Whatever happened to the local May Fayre?

Every year in May, we have a fayre held in the biggest park of our little town. It's on Saturday, usually the last Saturday of May. But this year, we have nothing. For some reason, it stopped. No explanation has been given, as far as I know. My wife and I checked on social media, in the local news, nothing has been said about this cancellation. They just haven't advertised it this year. I was already seriously down that the autumn fair has been cancelled this year (and maybe permanently), this is getting worse, adding salt to the wounds. It's just really depressing how special events I look forward to all year just disappear.

Farewell to the local autumn fayre

 I learned some sad news recently, which I wanted to blog about: as you may know, there is a local carnival held every year in September, the third or fourth Saturday of the month, in the biggest park in town. I blogged about it often before, like here. To me, it's like an officious autumn fayre. Sadly, for whatever reason (not sure if they were made public) the organisers cannot organise it this year, so there will be no local September carnival. No autumn fayre. This is one of the public event in our community I look forward to the most in the year. I'm really gutted.

Dernier jour de février

 Bon, lieu commun abominable: c'est le dernier jour de février. Fin du mois, une fin de semaine, un samedi. Je l'apprécierai d'autant plus que j'ai recommencé à travailler. Donc, pour moi, février a été un mois plutôt positif, somme toute. Je sais que février fait partie d'un des mois les moins populaires de l'année, c'est même parfois considéré comme le mois le plus déprimant de l'année, je suis moi-même ambivalent à son sujet, mais j'ai lentement appris à l'apprécier. Et vous, comment a été votre mois de février?

Samedi aux Bouquinistes

Il y a des samedis comme ça où parfois j'ai comme envie d'être à Chicoutimi. Quand j'y vivais ado ou jeune adulte et que je m'ennuyais un samedi après-midi avec rien à lire (ce qui n'est pas mon cas en ce moment), j'allais marcher jusqu'aux Bouquinistes pour m'acheter un livre ou deux. Des fois j'avais une idée précise de ce que je voulais lire, des fois non. Je me rappelle encore l'excitation à regarder les tablettes et faire des trouvailles.

Post. Halloween. Blues.

Today is All Saint's Day, which is of course the day after Halloween. I used to loathe November just because Halloween was over. This is no longer the case, however I still suffer from post-Halloween blues every first of November. It falls on a Saturday today, I'm not sure if it makes it better or worse. I have a whole weekend to enjoy, yet I also miss the anticipation, the eeriness, the spookiness, the everything. Don't worry: it used to take me a month or so to get through the dreary feeling, now it only lasts a day or two. I will blog more about what I love of November, so watch this space.

Upcoming Bookshop Day

I have been wanting to mention this for a while, but got caught up in other things (read my last post), so anyway, little announcement for the people living in the UK: there will be a Bookshop Day on the 11th of October. Kind of perfect time in the year for a bookshop day, as it is my favourite time in the year. Anyway, even though I am not short on books, I will go to our nearest indie bookshop and buy a few. There are worse ways to spend Saturday.

Le Salon du livre de loin

C'est encore le Salon du Livre du Saguenay Lac-Saint-Jean, aujourd'hui. Quand j'y allais, c'était la plupart du temps un samedi, quand il battait son plein, en tout cas dans mon souvenir. C'était le gros évènement, la grosse célébration, de la fin de semaine, avant la fin de semaine de l'Action de grâce.  Maintenant je le suis de loin, enfin un peu, par le biais des réseaux sociaux. Officious Autumn Fayre

 Today, if everything goes well, we will go to the local carnival. It's officially called a carnival, but it truly is a fayre and, as it is set in the middle of September, generally in or around the equinox, I consider it an autumn fayre (well of course). It is in a park and, when the weather is right, like it should be today, it feels so perfectly autumnal. We have been going there every September since we started living here. I think the only exceptions were when we were invited at the birthday of one of Wolfie's friends. Thankflly, not this year. Today, we will go with some friends, as we often do. I love going there, it is one of my favourite activities in September, a special event that marks the arrival of my favourite season.

Bookshop Day (Upcoming)

Thanks to Books Are My Bag that the enxt Bookshop Day is Saturday the 12th of October. In a month's time, and on such perfect timing. I guess I don't have to tell you why. One of the many events to attend in the new few weeks. The promotional picture is really nice too.

Question existentielle (391)

 Nous sommes le premier samedi de septembre, autant dire le premier vrai samedi de l'année, enfin pour un enfant, puisque l'on compte le temps à partir de l'année scolaire. J'ai souvent blogué sur le premier samedi de septembre. Je bloguerai sans encore sur le sujet, mais je veux d'abord poser une question existentielle:

Recréer Ciné-famille

J'ai eu une inspiration récemment: recréer une filmographie de Ciné-famille, pour moi et peut-être, si ça l'intéresse, pour petit loup. J'ai déjà blogué sur Ciné-famille, l'émission radio-canadienne qui passait le samedi après-midi et où on présentait des films pour enfants. C'est tombé dans l'oubli, même si on trouve l'intro sur YouTube. Pour ce qui est du reste, j'en trouve très peu sur le sujet dans les internets. Avec ma mémoire, j'ai malgré tout réussi à retrouver certains des films et les ai mis dans une liste sur YouTube. Enfin, les titres dont je me rappelle. Je compte en mettre d'autres, si vous vous rappelez de ce qui y passait, faites-le moi savoir.

Question existentielle (383)

C'est le premier samedi de septembre, une date spéciale pour les enfants et pour tous nos souvenirs d'enfance. C'est le temps de la rentrée télé et des émissions pour enfants, surtout les émissions du samedi matin, qui étaient sans doute les meilleures. J'ai déjà blogué sur le sujet. Je ne veux pas faire un blogue complet là dessus, alors je vais me contenter de poser une question existentielle:

-Quelle est la meilleure émission pour enfants ou dessin animé du samedi matin de tous les temps?

Ciné-Famille

Quelqu'un s'en souvient? Je désespérais de trouver quoi que ce soit en ligne sur Ciné-Famille, l'émission du samedi après-midi à Radio-Canada qui passait des films pour enfants (surtout des dessins animés, selon mon souvenir). À partir de janvier surtout, Ciné-Famille permettait de nous donner du moral pour passer à travers l'année jusqu'aux vacances. Et il y avait plusieurs trouvailles fascinantes. Mais enfin bref, je suis tombé par hasard sur le début de l'émission sur YouTube. Je partage donc aujourd'hui.

Postponed Carnival

Today, we were supposed to go to the local Carnival. I always loved that carnival, mainly because it is set in the biggest park in town during the second half of September and often feels very autumnal. It's like a carnival welcoming the equinox, in a way. I blogged about it before. But due to the death of Queen Elizabeth and subsequent national grief, it has been postponed. At first, I was gutted, as I feared the carnival would be cancelled. But they decided to postpone it until... the 1st of October. Which is deeper into autumn. Hopefully it will be chilly. So anyway yes, the carnival has been postpone, but I think we will just appreciate it more when it happens.

À propos de Samedi-Jeunes

J'ai blogué avant sur Samedi-Jeunes (ici et là), l'émission jeunesse du samedi matin à Rad Can qui m'a fait découvrir beaucoup de dessins animés. De France, de Belgique des États-Unis et aussi et surtout du Japon. Mais il y avait aussi des séries plus "lourdes", pas animées du tout, avec des protagonistes adultes. Jeme rappelle vaguement d'une série australienne de cape et d'épée avec un contrebandier appelé Donovan (je crois) et un ou deux autres trucs. Des histoires moins faites pour les enfants. J'aimerais bien les retrouver en ligne, ou voir si quelqu'un d'autre s'en souvient.

Petit sketch ce soir d'une émission qui m'a bien fait rire quand j'étais plus jeune. J'imagine que je ne suis pas le seul à me rappeler de Samedi de Rire. C'est peut-être la nostalgie qui parle, mais j'ai regardé ça à nouveau ce soir et j'ai encore ri.

Le "Carnaval" local

Hier, nous sommes allés à un "carnaval" local, en fait une sorte de foire qui se tient chaque septembre pour un samedi. Sauf l'année dernière, pour cause de pandémie. J'ai déjà blogué sur le sujet en 2019. Cette année ils l'ont fait un peu (trop) tôt durant le mois à mon goût, mais nous y sommes allés rien que pour voir du monde et pour nous dégourdir les jambes. Après les mois de confinement, ça nous a fait un bien immense, même si nous ne sommes plus habitués de marcher autant.

Writing Workship from Zoom

Big news yesterday: the hostess of our writing workshop I used to go to before the pandemic broke down has had the brilliant idea to start it all over again, this time on Zoom. I had suggested it before and it was about bloody time we'd make a move about it. It will be the Saturday every six weeks for the time being. Otherwise it will be the usual: 2,000 words of a work each, we comment on it, give advices, etc. I haven't written all that much, since I am focusing on working on that draft I sent to my editor, but I have plenty of long short stories I want to share. Crime fiction, it goes without saying. That will give me something to look forward to and hopefully it will push me to write more and stop procrastinating.

Saturday at home

Happy Saturday everyone! How are you going to spend it? We did quite a lot of exciting things our last three weekends: see family and friends. But this one, at least today, we will most likely spend it in. Not because we are exhausted (although it is nice to stay in from time to time), but because they are forecasting thunderstorms and we'd rather not get caught in it. Beside, we have a lot of things to do on the home front, although I suspect we will do far less than what we have planned. But hey, sometimes it's good to be a bit lazy, especially during weekends. So anyway, a lazy (or not) Saturday in and a thunderstorm if we are lucky. What more to ask for?

Missing the local carnival

 I blogged about this in French last year, using the same picture. Every year, the third Saturday of September, our little English town hosts her "carnival", a little fête done in a nearby park. The celebration starts with a procession with allegorical cars which ends in a local park where the celebration takes place. There is music, stands, local breweries seeling their stuff. I love it because although not made to celebrate autumn consciously, it is still set around the equinox and it can be quite autumnal. And because there are probably no better way to spend a Saturday of September than drinking beer in an English park. It's just so perfect. And because we live in a fine town. Sadly, this year's carnival has been cancelled, for obvious reasons. And we missed the procession last year. I hope we can appreciate it next year.
