Beautiful English Fog

I made the mistake this morning to go to work, even though I had a nasty cold. Because I thought I was coughing less and was overall feeling much better. It was a mistake overall: if it started easy enough, the cold quickly took over and I was feeling pretty awful bu five o'clock. I nearly missed the train because I decided to go at the last minute. On the plus side, however, I could witness a thick English fog like I hadn't seen in a long while. The proper stuff, not merely a mist. I took a few snapshots with my mobile and I decided to share this one with you. Now I'm not obsessed with all sorts of weathers, but fog has a special place in my heart. So here it is.

Plateaucalypse

I dreamt of berserkers (!)

Maybe it was because I am sick and it agitates my sleep, maybe it is because I had toasts with honey as my only supper (as I am sick I couldn't eat anything else)... But anyway yesterday, I went to bed at 9:30, ridiculously early for me, and after I fell asleep, shivering... I dreamt of berserkers. Hairy bearded warriors covered with bear skins. I read a lot of Norse mythology and sagas where they are heavily featured, sometimes getting telepathically linked to bears, so it kind of makes sense they end up haunting my dreams. I had also watched recently this YouTube video from Lindybeige on the subject, which is about... Berserkers. I wish I had a good enough memory of the dream, although it was like all dreams, especially induced by fever, very confused. But in any case, I dreamt of berserkers. How cool is that?

Stare of the psychocat

Last time I blogged about Domino, I said that he was a master of emotional blackmail. He is also a bit of a psychocat. I don't say this to be mean, but this is the stare he has when, in the morning, he asks my wife for a second breakfast, after I gave him his first. Although there is never any second breakfast, he's not shy of pawing us and has these eyes. These devilish eyes. We love him to bits anyway and even as a psychocat he is so cute.

Terrible March

I mentioned last Friday that March had been particularly nasty that day. Well, it did not quieted down: it has been cold since then and on Sunday it had snowed in the night, it rained in the afternoon, then we had more rain. Beware the Ides of March. I say it every year, it has always been pure wisdom. Like the first of September is for me the beginning of autumn, I consider the first of March to be the beginning of Spring. But since I am a child, I don't think is a lovely season, when nature comes alive again. For me, nature wakes up after a long sleep and is temperamental and nasty like a hungry bear after its slumber. I love March though. I love what's in March. I even love its more terrible aspects, its hail and rain and changing weather. There is beauty in it. Nevertheless, it's far from a nice month.

"Guess who?"

As my French speaking (or French reading) readers know already, the birds mangers in my parents' back garden have been visited by a woodpecker. My father sent me a few pictures, the latest being this one, which was taken during the woodpecker's last visit. Apart from the fact that this shows that it is still a snowy winter where they are, a woodpecker always reminds me of... Guess who? yes, the Woody from my childhood and my favourite toon character. And I know I blogged about this last year. All the same, it feels surreal to see a woodpecker in a familiar environment, in the family garden. The only woodpecker I knew when I was a child was Woody.

Dame Judi Dench Walk

Here is another picture I took in York which I wanted to share. If you did not know about it already, Dame Judi Dench was born in York and was honoured by the city by having her name given to a walk by the river. We walked on it a few times before I noticed this sign. She played in many movies, blockbusters even, but for me she is first and foremost a thespian. Who actually and ironically I have yet to see on stage. But in any case, it is nice to see her talent and renown be recognized York while she is still alive to appreciate it. And it is a beautiful walk too.

Salut Bonhomme

Friday Doom

Well, that is perfidious March for you (beware the Ides of March). Before walking home after work, I had to make a detour to visit a house (because my wife and I are thinking of moving) and to go there I had to walk through streets I am not familiar with. Dark streets. Nothing special so far, nothing too sinister. But as I was walking, it started raining. Then it hailed. And it was windy and nasty. I managed to regain my composure when we met the estate agent, but all my way to the place, I was in a very bad mood, like if it was Doomsday Friday or something. After the visit and a short walk in the then furious hail, my wife and I were completely soaked. Way to start the weekend. But let's look at the bright side: now warm and dry inside I feel very much relaxed and the weekend can only get better. And if it was unpleasant to feel, I do think miserable weather is impressive to watch, especially rain.

Dublin wisdom

Maybe I am just a puppet here, easily and stupidly used, played if you will, by the dark and cynical forces of the Great Capital. Because I am shamelessly posting on social medias for free advertisement from a spirits company, but I saw a while ago in the local Irish pub this mat from Jameson and I thought it was absolutely brilliant. "In Dublin three is never a crowd, it's a start." It makes me want to go to Dublin. A visit is long overdue. Oh and have a shot of Jameson. I am that easily manipulated. I have been wanting to share this on Vraie Fiction and thought that since March is the month of Saint-Patrick's Day, it was a good time to finally upload the picture here.

The eyes of a cat

I know I blogged about Domino not very long ago (well, sort of, I was blogging about tuxedo cats anyway) but I thought I'd share this picture with you tonight.A few weeks ago, he was not very easy, being very demanding, especially in the middle of the night, and a bit of a bully. Then he calmed down and became adorable again.  He is still demanding though. I took this picture yesterday, when I was holding a fish stick for him. And you can see how much he wanted it. The eyes of pure greed. Sometimes when he asks for food, he has the eyes of a psychocat (I'll show you another picture one day). On this one, it is merely emotional blackmail. Domino is a master of emotional blackmail. But I love him all the same.

Saint David's Day and me

First and foremost, for those who do not know, the first of March is of course Saint David's Day, the national day of Wales, because Saint David is their patron saint. Google commemorated it with an absolutely magnificent Doodle, with the Welsh red dragon hanging on the L and daffodils. I had to share it. I owe a lot to Welsh culture, being specialized in medieval Arthurian literature. The most vivid memory I have of Saint David's Day comes from when I was at uni, doing an amateur production of Le malade imaginaire. Many of the cast were Welsh. At the end of the performance, each threw daffodils at the crowd, wearing a Welsh flag. I remember it to this day and at that moment I wished I had been Welsh. I loved their flag so much that I bought one, which is now somewhere at my parents' home. I wish I could have it here today.
