Un ours à Falardeau

Ma cousine Amy l'artiste-photographe est allée au Zoo de Falardeau avec son mari et ses deux enfants il y a quelques jours.Elle m'a gentiment permis de partager les photos qu'elle a prises. C'est vraiment une photographe de talent. J'aime notamment la photo de cet ours grizzly. Il a l'air fatigué.

Panda Babyccino

Sometimes, I go and pick up Wolfie from school by myself, when I have a free afternoon. We go and then stop at one of the local café, where we have a cake or a pastry to eat and something to drink. I drink a tea or a rooibos and he drinks a babyccino. They often make a design on them with the cocoa powder. It's often a panda, like this one. And that's it. It's just quite cute. It never fails to make Wolfie's day.

Ours polaire viennois?

 Photo prise au Zoo de Vienne lors de nos vacances l'an dernier. Je ne tenais pas tant à y aller (au zoo je veux dire). Mais ce fût quand même agréable. Et puis c'est toujours plaisant de voir (notamment) des ours polaires, tant qu'ils ne puissent pas vous atteindre. Je trouve toujours ça un peu surréaliste de voir un animal polaire dans un zoo européen. Je ne sais pas trop pourquoi.

Un ours en "forêt"

J'ai pris cette photo en 2024 à l'Ulster Museum de Belfast. Vous connaissez sans doute ma fascination pour la taxidermie, j'ai donc passé beaucoup de temps à regarder des bêtes empaillées, comme cet ours. Sur ses deux pattes, il a l'air presque vivant et, si on ne voyait pas les angles de la photo d'arrière-plan, on le croirait vraiment en forêt. C'est ce que j'aime aussi des animaux empaillés: avec le bon décor, on se croirait vraiment dans un autre environnement.

Douglas and Douglas Jr (Black Bears)

I don't know if you see them well on this picture, but these are the latest members of Wolfie's ever growing menagerie, bought at a Relay shop in Montreal. Douglas and Douglas Jr, black bears. They are of course father and son. I was not so sure about purchasing them, I suggested to buy just one, but Wolfie was adamant they were father and son and should not be separated. I could not fault this logic. In any case, they kept my son entertained during the flight and since then they barely left his sight when he is at home. For some reason, he got quite fond of them. And I love black bears, so I won't complain.

Ourson de Noël

J'ai acheté cet ourson pour petit loup. En fait non, j'ai acheté une boîte, avec dedans le toutou, la rembourrure pour le toutou, une aiguille, du fil et un manuel d'instructions simples pour le construire. Avec son foulard rouge carreauté, il est supossé être un ourson de Noël. Enfants, mes frères et moi nous avions des petits oursons avec des foulards rouges et une tuque rouge comme celle du Père Noël. L'ourson de Wolfie me fait un peu penser à ceux de mon enfance.

Wishing Tree

 Last weekend, we went to a nearby(ish) petting zoo for their special Christmas event, which included a visit to the North Pole to see Santa. Wolfie loves it. We think it might have been the real Santa, but we cannot be sure. Wolfie thinks he was, but he thinks this wasn't the real North Pole, even though the helpers told us we got there through magic. Anyway, there were many wonders there, including this WIshing Tree: you pick up the North Pole snow at its base, you blow it and make a wish. I don't know why there was a bear in the branches, but why not. Maybe the bear was the guardian of the tree? In any case, I'm sure this was a real magical Wishing Tree.

Christmas in the Jewellery

Is it too early to talk about Christmas? I guess not, although I try to avoid the topic until December, or at least until very late November. Well, it gets hard, as Christmas comes earlier and earlier. So anyway, you may remember that I blogged last year about a jewellery in Marlow that had really nice decorations. They did it again this year, with this big teddy bear and sort of slide of presents. It's very cute. Last time we went into Marlow, I took this picture so I could share it here.

Honey for the bears

 I took the title of this post from one of Anthony Burgess' lesser known novels (but incidentally one of my favourite). That said, it is not a blog post about the book. But the title is so perfectly fitting for some news I read about recently: two bears escaped a wildlife park in Devon, near Exeter (which I have passed through, but never properly visited). And they ate week's worth of honey. That is both funny and cute. I know bears can be dangerous, even vicious animals, but that's still cute. Anyway, Mish and Lucy are both back in custody after their expedition in the outside world. I hope they had a nice escapade and they enjoyed the sweet treat.

Railway Bear

During our last visit to the National Railway Museum of York, we bought a new teddy bear for Wolfie's menagerie. A teddy bear designed for the 100th anniversary of the Flying Scotsman. His cap says he is the engine driver. Cool. Wolfie and I found him very cute, but my wife hesitated to buy it, because the price was rather high (£18.00). But our son used this Wolfism to end the debate: "I already gave him a kiss and a name, so it's too late mummy." So yeah, we have a new teddy bear. His name is Scotty, bu the way.

Gladiators

As it is getting closer to Easter, I tend to get into a Mediterranean mood and read and watch stuff about Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome, for some reason. Maybe because I associate Easter to old swords and sandals films that were often featured on television next to the Biblical ones when i was a child, I don't know. Anyway, I once received, either at my birthday or at Christmas, a book about Ancient Greek and Roman history(ies). I often read it during the Easter holidays. It had a few very impressive images, including this one, of gladiators fighting animals in the Coliseum. It's just intensely dramatic and, well, absolutely gorgeous, so I remember it to this day. My father took this picture, at my request.

Cub Coffee Sighting

A couple of weeks ago, we went downtown and we stopped at the local market. Sadly, as we arrived too late, everything was closing. Including the Cub Coffee van. Not that I drink coffee, mind you, but my wife does and she likes the idea of an ethical, vegan coffee company. She tried this brand once, back in 2022. Not since then, but we saw their distinctive trailer with the bear cub and the green colours from time to time driving round town. I don't know where they stop, probably in one of the business estates here. They don't only serve coffee, so I might buy something from them one day, just to encourage them. But truly, I just like Cub Coffee because of the bear cub. He's very cute.

Observations sur les calendriers de l'Avent

J'ai vu ce calendrier de l'Avent à M&S, mais je ne l'ai pas acheté, hélas. Ma femme en avait déjà acheté d'autres, un pour chaque membre de la famille. Avec des chocolats, bien entendu. Cela dit, j'aimerais parfois en avoir avec d'autres choses. Comme, mettons, un polar, comme l'an dernier. Je discutais de cela avec mon frère PJ hier: nous nous rappelions comment nous avons commencé à avoir des calendriers de l'Avent. C'était dans les années 80, quand ils recommençaient à être populaires. À l'école, nous en avions des religieux, mais nos parents en avaient acheté qui avaient des bébelles en plastique cheap à chaque jour. Et un chocolat à un moment donné, qui était lui aussi dégueulasse. Ces calendriers ont fait place à ceux plus connus maintenant. Mais ce que j'aime dans celui-ci, c'est la couverture festive et élégante. Et puis, c'est cute un ours à Noël. J'espère que je reverrai Spencer l'Avent prochain.

Kiboikoi

 J'ai appris une chose sur la page Facebook du Café Cambio: ils ont un partenaire qui s'appelle Kiboikoi. C'est un autre café qui a pignon sur rue aux Escoumins dans Charlevoix. J'ai été dans Charlevoix quelquefois, aux Escoumins au moins une fois. Il faudrait que j'y retourne un jour, c'est une très belle région. Si j'y remets les pieds, il faudra passer faire un tour à Kiboikoi, parce que, ben, c'est vraiment une enseigne cool avec l'ours.

Rovos Rail Bears

Okay, so I could have blogged about the UK general elections or the USA, but I'm not in the mood. I hope you don't mind blogging about trains again. I found this picture from the Facebook page of Rovos Rail, the South African luxury train company. They encourage local businesses and they sell teddy bears made by the Hibearnation Handmade Teddy Bears. We all think of one particular bear when one thinks of bears and trains, but there's no reason why there shouldn't be more, in different places and countries. I think teddy bears make for great souvenirs and great traveling companions, so it is just logical that a trainline should sell them as well. I want to buy one for Wolfie, if we ever board on Rovos Rail. One day, perhaps.

BAERskin?

 Okay, internet algorithms are often scary. Eerily efficient. So anyway, for the last few months, when I watch something on YouTube, I get video adverts for BAERskin. They sell hoodies, apparently, not the type of clothes I really like or look for. But I mean, the design on theirs. I kind of like it, the colours, outdoorsy, badass design. And the label, with the badass bear. It looks very much like something I would like to have. I mean, any clothe with THAT bear label. I won't, at least I don't think I will buy anything from them. But it scares me, knowing that I can be such a sucker, that I can be so receptive to aggressive advertisement.

La Boréale (une observation)

Parmi mes lecteurs du Québec, vous connaissez tous sans doute les Brasseurs du Nord et leur bière Boréale, avec leur emblématique ours polaire sur l'étiquette. Elle est partout au Québec: dans les restaurants, les bars... Je crois que c'est l'ours polaire, facilement identifiable, qui leur a donné de la notoriété. Ce n'est pas une bière que je n'aime pas, mais c'est une bière que j'aime moins. De toutes ses variétés, je préfère la rousse.

"Le petit ours"

Mon beau-frère, le frère de ma femme, nous a donné lors de notre dernière réunion familiale toute une pile de livres pour enfants qu'il avait pour sa fille, qui a maintenant grandi. Il y en avaiy beaucoup trop, mais je els ai tous acceptés, surtout qu'il y en avait en français. Dont celui-ci. Un livre éducatif sur les ours. C'est un peu jeune pour Wolfie, mais comme son français est forcément plus limité que son anglais, je crois que c'est une bonne acquisition. Et puis nous aimons tous les deux les ours.

Un nouveau panda

Il y a deux mois, petit loup s'est fait fabriquer un panda à la ferme pour enfants la plus proche, où il y avait des activités de Noël. Il l'a appelé Wisher. Et, comme il est en vacances avec sa mère chez ses grand-parents cette semaine pour la Relâche (elle arrive plus tôt en Angleterre), il a décidé de me le confier. C'est pour que je me sente moins seul alors que je garde le fort. Alors voilà, je suis seul ici avec un chat noir et blanc, un panda et toute une ménagerie de toutous.

Café Columbus (Chicoutimi)

Je me demandais il y a quelques jours dans un billet quels sont les cafés de Chicoutimi qui ont de l'allure et pas trop loin de chez mes parents. Ma nouvelle lectrice Maryse m'a suggéré dans les commentaires Café Columbus, qui est pratiquement de l'autre bord du Boulevard Talbot, juste en face du Montagnais. À ma grande surprise, j'apprends que c'est une chaîne française qui a une présence au Québec et ailleurs.  Comment elle a pu se retrouver à Chicoutimi, c'est un mystère. Cela dit, elle a un ours comme emblème et ça c'est cool, même si ça aussi ça fait un peu étrange. Nous comptons bien le visiter lors de notre prochain séjour dans tous les cas.
