A haunted library

No, no, I am not being serious with my title, but I thought it would make for a good click bait. I was walking by our local library last Saturday with little Wolfie, it was late in the afternoon and it had closed down for the day. It just looked very, very empty, yet as if from the large windows someone or something was observing its surroundings. With the wind blowing and the clouds above, the building had an unsettling aura. In sum, it looked every bit like a haunted library. It is a small one, but there is definitely enough room for a ghost to dwell in. They don't need much space anyway. So I just thought about it looking at it and taking this picture. Soon enough, I will start reading horror stories to put myself in a Halloween mood. I read a few ghost stories set in libraries, but I think maybe I should work on my own ghost story, where this library is haunted.

Bleuets sauvages

Back to School in July?

I blogged before about Tinc, the chain of stationary shops full of cool designs, but that often irritates me when they start advertising the time before getting back to school. You know, when you, or rather your parents, must start stationary and stuff. Well, they surpassed themselves as they have already started advertising it! In July! The end of July, but still. So yesterday, I saw this board in the local shop's window. "Stay cool. Back to School." And school has barely been over. This always makes me feel melancholic, but also furious. If I had been a British kid, I would have thrown a brick at that window. Okay, maybe not that far, but can they just leave the kids alone?

A promise of autumn?

These last two or three days have been much cooler than before. Nothing to shiver, but in the lower 20s, which is a sharp contrast to the heatwave we have had recently. It also started raining a fair deal. Yesterday we had strong enough wind to feel a bit of a shiver in the morning and in the afternoon. It gave the air a slight autumnal smell. I know summer is far from over and more heat is meant to come. But yesterday, walking outside with Wolfie, I just thought it felt like the start of autumn. As it is clearly not, and autumn is still very far away, I can only hope that this was a promise of a coming autumn that will be stark contrast with our current summer.

Revoir Dartmouth

New Pelecanos coming

I learned this recently: George Pelecanos will finally publish another book, coming this September! It is about time. I had read all his books and I have been wanting more for the last two years or so. The upcoming novel is titled The Man Who Came Uptown and I can barely wait. Reading the description on its Amazon page, I am already very excited: a former convict turned avid reader free in a world he no longer recognize. Only Pelecanos could come with something like this, gritty and dark yet very human and full of heart. It is going to be a long wait.

Mafalda, Guille et... Brigitte Bardot

Thistles

I took this picture yesterday in a street near my working place, during my lunch break walk. At the moment I had no idea why I got suddenly all fascinated by this bunch of thistles. It is a symbol of Scotland, it is also on the flag of Montreal, which might explain my interest a bit. But thistles are also for me related to a few childhood memories: we had plenty of them where I was growing up, we used to call them "piquants" (spikies) and they stuck to our clothes and were, well, spiky and itchy. When I was 12 or 13, a friend of mine once threw a couple down the back of my shirt as a joke, it spoiled our friendship for weeks. I guess these thistles triggered all these memories.

Knife attacks in town

Something happened recently to the cousin of one of my wife's friends, and it happened in the center of our quiet little town. I don't know the details, but basically some thug threatened the cousin and his friends with a knife. There has been an increase of knife attacks in town recently, this is only one of them. In fact it is not even a knife attack, it's "only" a threat (for an attack there has to be movement). After learning about this, and other violent incidents, I am glad I learned Krav Maga. Defense against knife attacks is something we practiced over and over again, because they are very frequent. I recommended to my wife's friend that she should look for a KM club nearby to learn the Israeli self-defense system herself (and her cousin with her). I have also started thinking that I should get back into training.

Question existentielle (331)

Following the railway

When in doubt, blog about what you like. This is what I told myself after blogging my post from yesterday. And train travel is one of the things I love. Recently, I have been feeling a bit down and out, so I thought to get rid of this feeling of dread I need to think of things to look forward to, like my next holiday and our next train travel as a family. The latter might only happen when we are on holiday, or it may happen earlier (unlikely but not impossible). I love everything about train journeys, especially long ones done for leisure: the moment of excitement when you buy the tickets, the wait (as long as it is not too long), the time spent in watching the outside world or reading or talking. It is a bit more challenging traveling with Wolfie: he is scared of big trains coming and he can get restless in the train itself. But I think he already finds railway travels exciting.

And if you were wondering, I took this picture at the National Railway Museum in York, my favourite museum in the world.

Blogging torpor?

I try to blog every day, as you can probably tell. I rarely miss a day of blogging. It is an objective I set myself a long time ago, when I started this blog back in 2008 when I was unemployed: I would keep it active every day. Its officious motto is "Nulla dies sine linea" (No day without a line). This is a line attributed to Apelles, which I had already mentioned in 2011. I do this because blogging for me is a creative exercise and I want my brain to remain creative. That said, recently, it has become more difficult to stay inspired. It is not time I lack, although I have little of it being a father. It is energy and inspiration. I am fatigued and so is Vraie Fiction. So I am wondering if I should not go slower and take breaks a day or two. Although for some reason I find this option depressing.

Batman and Wolfie

I cannot remember when I first read a Batman comics, but I do remember looking at a Batman figure in a catalogue when I was a very young child, and already knowing he was great. He pretty much became my favourite superhero right then. I think something similar happened to little Wolfie. We recently bought him the Fisher-Price DC Batman Ride On and it is now is favourite toy ever. Like his own Batmobile. It might be the toy more than the character, but I do think little boys are instinctively attracted to the Dark Knight. Anyway, I have a feeling Batman will be Wolfie's favourite superhero.

O Mistress Mine...

It is Sunday evening, the weekend is ending, which always makes me a bit melancholic. What about you? Anyway, to embrace the melancholy, I thought to share a song written by William Shakespeare for his Twelfth Night. It is O Mistress mine where are you roaming?. Sung here in the 1996 movie adaptation by Ben Kingsley. Okay, so it has nothing to do with weekends or Sundays, but it is very sweet and full of longing and it fits melancholic Sunday nights perfectly.

The Hound of the Baskervilles

Tonight's reading suggestion is an oldie but a goodie: The Hound of the Baskervilles by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The first Sherlock Holmes novel (but not story) I read and a case of first love for me. A crime fiction story that takes the guise for a moment of a supernatural one, based on old British legends of hell hounds. Sherlock Holmes is hired to investigate on the death of Charles Baskerville and protect Sir Henry Baskerville, last heir of the family. The former having seemingly been victim of and the latter being seemingly threatened by an old family curse that takes the form of a devilish hound. Most of the story is set in the Devon moorland (read it in Devonshire for extra enjoyment) that could well be haunted, but the resolution is perfectly rational (if a bit far fetched). It's a detection novel, but it has plenty of atmosphere, suspense and characters that are actually pretty developed for the genre.

Hotel California

My brother Andrew and his girlfriend are on holidays in the USA at the moment and will be, if they are not already, in California, to see my other brother PJ. So for them, I am sharing today Hotel California by The Eagles. For me it is THE song about the state. I always loved it, in spite or because of its vaguely sinister (and totally undeserved) reputation.

Baklavas

I blogged about a week ago about the food festival that was in our local town. There were lots of stands selling lots of delicious stuff, including one selling baklavas. I have a soft spot for baklavas since I'm a little boy. I wanted to try everything Greek, being into mythology, I ate one of those (I think it was in Montreal), got hooked on it since. I rarely think of buying any, but I got really enthusiastic at the festival and had a box full of them, which I finished in about five days. Baklavas are one of these things I love about Greek culture, after its mythology (and I know it might not even be Greek, but I associate it with Greece). It's full of sugar and it has some nuts to make it healthy. Honest. Moral of the story: I have a sweet tooth.

Exotic camel

It has been two months today that the family went to the London Zoo, to visit it with a childhood friend of my wife (the oldest friend she has) and her son. I haven't shared that many pictures of our time there and I thought I would share one now. I don't know what sort of camel it is, whether it is from Africa or Asia or what have you, but I thought it was a very impressive, not sure why. Maybe because I find camels very exotic. Looking at this one, I was no longer in a zoo but in a far away desert. It helped that it was a boiling hot day like we have been having the last few weeks. But maybe I would have had that feeling any other day.

Our neighbours the hedgehogs

My wife and Wolfie went recently in a rescue centre for wild animals (the reason why is another story) and she took some pictures of some of the lodgers there, including this hedgehog. There are quite a few hedgehogs in our neighbourhood and others like ours all around England and apparently they haven't had an easy time. The recent heatwave, among other things, has even been fatal to many of them. So we decided to do our share to protect them and we have placed a bowl of water outside the house. You can find out more on how to help hedgehogs here. I suggest you do, as they are quite cute.

Counting days now

We will go on holidays in a few weeks, to see Wolfie's grandparents on his mother's side. In a few weeks, so not any time soon, yet I am already counting days. We haven't had a proper holiday since last Christmas, apart from the odd bank holiday here and there. And I have been needing time off. We all have. I often feel tired and a bit dispirited these days. Nothing dramatic, just a general fatigue and boredom. The heat does not help. So I have started counting days and I am trying to find ways to cope with the wait.

Cuba Libre!

Yesterday, we went into a pub that was more like a club/bar, so it had little to know interesting beers, only lagers. After quickly drinking half a pint of some tasteless Spanish beer, it struck me that I might as well have a proper cocktail, something that would be suitable for a hot summer day. So I went for a Cuba Libre. I know it as a Rum and Coke, but I prefer its more exotic and evocative name. I cannot remember the last time I had one, if I ever did have one. It was not even listed among the choice of cocktails in the bar menu, so the barman gave me a price on the spot (five pounds, the others were all between seven and eight). I only asked for one shot of rum, but I think he poured a bit more. What to think of this Rum and Coke? It tasted like a diluted, boozed up Coca Cola. The taste is all right, nothing outstanding, but it is very refreshing. this one was anyway. I might add it to my list of summer drinks.

Next time in the bookshop

It has been nearly a month since I have been to the local bookshop and I have not spend yet the voucher I had earned. I walked in front of it at least twice recently, but we had other things to do, so did not have time to stop. I would rather go there when I have plenty of free time to spend there, so I can explore the bookshelves at leisure and find the book I need. I say need because when you discover a book you want... you know you now need it. So anyway, I need to plan my next visit to the local bookshop and go there soon, because it will have been at least a month when I go there and it's long overdue.

A yellow summer

I don't like mowing the lawn, but I won't have to do it for a while. Because although we no longer have a heatwave, it is still a hot summer and there has been no rain for the last two or three weeks at least. So the grass everywhere is withered and yellow, dry like... like dry grass? It looks horrid really, like some kind of sick savanna. Summer this year is not green, it is yellow. I must confess, I am starting to wish for rain and cooler days.

A taste of the Balkans

There is a food festival in the main park of our little town, and thankfully the weather is actually bearable now (still too dry, but not too hot anymore), so we went there yesterday for dinner. There was a stand that was serving food from the Balkans, we thought it was very original so we decided to try it. My wife had a veggie wrap with halloumi, I tried one with cevapi, a sort of skinless sausage made of mince beef and pork. There was also some cabbage and onion in it and some mint yugurt. It was the first time ever I tried Balkanic food and while it was not outstanding it was quite pleasant, if only because of its exoticism. Maybe there is nothing truly authentic there, but I felt like I was eating something from southeastern Europe.

Blonde Tickler has a boyfriend (!)

My wife learned it today from Blonde Tickler's mother: she has a boyfriend. I was expecting it to happen, sooner or later, but not so early. Not so long ago, she thought boys were gross. Anyway, here are the news I learned:

-The boyfriend looks a bit like her and is apparently quite geeky.
-Brunette Tickler is feeling abandoned.
-Blonde Tickler is finding it hard at school: she is being teased by other pupils who call her fat (she is a bit chubby), so I guess she finds comforting that a boy finds her attractive.
-We are not supposed to know. In fact only her mother is officially in the known.

Not sure what to think of it now. I am sad for Brunette Tickler as she must feel really alone. At 12, I find it very early for Blonde Tickler to have a boyfriend. Although he seems nice from what we have been told. But is it just me or are things happening way too fast?

The Halloween Train

I just could not wait until October to blog about this: LGB has in its new Summer (!) catalogue a Halloween train! Or, as it is called, a "Halloween Gang Car". How cool is that? I wonder why they don't wait a bit to put it on sale, but I guess they want it sold for the upcoming season. In any case, it is so gorgeous and spooky. I really, really, really want to have it! Even though I don't have a railway to run it. This is such a perfect Halloween item, especially for a train lover. Maybe I should buy it before it gets sold out.

A new evening with Don Giovanni

As my long time reader knows, I love Don Giovanni by Mozart. It is my favourite opera, and I think maybe the greatest opera there is. Although sometimes I wonder if Cosi fan tutte is superior, Don Giovanni remains my first Mozartian love and thus it has a special place in my heart. So anyway, I learned that the Royal Opera House is not only showing it, but that there will be a live performance on the evening of the 12th of July, at 7:00PM available for free on YouTube. So my evening tomorrow is sorted out, as long as little Wolfie does not struggle too much to sleep. If I can watch it, I will of course blog more about it. Until then, here is a promotional video:

Amy the shy black cat

I blogged before about Amy, the black cat who belongs to an elderly couple on our street. She is a friend of Domino, to our knowledge the only fellow feline Domino ever accepted as a friend. Back when we were living in our old neighbourhood, Domino was rather hostile towards other cats, something growling, sometimes hissing, never going into a fight as far as we could tell, but jealous of his territory and of his humans. Not so with Amy: if at first they were wary of each other, he now visits her place regularly. And she would do the same, if it was not for her shyness. At least twice we met her at the door, with imploring eyes, as if asking if Domi could come out to play (he was already out). Once, she entered our home (I let her) and went straight up the stairs, to run away immediately. Maybe she confused her house with ours. In any case, she never dared to cross the threshold afterwards. I think she is a bit scared of us.

From the last to the first page

So I recently finished this book. Like for every book I enjoy, finishing it is difficult. Then one has to start a new one, which is always quite exciting. I often don't start the new book right after finishing one. If I can, I wait for a day. I read things I started in between, like poetry or some books of short stories (there is always one of those somewhere I started but haven't finished yet). Or I read bits of a book I read ages ago, just for fun. But I try not to start a new novel after just finishing one. It is my way of saying farewell to the fictitious world I have been exploring. And you, how do you go from the last page to the first one?

Circe, the autobiography

As I have finally finished it, here is today's reading suggestion: Circe by Madeline Miller. An autobiography of the minor goddess and the world's first witch. Veggie Carrie bought it for me on my birthday. I rarely read a novel published in the year if it's not crime fiction but I've always been into Greek mythology. And I was pleasantly surprised with Circe. Modernisation of old myths often end up to be glorified fanfics, but this one has heart. Miller gave Greek gods and heroes character and complexity. I particularly liked her take on Hermes and Odysseus. Less so with Athena, but I am a big fan of the goddess and she is in this novel more antagonistic, so this is a completely subjective criticism. Inn any case, Miller understands the dubious moral nature of Greek mythology and does not fall into cheap Manichean narrative. And she also uses Greek names, not Roman ones. During a summer heatwave, you can't go wrong going Greek.

It's coming home

Today, England's football team won against Sweden, which means they are going into the semi-finals of the World Cup. I did not watch, as I don't like football. That said, I cannot help but feel a tingle of excitement about what's happening. It is a surprise to myself. I say I don't like football, a more accurate description would be that it bores me to tears. I always felt indifferent towards it and England has been rubbish for decades, which did not help it one bit: why should I care what happens if my country of adoption can't win at the sport she invented? The only thing I could do is tease my wife. This year it's different: England is actually good, they are is actually winning, they have a fair shot at becoming champions. I cannot tease my wife anymore. And I have a young child, far too young to be interested about football, but who likely will when he will be older. Add to this that my godson is a huge football fan and is following the World Cup religiously. So I'm happy for all of them and all that World Cup nonsense is getting to me... A bit. Not enough to watch a game, but enough to just be glad of the score. So anyway, I decided to share this song I heard today, from a band I had never heard of before. It's called Three Lions, from The Lightning Seeds. But it is better known for its lyric "It's coming home". It's kinda catchy.

Notre petit loup artiste

A Smuggler for summer

I blogged before about the Smuggler from Rebellion Beer. I am a real ale drinker and I prefer my beer dark, so this ale is the one I favour during summertime, although it is available all year round. I explained my reasons in this post. I also love the label: the smuggler on it could easily be a pirate and summertime is one that always remind of piracy. I took this pint of Smuggler in a local pub and while I enjoyed it as I always do, it gave me a bit of a headache. I overestimated my stamina against the current heatwave. I must confess, a blonde beer is easier to drink when the outdoor temperature is like a oven. I guess the Smuggler would ideally be drunk on a rainy day. Which may not happen any time soon.

Besoin d'eau

What's in a uniform

I took this picture at the National Railway Museum in York and I am using it here as it illustrates this post's topic. I don't know who was wearing it in the trains or the train stations of old, but it certainly gave an aura of authority and competence to whoever was wearing it. It is almost military looking. I was thinking about it when we went last week to Armed Forces Day (albeit very briefly): what fascinated me about the army when I was a child was mainly that: the officers' uniforms. And their shining stuff, their elegant cut. It is as if we instinctively know this set the person wearing it in a special category of people. I wanted to wear one. Sometimes I wished, even now as an adult, that I had a job that required to wear such uniform. Not just any: one dark and with golden insignias. But I am not cut for army life, and I cannot picture myself working in a train, even though I love trains. And as I said, train workers don't wear these kinds of uniforms anymore anyway.

Now is the summer of our discontent

Allow me to paraphrase Shakespeare on such trivial a topic, but this is exactly how I and many of us feel. Like in many other parts of the globe, the UK have had for the last week or so very hot and very dry weather. It is in fact scorching hot. Maybe not as bad as June 2017, at least the evenings cool down a little bit sometimes (but only sometimes) but far too hot and apparently the heatwave should go on for two more weeks at least. The worst might be yet to come. I am really dreading it. Last month, I had wished for summer to stay like it was. My wish has not been granted. I did well to quote Shakespeare: this is tragic irony. Now is the summer of our discontent...

A word from the local bookshop

No I will not blog about the 4th of July and the USA today, I am not in the mood this year so will skip it. This post is about something else. I recently mentioned that I received another £5 voucher form the local bookshop. I thanked them publicly on social media and said I now had to find a book to spend it on. They sent me this kind reply: "Happy choosing. Our favourite kind of dilemma." This is nice of them and their reply deserves to be a new great unknown line. And I am waiting for your suggestions if you have any.

Working anniversary

We are commemorating many anniversaries these days. A year ago, I started my new job. I will say a dreadful cliché: how time flies. I am still getting around my new job. And I still say it's my "new" job, even though I have been there a year and I am no longer the newbie. I never celebrate working anniversaries, don't know why. I guess for me in the end it's just a job. Some people are married to theirs, I'm not. After being made redundant in my previous one and the uncertainties of the ones before, I find it is the best attitude to have. A certain detachment.

Two years of home sweet home

It is two years ago exactly that we moved in our new home, the very first house we bought. We had become officially owners the day before, but we moved in the next day. We have never really celebrated it. Too busy moving our stuff from the old flat to our new house, too busy making the house homely, too busy preparing the arrival of little Wolfie. There was no true house warming party, there probably will not be a celebration tonight. It is strange how such an important step on one's life, becoming home owner, hasn't been that exciting. But we were waiting for Wolfie, that was the big thing that was going to happen, the rest was peripheral. All the same, this is our home sweet home anniversary.

Question existentielle (330)

£5 voucher

My wife thinks I spend too much there, but last week I stopped at the bookshop after running a few errands because I thought I deserved a treat for having done something tedious. I only bought two books, but with the other ones I bought this year, it was enough to earn me a new £5 voucher. My third one this year, if I'm not mistaken. Now I need to find a book to spend it on. Feel free to give me your suggestions in the comments.
