Walking on the dry leaves
I was getting a bit desperate yesterday, feeling dreadful about this summery weather, in the wrong state of mind. It has been cooling down a little bit today. Still not the kind of crisp, cold autumn day I long for, but we are getting there. I didn't wear a coat, but at least I didn't need sun lotion. And I did something very autumnal, something that cheered me up on a tiredsome Monday. I walked on the dry leaves on the ground. There are plenty of leaves near the place where I work, so I can take a few minutes at lunch time and walk around. Not exactly as nice as a walk in the wood, but hearing the dry leaves cracking under my feet felt great. It felt right.

We've been having unusually summery weather here lately. Warmer than some of our July days. I hate it. Colder temperatures are promised for the weekend.

I remember my first autumn away from home at college. I grew up in the relatively seasonless san francisco bay area, but I went to college in washington state, where the autumns are crisp.
I was living out of a fairly posh apartment across the street from the office building that contained the school, and there was a line of huge maple trees along the street in front of the apartment complex. A week or two before Halloween it literally turned into a carpet of red and orange leaves. I had a lot of fun crunching up and down.
I live in Oregon now, and it's still pretty brisk. My brother moved up here a couple years ago around Halloween, and brought his boston terrier with. Shortly after moving, she got out, and we caught her rushing around neck deep in leaves, laughing her head off.
Good times in leaves.
We had a long summer this year, and though it's finally cooled off, it's all cold and rainy right now. Leaves haven't had a chance to fall.
Still, there's time.
