Exotic camel

It has been two months today that the family went to the London Zoo, to visit it with a childhood friend of my wife (the oldest friend she has) and her son. I haven't shared that many pictures of our time there and I thought I would share one now. I don't know what sort of camel it is, whether it is from Africa or Asia or what have you, but I thought it was a very impressive, not sure why. Maybe because I find camels very exotic. Looking at this one, I was no longer in a zoo but in a far away desert. It helped that it was a boiling hot day like we have been having the last few weeks. But maybe I would have had that feeling any other day.

Okapi et l'okapi

Photo prise au Zoo de Londres d'un okapi. C'est la première fois que j'en voyais un en chair et en os. En fait, je ne rappelais même plus qu'il y avait un animal appelé okapi. Pour moi, Okapi est le titre d'un magazine jeunesse. Vous pouvez lire plus de détails sur son histoire ici. Je n'y ai jamais été abonné, mais il était disponible dans ma classe de cinquième année et j'en étais très friand. Je ne me rappelle pas des détails, mais je trouvais ça éducatif sans être racoleur ou moraliste. Enfin selon mes souvenirs. Je passais beaucoup de mes temps libres à le lire. Je n'ai pas beaucoup aimé mes années du primaire, la cinquième peut-être moins que les autres années (et le secondaire encore moins!), mais la lecture d'Okapi fait partie des quelques moments scolaires plaisants que j'ai eus en cinquième.

Un "popotame"

Voici une nouvelle photo prise au zoo de Londres. Vous devez bien sûr avoir reconnu l'animal, le "cheval du fleuve" comme son nom l'indique. C'est un hippopotame nain. Je pense que c'est la première fois que je voyais un hippopotame d'aussi proche. Alors que j'étais tout jeune, à peu près l'âge de mon fils, c'est l'un des mots que j'ai appris, peut-être le premier. Voir ce billet. Mais je disais "popotame" pour faire plus court. Ça avait à la fois impressionné et découragé mes parents. J'ai essayé de faire dire "popotame" à petit loup, mais ça a été peine perdue.

Face to face with a gorilla

We,, not quite, but it was very close. So as you know, we went to the London Zoo yesterday. There was a section for gorillas, which like for many others, we could barely see the inhabitants. There is a passage above the visitors, which is covered with glass and makes any gorilla passing by very visible. So once we just looked above and there he was. At first I thought it was a fake one, like an animatronic gorilla, but no, he started moving and... Well, it gives you a quick fright, yet leaves you in awe. The intelligence you can see in these eyes. I really felt a kinship with apes at that moment.

Walking through London

We are back from London tonight, after a day there. We walked a lot, from the train station to the London Zoo, through Regent's Park, then back to the train station through the city... One word: Ouch! My legs are in pain. They started hurting when we were walking home. And this is not counting the backpack I was carrying, with water, spare nappies and all, which means that my back is also in pain. Although not as much as my feet and legs, which really are killing me as I am typing this. I loved my day out, we had a lovely time, but this hurts so very, very much.

"J'en suis tout émeu"

Nous sommes allés au zoo de Londres aujourd'hui. Le premier animal que nous avons rencontré était un Émeu. Quand je l'ai vu, je n'ai pas pu me retenir de dire: "J'en suis tout émeu". Je sais, c'est vraiment douloureux de lire un calembour atroce de ce degré-là d'ineptitude. Ce n'est même pas un calembour nouveau: j'en avais commis un avec le même volatile en août 2017. Mais les circonstances ont fait que je ne peux pas m'empêcher de le faire subir une autre fois à mon lectorat, qui doit se demander si la fatigue de la journée ne me pousse pas à l'inanité.
