Cryptid Cats

You may remember this post from March 2023, about a mysterious picture of what appears to be a panther in the wild. Taken in England. Well, I recently read an article in the Bucks Free Press mentioning 10 places in Buckinghamshire where you can find big cats. You gotta love old local newspapers, sometimes they get into paranormal or cryptozoology, and it fires up my imagination. No, I don't believe there are big cats the size of panthers or pumas dwelling in the UK. But one can dream, even a skeptical mind like me. Oh and the article mentions a "self-proclaimed expert" (their word), who has a website called Big Cats of the Chilterns. But all skepticism aside, I love the idea of the huge but elusive felines roaming the countryside.

Mysterious "Panther"

I will start this post by a disclaimer: I love a bit of cryptozoology, however I know it is a pseudoscience. I will therefore relay this piece of news with caution: I remain very skeptical regarding the conclusions people have drawn from it. But anyway, a "panther" was caught on camera in a field in Gloucestershire. Or at least what looks like a black panther, or a rather large cat. The animal, maybe a feline, appears to be as large as a Labrador dog, but twice as long, or so says the article. Now I have seen the video, it is quite short and the image does not show all that much, so I don't think it is quite clear at all. I suspect an optical illusion and a mundane explanation. All the same, large cats sighting has been a staple of this country's folklore, so the news set my imagination on fire.

J'ai la trouille

J'ai pris cette photo sur la page Facebook de la Panthère verte, elle date de 2016. J'ai tojours voulu manger leur spéciaux de l'Halloween, alors je le mentionne ici. Mais je voulais bloguer sur le sujet pour une autre raison: j'ai appris récemment, toujours sur leur page Facebook, qu'ils ont dû fermer leur restaurant sur Mont-Royal. Je crois comprendre qu'ils en ont fermé un autre et j'ai peur qu'avec le manque de main d'oeuvre et la pandémie, ce soit le début de la fin pour eux. Or, c'est mon restaurant végétalien préféré de Montréal. Je serais triste s'ils fermaient, mettons.

Le nouveau logo de la Panthère verte

J'ai une bonne et une mauvaise nouvelle tirées de la page Facebook de La Panthère Verte. La bonne: leur local sur Mont-Royal est réouvert. Pour les chanceux qui veulent essayer, c'est le meilleur resto vegan que j'ai essayé dans la ville (ma femme n'est pas d'accord). La mauvaise: qui c'est qui a eu l'idée de changer de logo? Ils ont sorti celui-là en octobre 2020 et franchement il est pas vargeux.

J'ai la trouille...

En fait, non pas vraiment. Mais je cherchais sur la page Facebook de la Panthère verte, et je ne vois nulle part de photo de leur tarte à la citrouille et pacanes qu'ils ont dans le temps de l'Halloween. Pas que j'aie la chance d'en manger, dans un futur proche, mais bon. Ce serait bien de voir qu'ils sont actifs et fassent quelque chose pour souligner l'Halloween. Pas que je sois inquiet, remarquez. Ou peut-être si.

La tarte à la citrouille de la Panthère Verte

La vie est parfois d'une cruauté sans nom (!). Moins d'une semaine après mon départ de Montréal, j'apprends de leur page Facebook que la Panthère Verte sort leur tarte à la citrouille végétalienne cette semaine. Pas que j'aie jamais été un grand fan de tarte à la citrouille (j'en ai mangé très peu dans ma vie), mais j'ai confiance que, s'il y a un endroit où elle sera bonne, c'est à la Panthère Verte. Et j'aime les commerces qui prennent l'Halloween au sérieux et la célèbrent en grande pompe. Sur cette photo publicitaire, même leur panthère mascotte est déguisée en fantôme. Leur enthousiasme est admirable et contagieux. Enfin bref, pour la tarte à la citrouille et les chanceux qui pourront y goûter, c'est "100% végétalien, sans gluten et sans soya". Disponible en pointe depuis hier, si vous désirez en commander une complète, vous devez le faire avant jeudi. Je dis ça, mais ai-je encore des lecteurs de Montréal?

Le Tropikale

Je plogue encore une fois un smoothie de la Panthère Verte que je n'ai pas bu. C'est le Tropikale, fait notamment de... kale. J'ai trouvé ça sur leur page Facebook. Je plogue, parce que, même si je suis sceptique à propos de tout ce qui concerne les vertus prétendues des smoothies, tous ceux que j'ai bus à la Panthère Verte étaient délicieux. Ensuite, parce qu'ils ont éliminé le jus de leur menu et font maintenant exclusivement des smoothies, pour des raisons environnementales. Apparemment, le jus gaspillerait beaucoup trop du fruit. J'aime bien le côté militant écolo tout en étant délicieux. Ils prêchent pas l'exemple plutôt que par sermons. Ils passent leur message quand même, mais je veux être complice plutôt que me sentir coupable.

The Green Panther Experience

I have only been twice to The Green Panther, the vegan restaurant chain in Montreal. Twice it was at their restaurant on Mont-Royal Avenue, at two very different moments. Their mascot caught my eye, so I went there out of curiosity. The restaurant was virtually empty, I ordered what they claim is the best falafel of Montreal. After tasting it, I have to say that they are right. You can read more about the falafel here. I was hooked and I decided to come back as soon as I could.

I don't know if it was because it was in the evening instead of afternoon, or because The Green Panther had gained a reputation since my first time, but the second time I went there with my wife it was jam packed. A sign not only of the popularity of the restaurant, but of vegan eating in general. It is the new craze in Montreal, especially on the Plateau Mont-Royal, which always had its share of hippies and eco-friendly dwellers. Instead of being all quiet, it was loud. There were many Quebeckers, but also a few French (I find this strange as France is not a nation of vegetarians, let alone vegans) and the usual Anglos. This is less of a surprise as Anglo-Saxons are often more into vegetarianism and veganism. There was two of them, chatting very loudly, which was irritating my wife to no end. Mentioning it to me later, I said to tease her (I am mean like that sometimes): "Well, of course they were rude, they are English speakers like you." My wife replied (she is used to this kind of teasing from me): "I only share a language with them, you share their nationality." Touché. However cruel, she still said a great unknown line. I guess a nice place does not necessarily bring a nice clientèle. The staff was nice though, warm and friendly. And the food the second time round? We both had burgers, I don't remember which ones exactly. I think she had a VégéBurger and I had a VégéPanthère. Absolutely delicious, and I did not miss meat even once. And more strangely, I actually enjoyed the food more than my wife, even though she is vegetarian. So that was The Green Panther Experience.

Voir la vie en rose (la photo du mois)

C'est le moment de la photo du mois, le thème est "voir la vie en rose", choisie par Arwen. Ca a été d'une simplicité désarmante à trouver: cette photo d'Odin sur la couverture à pique-nique. Parce qu'Odin était un chat noir qui avait l'air d'une petite panthère, comme tous les chats noirs. Parce qu'il y a une panthère rose. Parce qu'il est sur cette photo sur quelque chose de rose. Et surtout parce que lorsqu'Odin était vivant, il nous faisait voir la vie en rose, tout noir qu'il était. C'est la seconde fois que j'utilise Odin pour la photo du mois. À chaque fois, il s'est imposé d'emblée.
