A concert of crows

This post is about one of those little meaningless details that make life. This evening, as I was waiting for the train home, I heard a few crows cawing. The environment at and around the little train station and near the railway leading home is quite full of animal life: there are cats prowling around, pheasants, rabbits, seagulls, dogs barking in nearby yards, etc. Usually I spend my waiting time awing at the cats like a sucker, but this time it was the crows that got my attention. I heard them first cawing from afar, loudly, then they came flying, two or three of them, and perched on a tree near the platform. So for a brief moment I enjoyed their song. As a child, I didn't like crows and corvids, I thought their cry sounded nasty and unpleasant, I thought their black feathers were sinister. Now I love them and even their cawing has a sort of primal beauty. I blogged about corvids before and I know this post sounds very much like my old one. But this evening, listening to them, I rediscovered how much enjoyable is their cawing.

The crows are numerous in our area, and they are not too well-liked. They tend to interfere with the corn crop before we are able to gather it.:-) The other morning, I noticed a mockingbird (TN state bird) dive-bombing a crow!

This post caught my eye, as crows/ravens are always apt to do. I too enjoy the ravens. This spring we had a 'murder' of crows that made their home in our backyard. Actually, I believe these to be Ravens because they were enormous in size. They actually made a nest in a tree by the swing set and had a baby! Interestingly, the ravens worked as a group in raising the baby. Mother and Father took turns at the nest with the feeding, while other members of their little coven would stand guard in the surrounding trees. They did this because there is also a band of Hawks who regularly haunt my back yard as well, and as it turns out the Hawks and Crows/Ravens are contentious adversaries. So there is usually a great noisy battle going on in my back yard on any given day. And let state that the baby raven was the noisiest animal ever!!! I do love them, but I was glad when he was big enough for them to move elsewhere. I took some photos, perhaps I will post on them one day.

Hope you are well, I've been away for a long while due to family issues, and am just now attempting to get back in the swing of things a little at a time. Glad to see that you are still out here in blog land!

Thank you all for commenting.
@Wendy/The Artful Gypsy-Thank you for commenting and welcome back in the blogosphere! I am glad to know you are okay. I hope whatever family issue you had you and your loved ones recovered from it. Fascinating anecdote you wrote about ravens and hawks. In our Dungeons & Dragons games (the ones of my brothers and I), ravens are the symbol/emblem of our main villains.
