Penultimate Springwatch tonight

I don't know if it will feature otters, but it is the penultimate Springwatch episode of 2015 tonight in a few minutes on BBC2. I did not follow it as much this year, what with life taking a lot of my time and keeping me away from the TV screen. I hope I can find time to catch up on BBC iPlayer. Anyway, to my British readers: watch it. Get the reminder on now. Turn the TV on. And enjoy British wildlife. So anyway, to illustrate this post, I decided to use this picture from the otter sanctuary in Buckfastleigh. From last year's holidays in Devon. The otter was eating a rats burger. This is one thing I love about otters: they are also predators and they eat the rodents I hate. Think of me if otters are featured tonight.

Tea for the road

I found this picture on the Facebook page of David's Tea. I had not visited it for a while. It is two of their travel mugs, wearing their summer colours. I love all their tea accessories, but this one is next on the list I think. I can just picture myself using a travel mug on long train journeys here. It just fits train traveling. I am not certain how a travel mug works for tea: how do you infuse it on the road? But there must be instructions coming with it. In any case, I want one. Actually, I want a David's Tea travel mug for every season. So four all in all.

The home of the Shelleys

This is Albion House, in the town of Marlow, Buckinghamshire. The town has many charming old buildings like this one, but this is a very special house: it was the home of Mary and Percy Bysshe Shelley for a year or so, between 1817-1818. This is where Mary Shelley completed the writing of Frankenstein. So this is a sacred place of pilgrimage for all aficionados of the horror genre. I will try to go back there around Halloween to take a picture, see if the circumstances bring extra atmosphere. Until then, behold the sacred place that saw the birth of a monster.

It will be York

Well, it is official since yesterday, we will go to York for the holidays. We have found an accommodation and made reservation, so everything is secured. Once we found the one we wanted, everything just came automatically: it is the perfect place, situated in the city near every tourist attraction we want to go to, the reviews are good and the place looks lovely and comfortable. And knowing we found our accommodation just cleared every doubt in our mind about York as a holiday destination. So the holidays are now pretty much sorted. It is both a relief and exciting.

The Green Panther Experience

I have only been twice to The Green Panther, the vegan restaurant chain in Montreal. Twice it was at their restaurant on Mont-Royal Avenue, at two very different moments. Their mascot caught my eye, so I went there out of curiosity. The restaurant was virtually empty, I ordered what they claim is the best falafel of Montreal. After tasting it, I have to say that they are right. You can read more about the falafel here. I was hooked and I decided to come back as soon as I could.

I don't know if it was because it was in the evening instead of afternoon, or because The Green Panther had gained a reputation since my first time, but the second time I went there with my wife it was jam packed. A sign not only of the popularity of the restaurant, but of vegan eating in general. It is the new craze in Montreal, especially on the Plateau Mont-Royal, which always had its share of hippies and eco-friendly dwellers. Instead of being all quiet, it was loud. There were many Quebeckers, but also a few French (I find this strange as France is not a nation of vegetarians, let alone vegans) and the usual Anglos. This is less of a surprise as Anglo-Saxons are often more into vegetarianism and veganism. There was two of them, chatting very loudly, which was irritating my wife to no end. Mentioning it to me later, I said to tease her (I am mean like that sometimes): "Well, of course they were rude, they are English speakers like you." My wife replied (she is used to this kind of teasing from me): "I only share a language with them, you share their nationality." Touché. However cruel, she still said a great unknown line. I guess a nice place does not necessarily bring a nice clientèle. The staff was nice though, warm and friendly. And the food the second time round? We both had burgers, I don't remember which ones exactly. I think she had a VégéBurger and I had a VégéPanthère. Absolutely delicious, and I did not miss meat even once. And more strangely, I actually enjoyed the food more than my wife, even though she is vegetarian. So that was The Green Panther Experience.

Being dragged to a musical

In less than an hour, my wife and I are supposed to see a musical, done by a local amateur dramatic/operatic society. We are going because a friend of ours is part of the cast. But we only go out of friendship (and because it is literally next door). Because we are fairly sure it will be bad. Actually, our friend herself said it is not a good show (rubbish material, conflicting egos, etc). I have nothing against amateur dramatic societies, or amateur operatic societies, as this one is supposed to be. But it is not an operatic society. They used to produce comic operas and good quality musicals a few decades ago, but for the last few years or so have fallen back to poor productions based on 80s popular tunes turned into musicals, or modern soaps turned into musicals, etc. I like to see amateur productions when they actually take good care of what they do and are eager to take on challenging material. Because quality material makes people better. And this one, well, isn't. So in sum, I am really dreading it.

The Art of Contact Combat

As you may have noticed, I did not blog yesterday. After my class of Krav Maga, I was too exhausted and my body was hurting like hell. I wanted to blog, but simply lacked energy. It might be the case for most of my Wednesdays now. The same happened with my acting classes back in 2010-2011. But hey, I have things to blog about afterwards.

So yes, anyway, about the training itself. I am learning a lot, sometimes the hard way: as I hesitated between two movements when I was answering to a knife attack, my instructors made me do push-ups. Or, as he calls it, press-ups. We cannot chit chat during warmups, or push-ups. Basically, mistakes we cannot make are punished with push-ups. Not that I to do many push-ups, in fact only when I stopped during exercise (I am a committed student), but it is something still foreign to me, something akin to a military mentality. Krav Maga is not so much about learning perfectly a movement or a technique but as integrating reflexes and instincts. To do what feels natural. Krav Maga truly is a martial art. There is a certain elegance in it.

What I am also gaining is energy, stamina and strength. My instructor said that when I started (and that was a month ago) I could barely do ten sit-ups, and badly. Now I do 25 easily. And that was my fifth lesson. I even had enough energy left to do a bit of extra training, when I exercised with fellow beginners the lessons we learned. basically, the knife attack. One takes a fake knife, threatens the other, using verbal abuse as well just to make it realistic (and because it's kind of fun), the other defend himself/herself and does the counter-attack. We were four there, two guys, two girls. One is a professional dancer working in London (no, not that kind of dancer, she does tango and things like that), the other a barmaid at a local pub (, the guy I don't know exactly. I have to say, threatening a woman with a knife, even a fake and harmless one, and saying something nasty, even as part of training, made me slightly uncomfortable. So she asked: "So you want to rape me or something?" and I answered: "Well yes, but go easy on me, it is my first time." My three fellows burst out laughing. So yes, for a few minutes, the extra training was pretty relaxed. I think that however silly the line was, it deserves to be a great unknown line. My first about a martial art.

C'était dans la nuit brune...

"C'était, dans la nuit brune,
Sur le clocher jauni,
La lune
Comme un point sur un i.

Lune, quel esprit sombre

Fruits for Tuesday

The fruit baskets were back at work today. I mentioned them here and here. I think I understood the schedule now: basically the first Tuesday of every month. It brightened my day, as it always does. They had the usual bananas (not ripe enough), apples, satsumas (I think they were satsumas) and I did not see any pears. I think they were all gone by the time I went to the kitchen. I did not have them for breakfast this time, as I was too busy at my desk, instead I took a banana in lieu of dessert after my lunch. Gosh I cannot believe how healthy I am these days! Or try to be anyway. But I discovered that I enjoy fresh fruits, especially when they are free.

A few trivial observations about the fruit baskets:

-"Always remember to give the fruit a quick wash before eating it." Well, I do.
-The picture of the fruit basket is a still life.
-The fruit basket is also a sort of horn of plenty.
-Fruits are surprisingly popular among my colleagues. The baskets are empty at the end of the day.

Well, that's it really. I will try to say something new in a month's time.

Fungi

This is another painting that my wife and I saw at a local art exhibit. I apologize for the poor shot. The painting is called Fungi and it was done y a certain Jo Tilbury. I could not find any Like for Squeaky Wiper, this painting had a strong effect on me. This is a more autumnal picture, so you may find it out of time, but these days it does not feel like summer is on its way. And autumn is my favourite season, so it is nice to look at something reminiscent of it from time to time. I find that autumn is a subject of choice in art exhibits in general, whatever the time of year.

So anyway, I loved this painting. There is something vaguely eerie about it, otherworldly even. Mushrooms are associated in folklore with the supernatural and witchcraft. One could picture gnomes hiding in them, some faery creature walking through them, or (of course) witches picking them up for some potions or poison. I know, I have a wild imagination. Still, I wish I had a wall to put this picture on. It would be a good excuse as any to buy it.

Je me suis toujours demandé pourquoi.

Will it be York?

Well, I learned today at work that my holidays have been approved. Which is great. Even if it is not for a while, knowing I have holidays to look forward to will be something to keep my spirit up. But that means my wife and I will need to decide where to go and organize this. As you may remember, we were hesitating between Edinburgh and York. Our heart leans towards to Scotland, however for practical reasons it is more likely to be Yorkshire. That said, we are also looking at other options, but I would really want to go up North for these holidays. Any suggestions? And if it is York, any tip of any kind? Places to stay or visit? I am open to suggestions.
