic

Last weekend, we went to a fire station open day. It was a very small event, with only a few people, a few displays, but also some freebies: free pencils, free pens, free rulers, but also free little fur balls critters. We got two for my collection of cute critters, one fireman and one paramedic, with his ambulance frame. I think they look really cool. I'm glad I got the fireman, as I hadn't had one yet.

Courtesy of the Royal Navy

As my readership might know, I kind of collect those little fur ball figures thingies, which you can find sometimes given as promo material for businesses or organizations. Well, yesterday we went to an emergency service family day, or whatever it was called. There were police patrol cars, firemen trucks and there was also a stand of the Royal Navy. They were giving away various stuff, including these two thingamajigs, one that is well, navy blue and the other that is sea green. I took them home. How cool are they?

Gargoyle holding a candle

I took this picture at my parents' home. This is one of the many gargoyles my brothers and I have. It is not mine specifically, I don't know whose is it, but after all these years, they are more or less a common property. I love all our gargoyles, but this one has something special: it is also a candlestick. The candle has been lit at least once, although I don't remember when, or if I have seen it at all. It is an old fashioned candle which fits the beast nicely. It is on display in the basement's living room, right were we play D&Dr, with other similar critters and ornaments. The gargoyle gives a nice bit of atmosphere to the place and the games and always fires up my imagination. I would like to see the candle lit once, but the surroundings in complete darkness, just to appreciate how the gargoyle looks in  the dim light. It must be quite eerie.

A friendly troll

Back in November, I blogged about a troll I found in a shop in York. I mentioned then that I had seen this brand before, in fact that my family bought one when we went to Sweden, years ago (and I know you can also find them in Norway). You can see on the picture the troll in question, much friendlier than one would expect of a troll: this one is maybe no older than a child (a child troll anyway) and is hugging a... dog? Wolf? Fox? Anyway, I always loved Norse folklore and legends and love stories about trolls, whether they are nice or nasty. So it made sense to buy at least one to decorate our home. This one is very cute in an ugly way. I decided to take a picture during my last time at my parents' home and share it here. I never found a name for him. If you have any suggestions, you make them in the comments. Although a troll might not need a name at all?

A troll in York

I took this picture in a shop in York, you can see here a proper Scandinavian troll. The monster, mind you, not the Internet creature. This one looks very much friendly (not to mention clean, with his reddish cheeks and nose) to be much of a monster. I love trolls and other mythological critters, especially from Norse folklore. I was very tempted to buy it, but he was too big for the flat we had back then, or to bring home. I actually knew that brand of trolls already: my family bought a similar one in Sweden, with the same colours and features. If I remember correctly, it is a Norwegian brand. All the same, I want to start a collection, but we still don't have much space here.

New little critter

My readership knows my fascination for little anthropomorphic fur balls (I don't know how you call them) which are used as promotional material for businesses and organizations. My last acquisition was Professor Red, which my wife brought to me from one of those jobs fairs. We found this one, the latest one in my collection, in a kiosk outside John Lewis (I think) from the Southern Central Ambulance Service. My wife was very embarrassed when I chatted to the volunteers there because she knew I had my eyes set on the little thingie. He's quite cool, with his many colours and the ambulance frame in front of him (or her?). I haven't found a name for it yet. Any suggestion?

Russian bird whistle

I have a Russian colleague at work and he recently came back from a holiday in his homeland (I've heard that Russians often call it the motherland). He is a nice guy and quite generous: back from his trip he gave me this bird whistle. That is one cool souvenir. It is a unique one too: the colours and the designs are different for each whistle. I am not the only one who received it, so I know. It has a high pitch sound, not exactly melodic, but not unpleasant. It makes for both an original decoration and, if you are bored and have nothing to do, an interesting toy. Seriously, I must have been blowing the whistle a thousand times since I had it. And it's Russian therefore exotic. I don't know if it has been hand made somewhere in a small Russian village or if it comes off from a factory in China, but it looks Russian and crafted. Anyway, I absolutely love my new bird whistle.

A house troll

I blogged not so long ago about the Arensbak Trolls. These trolls are not like the trolls of Norse mythology and Scandinavian folklore, they are not evil monsters, but more akin to spirits of nature and, since these trolls are for home, they are also household guarding spirits. My brother and have gathered some through the years, thanks mostly to my parents' generosity. This one is mine. It is comfortably set on one of my bookshelves in my bedroom, guarding my books. I was very tempted to bring him back with me, but then I thought better of it: the bookshelves here are already cluttered and this troll has been guarding my books all his life and this is how he should remain. I recently showed the picture to the Ticklers, who thought my troll was really cute and spontaneously said they wanted one like this. Maybe one day I should.
