So this is the end of January today. How was your month? generally I find January depressing and slow, it wasn't the case this time. I had lots of holidays (I am on my last day of holidays actually) and, well, things just went really quickly. Maybe too quickly: I feel like I have done nothing of my month. For a winter month, it was suitably cold, but sadly without snow. So we spent a lot of January inside. Anyway, this was mine, how was yours?

A French Toast Sandwich?
Recently, my wife sent me a link to a recipe of a French toast peanut butter and jelly sandwich. God only knows how she found it. It is made of three French toasts, crunchy peanut butter, blueberry jam and raspberries. It looks absolutely calorific and the perfect recipe if you want to clog your arteries. Typical American overindulgence. Now, because Wolfie is quite fond of French toasts, my wife would like me to make it for him. And, well... I don't know. I love every single component of the French toast sandwich, but I never liked the idea of mixing jam and peanut butter, for one. It spoils the flavour of both in my opinion. And adding it to French toasts... It's just so piggish, isn't it? I guess at least he wouldn't be short on proteins. Anyway, since I saw the recipe, I keep wondering who is the sick, twisted mind who invented this abomination.

Staycation
I am on holiday this week, until the end of January. As this is a normal school time for Wolfie and we don't really have anywhere to go, I am having a staycation. And I am doing absolutely nothing with it, apart from chilling out and relaxing a bit. Dolce far niente, as my Italian friends would say. A staycation might not be the ideal way of spending free time for many, but in my case this is just what the doctor's ordered, and with it January is passing through really quickly. I don't want all my holidays this year to be a staycation, but have plenty of time to plan our next trip somewhere.
Il m'a dit: "Daddy, I don't want to be England, I want to be Québec."

The Owl Game
Last week, I blogged about the Lava Game, one of Wolfie's favourite games walking back from school (sometimes walking to school as well, which I always fear might get him late). But he has another one he loves just as much: the Owl Game. Basically, he flaps his arms as if they were wings and hoots. Then when we talk to him, he says "I'm an owl" and it's all he is going to say until he is home. Owls seem to have accidentally become our totemic birds in the family: my wife has them on mugs, wallet, jumpers and so on. I'm not sure why, she does not like owls particularly. But I do love them quite a lot, for a number of reasons I will not dwell into, but you will find a good deal about owls on this blog. Maybe Wolfie picked up on that.

Children Parties
Last weekend, we went to two children birthday parties, back to back. Not the first one since Wolfie started school. In fact, I kind of lost count of the number of celebrations we went to as new parents. It's a new sort of social life, one we never quite had before. We don't know every parent, many are acquaintances but none are friends as of yet, nevertheless we spend a good deal of time with them. When we started doing it, Wolfie was not very thrilled. Now he always look forward to it. Mainly because he knows there will be sweets, but also because he enjoys meeting his friends. And we do too, as it really allows us to socialize. I think my mother-in-law said it best: "It's a nice way to get you through January faster." And this deserves to be a great unknown line.

Bookmarks: lost and found
I blogged recently about bookmarks, the ones I patiently gathered every time I went to the local bookshop (or another not local ones) and were mysteriously nowhere to be found. Well, they are still nowhere to be found, but I discovered new ones, Or rather, I found new ones I had forgotten I had: I just needed to check in my last unread purchases from the bookshop. Of course, there was a new bookmark in each one of them. So that solved my problem and the shortage. Still, the mystery of the lost ones remain. And the ordeal reminds me that I must find one specific place to store them.

The Lava Game
Wolfie has a new game he plays when he's outside, generally walking back from school: the Lava Game. Basically, he does as if every crack in the ground or pavement, any patch of asphalt is red hot lava. As if there was a volcano nearby and it was erupting. I don't know where he got that from, maybe one of the videos he watched, but in any case, now we must avoid lava when we walk outside. It's actually quite fun, when you are not in a hurry.

Blue Monday (so-called)
Once again this year, it is Blue Monday. Which I don't believe into, to be honest. Anyway, the third Monday of January is meant to be the most depressing of the year. It sort of makes sense, January being particularly gloomy and Monday being, well Monday. But for my taste, every Monday is Blue Monday, especially in January. And I will make a confession here: if I had to choose a personal Blue Monday, it would be at some point in July (I hate summer heat). Be that as it may, even in gloomy January and accepting, for argument's sake, that Blue Monday is a real thing, it could be worse: I don't hate the job I have (a few years ago, that was a different matter)and the current pandemic means that I don't have to commute. Working days generally go pretty fast, thankfully. And you, do you feel bluesy on Blue Monday? If so, how do you cope with it?

First coffee
No, no, I haven't changed my mind. I still hate, hate, hate coffee. But yesterday was a special day all the same for the one coffee lover in this household: my wife. She tried for the very first time the coffee machine she bought with the oney my parents had given as a present. She did a simple latte, nothing too fancy or elaborate, but she did it like a pro. I guess I will have to learn to be a barista too, so I can prepare coffee for her. As long as I don't have to drink it.

The Fates: Greek Mythology's Most Powerful Deities
One of my favourite YouTube channels, Storied, which was formerly Monstrum, has come up with a new series, Fate&Fabled, about, well... Fables and myths. They started with a bang, with a great, comprehensive summary of the Greek's Moirai, aka the Fates. Maybe the mos mysterious figures of Greek Mythology. I'm inviting you to watch it now. It's about ten minutes, so it won't take much of your time. And it's worth every second of it.

My kingdom for a bookmark!
Something strange happened recently. I mean very strange. I was looking for a bookmark to put on a book I intend to start (duh!), while my other bookmarks are already in use. Yes, I read many books at the same time. But I could not find a single bookmark available. All my favourite ones were already in use, and the many, many I got from bookshops (the local one and others) were, well, nowhere to be found. As if they had just vanished. So I was I knew of socks disappearing, but not that. In the end, I found an old, worned out one between two books, so my problem was sold, but the mystery remains. Where have all the bookmarks gone?

Farewell to the DIY shop
I learned some sad news yesterday: the local DIY shop, which has been in business for 25 years, will be shutting down soon. The Covid pandemic hit it hard apparently. it is very sad not only because it's another independent shop that gets hurt, but because it was really a nice shop. I say this and I was never into DIY or very good at it, but the staff there was nice and friendly, knew their business and therefore I always found what I was looking for and got back from there entirely satisfied. It even had a miniature train station at some point, worth the visit in itself. But even after they took the model away, it was a pleasure to go there. My aunt, the sister of my mother, once said about her late husband (the best of men)that: "When (he) is bored one weekend afternoon, he goes to the DIY shop. And if after he comes home he is bored again, he goes back to the DIY shop again!" I thought she was merely describing one of my uncle's many nice little quirks, but looking back at it after having experienced this local shop, I think it makes perfect sense. There are worse ways to kill boredom than getting a few useful tools for the house. In any case, it deserves to be a great unknown line.

Jade teapot
I found this picture in the Facebook page of the British Museum. It is not an antique, it was actually made in 2017, by Chinese artist Yu Ting. It's on display in Room 33b, for those wishing to visit the place. I know I do. I wanted to share this picture because I love tea and because this got me thinking about something. Say what you will about the Chinese, and people in the Far East in general, but they sure know how to make and prepare tea. They turn it into an art. This teapot is a prime example of it. And I have a rhetorical question about this: who in his right mind, except a raving maniac, would spoil such delicate work by throwing a splotch of milk in it?

No snow yet
Last Friday, to my great surprise, BBC Weather forecast for our area snow. They even sent a weather warning, saying that there would be heavy snow (!) in the afternoon. I did not believe it: temperatures were a little bit above zero. Then I started hoping, as they afternoon went on, until the evening. But as I should have excepted, nothing happened. Not even a few drops. I know I should not have put my hopes up, but I ended up sorely disappointed all the same. So since the beginning of 2022, we haven't had any snow as of yet. It would be the ideal time, since we don't have to go anywhere. But no.

Bigfoot, the board game

The Orange Coat Trend
At the very beginning of winter, when the weather started being seriously cold, I bought a new coat for Wolfie,as his old one was getting too small. Time goes fast like this when you have a child, he just outgrows his clothes so quickly. I bought him a nice and warm coat with a lovely orange colour, like ochre. It is a winter coat, but the colours is truly autumnal (I guess that is one of the reasons why I like it). I was surprised when I saw that many children in his school and outside wear a coat of the same colour. The same colour, but not the same brand. I also saw a few adults wearing fiery orange coats recently, the last time was on Wednesday. Always men and boys. It is like there is a new trend for coats for males and it is ochre. Anybody else noticed it? Anyway, I am tempted to buy myself one before they get out of fashion. They look really nice.
Insomnie maudite

Of owls and airplanes
I recently read this article about owls: apparently engineers are studying the wings of owls to invent silent wind turbines and airplanes. Because owls are apparently very silent birds, when it comes to flying anyway. I love owls, so if they manage to make human environment and transport less noisy thanks to them, I love them even more. It will make them even cooler than they already are. Speaking of owls, I suspect there is one living nearby, as sometimes I think I can hear hooting outside at night.

The reading program
A new year means a new reading list for this avid book reader. As I bought a lot last year and I haven't had the chance to read all the titles, I don't intend to stop by the local bookshop to buy more (however tempted I am). I will plough through every book I already have, big and small. For the first few months, it will mostly be crime fiction, with one or two spy thrillers (or hybrid crime/spy novels). Well, if you have been following this blog for a while this should not come as a surprise, but there you go. And you, what do you intend to read this year?
"Mon Joe"

Last year's washing up
I thought I would share today a new great unknown line, to start the new year. It is one my wife made at the end of... 2020. I remembered it thanks to Memories on Facebook. So anyway, she said this on the 31st of December 2020: "Oh I create a lot of washing up I'm afraid! I will try to finish it sometimes this year." I cannot remember if she did or not, but honestly, this was hilarious.
Janus in GoldenEye
Something struck me recently about January: it is named after the Roman God Janus. It is also the codename or nom de guerre of the main villain in the James Bond movie GoldenEye. The very first I watched in cinema (but I was a Bond fan before). So maybe, just maybe, GoldenEye should be my Bond movie to start January. Anyway, spoiler alert, you find below the scene where Janus' true identity is reveals and he meets 007. You will also find out how he got that name. I love these quiet moments in Bond movies, they are full of atmosphere. This one is still chilling and stands out very well after more than 25 years.

For Auld Lang Syne
Today is the New Year, so Happy New year everyone! And of course as it is tradition I am sharing with you Auld Lang Syne. Brought you this year by the Peanuts gang.
