Beware Walpurgis Night

As we are the last day of April, tonight is Walpurgis Night, something I celebrate on Vraie Fiction since I started this blog. It is a sort of Halloween for Springtime, one of the big dates in the year for witches' Sabbaths, ghosts and devils.Halloween is and will always be my favourite celebration of everything spooky, but Walpurgis Night is an important date nevertheless, when I can sort of start an officious countdown to it. After all, Halloween is only six months away now. As for every year, I share a picture of a witch here, the Village Hall Witch which has ben fascinating me for so long. I suspect they'll gather there tonight. It's not like they have ever been scared of pandemics in the past. This photo was taken by my wife in October 2019. It is only a part of a much larger one, which looks far more autumnal and which I will share another time, during my official countdown. Until then, keep your doors locked tonight and beware Walpurgis Night.

Merlin in Derbyshire

I took this picture at the Crich Tramway Village in Derbyshire. There is a path in the wood, a bit outside the village and there are a lot of wooden statues and creations, some representing characters and monsters from British folklore. Including this old mage on a throne.I have good reasons to believe this is Merlin. There was a sword in the stone nearby, for one (and for the record, no, the sword in the stone is not Excalibur, see my post here for more details.). It could be any other mage or wise old man, but let's face it, when you see a wizard in the woods in a medieval or pseudo medieval setting, it is either Merlin or Gandalf, and it is almost certain this one is Merlin. And as a former medievalist, I cannot wait to visit these woods again.

"Better than a Turkish barber"

I recently received from Amazon a clipper to cut cut my hair. As we are stuck in confinement due to the pandemic and there is no way in Hell I will go see a barber any time soon, even if I could, I thought I better do my hair myself. Or have my wife do it for at least part of the job. So we cut my hair on Sunday. It was a bit stressful at first, but in the end, the result is not so different from something a professional barber would do. It is true that it is not difficult to give me a haircut: I like my hair short and that's it. My wife said about the ordeal: "I think I am better than a Turkish barber". This is because last time I went to a Turkish barber, he gave me a small cut shaving the back of my neck. So yes, at least she was better than this. And this deserves to be a new great unknown line. Once the pandemic is over, I might actually carry on using the clippers. It saves us money.

Rugbytots

In these times of pandemic and lockdowns, we are trying to keep Wolfie entertained and active, which so far has been not as difficult as we had imagined. My wife learned that there are online sessions of Rugbytots, which is basically a soften down version of rugby for litle children (not only toddlers, in spite of the name). Wolfie did some before in preschool and quite enjoyed it. His maternal grandfather is very much into rugby himself and he thinks his grandson might be naturally gifted in the sport. I think he might be right, as Wolfie loves playing rough physical games with his daddy (and sometimes his mummy too).

The next Sunday roast

I took this picture back in 2019, it is one of the last Sunday roast I had in a pub. It struck me today that I cannot remember when I last had a proper pub meal, let alone a proper pub roast, and I have no idea when I will eat a Sunday roast. And I do miss it a lot. I mean we can make one here fairly easily, but I'm not a chef, and there is something about eating one in a pub.

Trouvaille

Theseus against the Minotaur

As you may know, I am a big fan of Greek mythology. I love everything about it. One of the books we received when we were young (I cannot remember if it was a gift to one of my bros or to everyone) was Gods, Men and Monsters from the Greek Myths. It was beautifully illustrated by Giovanni Caselli. My father recently scanned a few images and sent them to me. I decided to share this one with you today, showing the fight between Theseus and the Minotaur. This is one of the scariest, most menacing rendition of the Minotaur I have ever seen. This time of year I often revisit Greek mythology and this picture and others make me want to get my hands on some books on the subject.

Trackers on the screen

My readers know that I am a big fan of South African crime writer Deon Meyer. I have now read all his published books. One of my favourite of his is Trackers. You can read more about it here. As it is often the case with Meyer's work, it is as much a spy thriller as a crime novel, so you can enjoy two genres in one read. And I have now a reason to get excited about it again, as it has been adapted into a TV Series. I have seen the trailers and, while it does not look half as good as the source material, it still looks darn entertaining. Now I must find out if, when and where it will be available in the UK. Until then, here's the trailer:

The lawnmower and me

I am giving you a little bit of update about this post: I mowed the front lawn four days ago. Just the front lawn, because the back, well, I thought I could do it another time. I hate mowing the lawn. But at least now the front door does not seem to be at the end of a narrow pathway in a dangerous jungle.

One month in lockdown

Today it has been a month since this country has been in lockdown and one month since I started working from home. So far, so good, touch wood. I cannot say that it has been great and there are lots of things I miss, but overall for the reasons stated in this post, I have been pretty happy working from home. Tonight, as every Thursday night, we clapped to show our support for the people working in the NHS. Wolfie stole the show hitting a pan with a spoon. I like this little display of solidarity, it brings people together, figuratively speaking. For a minute or two, we don't feel so locked down.

Saint George against the Dragon

Happy Saint George's Day everyone! The patron saint of England and English people, even though he never set foot here. To celebrate and pay homage to him, here is a picture of a statue representing the famous combat against the dragon, the part of his legend that made him famous. My father took it in Berlin. Very dramatic, as you can see. As if we were witnessing it.
