Matrimony Jam

Sometimes, we like to go to garden shops nearby. I like to buy artisan products, like for instance jam. I actually prefer to buy jams from small garden shops than big supermarkets and chain stores. I don't know, it feels more... genuine. A few years ago, shortly before Wolfie's birth I believe, I bought this one, "Matrimony Jam". I just thought it was an interesting mix of apples, pears and plums and the name intrigued me. From what I understand, a "matirmony jam" is a jam made of two complimentary fruits (see, like two people getting together on holy matrimony). No idea why this one has three fruits, I guess calling it a "ménage à trois" jam would be wrong. It was the one and only matrimony jam I ever had, because I never found it again, in this garden shop or any other.

"All I Wanna Do"

Here's some music, to celebrate Friday and the coming weekend, which I have been needing badly. I know very little about Sheryl Crow (my brother PJ is a bit of a fan), but always loved All I Wanna Do. I think it is a perfect for a Friday when you feel carefree or want to be carefree and just want to have some fun. Even though I know the song talks about Tuesday, I never considered it a Tuesday song. It's a weekend is coming song.

Shaving blades

Something trivial I discovered recently that surprised me. When I was younger, say a decade younger, I used Gillette Mach3. Then I discovered Gillette Fusion and this is what I used from then on as razor and shaving blades. A few weeks ago, I bought a Mach3 again because 1)they were on discount and 2)there was no Fusion blades available atthe drugstore where I was. The result? I woke up this morning as if I had not shaved at all. And I got a few cuts while shaving from my troubles. Moral of the story: either I am getting hairier, or my skin adapted to more powerful razors and can't revert back to what I used to have.

He's had his time!

I missed blogging on one anniversary back on the 25th: the birthday of Anthony Burgess, my favourite writer. I was not sure how to commemorate and celebrate it this time and I had, talking of time, little of it to blog about the birthday anniversary, so in the end I decided to have a think about it. Then it struck me that I saw a few months ago in a nearby library the second book of his biography, You've Had Your Time. I think it was on sale for charity. I did not buy it, because I already have it, both in French and in English. That said, thought I would encourage you to read this book and the first volume of Burgess' Confessions, Little Wilson and Big God. They are autobiographies, but they read like a novel, mostly because a lot of it is completely fabricated. So yeah, read them.

12 years of blogging

Well, what with Shrove Tuesday yesterday, I forgot to celebrate one anniversary (two in fact, but the other one is for another post): Vraie Fiction is now twelve years old. I started blogging on the 25th of February 2008. I know it is one day late, but as blogging is something I do a lot in my (few) spare time and as it is something I enjoy doing, I thought it was worth a mention.

A savoury pancake for Shrove Tuesday?

Today is Shrove Tuesday. I refuse to call it Pancake Day, however tonight, as it is tradition, we are going to have pancakes for dessert. Part of me would rather have a savoury pancake for main meal. When we go to Britanny (which may not happen anymore as my in-laws are moving back here), I had a lot of these, called galettes, basically buckwheat pancakes, and they were delicious. This one was a crêpe nordique or a crêpe norvégienne, can't remember exactly. Maybe it had different names at different restaurants, come to think of it. In any case, it had salmon, sour cream, fried egg ad I think chives. And it was filling, almost healthy and yummy. This is what I ate in most crêperies and this is what I wish I could eat tonight.

"To swap punches with a power shovel"

"I need a man good looking enough to pick up a dame who has a sense of class, but he's got to be tough enough to swap punches with a power shovel."

I am reading Trouble Is My Business by Ramond Chandler and this is how someone describes his legendary private eye Philip Marlowe. It fits him, but it fits so many that were inspired by him and it is such a great and vivid description that I wanted to share it here. I love reading Chandler just for such lines.

All About Ghosts is back

I blogged before (and often) on a book that was a big part of my childhood and influenced greatly the development of my spooky mind. I am talking of All About Ghosts. First published in 1977, I learned last year that it has been released again for the Halloween season. It is, in effect, back from the dead. I had already plenty to read, so did not buy it then, but a few days ago I ordered it and it arrived today. Wolfie got very curious, but I did not want to show him too much, as some images can be very upsetting for a young mind. Still, nice to see that he has the same interest as his dad. I know Halloween is eight months away, but I like to plan my scary reads for when it comes.

Farmer's Ale (the beer with the tractor on the label)

I had this beer in a pub in Derbyshire. I cannot remember the name of the pub just now, but I want to blog more about it bcause it has an interesting history. Right now, I just want to tell this funny anecdote. I dranks lots of products from the Bradfield Brewery during our stay there. This one was called Farmer's Ale and you can tell why I had it. One of them is because it was nice and dark enough and really the perfect beer for a cold and wet night. The other is that it had a tractor on the label, and little Wolfie being completely obsessed about tractors, it is the one he wanted me to have. Yes, he is too young to drink, but he still helps me to choose the right beer. Sometimes he can be very bossy too.

Barber Shop Wisdom

I went to get a haircut today and it was about time: I looked like a a goddam hippy. This is what I said to the lady barber, a matronly English woman in her fifties, who replied: "I hope you don't start smoking a peace pipe in here!" I thought it was funny and a new great unknown line. She was quite friendly and chatty, and gave me quite a few great unknown lines and bits of wisdom. I I don't remember them all, they were firing them up in quick succession, but among other things, when I told her I had just bought a few beers at the shop next door, nothing important, she said: "But these are the essentials! Things that help get through life in a better mood!" Pure wisdom, I said. I will go back there again for my next haircut.

"Guillermo"

"The city in these pages is imaginary"

"The city in these pages is imaginary. The people, the places are all fictitious. Only the police routine is based on established investigatory technique."

Crime fiction afficionados have recognized the beginning of every novel from Ed McBain's 87th Precinct series. I quoted it before. I always get excited reading this intro, every time I do it feels like the first time. It struck me, reading the post I wrote last Friday, that I have not read a McBain novel for quite a long while (last year in June if I'm not mistaken) and that I miss the detectives from the 87th. So I ordered two of them and I should read them soon.

My autumn jumper

You might remember that I blogged back in 2018 about this jumper from White Stuff. I bought it then and it quickly became my favourite jumper, because of its fiery autumnal colours. It is, by any practical means, my autumn jumper. It does not look like this picture though. It is barely more than a year old and it is already looking worn out. This is how much I love it. Wearing it out of my favourite season helps me stay patient when I long for it. Because when it is not autumn, I think of autumn and I prepare mentally for autumn.

White chocolate Snickers?

My readers may remember that I really like Snickers bar. I find the mix of chocolate, caramel, nougat and nuts to be the perfect mix of indulgent sugar and protein. Sugar and chocolate for endorphins, nuts for feeling not too guilty about the high sugar content. I tried many of its variants: the one with almonds which I really liked, and the one with hazelnuts which is to this day my favourite Snickers. I recently tried a limited edition (or so it said in the wrapping) white chocolate Snickers. £0.99 for a bar. I don't think it was worth that price. So far it is my least favourite Snickers bar. Is it only me, or does white chocolate make desserts taste bland?

Synopsis for the Debut Dagger

As you may know, I am working on participating to the Debut Dagger Award. I have worked on it and I might actually be ble to submit the work on time. I am a bit more confident (but still cautiously confident) that at least I will submit something presentable. Partially because one of my fellow writers at the writing workshop, one who actually has a book deal already, helped me a lot for the synopsis. She really helped me sex it up a bit, so to speak, and make it gripping for new readers. Not only that, but since she only saw part of the story and not the whole thing, it showed me that readers could connect to what I had written, enough ti understand and relate to the characters. Ironically, she was once very critical about one of my character, saying that he was a chauvinistic dinosaur. Boy had I felt deflated at that time! Now I'm glad I stuck to the workshop.

A Map of London Bookswaps

I blogged before about our local book exchange phone booth. well, I was made aware yesterday of a link online showing a Map of London Bookswaps. Click on it and you will see a database showing where are the book exchange spots in London and This is not an exhaustive list and the Map is updated from time to time. It can be of some use to the readers of this blog who travel to London sometimes, or maybe even live in the city, so I am sharing it here. I intend to use it should I have time to go book hunting (literally) there. Some of these spots are worth a visit for their look alone.

Listening to the wind blowing

We've had another yellow warning of wind this last weekend and there was another one the week before and the weekend before. So we are getting used to it. I have to confess, I quite enjoyed it. when it comes to weather, there's not many things I enjoy more than strong blowing winds when you are inside, especially all snuggled up in bed or on the sofa. It's relaxing.

Wolfie's fascination for trains (again)

Picture taken at the National Railway Museum in York, uploaded here because it is very relevant to this post. My son loves sticker books, so my wife buys them often for him. recently, she got him the Usborne Build Your Own Trains Sticker Books, which incidentally features trains from the NRM (the Rocket is on page 14). Needless to say, Wolfie adores this book and we spent a lot of time filling it. I think we might go to York again this year for our next family holiday.

Attic fascination

I took this picture when we visited our friends in Derbyshire. This is the door leading to the attic room where we slept. I love attic rooms, for more details see my blog post from 2008 on the subject. Sleeping again in an attic room was one of the many nice aspects of our time there. And I discovered no later than today that Wolfie is also fascinated by attics. He insisted that I should move some of his old toys in the loft. It is true that he saw me going there last week and maybe all he wants is to see me using the ladder again. Still, he was really adamant that I should move things up in the loft.

No Time to Die (the song)

Boy, I am really getting excited about No Time to Die, the new James Bond film, coming this April. I am getting impatient in fact. Today the title song by Billie Eilish was released. I don't know the singer from Adam, but I listened to it tonight and absolutely loved it. My wife is not so sure, but wants to see the movie anyway. Here it is, you tell me what you think. I think it suits the Daniel Craig era perfectly and it puts me in a mood for some dark spy thriller.

"He Who Hesitates" for Valentine's Day

Happy Valentine's Day everyone and here is a reading suggestion for you today, or a present suggestion for your loved one if he/she loves crime fiction too. It is He Who Hesitates by Ed McBain and it is one of his 87th Precinct novels. A rather unique entry, as the detectives of the 87th are peripheral to the narrative, the point of view character being country boy Roger, who came to the City for family business errands and ends up... Well, ends up doing something of a sinister and criminal nature, let's leave it at that. It may not be everyone's cup of tea and fans of the series might find it frustrating to barely see our beloved characters, but I found it to be an interesting study in the loneliness of monsters and their moral ambiguity. Roger is in itself quite an endearing protagonist. And it is set around Valentine's Day, hence my recommendation. There is even a bit of romance in the novel.

Mafia Inc.

Cute Creepy Critter

In Sundown Adventureland, where we went last September, there was a "Singing Pet Shop" that had many animals that were either magical or extremely rare to the point of being the stuff of legends. It is difficult to explain, you have to be there. There was also this creepy little critter. I saw creepy, even though with the shaggy fur, dog-like muzzle and the big round eyes, he looks quite cute. But if you look closely, there is a label saying that  that the animal, whatever he may, loves children "especially roasted". I think the critter is up to no good and potentially dangerous and hides a sinister nature beneath his cuddly appearance. What do you think?

Police Intervention

I was having my lunchbreak walk yesterday when I suddenly heard sirens screaming. Then I saw two police cars, all lights blazing, going down the road to an unknown location. I think they were going to a dodgy area of the town where I work, which has its share of dodgy areas, come to think of it. I checked online later, I found nothing about any police operation. Were they going on a raid? A drug bust? Probably answering to some emergency call, thus the sirens, but what, I could not find. In any case, this brief sight got my imagination running, as it often is when I see a police car with sirens and emergency lights on. I always wonder where they are going and why. It's a good starting point as any for a crime story.

Root beer

This weekend, we quickly went to the local sweet shop, which is no longer local as it is part of a chain. It had plenty of American imports of sugary products that we find nowhere else in this country, including A&W's root beer. I don't remember when I first drank root beer, I think (but I'm not certain) that I was no longer a child, but be that as it may, I have a vague memory of tasting far too sweet and being absolutely unrefreshing. I think drinking root beer back then was borderline edgy, as if you were more daring than if you were drinking any other soft drink. Be that as it may, I wanted to try it again, to see if it tasted like I remembered and because A&W's root beer has the reputation to be the best. Where I come from at least. I'm not sure it's the original recipe, or this brand truly is the best root beer there is, because it did not taste nearly as bad as I remembered. To my surprise, it was actually rather pleasant, like having a cream soda.

St-Helens the most romantic place on Merseyside?

Since Valentine's Day is coming, here is a piece of news on the subject of romance that was a bit... staggering. Anyway, one of my old housemates from the time I lived in Liverpool shared this Liverpool Echo stating that St Helens is the most romantic town on Merseyside. Really? I mean you look at that picture of the town centre they used in the article and you wonder what is the least romantic town. It is difficult to imagine any place in Merseyside as romantic, or at least romantic looking. I remember my Valentine's Day there, spent preparing my lectures while my fiancée was watching tellie. But a few days later we went to the city and we had quite a nice time, even though Liverpool is not the kind of city you'd qualify of romantic. In the end, it's not the place, it's not the time, it's what you make of place and time.

Hooded Outlaw

During our last English holidays in September, when we visited the family of the childhood friend of my wife and especially her son Uber who is Wolfie's best friend ever, we spent a day at Sundown Adventureland, a theme park for young kids. The kind of place that can also appeal to daddies who never quite grew up. There were many fun rides. We did not try them all, but we enjoyed a few, including the Rocky Mountain Railroad, which was basically a western setting. It was a goldmine full of gold diggers and also bandits attacking the convoy we were one. I took a few snapshots, including this one which I think is pretty neat. A menacing hooded outlaw (and what a hood!) gunning down on us. With the light, it almost looks like a desperado in a real ambush.

Windy Sunday

Well, it is becoming a habit of sorts: BBC Weather gave us a yellow warning of winds for today. All day. Thankfully,we are Sunday, so it is a good excuse as any to stay at home without feeling too guilty about it. We have a lot of housechores to do here. Or we can just be lazy and do as little as possible, or nothing at all.

Question existentielle (356)

"Playmospace"

Once upon a time, my brothers and I had a few Playmobil sets. I was discussing this with my brother PJ recently and we mentioned that the very first one we had was a space shuttle with three astronauts in it, one red, one yellow and one another colour. PJ thought he found it online. I did my own research and it appears that the collection was called Playmospace. I remember this space shuttle fondly. There was one action figure for each one of us (my character was the yellow one), the vehicle and the equipment looked absolutely out there and it became the center of our science-fiction make belief games. At some point, we the shuttle and the astronauts were merely used as reference and we played a live action version of the game. I hope I can find a similar shuttle for Wolfie one day.

Death Train/Detonator

There are bad movies, and there are bad movies one loves. Years and years ago, back in the days of VHS and videoclub, I rented a made for TV B movie. It's title is Detonator, or Death Train in the US. It's an action thriller set on a train hijacked by terrorists lead by a mysterious Russian general turned rogue. Not only did they hijacked the train, but they put an artisanal A bomb on it. And there is a second bomb somewhere else, to complicate things further. This is a sinister but (very) convoluted scheme to restore USSR and it makes very little sense. But there's action on a train going through Europe, with an nuke as a MacGuffin, so what's not to love? And a word on the casting: you have a pre-Bond Pierce Brosnan as the lead, Patrick Stewart to give this mess some proper British thespian gravitas, Christopher freaking Lee as the villain (magnificent as always), a pre Lester Freamont Clarke Peters... Seriously, if nothing else, the casting director did his job right. Is it good? No, not by any stretch of the imagination. But I had a ball rediscovering it recently.

Barefoot on the cold floor

Yesterday, because Wolfie had done even more splashing in the bath than usual, I got my socks completely soaked. So after we put him to bed, I went downstairs barefoot, because I thought well, there is no point wasting a pair of socks for a few minutes before shower and bed. It struck me how cold the wooden floor was. Moral of the story: houses here are very poorly insulated. I've been living here for almost two decades and it still not use to it.

Foggy Morning

I had not experienced it in a long while, but yesterday going to work, walking on my way to work to be precise, there was a lovely fog around. Not a mist, a proper fog. I didn't remember it being forecast, don't think it had been, but it was ncie walking through it, especially since the route I take from the bus station to work is rather ugly looking. The whole town where my office is is quite ugly in fact, minus one or two spots. So with the fog, you sort of forgot about it and you could just enjoy the atmosphere fogs always bring.

"First" Land Rover

Today, my wife went with her friend (Blonde Tickler's mum) to the thrift shop. She had promised me that she behaved, but in the end, she bought this Land Rover from Bruder. It looks like nothing on this picture found online, but it is quite impressive in real, looking quite massive for a child's toy. Like a real Land Rover, except in size. Even the name is cool: Land Rover Defender. Its price online is £34.99, my wife bought it £8.00. A bargain, especially since it is almost new. And it comes with a trailer and a horse, so it's not only another vehicle. It sort of expands Wolfie's horizons a bit. He is already quite excited about it. I must say, it is one of these children toys which I don't mind too much. I am actually looking forward to accompany Wolfie in his new adventures with this Land Rover. And the horse. We'll need to find a name for the horse, come to think of it.

Orange and rooibos

Or, maybe the title should say: rooibos à l'orange or rooibos with orange. Anyway, during our last stay in Derbyshire with our friends, we were really treated like royalties. Which means they had plenty of fancy, upmarket food and drinks which they generously shared with us. In the evening, when I did not drink alcohol, I used to drink the Rooibos Orange from Newby. I did not know this company, but apparently this particular brew of rooibos is award winning and I could see why. The orange gives it a bit of extra citrus taste that really mixes well with the rooibos. Rooibos is my caffeinated free drink of choice and what I consider the best beverage that came out of South Africa. And this rooibos is one the best I've had.

An old pulpy book

We used to have an Oxfam bookshop in our little town, which closed down a few months ago, to my great sadness. I rarely found anything good in it, but sometimes I stumbled upon real treasures, or simply interesting little books, long forgotten titles. This is where I found the thriller I am currently reading: Alice by E.V. Cummingham (one of the pennames of Howard Fast). I knew nothing of the author when I bought it (and still don't). I was just intrigued by what the back cover told and I trusted that Pan Books would deliver, as they generally do. The novel or novella (it is only 156 pages) was first published in 1963, this edition is from 1965. It cost me £1.99. The price tag is still on its back cover. I think I might leave it there. The pages are dry and yellow, otherwise not too worn out, but gosh I love to have something like this. There is just something about long forgotten books you find at random.

Banana Bread

Yesterday we made time to bake our own dessert, trying to be healthy and all. We had bananas that were getting seriously ripe, so we decided to make banana bread. My parents' recipe. There are plenty online, they are all more or elss the same (seriously, how different can be a plain, simple banana bread), but Wolfie was adamant that he wanted us to make "grandpapa's cake" and no other, so this is what we made, even though the recipe comes originally from my mum who got it from a colleague I think. That was decades ago and it has been our banana bread recipe since then, the one that I enjoyed through childhood and beyond. My wife had a bit of struggle making conversions of measures, but in the end wethink it was a success. Wolfie loved it anyway. So here you have it, the result of three generations of banana bread bakers.

02/02/2020

We are today the second of February 2020, which means that this date is a palindrome. Or, what social media has already called it, #PalindromeDay, with the hashtag and all. The first Palindrome Day in 909 years, apparently. More details about it here. I had not known that social media had gone crazy about it and I already wanted to mention it on this blog. So here it is. Enjoy your Palindrome Day or, if it is over already where you are, I hope you enjoyed it.

Missing the local bookshop

We went downtown kind of late today, we ran a few errands, then went home. And when we arrived home it struck me: We had not stopped in the local bookshop. In fact, I haven't been in the local bookshop since last year. In fact, I haven't been in any bookshop since the last week of December. Now, I have plenty of books yet to read on my bookshelves and I can be busy for weeks and even months going through them. Still, it kind of sucks. Because I love going to a bookshop, if only for a few minutes. I find it relaxing and also stimulating. And it's not like me to keep away from bookshops for ages, especially since we have a local one which I want to support, thank you very much. I will need to fix this soon.
