The ever expanding tribe

This is a quick post about tonight's Krav Maga class. I am in pain, as usual, but it is good pain. I feel good. And anyway, however in pain I am, it is far less than when I started. Tonight I did something silly: I forgot to put my sneakers, so I wore my ordinary Clarks shoes instead. But nobody noticed. That is for the meaningless anecdote. More importantly, the number of students has gone up again: one newbie last week, who is very talented (he puts me to shame really), and two newbies this week: a young adult woman, borderline teenager, and a thirteen year old girl, the daughter of one of the veteran students. She is apparently too good for the children classes (because the club I belong to also gives children classes). Sometimes, I feel that we are part of a new tribe of Israel. Except that none of us is Jewish (I don't think so anyway, but I might be wrong). In a way, it is true. I have not made friends yet, true friends I mean, so far they are more acquaintances, but all the same, it does feel like a tribe.

Sunday at the Regatta

I never thought I would say this, especially not after my last post on the topic, but Sunday I had a lovely time at the regatta. Granted, I didn't see the boats (this picture was taken back in 2013 at a completely different time and yes I uploaded it before) and I barely saw the Thames. But it was as if the bad crop from the day and night before were all suffering from a heavy hangover (which they probably were) and all that was left was the family and community orientated events. I really felt like I belonged here, in this town, and it does not happen very often. In the afternoon my wife gave a concert as a member the local orchestra in the park by the Thames. Typing this, I guess we are really locals now. Anyway, so she gave her concert in the afternoon and then in the evening we went to see an operetta by Offenbach, showing live on a screen, in the park again. The night was cool, but I had thought to bring warm clothes and even the discomfort of sitting of the ground and getting pins and needles had some kind of charm. Watching a show outdoor simply enhances the experience with a unique atmosphere. It just felt right. So I am surprised to say, but it was the best Sunday I had in a very long time.

Dreaming of train journeys

I took this picture during last year's holiday in Devon, it was on the steamed train journey from Totnes to Buckfastleigh and back. I am watching and rewatching these pictures from my last holiday, because I already long for my future holidays in York. And also because one of the things I love about these kind of holidays is the long train journeys. I kid you not. I just love travelling by train. And I learned that there is a National Railway Museum in York, so I know of at least one thing to visit. These holidays, like last year's, might be train themed.

It might be because I am looking forward to experience the exciting long train journeys leading to a new destination (to me at least) that I have recently borrowed from the local library a brochure dating back from 1973, about the history of the local train line. It used to cost twenty pences, as it says on the bottom of the front page. But it is a most precious things. The information may be given in a dry manner, but looking at these old black and white pictures of train stations I know so well, see them in a different light, see also how the train line has not sadly dwindled here is fascinating. It is another kind of journey, through time, that I also long for.

800 years of Magna Carta

In case you have not noticed it with Google Doodle, but the Magna Carta is 800 years old today. As I am a medievalist, I had to mention it on this blog. I cannot be trivial all the time. I am of two minds about the celebrations of the Magna Carta (about which I am no specialist, by the way, in case you wanted to ask me questions on the matter). I am glad history is remembered and celebrated, and it is always good that we remember such essential event. Heck, I was an academic in another time, I am happy academia itself has a bit of spotlight with this anniversary! And as a republican, I am also happy when a monarch is humiliated, so if only for this it deserves to be celebrated.

On the other hand, it is also an exercise of English self-flattery. Don't get me wrong, the Magna Carta is an important document for the history of this nation and the Western world. But it is absurd to imply, as I have heard by some commentators on the TV (or the telly as we call it here), that the UK has been a democracy and its people free for the last 800 years. I also find a downright aberration the English centrist view of history that has been displayed with the anniversary. It reminds the history seminars of my Master degree, when the teacher (English) had to explain to the British students that the end of the War of the Roses did not mark the end of the Middles Ages, contrary to what they have been told at school. Because in a wider European context, the War of the Roses was absolutely meaningless and did not change the time period. Yesterday, I heard a historian saying that other similar texts existed in other European kingdoms. So let's not forget this as well.

Sodom and Regatta

This weekend, our usually quiet little town is hosting a regatta. One of the apparent advantages of dwelling by the River Thames. I said apparent, because I think now the regatta is more a curse than a blessing. I blogged about it back in 2010. Basically, it may have been a great event at some point in the town's history, but it is now an excuse for people of all ages to get seriously wasted on alcohol while they wear fancy clothes. I went out twice yesterday, once in the afternoon, once in the evening. The first time there were many people, men in suits and women in posh dresses, all wearing bottles of beer, cocktail or wine, already drinking. When I went out in the evening to buy groceries, they were the same people, from teenagers to elderly, all smartly dressed, all drunk. I might have been the only sober person in the street.

I did not feel in danger, but I remained aware of any potential danger. There was a heavy police presence. I saw one police officer helping a drunken woman in her forties (I think) who was for some reason prostrated by the entrance of a shop, looking in pain, although I could not see any wound or anything like this. How can someone get drunk in high heels? If most people seemed happily drunk, some teenagers may have sounded somewhat aggressive. I don't know how it was in the pubs. As I said, although there was no clear and present danger, I remained aware of the possibility, so I did not spend much time out. And I felt glad to learn Krav Maga. It was also at the back of my mind the whole time: this is why I decided to learn self-defense. I had a thought about one of fellows Krav Maga-er, who is a barmaid in a local pub and who I know was working tonight. I understood yesterday why she decided to learn herself. So that's it, yesterday this quiet little town by the Thames seemed to have been transformed into a modern Sodom and Gomorrah. Go figure.

Fish & Chips Friday

It happens to me from time to time, it happened recently: I had a huge crave for fish and chips. It was satisfied yesterday, as we went to the best fish and chips shop in town (there are only two, actually) and I bought this meal for myself. On Friday, it is fitting to have fish and chips. It was delicious, but lacking in malt vinegar. A shame: I specifically asked to pour an ocean of malt vinegar on the dish. After all, you can't drown a fish, especially not when it has been deep fried like this one. And you need the malt vinegar to unclog your arteries with all the fat you eat in a portion like this one. Well, that is my rationale regarding it anyway.

So my fish and chips craving has been satisfied again, in spite of the disappointment regarding the condiment. It should not reappear for a few weeks. With any luck I will only crave fish and chips during our stay in York, where apparently, from what I once heard/read they make the best fish and chips of the country. I will try to have them on a Friday, just because it is fitting.

Tickle Attack!

Yesterday, my wife and I had dinner at her friend's place. There was her friend, her friend's partner, their daughter (Buffy's owner) and the friend of daughter who was having a sleepover at their place. The two girls love each other like sisters and they grew very fond of us for some reason. They are also very naughty, especially together. At some point, I started laughing at some joke on TV and they thought I had a funny laugh. My laugh is pretty normal as far as I know, but they thought it was weird and wanted to hear it again. So after whispering to each other some cunning and devious plan, they turned to me as I was sitting on the sofa, screaming "Tickle Attack!" and started tickling me. The two of them. Two nine years old girls were tickling me right on the neck, where I am very ticklish and pretty helpless. So I laughed uncontrollably, a different laugh, nervous, sometimes frantic and high pitched. The girls went hysterical and so did my wife and my wife's friend. "It's hilarious just watching him," said Buffy's owner, which might sound like a mere observation, but just for the vocabulary used, deserves to be a great unknown line. My wife even took a video of me, forty seconds out of five minutes of pure tickling torture. Thankfully, she won't Facebook or YouTube it, because she wouldn't do this with other people's children. Because it was very humiliating. But it made our evening. The girls have always been merciless towards me, but this beats everything they ever done. I kind of dread what they have in mind for me next.

RIP Christopher Lee

I am late reporting the news, however I could not ignore it, because of my love and admiration for the man and his work: Christopher Lee died recently, at the venerable age of 93. He played Dracula in many movies, he resurrected from pretty much every type of deaths, from getting a stake through his heart to being burned by sunlight, but he could not survive old age. More than a popular actor, Lee was a polymath and a true artist. I enjoyed so many of his roles, especially his Hammer ones. He played so many iconic characters, was often the best thing about many flicks of sub-qualities, but for me he will first and foremost be the Count. Because although Lee had many different roles, and Dracula was played by many different actors, Lee is the only one who actually bothered making the character true to the spirit of the novel, for which he had a great respect. When I read the novel, Dracula has the traits and the voice of Christopher Lee. That said, I will never limit his monumental career to the role I prefer. And I intend to watch more and more movies with Christopher Lee, of all genres. In the months leading to Halloween, I will treat myself with a few Hammer flicks. In the meantime, here is one of his interviews which I find fascinating:

New Spectre teaser

This acrylic painting was done by (local?) artist Teresa Illman. It is titled James Bond/Daniel Craig and it is of course inspired from a scene of Skyfall. I wonder if Ms Illman is into the movie, the character or the actor. But in any case, fan art doesn't get any better than this and looking at the picture I felt a connection with the artist as a fellow Bond fan. A Bond fan that is getting very excited as Spectre is getting filmed and its release date is getting closer and closer. And we are getting more news about the upcoming movie. Recently it was a first glimpse at Christoph Waltz as the (most likely) villain of the piece, today we have the new TV spot teaser. You can see it below. There is a lot from the original teaser, which I loved, but also a good deal of new footage.

I have a few observations about it:

-Obviously, this one is far more action orientated. The set pieces are impressive and everything looks very exciting.
 - Hinx seems to be one nasty piece of work: at what appears to be a SPECTRE meeting, he dispatches someone by twisting his neck like a chicken.
-Bond is depicted more like a seducer, as you first see him getting closer to the character of Léa Seydoux, then Monica Bellucci's.
-There is a beautiful feeling of danger coming from that scene between Bond and Lucia Sciarra: she is warning him about imminent danger... which does not stop him from coming at her.
-The classic line: "Bond, James Bond" delivered by Craig here is the best in a long time.

So here we have it. What did you think of it? I am enthusiastic, as you can tell. Oh, and for the observers, I left another bit of homage to James Bond on this post. Try to find it.

Question existentielle (262)

The Krav Maga updates

I am back from my sixth class of Krav Maga. I have little new to say, in fact pretty much nothing that you have not read before in my previous posts. But hey, I am learning and improving. We have a new student, some guy who is tall and muscular and seem to know what he's doing. I feel like I am a dwarf sometimes compared to my fellow wannabe warriors. All the same, it was good fun. We had to hit a pad held by another student today (foot, fist, elbow, repeat) as hard as we could. The instructor did not like the way I was sort of hitting the pad at first. Because as hard as one can should be as hard as one can. I was taking it easy for two reasons I think: 1)I feel like I have little strength in my arms or fist and 2)the girl holding the pad was a 18 years old shorter and smaller than me. I did not want to hurt her. Which is silly because it is a darn pad I was hitting, not her. But then the coach said 1)he'd make me do twenty press ups if I was not to go harder and 2)told me to imagine that he was the pad. I think he thought because he's hard I'd be vindictive. But I think he's a nice guy, so instead I imagined some nasty villain from an action movie or some old pulp fiction or something. I worked with archetypes (see, I am an intellectual even when I do martial arts and I make good use of my past life as a doctor in literature). It worked just as well, because I kicked the darn pad hard and the instructor was quite happy. We did another similar exercise afterwards, when we were held back at the belly by a karate belt held by a student. I did not need to be asked twice that time. When you have to work for it, to earn every punch you throw, you just become harder at punching. So these were the Krav Maga updates this week.
