Cold War Crimes

I wanted to give one ultimate reading suggestion for #Noirvember and was not sure what to suggest. Then today I found by chance this article about climate changes and the way it is reshaping geopolitical interests and potential conflicts in the Arctic. The first picture of the article and its content made me think of the graphic novel Whiteout by Greg Rucka, which is set in Antarctica. But more exactly its volume two, Whiteout: Melt, as it features Russian mercenaries dressed pretty much like them. Anyway, I will not give much of either plots away, let's just say that they're dark, violent and, more to the point, cold. And both belong equally to the crime fiction and spy fiction genres, but they have heart. I try to revisit them this time of year. I will do it again, especially now that the graphic novels are very topical.

Deer in the woods

I took this picture in Derbyshire, but I am blogging about an anecdote that happened recently on our way to Henley. When I say anecdote, it is almost nothing: we were on our way there, in a road boarded by hilly woodlands, the kind that makes you feel like you are in the Shire, when I saw two deer walking by, on the top of a slope, in the woods. They were not very big and had no antlers, from what I understand it might have been a doe and her fawn, but of course I might be wrong. It was only for a few seconds, unfortunately Wolfie could not see them, but it made my day.

The beast in the water

I took this picture in Derbyshire, of a mysterious creature that was swimming in a lake at high speed. I will let you guess for a moment what this strange and unsettling critter is... Did you find out? It's an... otter. The picture was taken in an otter sanctuary. I had a look at it recently, when I was writing this post, and it struck me that this could easily pass for one of these pictures of lake monsters that folklore and cryptozoology are fond of. But no, the beast in the water was only a mundane otter. Which is just as well, because while I stopped believing in cryptids, I always loved otters.

Cyber Monday no more

As you may or may not know, today is Cyber Monday. I don't like Mondays much to begin with, but Cyber Mondays even less. Or at least it was the case when I was working in sales. Cyber Monday meant special offers, which meant a lot of customers coming to buy stuff, which meant frantic work in a short period of time and usually a handful of troubles: last minutes hesitations from some clients, problems with the discount codes or links, issues with orders, etc. As I do not work in sales anymore, at least not directly and not in such a way as Cyber Monday would need to be applied, I don't have to deal with it and its problems anymore. For me, this Cyber Monday is a Monday like every other. Which is bad enough, but it is bearable.

A new invitation to Derbyshire

I blogged last year about the childhood friend of my wife who lives in Derbyshire with her husband and her little boy, who is about two months younger than our old little Wolfie. We visited them a few years ago, where I took this picture (I am not sure I uploaded it before on Vraie Fiction) of their "neighbourhood", which is basically the countryside. They live in a lovely place. She recently renewed the invitation she made a year ago to us, about spending a few days, maybe a long weekend, at their place. It would be lovely to go back. I don't think we can before the end of the year, but this is something we must most definitely plan for next year.

Pulp cover for #Noirvember

Once upon a time, I used to display a cover from the old pulp magazine Detective Tales and comment on it, as a sort of monthly tradition. I thought this would be something perfect to do for #Noirvember. I decided to go for a stereotypical pulp fiction cover, from the November 1938 edition: a damsel in distress, a hero and a few villains in a dramatic action scene. The setting is what appears to be an exotic temple or palace. The damsel in distress is a blonde, gagged but curiously not tied up. There is a henchman holding her and towering over them what appears to be the leader, all clad in white and sporting a devilish looking goatee. The villains seem to be of Middle Eastern or Asian extraction, and they use old fashioned knives. There are three of them. The hero (private eye?) is already wounded and is fighting the biggest one, a thuggish looking guy with a bloody curved knife. Things are grim for the good guys. I wish I could find the story linked to that image, if there is one.

Ouzo and the Greek Connection

Tonight (well, yesterday technically) was the anniversary of my meeting with the woman who was going to become my wife. You can read the story of that moment here and here. Every year I celebrate by eating a mince pie (read the posts for more details). But I was wondering if I should not vary the celebration and drink a shot of ouzo instead. Not that I am a big fan of ouzo, in fact I don't remember its taste much but from what I remember it just tasted like a strong alcohol tastes. But that night, we went to a Greek party with our common Greek friends, a group I used to call the Greek Connection and we drank a bit of ouzo then. It might have been the very last time I drank ouzo. I remember trying some before, but not after. Or maybe my memory is all muddled up. We do not see the Greek Connection anymore, except through social media, but we do miss them and we are ever grateful for making us meet. So maybe one day we might just drink a bit of ouzo at their health and ours.

Ciné-cadeau: l'horraire officiel

See Rome (and die?)

Today is the 25th anniversary of the death of Anthony Burgess, my favourite writer. I blogged about him yesterday. I do it again today, given the anniversary. I wrote last year a full blog post about when I learned of his death, which I suggest you read. Today I still blog about this novel and Burgess' report with Rome, which is an ambiguous and paradoxical one. The video below illustrates this very well, in his own words. He died in London, but I suspect his spirit to haunt Rome (metaphorically of course). Since I have started re-reading Beard's Roman Women, I have been wanting to visit Rome even more. Although not to die there, or afterwards.

Rome in the Rain

As it will soon be the 25th anniversary of the death of Anthony Burgess, I have been rereading Beard’s Roman Women. One of his lesser known novels, but one of my favourite, in spite of having a rubbish title. Rome in the Rain, as Burgess would have preferred it, and which is the title used in most of its translations, is far better. In it, scriptwriter and new widower Ronald Beard is trying to rebuilt his life in Rome with his new, younger, Italian (and thus exotic) lover Paola, while (possibly) haunted by (the ghost of) his first wife Leonora. It’s a modern day telling of the myth of Orpheus, with literary references to Mary Shelley and her Frankenstein, Byron, the Holy Grail, and a lot of other things. It is a short novel that is nevertheless very dense. At its centre there is Rome, the ever decadent city that is also a gate to the Underworld as well as the crossroads where all civilisations join, clash and die.

Dealing with English winters

My wife has a Canadian friend, or rather acquaintance as they are not very close, a mother of twins who is married to a Brit. A few weeks ago, we were discussing the coming winter and our attitude as people from a country famous for its harsh winters living in a country that is famous for being wet all year round. She said that she felt pathetic here, as she is always cold during winter and wear heavy clothes. It struck me that I do the same. I blame the poorly isolated buildings and the humidity, which is far more difficult to deal with than the cold and dry winters I grew up in. English winters, in other words, are not so easy to deal with as one would think, even for Canadians (or Quebeckers, for that matter).

Clementines at last!

At last! I had been waiting for them and desperately seeking them in fact, and finally here they are, they have arrived, they have clementines in M&S! So I bought these yesterday, two packs to make sure we won't be out of stock (Wolfie is also quite fond of clementines). I have no idea why it took me so long to get my hands on them this year. November is not November without them, or at least November is a very depressing month without clementines to brighten it up.

Marlowe and Mozart

I am finishing The Little Sister by Raymond Chandler, which features private eye and cynical hero Philip Marlowe. In one chapter, he is held in police custody and discusses with the police officer about... Mozart. The policeman plays piano in his spare time and is actually a Mozart aficionado. Here is what he says about the composer: "You'd be surprised how difficult some of that Mozart is. (...) It sounds so simple when you hear it played well." And then: "Mozart is just music. No comment needed from the performer." And Marlowe observes in his narration: "You could see he was a man who loved to move his hands, to make little neat inconspicuous motions with them, motions without any special meaning, but smooth and flowing and light as swansdown. They gave him a feel of delicate things delicately done, but not weak. Mozart, all right. I could see that." Marlowe got Mozart in a nutshell.

"Ruibitt, ruibitt!"

Is winter at the corner?

I have been wondering about it and hoping for it. It has been fairly mild these last few days, after a beginning of the month that was fairly cold, nevertheless the nights do get quite cold. And there is sometimes that faint smell of snow, or the air smells like it does when it is about to snow. I have been wearing thick jumpers and fleeces and it feels great, especially when temperatures drop at night. They are forecasting colder days next week. Not enough to snow, but enough to feel that winter is on its way. Maybe it is wishful thinking.

What's in an ale

I recently drank as my evening's poison a pint of Boon Doggle from Ringwood Brewery, a microbrewery I have been rediscovering recently. I must confess, I first chose it for the label, which I always loved: they have a boar on it and that is very cool. I generally prefer darker beers, but for a blonde, this one is pretty dark, for one, and it has flavour as well. Anyway, I didn't know this particular Ringwood ale. I shared this picture on Facebook (because yes, I am sometimes shallow enough to take pictures of my drinks and share them on Facebook). The wife of one of my wife's cousin commented on it, saying that she and her husband had visited the brewery when they had started dating. She also added that the Old Thumper is good (and incidentally it is my favourite of all Ringwood products). The morals of this seemingly trivial anecdote are the following: 1)the picture of an beer can have an emotional impact and bring memories and 2)some women actually like beer. I knew it already, but I still find it surprising.

Question existentielle (337)

"There's a Rang-Tan in my bedroom"

You probably all know now about that Greenpeace advert against palm oil that has been banned for being apparently too political, with a cute orangutan and a cute exotic little girl voiced by Emma Thompson. The advert has gone viral. While I understand nothing is as simple as it seems when it comes to palm oil, because the advert talks about the very real issue of deforestation that has terrible consequences and because the advert in itself is so darn cute, I will share it here.

Ça me sidère littéralement.

#Noirvember

I blogged recently about #Noirvember, this hashtag I discovered at random on Twitter. From what I understand, it is mostly about film noir and crime movies, although it can be extended, again from what I understand, into crime fiction in different mediums. i read crime fiction all year round, but generally I read more of it in November. It is a way for me to get over the post-Halloween blues and to read something that fits the gloom of the month. So it struck me, when I read about #Noirvember that it is something I do already, for one, and that making it a proper, official tradition, by reading and watching crime dramas, by talking about it here on this blog throughout the month, that it would finally make me appreciate the month of November from start to finish, would make me look forward to it even. November is dark and gloomy to begin with, why not embrace it? So bring on #Noirvember!

Figurines bretonnes

100 years of World War I

As you most likely all know (or I sure hope so), today is the 11th of November, thus Remembrance Day and it is also the 100th year anniversary of the end of World War I. That day of the year when I struggle to keep a poppy on, to reduce something very solemn to something very trivial. To commemorate this very important anniversary, I have decided to upload with this post this poppy made by my wife and my son in his art class recently. A large paper poppy on display in the house in a pot, it is far better than wearing it and losing it due to my ineptitude to use a pin. Anyway, this is my way of commemorating. For a thoughtful post about war and the sacrifices of men and women who fought in it, please read this post from 2008. As for WWI itself, I have little to say about it that is really profound and I don't like spouting commonplaces if I can avoid it. I will just say here that it was meant to be the last.

The Orient Express (by LGB)

I found a few years ago this picture of the Orient Express by LGB. The model trains we have in our family home are all LGBs. My father often told my brothers and I of the limited edition wagon of the Orient Express he once saw in a shop of Quebec City, and regretted to this day not to buy. I don't know if this is the limited edition, but it is a gorgeous model and I wish I could buy it. Trains have been the fuel of my imagination since I was a young child, thanks to the LGB train we grew up with. Trains were an important part of our make belief games, as settings as well as a mean of transport. The Orient Express, due to its iconic and legendary status, which I was already aware of (read this post for more details), was on my mind a lot when I imagined our heroic alter egos living adventures on the railway. So I wish we have had at least one wagon of it.

"Brownettone"

Is it too early to think about Christmas and thus to blog about Christmas stuff? I tend to think so, yet I will do it right now. Because, for my wife's birthday, we went to Zizzi, a restaurant I don't like much generally, but this time the food was decent enough. They already had their Christmas menu, and in their dessert a hybrid between the brownie and the traditional Italian  panettone, the "brownettone". I thought it was an intriguing mix, so I ordered one. It tasted weird, but it was a nice mix overall, with the chocolate sauce and the moist of the brownie counterbalancing the dryness of the panettone. And I loved the chocolate pine cone on top. Anyway, so this was my first Christmas experience this year.

#Noirvember: time for crime (fiction)

When November comes, I change my reading genre and go from horror to crime fiction (which is actually the main genre I read all year round). This is nothing new for the month, or at least nothing unique: I learned on Twitter that there is a hashtag for it: #Noirvember. I am currently reading The Little Sister by Raymond Chandler, which features legendary private eye Philip Marlowe. I was in the mood for a good old fashioned hard-boiled thriller and I want to be up to date with the crime classics (as I am not, to my great shame). What I love about Chandler, it is how he slowly builds the settings and characters to create atmosphere and suspense. I might blog more about it, until then if you have any crime read suggestions for #Noirvember, please let me know in the comments.

RIP Bernard Landry

Ça m'a attristé.

Buckets of new/old toys coming our way?

My wife's brother phone her today to wish her a happy birthday and to tell her that we should meet soon. He is certainly right about this, as a meeting is long overdue. Of course, they also talked about little Wolfie, as this is the case when one is a parent, especially of a young child: birthdays are all about children, even when they are not the ones being celebrated. I don't mind, in fact I appreciate far more birthday parties with our little naughty boy than before him. He brings a healthy dose of mischief (say by grabbing a piece of birthday cake before the cutting) that just makes birthdays fun. Wolfie is the gift that keeps giving.

But anyway, my brother-in-law mentioned also that they have loads of toys our niece does not need anymore, so they had the intention to ship them all in our next meeting. And I am not sure I am happy with this. We have very little room for more toys, for one, and it's not like our son is not already spoiled with truckloads of toys of all sorts. Not to mention books, plush animals and so on. He's all right, toy wise, and Christmas will come soon enough, so he will have plenty more. I know my brother-in-law means well and I know he wants to be the cool uncle who gives Wolfie lots of cool things that Wolfie will hopefully remember fondly when he is a grown man himself, but I can't help thinking he also thinks (subconsciously) that this is a good opportunity to declutter some space in his house.

Chaise rustique

5 days weekend

Tonight is the start of a five days weekend, as I took three days off to celebrate my wife's birthday. So I had a very short week at work, only two days. I needed that, as the last real time off I've had was in August. It will only be a staycation, but I need rest more than anything else. It will also be binging time: binge watch of TV series and movies, binge read, mostly. Hopefully this will also give me some blogging inspiration in a time when I am generally less inspired.

Bonfire Night

Tonight is Bonfire Night, as in "remember, remember, the 5th of November..." and I'm sure you know the rest. Well, it cannot be easily forgotten: there has been fireworks nonstop every night since the beginning of the month and it has scared our little Wolfie. This year, I will be glad when this night will be over and I hope not to hear any fireworks until the New Year. Even though I like fireworks and love bonfires, especially the smell of the smoke in the cold November air. The smell of bonfire smoke is actually what I prefer of this night. If it was only of me, I would ditch the fireworks and just keep the bonfires. It's called Bonfire Night after all.

The autumn jumper

I don't care one bit about fashion: a lot of the clothes I have are at least a decade old and I have no problem wearing them until they fall apart, because I find old clothes comfier and I don't care one bit about fashion. Which sometimes irks my wife: she would like her husband to wear things that are a bit more up to date and a lot more colourful. Because a lot of what I wear is dark blue, charcoal grey, blue-grey, olive green (her most hated colour) or black. So she was very happy to find this jumper from White Stuff, which she thought would appeal to me because 1)it has the same kind of cut of many of the stuff I wear and 2)with its fiery orange colour, it looks very autumnal. My wife knows me well and knows how to sell me something. I did not take much convincing: autumnal colours, cosy and warm, discount available, plus a free mug that also looks like an autumn mug, I bought it yesterday. It is now my new official autumn jumper.

A tree house nearby

As we were walking to town earlier today, we saw a few young boys, around 7-10, in a pathway between two rows of houses that was surrounded by trees. The children were playing with branches that had fallen down and were trying to set them together as some kind of rough habitation. One said hello to us, and the other proudly told us that they were making a house. I told them that it was a very cool idea. It kind of reminded me of the tree houses we used to play in when we were kids. I say this, and I can only remember of one proper tree house I have been in, and even then, it was mostly a shack roughly made of pieces of poor quality wood. On the ground, by the trees, not in the trees. In my cousins' home garden. we also did try to make some of encampment at home near trees, it never really worked, but the intention was there. They were really good meeting places for secret clubs and imaginary headquarters for our make belief games. Anyway, I am happy to see some kids building such tree house and I look forward to see the result, however sketchy. It gave me my daily moment of nostalgia.

Space Raiders

Sometimes I do enjoy some bad stuff, whether it is food or counterculture. And this is why, stopping at the corner shop near work one day, the packs of Space Raiders caught my attention. It's a corn and what based snack that apparently has been in circulation for the last thirty years or so. With the grey type alien face on the package that is a call back to the old B scifi movies, and its very cheap price of 25p, I had to try it. I actually tried every flavour I think. They all taste absolutely vile, but in a very enjoyable way. Like a snack named after aliens from outer space and looking like the head of said aliens would taste. But I'd still eat it. Heck, I will eat it just for that head on the bag.

Premiers feux d'artifice

Here it is: the post-Halloween blues

It happens every time, after the exhilaration: comes the first of November and I have the post-Halloween blues. Whatever I do, start getting into the seasonal mood from August onward, it still strikes me come November. I will try to fight it the best I can and there are at least a few reasons to enjoy November, at least now:

-It is still autumn.
-It is going to be my wife's birthday soon. A reason to celebrate in a month that generally does not have many occasions for celebration, but also to spoil her rotten. Being outnumbered in the household is not easy for her all the time and she thoroughly deserves the extra TLC she will receive from Wolfie and I.
-I am going to have three days of holidays soon, so will be able to spend time with my family. It will only be a staycation, but sometimes this is what I need.

So Halloween is gone, I am melancholic, but at least I have a few things to look forward to.
