Calvin, Hobbes and my Saturdays

As it is the first Saturday of the month, I am sharing tonight for the first time in a long while a strip from Calvin and Hobbes which made me laugh a lot. My son is of preschool age, nevertheless this is the story of my Saturdays since I became a dad.

Childhood summer drama

It is summer holidays here for children around the country and it reminded me of a strip from Calvin and Hobbes. I wanted to share it today just because it was on my mind. I do remember being sick on holidays sometimes as a child and it sure felt like this. Absolutely unfair.

Calvin's summertime wisdom

It is not technically summer yet, but it feels summery enough and this is a bank holiday weekend, so now is a good excuse as any to publish this strip from Calvin and Hobbes. Back when I was much younger and summer was a long holiday, I welcomed it. And this is pretty much how I felt about it.

Calvin's wisdom about New Year's resolutions

I have not blogged about Calvin & Hobbes for a while and thought as we are already the second day of the new year, I would share this one. I am not a big fan of New Years, if that makes sense, or the whole celebrations and traditions related to them, for a number of reasons which may be for another post (probably around 2018). Let's just say for now that I always hated new years resolutions, looking back on them even more, so I absolutely adore what Calvin says here. And the expressions of Hobbes is priceless.

Snow according to Calvin & Hobbes

It is much colder these days than it has been the last few weeks, for the first time in a long while we even have temperatures going below zero, yet there is no snow. They have been forecasting a possibility of snow, but so far nothing. And I am growing more and more impatient. Which reminds me of the state of mind of often had as a child as winter was getting nearer and nearer. It is exactly like the one of Calvin (from Calvin & Hobbes) in this comic strip. In a nutshell, this is the story of my childhood when I was eagerly waiting for winter. It's also a hilarious strip and I wanted to share it with you.

Autumn Sunday according to Calvin and Hobbes

I will write my countdown to Halloween later on today. Right now, this is a blog about autumn and Calvin and Hobbes. I re-read this particular strip recently and I wanted to share it with you. Autumn is now my favourite season, but to be honest it was not entirely the case when I was a child. Especially not on Sunday, for the reasons expressed in this cartoon: there was school the next day, lights were going down early. Then again I always loved the colours, so I also shared Hobbes' views. Because it is both funny and explains in a nutshell both autumn and Sunday melancholy, I decided to share it on the blog.

Christmas Eve

As I am writing this, it is already Christmas in Europe, where I usually blog from. But here, there are a few hours to go still. To commemorate this moment and to wish an early Merry Christmas to all my readers, I thought I would addthis little piece of poetry from Calvin and Hobbes. I find it a beautiful evocation of the season and it perfectly captures the moment. I read many Christmas stories, I even read a few Christmas poems, but this single comic strip is maybe my favourite. So here it is.

Yukon Ho!

I finished reading Yukon Ho! today. It's another hilarious comic book from Bill Watterson. I absolutely love Calvin's attitude to life. It is also amazing how Watterson mixes Calvin's imaginary world and the reality of childhood. You found out something in this book: Hobbes might be real, or real enough to exist beyond Calvin's mind. I strongly recommend it (but then again I always strongly recommend Calvin & Hobbes).

And I will give you the song Yukon Ho! that we find at the beginning of the book:

My tiger friend has got the sled,
And I have packed a snack.
We're all set for the trip ahead.
We're never coming back!
We're abandoing this life we've led!
So long, Mom and Pop!
We're sick of doing what youve said,
And now it's going to stop!
We're going where it snows all year,
Where life can have real meaning.
A place where we wont have to hear,
"Your room could stand some cleaning."
The Yukon is the place for us!
That's where we want to live.
Up there we'll ge to yell and cuss
And act real primitive.
We'll never have to go to school,
Forced into submission,
By monst, crabby teachers who'll
Make us learn addition.
We'll never have to clean a plate,
Of veggie glops and goos.
Messily we'll masticate,
Using any fork we choose!
The timber wolves will be our friends.
Well stay up late and howl,
At the moon, till nightmare ends,
Before going on the prowl.
Oh, what a life! we cannot wait,
To be in that arctic land,
Where we'll be masters of our fate,
And lead a life that's grand!
No more of parental rules!
We're heading for some snow!
Good riddance to those grown-up-ghouls!
We're leaving! Yukon Ho!

Deuxième Calvin and Hobbes

Calvin and Hobbes

I bought a Calvin and Hobbes today in Reading (at last I could get into a real bookstore). My wife already wants to give it to our niece. I am not sure about that yet.
