"Eye drop" you

This week, my wife is going to give a lift to the mother of Blonde Tickler who is going to the hospital for an eye check and to receive some eye drops for whatever minor issue she has with her eyes. So she told her: "I will need to drop my son to preschool, then I drop you to the doctors." I drop you to an eye drop. "Eye drop you." I heard it and I thought it was very funny. Okay, this is an absolutely atrocious pun. What can I say, I am tired and easy to please. But however bad I thought I had to share it here.

I'm a Cryptkeeper again

Soon it will be October and soon the official Countdown to Halloween will start. So I am, or will be, a Cryptkeeper again. And the badges are already available, so I chose mine: this is this ghost with a skull face and a top hat. He looks scary and creepy. I might write a ghost story featuring him. In any case, I hope you are getting as excited as I am, because my favourite holiday is very near.

"Meat pies"

My dad sent me this picture recently of a meal he had: what we call "pâtés à la viande" (basically pork mince pies), olives, homemade cranberry sauce and a bit of salad to have green vegs. With cream as salad dressing. Very simple and typically Quebecker. Autumn is a time for hearty food and you can hardly find more appropriate meal than this one for the season, although it's also often ate during Christmastime. All the same, I'd love to eat meat pies these days. It just feels right.

Wolfie at preschool

As I mentioned here, our little Wolfie had his first day at preschool. Or, to be precise, his first half day, as he only goes for three hours or so. And to my relief and also my great sadness, he did really well. He did not even cry when his mummy left, he just said goodbye distractly. He played with cars, trucks and other things, he even made two (girl)friends. So young and already a womanizer. Okay, maybe not that much, he can't be that precocious, but my son is a little charmer. So I am proud of him for having done so well. Just a little sad at the same time that he is growing up so quickly.

Posthumous Cohen

As you probably know already, there is a new song of Leonard Cohen that has just been released, posthumously. Well, more like a poem turned into music. I think I actually read it. Anyway, it is called The Goal and I share it below. I have not much more to say, except that apart from the melancholy, it feels like the action is set in Montreal. Don't ask me why, I always picture Montreal when I listen to Cohen.

Beware the Seven O'Clock Man

I blogged a couple of months ago about le Bonhomme Sept Heures, a bogeyman from Quebec's folklore who used to scare the bejesus out of me when I was a child. The creature that haunted some of my nightmares and many children before me (and probably some after) freely inspired the horror novel The Seven O'Clock Man, which I bought and already read for my countdown to Halloween. I might blog about it in more details in October and "plug" the novel more formally, but suffice to say now that I enjoyed it tremendously. Enough so I lend it to Blonde Tickler, who has started reading it and apparently is having a ball reading it too. I am quite happy, as not only I am sharing my love of horror stories with her, but by making her read this novel, I am also sharing a part of my culture. I will let you know what she thought about it. Until then, keep your children in after seven o'clock in the evening and beware of shadowy figures you see walking in your neighbourhood around that time. It might be the Seven O'Clock Man.

Time for preschool

As I had mentioned a few months ago, we had been visiting preschools to find one for Wolfie come... Well, come today, actually. Today, our son is going to spend a few hours in a preschool. His first preschool. He is ready, at least I hope he is. But I know that his mother and I are not. I cannot help but feel that it's darn too early, or rather that this is all happening way too fast. I hope he will be happy today and make new friend, and will not feel abandoned. I feel guilty enough leaving home every day for work, this pushes the guilt up to eleven. Time goes far too quickly.

Signs of Halloween

Well, it took a little while for English shops to get into gear, but they are finally showing signs of the upcoming Halloween. I was walking around Morrissons yesterday when I saw these artificial pumpkins and other decorations and accessories. There was an alley full of Christmas stuff, which got me a bit grumpy, but at least we had an Halloween aisle. It is not the first Halloween display I have seen, but so far it is the biggest one. Obviously, I got quite excited. I even bought a thing or two. Just a start, you know. I try not to blog too much about my favourite holiday until October, so I have things to blog about for the official countdown, but I thought I would share that tonight.

Inside the Tank

We went to the local carnival this weekend, one of the special days our little English town (village?) has around the equinox. And among many cool things we did was getting inside this tank. Well, Wolfie and I, my wife did not go in. I blogged before about the fascination I had with tanks when I was young, how much they were central to many of our make belief games, either toy tanks or "invented" ones (the neighbour's gazebo). Getting in a real tank with my thus revisiting a childhood memory. I learned a bit about these engines: this one is called the Spartan and is meant to transport troops. It is of course decommissioned, but apparently the same model is still use in some parts of Africa and if I remember correctly, elsewhere as well. I think Wolfie quite enjoyed his time in there too. Not his favourite kind of vehicle (which is reassuring, as I'd rather not have him become a soldier), but he seemed to enjoy it there.

Autumnal equinox

Today is the day of the autumnal equinox. On the 23rd of September, it arrives a bit late in the season this year, but here we are anyway. It is the first day of astronomical autumn. Which is a bit of an absurd concept: autumn truly starts with the first of September, for all intents and purposes. All the same, the days are finally getting shorter and it deserves to be celebrated as it is when autumn really starts to bloom. And to mark the equinox on this blog, I am sharing today this picture of a pathway in a forest, sent by my father recently. You can't get more autumnal than that.

Frites "patio"

Hobbit Day

Today is Hobbit Day, the day fans of J.R.R. Tolkien celebrate his work. Why the 22nd of September? Because it is the date of the birthday of Bilbo and Frodo Baggins. It kind of make sense that their birthday is on the 22nd of September: autumnal equinox, time for change, call for adventure. How would you observe Hobbit Day? I guess most would read The Lord of The Rings, particularly the chapters surrounding Bilbo's birthday. Here I mark it with an illustration of Alan Lee: Frodo (or is it Bilbo? I do think it's Frodo) discussing with Gandalf. But if I could, I'd spend the day with my brothers playing a game of Dungeons & Dragons, set in a halfling village. Like for many people, Tolkien's world brought us to D&Dr and it inspired us a lot, so it would make perfect sense.

Phone Booth Book Share

Today, we were going to the local carnival today, when I saw that one of the disaffected red phone booth was turned into a library of sorts. It is literally filled with books, as you can see on the picture. Although we were late to the event (we missed the parade), I decided to take a moment to take this quick snapshot. Not the best photo, but it gives you an idea. Now I had heard of this phenomenon which has appeared all around England and the UK, about old phone booth, the typically British ones that are all red, that had been filled with books and where people can take one and leave one. I didn't know we had one here. I think this is a great initiative to promote reading and enhance cultural life in a community. I intend to participate.

Getting ready for Halloween yet?

I know I am. And no, this is not the front door of my home, although I wish it was. One of my friends shared it on Facebook and I decided that it was so good I had to share it here. Decorations, pumpkins, Jack O'Lanterns, I cannot take them out just now (my wife would not let me), but I am getting ready for my favourite holiday of the year and have been for quite a while. Early August, to be honest (that's how obsessed I am about it). I have seen early signs of Halloween already (more on that in future posts) and I have started reading horror stories. I will blog more about them when the official countdown to Halloween starts in October. You will find quite a lot of reading suggestions on this blog come next month.

Autumn barbecue

This is a new post for my autumn chronicle. Our hosts during our stay in Derbyshire decided to do a barbecue one evening. It was a cold evening, as it often is the case this time of year in this region of England. You can see on the picture what we had: burgers, hot dogs, jacket potatoes, grilled corn on the cob(mostly burned sadly). There was also salad, wine, it was a great meal and especially a great time to enjoy it. And we all did, even though by the time we started eating it, it was pretty cold outside. As I explained to our hosts (and like I mentioned in a post back in 2016), my grandfather loved to eat outside at almost any time of year, until the first snow at least. So eating out in autumn is something that runs in the family.

Cadenhead's whisky

As I mentioned yesterday, we are back from a stay with the oldest friend of my wife and her family. They live in Derbyshire, where my wife and her friend grew up. On our first night, as our wives were putting the kids to bed, the husband offered me Candenhead's whisky as night cap. I hesitated at first: we had been through a long journey and I had already had taken alcohol at suppertime. Then it was a fourteen years old single malt whisky and, while I am no expert in spirits, I know it could only mean that it is good stuff, so I had a glass. Straight. And it was indeed very tasty, although pure fire. I believe it is 54.9% alcohol, just to give you an idea. Did I enjoy it? Yes. Did I regret it? No, even though it did gave me a headache and a dry mouth afterwards.

Ça va me manquer, comme à chaque année.

The return of the train travelers

I took this picture at the National Railway Museum in York and as usual I put it here because it goes with tonight's topic. And incidentally, we did go to Yorkshire briefly. So we renewed with train travels again last week and just got back from a lovely short holiday, where we stayed with a childhood friend of my wife (her very first friend) and her family (her son and her husband). I will blog more about it, but let's say now that little Wolfie is getting a taste for train journeys and he is a pretty good traveler, although he does get sometimes a bit hyper. But he was very good and overall very patient. Both journey there and back have been exhausting, but I can't wait to do more train journeys as a family.

"Happy Birth Dya"

Finally, this is the cake which Wolfie had for his birthday. A chocolate cake, but not my mother's family recipe. It is something my wife found on BBC Good Food, an easy chocolate cake with some coconut in the icing. Wolfie did the baking of the cake with his mother, then his mother and I did the icing. Then finally, Wolfie himself added the candles. He insisted on doing it. You might now see it, but some of the candles are letters, meant to create a "happy birthday" message. Wolfie got creative putting them on, so the message says: "Happy Birth Dya". I thought it was too cute to put the candles in the right order.

Vendredi 13

The Star of Cate Blanchett

My borther is on holidays and he is spending some time in Los Angeles and Hollywood. And he took a few pictures and shared this oneon Facebook. I know I am silly, because it is just a star on the pavement and the person it pays homage to is not, was not nearby, but I was still dying with envy. As the regular readers of this blog know, Cate Blanchett is my favourite actress, bare none. So not many starts in Hollywood impress me, but this one does.

18 years of 9/11

Today is the 18th anniversary of 9/11. When the new century in which we live in truly started, in blood, fire and death and history was made and more importantly lived. I will not say that I remember it like it was yesterday, that would be a cliché, but I do remember it vividly. I guess it is difficult to avoid commonplaces when one talks of such event. For my own experience and my reflection on 9/11, please read this post from 2008 and this one from 2009. They are the posts I am most proud of of all my years as a blogger. Talking of years, 18 is, in man's age, the one when he reaches maturity. I know at least one child the daughter of my friends (the big sister of my godson), who was born late in August and was actually on the 11th of September. Strange to think of her as an adult, stranger to think of her as having spent the first weeks of her life among the chaos and horror of that time. Thankfully and of course, she was oblivious to it. And on a sadder note, I don't think we matured much as a species, if at all, since the 11th of September 2011.

An almost perfect September

This post is of course part of my autumnal chronicle. I have been quite happy since the beginning of September, mainly because it has been so far almost perfect for the autumn lover that I am. I am counting my blessings:

-We've had a few cold days where I could wear warm clothes. For the first time in months I have been able to wear my thick jumpers that are so comfy.
-Even when most of the days so far have been warm, it is always quite cool in the early morning and in the evening. And it has that kind of chill that you can only feel in autumn.
-The trees are still quite green, but some leaves have started changing colour.
-The ground is often already covered with leaves in any case.
-Sometimes in the evening, you can already smell bonfire.

So yes, not the ideal September, but has been a very pleasant one so far. The temperature should go up in the upcoming days, but given how the month started, I am fairly confident that it will not last. And for you, how is the month so far?

What cake for Wolfie?

For some unknown reason, my father sent me pictures he took at a Première Moisson, one of the most famous chain of bakeries in Montreal. Including this one, of very decadent cakes. And it reminds me that the birthday of Wolfie is going to be very soon and that we haven't decided yet of what cake to give him. We will most likely bake it ourselves, based on one family recipes, but we are not sure of which particular sort of cake to have. We showed a few pics to Wolfie, asking him to decide, he seems to like them all. Any suggestions, please let me know in the comments.

Rebellion Red (autumn chronicle)

This was tonight's poison: Rebellion Red by Rebellion Beer. I am very familiar with it: their products, especially this particular beer, are sold all around the South East of England. In fact, it is one of my favourite mcirobrewery in the country. There is a special reason why I drank this one and no other tonight: the Red has become their seasonal beer for autumn. I am of two minds about it, as it used to be available all year round. And while I love the beer itself, which is dark and dark reddish brown as I love them, I always thought that the name is a bit meh. I wish Rebellion had chosen something more evocative. But hey, with this colour, it is suitble enough for autumn.

Writing Workshop updates

Today I had another writing workshop. It started earlier than usual, 9:30, but to my surprise I got there on time. We were not many this time, only six, but it went on for two hours and a half. I showed them a bit more of the novella I wrote a few years ago, they enjoyed it a lot, I was told that I write really sharp dialogues. So all positive feedbacks. Next time we meet it will be October and I will share a ghost story for Halloween. Something I already wrote and shared on the blog. I will let you guess which one.

Calvin, Hobbes and my Saturdays

As it is the first Saturday of the month, I am sharing tonight for the first time in a long while a strip from Calvin and Hobbes which made me laugh a lot. My son is of preschool age, nevertheless this is the story of my Saturdays since I became a dad.

Question existentielle (350)

"What did the Roman ever do for us?"

There is a parody video about the ahem, current political situation in the UK that has been going on social media a lot recently. They used an audio from a very funny scene in Monty Python's Life of Brian. Now I must confess, for all my love of British humour, I have never watched Life of Brian. I will try to do it before next Easter or something. But in any case, if the new video was funny, the original is absolutely hilarious and as it is trendy, I thought I'd share it tonight here. The new one you can find here, the original below. Tell me which one you prefer.

Geese (autumn chronicle)

This evening, as the sun was almost completely set, we saw and heard (boy did we hear) a whole flock of geese flying. We had seen them the month before, more and more, but it was this evening that they were more numerous and loudest. It was very impressive. One goose, or even many of them, do not make the season, but migrating geese is another characteristic of autumn. It was a short moment, but I very much enjoyed it and it was the highlight of my evening.

Nouveau foyer

Making coffee

You know that Wolfie might be a talented barista, but it seems that I might actually be, to my great surprise, a skilled coffee maker. I made the drinks this morning for my colleagues and I, and one, instead of tea, asked for coffee. She told me later that the cup I had prepared was quite good, enough for her to mention it and to ask me how I did it. It was just instant coffee, lots of it, and a bit of milk. Like when, in another life, I used to make it for myself when I was drinking coffee just to stay alert. I found out that I hated the taste and the effect, so I stopped, but apparently, I know how to make a good strong coffee. Go figure.

Autumnsong

For a while, this blog is going to be mainly a celebration of autumn, an autumn chronicle if you will. What can I say, I love the season that much. So anyway, as I was recently looking for autumnal music and autumn song, I found on YouTube... Autumnsong by Manic Street Preachers. I know nothing of the group, but they do good old rock and I find this tune quite catchy. Auutmn is not really featured much if at all in it, to be honest, which is kind of weird for a song with that title, but there is a line about the best time yet to come, which is fitting enough. By the way, the clip is may look minimalist and stupid, but there is a reason and story behind it. Anyway, enjoy:

Rediscovering the Railway

Picture from the National Railway Museum in York, uploaded here as it illustrates this post. For our last holiday, I enjoyed for the first time in more than a year train travel. As you may remember, I had been waiting eagerly for it. Wolfie is becoming quite an enthusiastic train traveler too. Although he gets upset when he hears loud noises and he was scared to enter the train when we started our journey, he really enjoyed the rides in the end, marveling at the view or every little feature of the train itself. It is far more exciting to travel as a family, even though it brings its share of extra stress. But we are getting used to it. And there are more journeys to come in the near future. I can barely wait.

"BANDITS at 12 o'clock"

The treasure one can find among the bookshelves of a house. So checking among the rather large library of my parents-in-law, I found this book: Commando: Bandits at 12 o'clock. An anthology from the Commando comic book magazine of "the 12 best air-combat commando books ever". I didn't even know this was a genre, or a sub-genre. War stories, yes sure, but air-combat commando stories? That is completely new to me. I might sound ironic, but I am actually very curious about this book, which is as you can imagine a doorstop. I can tell this belongs to my father-in-law. And I intend to borrow it from him on my next visit.

Breizh Cola

Celebrating September

Happy first of September everyone! It is also the first day of autumn, at least methodologically and in my mind. When it comes to my favourite season and this blog, it is all that matters. So to celebrate the month and the new autumn, as it is a tradition on Vraie Fiction, I share a picture taken by my parents of a sort of horn of plenty, showing the bounty of autumnal harvest: apples, the fruit most associated with the season, crab apples and crab apple jellies. I hope it puts you in the same frame of mind as me.
