Giant Snakes and Ladders

Today we went to a little fête for charity nearby. There were some games for children, including this giant version of Snakes and Ladders. It is pretty much the same as the normal board game, except on a large scale and with some squares having extra variables (move an extra space, double roll of the dice next time, etc.). Nobody was playing, so Wolfie had some fun running around the board and throwing the dice. My brothers and I used to play Snakes and Ladders a while ago, it was one of the first board games we ever played I think. It gets old quickly, like all games based on pure luck, but I always loved its imagery, with menacing hissing snakes. Some Snakes and Ladders boards can look almost scary. I think the enjoyment of the game comes from the board itself, not the simplistic gameplay. When Wolfie is old enough, I think I will find one good set of Snakes and Ladders.

Karribean Kola

Sometimes I buy things out of cheer curiosity, because I'm in an exotic mood or I want to make trivial discoveries from trivial experiences, or whatever. So last week, I found in one of the corner shops a soft drink called Karribean Kola, by a company called KA Drinks. Apparently their drinks are based on traditional Jamaican recipes. But what caught my attention was the cool blue colour, the weird spelling and the relatively low sugar content (for a soft drink). I thought it could go for a cheap Coca Cola substitute for the hot days of summer. After trying it, I'm not sure if I like it or not. It's very sweet and they went really heavy on the vanille flavour. It tastes more like a cream Soda than a cola. Still, it has a cool and exotic name.

Fermont

Ça l'a donc vraiment fasciné.

Sugar, Sugar

I have a confession to make: I know nothing of The Archies but their song Sugar, Sugar. Which I never considered to be a good song. That said, I find it catchy and I do enjoy it from time to time, especially on a hot summer day like it is today. Don't ask me why. Maybe because of that scene from The Simpsons. Maybe because it is so terribly silly and thus easy to listen. So here it is anyway. Promise, next time the music I share on this blog will be better.

Fire Catcher

If you are looking for a poison for the Summer and if, like me, you find blonde beers lacking flavours, I have a suggestion for you: Fire Catcher by Wychwood Brewery. Yup, them again. Of all the brewery's products, it is one of the most difficult to find (from my experience anyway), but it is a proper summertime beer. Darkish for a blonde, light in alcohol, with some citrus aroma, it is most definitely a summertime beer. Not the best from Wychwood Brewery, but not insipid enough to feel ashamed of drinking it. Fire Catcher may be blonde, but it is a dirty blonde and perfect to drink on a hot summer day.

Halloween looming

I told you very recently how spooky I find Sarah' Scribbles. By this I mean that she seems to read my mind when she draws a comic strip. Well, it happened again with this brand new strip. The first week of summer is almost over. And what do I think about? You guessed it. And she did too. I knew she was as Halloween obsessed as I am, but this is uncanny. On the more positive side, reading her, I feel almost like a normal human being.

The new hotel by the train station

I took this picture at the National Railway Museum in York, I am sharing it today because I love sharing pics from my favourite museum in the world and because it kind of goes well with this bit of good news: after years of waiting, we finally have a new hotel by the local train station. The last one dated back from the fifties or sixties and had been demolished a long time ago. The new one is a Travelodge, which means it's bland, but most likely comfy enough and relatively cheap. What it means for us specifically is that my parents and my wife's parents will have the choice of a a cheaper hotel that nevertheless has good standards, literally a walk away from the grandson. We might check it out this weekend.

A police raid from the air?

This afternoon at work, we suddenly heard the sound of a helicopter flying low. We heard it getting closer and closer, then we saw it flying low again and again over the small business park where we are. It looked like a police helicopter, but we could not be certain. It would make sense if it was. To what purpose did it circle ominously above our heads, I have no idea. No siren was heard during or after, it was just this helicopter flying low and buzzing like a clunky metallic mosquito. I have to say, I found the whole thing quite exciting, if its dénouement or lack of was anticlimactic. This is the kind of stuff I read about in crime news. I know that police helicopters can be used for surveillance exercises, but they can also be prominent in major raids, drug busts and anti-terrorist operations, things like that. This is creative material for crime fiction. So I will try to remember this little episode for future use.

Strawberry shortcake

My dad sent me pictures of small strawberry shortcakes he made recently. Here is one of them, very posh in its bowl, even though the dessert itself is kind of messy. I wonder if you can see the cake underneath the strawberries and the whipped cream. You can also see sprinkled maple sugar on it. Strawberry shortcakes is maybe the dessert I associate most with this time of year and is a family tradition. Come to think of it, I also associate the shortcake with strawberries at the exclusion of all other fruits. I wish I could have had one.

First Blast of Summer

We were having a relatively cool summer, until today, when for the first time the temperatures went up to mid their twenties. Not enough to a heatwave, but enough to feel it, especially in the middle of the day. And it was not very sunny. It appears that summer has finally decided to be summery. Well, it would be the case if it had a conscience of course. I am okay with this for now, I don't mind a few hot days. I just don't want it to me like this for weeks. I was pretty happy with what we had so far.

A Gathering of Expats

As you may know, today is Saint John the Baptist's Day, also Quebec's National Day. I have been celebrating it as an expatriate since 2007, pretty much all by myself. Of course, now there is Wolfie, in this household, so I am not really the only Quebecker here, but he is still too young to understand or appreciate. Today, I found at total random that the Quebec government Office in London has a Twitter account and through this account I saw that they had organized a little celebration last Saturday, for expats and non Quebeckers. I should have thought about it before. I mean using social medias to know where and when my fellow expats live and when they gather for the 24th of June. Next year, I will see if our little family can go to some of these parties to celebrate our people. Wolfie will then be old enough to understand a bit more and more importantly to keep some memories of it. Sure, it will not be like the big concerts we have at home, but it could be fun.
