Gigantic Hot Cross Buns

 Okay, so this should be my last Easter post for a while. I took this picture at the shop of Bettys in York. Bettys is a legendary tea room there, one so famous that you need to queue to get in. It's worth the wait. For Easter, they were selling these gigantic hot cross buns. A single one feeds a family of three for breakfast. I know because we bought one for Easter morning. We had enough to spare the next day. Some days I think we should move to Yorkshire. We would never go hungry.

Hot Cross Buns

I bought this at M&S recently, a couple of packs. You will easily recognise hot cross buns. We have traditional ones and a number of iointeresting varieties. It will be our main breakfast for the upcoming week, until Easter. Because Wolfie loves hot cross buns and because I live in an English household and this is a very English tradition.

This is the last Easter post until next year. So much happened, so much to blog about, I hope I have timeWe went to my in-laws' home on Good Friday for a Easter eggs' hunt and lunch. It was very nice, Wolfie met not only his grandparents, but his little cousin, whom he does not see often enough. For the afternoon snack/dessert, we had hot cross buns. Traditional ones and chocolate ones. My mother-in-law is not really into sweet things, but she does have a weakness for hot cross buns. A very British preference for a very British food and a very Easter tradition. I must say Ireally enjoy them this time of year. But I still find them exotic and this makes me feel oh so foreign!

Hot cross buns

As Easter is coming and I am preparing it, I had to add the English touch to the traditions in this family. A tradition I have adopted with enthusiasm. I am talking of course of the hot cross buns. I don't know why I like them like that, but I do. So I went to M&S as it is where I think they sell the best ones and bought four packs, two luxury ones and two different. I think we should have enough for Easter morning.

Stocking hot cross buns

Today is Palm Sunday, which means Easter is in a week. We have therefore started stocking for Easter. Among other things, the traditional and quintessentially British hot cross buns. I bought them at Marks & Spencer, partially because nothing is more British than M&S, partially because from experience, they are the best. Also, they had have a wide variety of hot cross buns and since there was a special Easter offer on them... Well, I bought four packs: luxury (traditional), Kentish bramley apples, blueberry and golden hot cross buns. Not the salted caramel and chocolate ones, or the mini chocolate hot cross buns. But that may come later. Like the lady at the till said: "better make the best of something on offer, and they can be frozen anyway." So far, I think the apple ones are my favourite. But all of them are good and perfect for breakfast this week.

Hot cross buns for Easter

Happy Easter everyone! I hope you are enjoying your day. We are having a quiet one here and as I am typing this I haven't had chocolate yet (I kid you not). But we started the day with a very traditional and very British Easter special: the hot cross buns, which we all ate for breakfast. Not the many variants we find nowadays in supermarkets (some of these variants are delicious), but the proper stuff (which we bought in Sainsbury's). A little anecdote about them: it is the one indulgence of my very English mother-in-law, who normally does not like anything sweet. I am not that keen on them, but around Easter I find it a nice tradition.
