It's clementime!

One thing I love when November comes, it's that clementines are at their best. Or start being at their best, I eat them ravenously between November and December. So I associate clementines strongly with these two month, enough so I call it clementime (atrocious pun, I know, but cute). I bought these at Lidl, where I was happily surprised to see they sold them in boxes, like we have in Montreal. They should go in no time and I will buy some more. They make for an easy, healthy snack and they smell good too.

Buck's Fizz with a twist

This may be my last Christmas post until next year (and I may add: at the end of 2022). So anyway, you may know about Buck's Fizz, the Briths cocktail made of orange juice and champagne, or fizzy wine. Two parts champagne, one part orange juice. My wife is quite fond of it, especially during the Christmas holidays. Well, M&S made one for the Season, with clementine and cranberry instead of orange juice. It is much, much sweeter, so much so that you don't really taste the alcohol. I find it quite treacherous and not that great, but it does have a festive colour. It has been my wife's poison during the whole Christmas holidays. But, as she is not a big drinker (a few sips and she is done), I had to finish her cups. I can't say I was very enthusiastic. It is truly too sweet.

It's clementime!

Sorry for the atrocious pun, but I thought it would make for a remarkable title. I haven't blogged yet about clementines, and I thought I had to before the end of November. It is one thing I always loved about the month, even when I did not like the month much. I have been eating clementines and sharing them with Wolfie (well of course, he loves them as much as I do) since the beginning of November. It's a great source of vitamins C and they taste delicious. For a full post on why I love them, please read this one from 2011. I bought these ones at Morrison's. Not my favourite, but they it's kind of nice to have thhe leaves still on. And you, do you eat clementines this time of year?

Clementines at last!

At last! I had been waiting for them and desperately seeking them in fact, and finally here they are, they have arrived, they have clementines in M&S! So I bought these yesterday, two packs to make sure we won't be out of stock (Wolfie is also quite fond of clementines). I have no idea why it took me so long to get my hands on them this year. November is not November without them, or at least November is a very depressing month without clementines to brighten it up.

Ça me sidère littéralement.

Clementime!

I do this lousy word play every year or almost, but it is important for me to remind everyone, at the beginning of this dreary month that is November, that the clementines are available and at their best. Little balls of citrus sunshine smelling delicious and an excellent source of vitamin C. It takes two clementines to make one portion of your five a day. I bought these ones at Marks & Spencer, like I do every year, as I think they have the best ones. I do miss the big boxes I used to buy in Montreal, but there you go. I had my first two clementines a few minutes ago and I can still smell their perfume on my fingers.

The fruits for July

Today was/is the first Tuesday of the month. This means that the fruit baskets were back at work. I am really getting fond of this monthly ritual, which started in February. It gives me much needed fruits to make my breakfast complete and it brightens my day. Anecdote: I just discovered (by actually paying attention to the label on the basket) that the company that provided the fruit is Fruitful Office. For July we did not have pears, but there were nectarines and clementines added to the usual bananas and apples mix. I didn't have clementines because I find it too out of season in July (I start eating them on November). I took a green apple and a banana, ate the green apple and brought the banana home. The banana is a bit raw still, but I will have it tonight. And I am already looking forward to next month.

Clementime!

I know, I know, what a lousy word play, and not even a new one: I used it two years ago. But, it is this time of year when clementines are available. The fruit that is my main source of vitamins C until Christmas. I love clementines, everything about them really. It is one of the few things I look forward to about November, the thing that makes me forget of the greyness and austerity of this dreary month, it makes me patient until the holidays, which I consider clementines to be one of its earliest signs. I love the color and its smell, it has something both soothing and energizing. Oh and its taste! Nothing can beat it. I bought this box at Marks & Spencer. More for the look it would have on the blog than anything else: there are not many clementines in it. In Montreal, I used to buy proper wooden boxes full of them.

Clementime!

This is a really lousy word play, but I had to write it as this post's title. I blogged about clementines before, last time was exactly a year ago. It was not intentional, I am just a desperatly predictable blogger. Clementines are my treat for the weeks leading to Christmas, one of my ways to gradually get into the spirit of the season. I don't start eating them before November and I don't eat them after December. I have two every evening, listening to music. So in sum, it is clementime and I encourage my readership to eat some. Have some vitamin C in a time when we all need it. And, as I blogged last year it tastes, smells and looks lovely. It brings colour to the grey days of November.

The perfume, colour and taste of clementines

As I am typing this, my fingers smell of the clementines I just had. I try to have two every evening, after dinner and before bed. I blogged about them before, but not in English. Not for a whole post anyway. I love clementines since, well, since forever, or at least childhood. I have them from early November until Christmas, when they are in season, and for me it is the citrus fruit I associate most with Christmas. Back in Montreal, I used to buy a whole box of them, which was just as cheap as buying a bag here. It used to last me from early November until Christmas, although sometimes I had to buy a second box. England has no idea of abundance when it comes to clementines, which is a shame in the country that popularised marmalade.

There are many reasons why I love them. Their bright colours bring some warmt to the grey month that is November, they are delicious and often they don't have pips, you can easily peel them with the hands and they smell oh so nice. They also give plenty of Vitamin C, which one needs in the winter weeks ahead. Unlike most of its cousins, I prefer clementines unchanged. Oranges I prefer to drink the juice or have them in marmalade, grapefruit (another seasonal favourite from my childhood) I need to cover with sugar (my father can actually eat it... like an orange), but clementines I have like this.

Getting into the festive spirit

I am trying to make the best of the situation. The worst is over, I am comfortable at home and ironically now that I am stuck here the snow is going. But hopefully there will still be some left at Christmas. After messing up my trip home, that is the least I could expect. But I am getting in the spirit. Which now means:

-Reading. I have at last time to read. I will try to finish that book on Viking mythology, as I associate Norse mythology with Christmas. There is also this book which is about Christmases in Québec.
-Listening to Christmas carols. I got pretty much all my family's discography on an USB port. Hopefully it will help me cope with the homesickness.
-Cooking. I will try to make a yule log and will make some cranberry sauce. Maybe make some mulled wine too.
-Eat clementines.I associate them a lot with Christmas.
-Increase my alcohol intake. Well, this has already started. I notice that I usually drink a lot more during Christmastime, when I am at home with my family. I don't get drunk or anything (well, not anymore), but I do drink more. Once a year, I think I can do this.
