A fox in the garden

I once blogged about garden wildlife. There are moments when one become fully conscious about what it entails in England. Can you see it on the picture? I know it's a bad one. I saw this fox yesterday night in the garden of our block. It was striking, a bit eerie, as the fox looked almost spectral in the dark. The fox looked at me with mild curiosity, I kept a distance, took a picture with flash, because I wanted to scare him away. There are cats in here and I didn't want him to harm them, although I read later that foxes rarely attack cats. I knew that I was most likely not in danger myself. The fox followed me from a distance, then left the garden for a nearby park. And that was the end of this encounter. I have seen foxes before, back when I was at uni and sometimes when I wait for the train, but I never saw one from so close, for so long and with him being conscious of my presence. I did not appreciate this meeting because of circumstances (more on this in the next few days), but it was still a fascinating encounter.

Of Cats and Tea

I made a promise to myself not to buy too many products from David's Tea because I have enough stuff from them and too little space to store them. I can buy more of their teas, but their accessories might end up cluttering the flat, like so many things do. And just when I thought I could behave, I learn on their Facebook page that they have a Feel-Good Collection which includes a cats colour changing perfect tea mug and cats infusers, one aquamarine, one azure blue. For a cat lover like me, this is shameless teasing (sorry for the pun). I guess I could buy the infusers, they barely take any space, but the perfect tea mug might just be one mug too many. Although I could give the mug as a gift to someone else and make this person feel good. But then I know I'd buy one for myself anyway. So I am having a terrible dilemma. Why am I such a sucker?

Question existentielle (278)

The seed of doubt

In the mood for a bit of deep humour? Well, maybe not that deep, but it is certainly a great punchline and an even greater word play. I sometimes come across the webcomic Cyanide & Happiness, on Facebook or Twitter. I often find this webcomic very funny, but this one just struck me as brilliant. So I decided to share it with you.

A view from the train

I took this picture this morning from the train going to work. It was an unusually cold morning for this year that is being unusually warm, temperatures were close to freezing, there was frost on the ground and mist all around. I barely read my book, I just watched the fields by the railway. What you see further away is the River Thames. You don't see the river looking like this in London. To truly appreciate the Thames, you must go outside London and away from big cities. I took only one picture and it does not give justice to the moment. Simply magnificent. So I thought I would share it on the blog.

Patience, patience...

New discoveries about Domino

My wife recently discovered a few things about our resident cat Domino. She spoke with an old lady who lives on ground floor and her son. She has limited mobility and sometimes needs a wheelchair. We knew she was sometimes letting Domino in and spending the afternoon with her, we had pondered to talk to her for a while, but were hesitant as we didn't want to be perceived as catnappers. On the contrary, she was really glad we are looking after him. She calls him Pussyfat and I hope it is not since we started feeding him. Apparently, he does not eat much with her. He is also called Smudge by her helper's children. He also loves hunting birds in the garden. Apparently, he once came to her flat covered with blood from one of his preys. This comes as no surprise to us. Domino just looks and acts like a hunter. Anyway, he seems to be doing little else at her place than sleep, which is exactly what he does here, apart from eating or asking for food. Which he does in no uncertain way, as you can see on this picture. It makes me wonder if he doesn't see us merely as conveniences.

An old room revisited

There was a surprise for the Krav Maga class tonight: as there was problems with the usual training rooms we use, we trained in... the room where I used to do my acting class five years ago. Last time I had been there was in April 2011. I never thought I'd see this room again, at least not in these circumstances. I am a better actor than I am a fighter, but all the same, I enjoyed it tremendously tonight partially because it felt good being back on familiar ground... or on a familiar stage, so to speak. It is a lovely place, a bit small for sport or martial arts, but spacious enough when in the acting class. It is an old room with lots of old paintings (Victorian?), a nice wooden floor, large glass doors that open on a balcony. It is absolutely idyllic. Doing contact combat there made me feel like in a James Bond movie. But it made me miss acting too, sorely. So it was bittersweet, like any moment of nostalgia.

About this Monday

We are the first Monday of January, or to be more precise the first working Monday of January. Mondays are bad enough, but I always particularly dislike the first Monday of January, because January is one of the months I like least (maybe the worst month with November). But I survived it. In fact it was far better than I expected it would turn out. Read: I didn't kill myself at work. The workflow went smoothly and if I'm shattered now, I don't feel down and shattered. For my brother PJ, it is a special Monday: his first day at a new job. So I had a thought for him. I know how any first day at work is stressful. On the plus side, it's most stimulating starting the new year with a new job than looking for one.

Grey Wolf

This painting (It's a watercolour) was made by local (?) artist John Wallis. I had seen it in an exhibition in a local church on Saturday, they always exhibit the works of local artists and artisans at some point in May. I was flicking through the pictures on my mobile phone and saw it. It is one of the paintings that had a strong impression on me. I love wolves, for one, and I love the cold, wintery wasteland in the background. It is titled Grey Wolf. As we don't have a wintery winter here and I sorely miss it, I will watch this painting to calm my longing. And I thought I would share it on my blog, because it's a really nice painting of a snarling wolf. A reason as good as any.

How to Write Good

This is something I found in one of Deon Meyer's Facebook pages. Deon Meyer is one of South Africa's greatest crime writer and one of my favourite crime writers, so I thought I would share his guidance, wherever he found these. I have seen it in different forms as an internet meme since then, with slightly different rules, but as this is how I read it initiall, I decided to share it with you like this. I thought it was really funny.

Bonne...

New Year Wishes

Happy New year everyone! I was wondering what wishes to send that would sound funny and witty, and my brother PJ gave these ones on Facebook, which I shamelessly steal because they are that great: "Happy New year, good health, success in your studies or work (or search for), all you wish for and paradise at the end of your days, which we do not wish for this year." That last line is a killer, excuse the bad pun. It is also the first great unknown line of 2016.
