Fever

No, no, don't worry, I don't have a fever and I am feeling fine (touch wood). I thought I would give some reading suggestion for this age of confinement, as we should all have plenty of more time to read now. If nothing else, the pandemic would have given us that. So the book I would suggest you to get your hands on is Fever by South African crime writer Deon Meyer. Ironically enough, it is not crime fiction but scifi. You might find it too close to comfort, but it is very topical. After a pandemic that destroyed most of the world's population, Willem Storm and his son Nico try to restore civilization in post-apocalyptic South Africa. It may sound cliché, but Meyer really did his research and it shows. This is very believable, and sadly all the more so these days. But like his other novels, it has soul and heart and in spite of the genre, it is almost devoid of misanthropy. In fact, reading this it somewhat restored my faith in the human race.

RIP Ghyslain Tremblay

The next train

I took this picture at the National Railway Museum in York, which is currently closed due to the pandemic. It is very sad, but it could not be avoided. I wanted to show it to Wolfie, it will probably not happen this year. We will not go there any time soon, neither will we take the train any time soon. In fact, we were meant to travel by train to see some friends the first weekend of the lockdown. It is now postponed indefinitely. It is one of the many things that I miss from our life before COVID-19. I wonder when we will have our next "proper" train journey. Whenever that is, I made a promise to enjoy it fully. Until then, there are the (many) railway sets Wolfie plays with every day in the living room and elsewhere at home. That should keep us occupied (and entertained).

Guerilla Grooming

Well, with guerilla living and the guerilla working comes eventually guerilla grooming. Because of the pandemic and since I am working from home, I have been wearing old wornout clothes, for one, I have obviously not visited a barber shop and will not any time soon and started shaving... far less often than I usually would. It is extremely rare on working days, but these are not ordinary times. So every day that passes makes me look more and more like a guerillero. It's like the new dad look, without the happiness. I am seriously considering buying myself a clipper for the hair, because I don't want to end up really looking like I live in the jungle.

Holy Monday

In case you haven't noticed, this Holy Monday, so there is less than a week until Easter. I used to find this week very long, I wonder if working from home will change my perspective on it. It is the first Holy Monday in a long while, I think a decade or so, which I will spend at home. So far, I can't complain. I might find it more relaxing (I have been so far), I sure hope this day and week go faster.

First read in the garden

Today, temperatures were about 20 degrees, a first this year. So for the first time in a long while (I cannot remember when exactly), I read in the garden. Only a few pages, as Wolfie soon kept me busy asking for my attention, but it was still tremendously enjoyable. Still, I think I can enjoy staying at home for a bit longer.

Vieille Provence

Gun Play

A few years ago, I bought some cheap plastic toy revolvers for some reason, you know the kind that is in a cowboy outfit for kids, with a plastic star, plastic ammos and plastic holsters. I had stored them when we moved house and yesterday Wolfie stumbled on them. I explained to him what it was and I think he quite liked them, although he mostly wanted me to handle the plastic guns. His mother was not keen on it, because she thinks even plastic revolvers are associated with violent objects. But I spent my childhood playing cowboys, cops and robbers and war with such toy guns, so I was quite happy that Wolfie showed interest in them. His maternal grandfather seemed quite happy when he saw his grandson playing with the revolvers as well. So gun play seems to be something that transcends generations. And I will say something again: being the father of a boy, it is often living your childhood a second time.

Saint George (or saint Michael?) and the Dragon

My dad recently sent me this picture. He took it at the Roskilde Cathedral in Denmark, which we visited thirty years ago or so. This is a 800 year old clock, still working. Or at least it was working when we visited it. I barely remembered seeing this ancient clock. You can see on it a depiction of Saint George or Saint Michael killing the Dragon. We are not sure: researches we made gave us contradictory information. My money is on saint George as I think you can see a princess somewhere and he's on horseback. If I am right, then we saw in Denmark a dramatic representation on a clock of the single most famous exploit of the patron saint of Englishmen. I thought about sharing the picture for Saint George's Day, but I could not wait. I want to know if it is Saint George or Saint Michael, for one and thought I would ask it here. I also thought that either way, a 800 year old clock with a dramatic depiction of a fight against a dragon is just too cool not to share as soon as possible. So here it is.

Birthday by proxy

Yesterday evening, as we were trying to put Wolfie to bed, he got quite upset when he learned that it was going to be my birthday soon, but not his. He thinks that it is about time we celebrated his birthday as it has been a while. I tried to explain to him that we celebrate each birthday only once a year and it will soon be daddy's turn, and also that, in any case, he can still enjoy someone else's birthday. And that there is also at least one of the presents that I receive which will truly be for him to enjoy as well (my wife always makes sure of it). And there is one thing that is difficult to explain, especially in words understandable to a three year old boy: once you have kids, it's always all about them. Every birthday, every celebration. And this will be the case until they have children themselves. And that is fine like this.

The perfect tea mug?

Well, let's talk about something else than you know what, just to change our minds a bit. I have recently rediscovered all the tea mugs I bought at David's Tea over the years. I don't have that many, in fact here I only have four. The one you see on the picture was the very first I bought from them. It was from their 2013 autumn collection. It has various birds, including an owl, squirrels and foxes on it. To this day, it is my "autumn mug" thus maybe my favourite tea mug every and the one I go for most of the time. When I see it and drink from it, I remember that autumn is getting closer and closer every day and that I only have to be patient and wait for it. David's Tea calls this model the Perect Tea Mug, because it has the perfect shape, can contain the perfect volume of tea, all the necessary accessories for an optimal experience, etc. This one is the Perfect Tea Mug for me also because of its look and the what it reminds me of.

April Fool's Day

I don't know if anyone noticed, but we are now the first of April, therefore April Fool's Day. These days, with COVID-19, I don't think anybody wants to fool anyone. Or else we all feel like we are the fool of circumstances beyond our control, of a cosmic joke. Sorry, I am rambling, but it is the first thing that came on my mind thinking about the first of April. I promise, my next posts will be more cheerful.
