Friday the 13th: a Doomsday Memory

So, as you probably have noticed, today is Friday the 13th. We have three this year, so the superstitious among you better brace themselves: it's going to be a heavy year. I never was superstitious, except maybe when I was a child, and then it was more for fun than anything else. I always had a certain shiver of fear, of playful uncertainty, when it was Friday the 13th. When we were walking back from school, we sometimes walked along the way with a fellow pupil, not a friend but a friend of a friend. He had a wild imagination and had invented a sort of Doomsday calendar for Friday the 13th. He used to say that this particular day was Zombie Day, or Axe Wielding Maniacs Day, or some such things. He started saying whatever horror Apocalyptic things was meant to happen on this specific Friday the 13th we were on. Then he carried on for the rest of the week. It might have sounded scary, but I found it entertaining in its sinister way. So yeah, this is my most vivid childhood memory of Friday the 13th. What is yours?

Friday the 13th of June

Let's just state the obvious: today is Friday the 13th. The very first this year and the only one too. Not that it matters: I am not superstitious, for one, and second, I know from experience that sometimes every Friday is Friday the 13th, in a way, when things go bad. I used to call Friday "the day out at the madhouse". But I digress. Yesterday was truly more Friday the thirteenesque: we lost the internet connection in the neighbourhood for a few hours. I am not saying things cannot go bad today, of course not (I am not jixing anything), but let's face it: a bad day is a bad day is a bad day, whatever the date. Worrying about what may happen is pointless. If a bad day happens, you need to cope with it then and there. So anyway, to all of you, I hope you have a good day today.

"Monday the whatever"

 Last Friday was Friday the 13th and I saw this meme, which made me laugh. I thought it was more fitting to share it on a Monday (also, I had already shared a meme on Friday itself). It is so very true, for most people who work on a Monday and probably for those who don't too. I will make a confession here: this is very true for me these days. I feel like every Monday is Monday the whatever.

Friday the 13th

 Today, we are Friday the 13th of September 2024. The first of the year. And so...? So nothing. I'm not superstitious. But I do have some interest in superstitions and I like to mention it on the blog. 13th or not, I always liked Fridays, so I should enjoy this one. When I was a child, I had a feeling of dread every Friday the 13th, but a pleasant one, it gave me a certain frisson of undefined fear. I daydreamed about being scared of something. One of my acquaintances, a friend of a friend, used to imagine imminent zombie Apocalypses or kaiju attacks every Friday the 13th. I'm not sure why, but we just chit chatted inventing all sorts of horrors on that day and we really enjoyed it. Sadly, nothing ever happened. Nothing exciting like what we imagined anyway. So yeah, that was back then anyway. Any memories of Friday the 13th?

Odin for Friday the 13th (and Halloween)

For today's countdown to Halloween post, given that it is Friday the 13th, I propose a trip down memory lane: ten years ago, I had a black cat named Odin. he was named because of his right eye that was white due to a cataract. We loved him very much. My wife found an old picture of him recently, taken round this time if year. destiny was calling. I had to share it today, because you need a black cat for Friday the 13th and for Halloween.

La tempête du vendredi 13

Une nouvelle qui n'en est pas une: il a fait une grosse tempête de neige hier au Québec. C'est pa première tempête de 2023. Ici, je désespère d'en voir une. Enfin bref, elle est arrivée un vendredi 13, ce qui peut sembler pour certains assez approprié. Moi, je me trouverais chanceux s'il y en avait une ici, je m'ennuie des grosses tempêtes de neige...

Friday the 13th of January

So today we are Friday the 13th of January. I hope nobody among you is superstitious. Friday is Friday, whatever the date it is, so for me it cannot be all bad. It is the first of two Fridays the 13th this year, so if you don't like it, you might take solace in the fact that it will be out of the way early on. And January is an unpleasant month for many anyway, so it might as well has its 13th be on a Friday. Otherwise, I have little to say about it, except that I tend to mention every Friday the 13th on this blog, just for the sake of it. I am not superstitious, but superstitions do interest me, if that makes sense.

Friday the 13th: an anniversary

Well, it is Friday the 13th and I hope nobody here is superstitious. For me, 13 might actually a lucky number: it was on the 13th of May last year that I started my then new job. Since then I have changed account, but I still work for the same company, which is great. I needed a bit of professional stability after the tumultuous years that were the years 2017 to 2020. This is what I was hoping for when I started working for them, and this is what I got. As it is Friday, I might actually do something to celebrate.

Today, we are Friday the 13th of August. It is a banal statement and I am not superstitious, but just because I like folklore (even when I don't believe in its veracity, I thought I would mention it here. It is also the one and only Friday the 13th of 2021, so those suffering from paraskevidekatraiaphobia should find this year rather relaxing. For those sufferent from triskaidekaphobia, 2021 is just as scary as any other year. If any of you suffering from either phobias read this post, please leave a comment.

Vendredi 13

 Nous sommes le vendredi, 13 novembre 2020. Et puis? Et puis rien, je le souligne à chaque vendredi 13 qui passe. C'est le deuxième vendredi 13 de l'année et le dernier aussi. Je ne suis pas superstitieux, mais cette année disons que c'est vraiment préférable de ne pas l'être. Alors pour ceux qui n'aiment pas le vendredi 13, sachez que c'est le dernier de l'année et que 2020 achève.

Odin for Friday the 13th

We are Friday the 13th, so I thought I would share a picture of a black cat, just for the kick of it and because I am not superstitious (or because I do think that old folklore about black cats bringing good luck is true?). Not just any black cat of course: Odin, the black cat we had back in 2013 (fitting isn't it?). I miss him a lot, even now. And I recently found out a bunch of pictures of him I had forgotten I had. So this Friday the 13th is also an excuse to share a "new" picture of my beloved Odin.

Nous sommes le vendredi 13. Je ne suis pas superstitieux, heureusement, mais je dois dire que le vendredi, 13 ou non, est en général le jour où l'inattendu, surtout désagréable, arrive dans ma semaine. Enfin, pas toujours, mais quand des surprises arrivent, ou simplement de l'inusité, c'est souvent un vendredi que ça se produit. C'est peut-être un biais de confirmation. Mais enfin bref, comme vendredi 13 est une occurence rare, je le souligne et je me demande si le 13 fait le mois.

Friday the 13th...

Today is Friday the 13th of April. The first Friday the 13th of the year 2018, in case you have not noticed. I hope nobody among my reader is superstitious. I am mentioning it because... Well, because I might as well. Like everybody, I get all excited when Friday comes, it means the weekend is almost here. I usually barely notice when it falls on a 13th. As a child, it was slightly different: Friday the 13th was a moment of excitement, with the added shiver of superstitious fear. I did not truly believe the day was bad luck, but my imagination made me ponder about potential doom.

Friday the 13th, black cats and Halloween

Halloween this year falls on a Tuesday, which is not great. But we can console ourselves that it means that we have one Friday the 13th this month. Which is today. For those who like Friday the 13th anyway. But in any case, it's a good excuse as any to show pictures of black cats. There cannot be a Friday the 13th without black cats, Halloween would not be Halloween without black cats either, so I am sharing a picture of our beloved cat Odin, who sadly passed away four years ago. I shared this picture before, but I don't have so many of them.

Un chat noir pour ce vendredi 13

Les chats noirs ont une mauvaise réputation, à tout temps de l'année, mais surtout un vendredi 13 comme aujourd'hui. Ce qui m'attriste beaucoup, parce que j'aime les félins en général et les chats noirs en particulier. Je fais peut-être de la projection, mais j'aime leur nonchalance. Ils ont l'air de petites panthères. Alors je télécharge ici une photo prise à Café Venosa, mon café préféré de Montréal, justement parce que c'est aussi un refuge/centre d'adoption pour chats. Je ne me rappelle plus le nom de celui-ci, je ne sais même pas s'ils l'ont encore, mais il est pas mal beau.

No seriously. Don't laugh. There is a severe weather warning going on right now. They say a blizzard is taking over the UK. It snowed yesterday evening, some wet, sloshy snow, then today again. No accumulation. But anyway, there is still this severe weather warning. So they call this a blizzard. I know, we are Friday the 13th, so I better not tempt fate. Things may change until the end of the day, we are early in the afternoon, but so far this is the blizzard they are warning us about.
