Well, it seems that #Noirvember this might end in a whimper. This is what I am reading these days: The Sain't Getaway, by Leslie Charteris, featuring Simon Templar, AKA The Saint. He is better known for the TV series, but he first existed in novels. This is actually the third Saint adventure I read, the first one was a full novel, the second a short story. I bought this book second hand for a quid. A bargain and, to be honest, I'm glad I didn't have to pay more, as it is rather dated: it is rather verbose for crime fiction, The Saint is a bit too much of a fop for my taste and there are huge leaps of logic that makes it difficult to find the whole thing plausible. Although there is a fair deal of violence, I can't say that it has the merciless kind proper for Noirvember. Worse: the cover picture so far does not seem to have anything to do with the plot. Be that as it may, it cost me a pound so I cannot complain. Wolfie actually chose that one for me: I showed him a couple of books and asked which one I should read, he said: "This one because it looks Christmasee". Must be the snow. It is true that I was thinking it could be a Christmas read, only because of the cover. Well, at least it was cheap, and it is entertaining enough.

Cheap Thriller

Anatomy of a Train
I took this picture about five years ago at the the National Railway Museum of York. I learned on their Facebook page that it will (should?) reopen on the 3rd of December. I'm not sure if I would take the risk so early, but I do hope this will be the next museum we will visit as a family. I think it would fascinate Wolfie. rewatching as I often do the old pictures of our trip, It struck me that he would enjoy the NRM for sometimes different reasons than me. I love what trains and train travels represent at an almost symbolic level. I often blogged about it. I think he will also and especially love the technical aspect of trains. He should really enjoy for instance this steam engine opened up to show its mechanism and how it works. I find it interesting, impressive even, but I am not technical enough to truly appreciate the amount of work and technology that is needed to make such engine possible. Wolfie is very young of course, but he quickly gets that. He's a natural engineer.

Nordic Socks
Some of my readers may have noticed that I am a sucker for warm clothes, especially when winter is on its way. Warm clothes in general and warm socks in particular. It seems that Facebook noticed it as well and it is scary how accurate it is: I just received on my newsfeed some advertisement for Nordic Socks. And I could not help but look at the pictures on the website and I really, really want some. I really am a sucker, excuse the terrible pun.

The Catherine Wheel
You may remember that last year, I blogged about the The Catherine Wheel, a Wetherspoon pub in Henley. Or, more specifically, the sign of The Catherine Wheel in Henley. The reason was simple: it was Saint Catherine's Day and this was an excuse to learn about the saint and why she is associated to this breaking wheel, which is of course an instrument of torture. The name of the pub and the image always intrigued me. Well, today is also Saint Catherine's Day and I am sharing another photo of the ensign of the Catherine Wheel in Henley. I took it back in January this year, during a visit in the town and I have literally been waiting all year to share it with you today (very sad, I know). So here it is. A gloomy image inviting you to go in, eat, drink and be merry. Gory, but cool.

Mafia Inc. for #Noirvember
The month is almost over and thus #Noirvember will also soon be over, but I will carry on enjoying crime fiction for the coming months, in film and book form. And I wanted tonight to plug both a film and a movie for every crime fiction and crime history buffs among you. Although I must quickly give a disclaimer: I have not watched the film yet. I have nevertheless heard good things about it. You may remember some years ago that I blogged about Mafia Inc, non fiction book about the Sicilian mafia and organised crime in Montreal. They made last year a fictionalised movie adaptation of the book, with the same title. You can see the trailer below, with subtitles in English, and it seems quite solid. In any case, it looks like a perfect watch for #Noirvember. I know it is a perfect read.
Cette photo me rappelle donc bien des souvenirs hivernaux.

Meeting over a mince pie
18 years ago today I met my wife. I told the story before, but suffice to say that it was in the uni's hall of residences where I lived and I was eating a mince pie. More details in this post. Every year since that day, I have a mince pie as a dessert. Even though I don't like mince pies all that much. Neither does my wife. I was curious about it back then, or maybe there was a discount on mince pies where I used to shop or something, in any case I had decided to buy some. I cannot remember the brand I got then. This year, I have decided to buy a pack from M&S, because from experience they are among the best of mince pies (although in all those years I cannot honestly say that I have become a connoisseur).

Bookshop Local this Christmas
Christmas is coming, the geese are getting fat, and we are in lockdown. Obviously, I have been unable to go to the local bookshop. But I have seen trending on Twitter, from my local bookshop and others, this image, promoted by Books Are My Bag, encouraging people to shop locally for Christmas and to encourage local businesses, particularly local bookshops. So this is what I intend to do, as much as I can: buy Christmas presents, books and others, from local businesses. I will blog more about it in the upcoming weeks, but until then I thought I,d share the image, because it is very nice and it puts you in a festive spirit.

The Manchurian Candidate for #Noirvember
I know I gave as a reading suggestion The Manchurian Candidate by Richard Condon, back in 2017, but it struck me recently that both the original novel and the movie adaptation (the 1962 one, not the ludicrous remake) would make a great read/watch for #Noirvember. I started reading it back in 2016, a few weeks after the results of the American election, then I kept watching and rewatching the movie. Given the way certain pathetic people are trying to deny the results and are barely hiding their intention to execute a coup d'état, I keep thinking that we should all revisit The Manchurian Candidate. And make sure we never let the spiritual heirs of John and Eleonor Iselin take power again.

The Old Playmobil Castle
Last weekend, Wolfie decided that he wanted to build his old Playmobil castle. I say old, because for a toy, it is indeed quite old: my son received it two years from his maternal uncle, who had first given it to his own daughter. Since our niece is now a young adult he gave us a few buckets of her old toys. Among them, the famous castle. Wolfie had often played with it before, but it was the very first time when he had decided to properly build it, following the plan. I think there are still a few pieces missing, the action figures are mostly gone, that said we managed to do a fairly good job with it, as you can see on the picture. It was not easy, as I am not very technical and not much of an architect (Wolfie is far better, he's a natural builder and he understood the plan very well). It took us the weekend and I was quite proud of the result and of my son even more, even though there were still a few pieces to put on. Unfortunately, the very next day Wolfie walked into my office telling me that he had decided to bring the castle down so he could make room for... another train track. I felt quite sad.
Pizza maison

Allotment Offer
When she got back from dropping Wolfie had preschool yesterday morning, my wife bumped into one of our neighbours, one we don't know much. She was quite chatty and seemed eager to convince my wife to rent an allotment nearby which she is in charge of. The offer is tempting, we would love to grow our own fruits, vegetables and maybe flowers, but we both think we lack time and discipline to take care of an allotment. My wife said that she was suprised the neighbour made this offer, given the sorry state of our front garden. "Anybody who had paid attention to it would know we are ill fit to take care of an allotment." I replied: "Angel, this is proof that nobody cares about our front garden." Which I think deserves to be a new great unknown line. Anyway, the offer is quite reassuring in a way: we can't be that bad gardeners.
