Domino at home

At first, we thought it would be very difficult: the first night we spent in our new home, Domino was restless. It had taken us ages to settle him in the old flat, we thought we were in for something similar. Well, it turned out that after the first night, our feline friend settled in with surprising ease. He now already has a number of favourite spots, including the window ledge, as you can see on the picture. Cats are territorial creatures and it does not take them long to decide what is their domain.

Cible mouvante...

Bashful Fox

Well, I had promised to myself that I would do it and yesterday I finally did: I bought another Jellycat plush toy to my son. This time, it is Bashful Fox. Jellycat makes a good deal of foxes, this one is my favourite. So Bashful Fox is the latest addition to our son's plush menagerie. Since I haven't found a wolf yet. Still, a fox is cool and this one is very cute. My wife wants to decorate his bedroom with a woodland theme, which I think is a great idea, we might as well give a plush animals that reflect the forest a bit. But more importantly, Bashful Fox, which I will need to find a new name, is very cuddly. Foxes were among my favourite animals as a child, certainly my favourite forest animals and I think it might be the same for my son.

Oxfordshire Folk Tales

When I go to The Wallingford Bookshop, I never fail to find treasures I could find nowhere else. My last visit was no different: I stumbled upon Oxfordshire Folk Tales and bought it on the spot. Wallingford being in Oxfordshire (albeit only very recently in its history), it made sense to find something about Oxfordshire lore in its independent bookshop. Okay, so as a disclaimer I must confess: I have not read it yet. But this is a book about folklore and tales from a specific region of England, so there is a fairly good chance that I will find in it some stories I have never read or even never heard about and this will fuel my imagination for months to come. Whether it is great, or even good literature or not is beside the point: I am a sucker for old tales and obscure, sometimes forgotten stories. Every time I travel to a region of England I try to get my hands on some books of local legends and I am never disappointed when I find one. So I have a good feeling about this one. And it has a rabbit (or a hare?) on it. And that is cool.

Welsh rarebit with a twist

I blogged before about Welsh rarebits, one of my favourite pieces of British gastronomy and my favourite comfort food. Well, I renewed today with the dish in a local café, although one of its variants: the Buck rarebit. It has a poached egg added on it and that is the only difference. The egg is not absolutely necessary, although I love the taste of warm yolk on a toast, but as usual it is the melted cheese that makes the rarebit so delicious. Rarebits are best appreciated on a cold day, which was not the case today, but all the same it was not too hot to spoil the experience and it was nice rediscovering the dish, as I haven't had one in ages. My wife thought I was embarrassing taking yet another picture of my meal for the blog, but I wanted to share it here, just for the sake of it. So here it is.

A Mountain Warehouse in town

Here is another bit of trivial local news that actually made my day and might make this town a better place to live in. My readers know that for some obscure reasons I love the products of Mountain Warehouse, even though I don't do outdoor activities much, I mean by this that I am not a trekker or into outdoor sports and activities. In fact, I only ever bought one single clothe from them, a green fleece, and it was because it was reduced to clear. All the same, I am very fond of the fleece and love their comfy clothes and since I purchased that fleece I have been wanting to buy more products from them. So anyway, my wife told me yesterday that apparently they were going to open a Mountain Warehouse shop in this town. Brilliant! For once we will have an affordable shop and not an expensive upmarket boutique! And more importantly: a shop I love to begin with.

Of early birds and night owls

We had to wake up early this morning because our new fridge was being delivered before 08:00AM. I don't even wake that early to go work, let alone on a Saturday morning. But we did it, after a night struggling to sleep as we don't go to bed early at weekends. And as soon as the delivery men were gone we went back to bed and had a long, long nap. We woke before midday to discover that a friend (the father of the Ticklers)had mowed the lawn of our garden, which was looking like a jungle. Since he helped us moving that was another proof of his generosity. Moral of the story: I'm most definitely a night owl and I owe a good deal to an early bird.

Deon Meyer

Today is the 4th of July and this means a very special day. I don't know if any of you noticed. Anyone? Okay, the title of this post gave it away (otherwise you wouldn't have guessed I'm sure): it is the birthday of South African crime writer Deon Meyer. He wrote some of my favourite crime fiction novels and I cannot think of a single book I have read of him (so far) where I have been disappointed or even underwhelmed. Not only are his books entertaining, they manage to remain intelligent and plausible at the same time. Meyer made me discover a completely new culture of crime fiction and I wanted to wish him happy birthday on this blog. So here it is, happy birthday maestro.

Guerilla blogging

You have noticed that I am blogging more sporadically. It is because we are moving house at the moment. It is exciting but stressful and one of its drawback is that I cannot go on the internet as often as I wished. I will be out of the internet for a while by the way, so do not worry if you don't hear from me. When I do blog these days, if I blog, it will be when I have a few minutes break to steam off a bit, or if I go to a café with free Wifi. I call this guerilla blogging.

"Dante m'a toujours emmerdé"

Tea on the beach?

I took this picture from the Facebook page of David's Tea. I'm sure they don't mind, I give them plenty of free publicity. Anyway, this photo was uploaded to advertise their new collection of mugs, apparently called "beachy keen". I love tea all year round and virtually everywhere and at any time except heatwave and even then. I had tea on a hot Summer day, but never on the beach, although I can see the rationale behind it. I mean with cool breezes coming from the sea, and the smell of it in the air, it just calls for a nice hot cuppa. I remember one of my housemates in Liverpool of Middle Eastern origins, who told me that tea was perfect for summer days as the hot beverage actually cooled you down. Something to do with metabolism. I don't know about that, but I could certainly drink tea on the beach, and not only iced tea. And as usual, David's Tea makes great designs for their mugs.

Of Champagne, cats and new homes...

For those who read French, I already blogged a bit about our new move. Because yes, today the exchanged has been made and we are now the new owner of a house. Our first property. We received the keys... and a complimentary bottle of champagne. So we know what to drink on our house warming party. Domino seems pretty oblivious to the move and all these boxes, full or empty (we still have a lot to pack) that are taking more and more space. But he noticed the Champagne bottle and was very curious (eager?) about it. My wife took this picture today and published it on Facebook. I wrote this comment: "Better get home before Domino nicks all the champagne." Thankfully, he had not even started, nevertheless this deserves to be a great unknown line. So here it is.
