The railway station dog

I am blogging again about trains, which is my favourite means of transport and one of my many obsessions. I took this picture at the National Railway Museum of York. It's a stuffed dog of a true train station dog. Apparently, they were fairly frequents in the train stations of old. You don't see them anymore, except stuffed like this one, kept as a memory. There is "Station Jim" at the Slough railway station, maybe the one and only attraction of this dreary town. Anyway, I find it a nice tradition, even though I am not a dog person. Every station should have its dog.

What's that weird thing on its back? Some kind of carrier or something?
