Well, well, well, here is a little bit of regional version of patriotism as a blog entry. For those who don't speak French, I said in the text above that my brother reminded me through his blog that today is the 170th anniversary of the birth of the region of Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean, where I come from (my bro gives a quick history of the foundation, if you are curious). I was born in Quebec City, but grew up in Chicoutimi, capital of the region, by the beautiful Saguenay river, so deep that the arboriginal nations gave the name to what was going to be my city: Chicoutimi means, in their language "where the water is deep". My identity as a Saguenéen (that's what we call people from the Saguenay, when they are from the Lac-Saint-Jean part they are called Jeannois) has never left me. It's in my blood, literally. "You were always part of my heart, and I never missed a beat" sang Ringo Starr about Liverpool, but it would fit perfectly well my feeling about my region. It never left me: I still have the accent (so much that Montrealers identify me as Saguenéen after I say a few words), I still love the regional food (the tourtière, the cheese curds from Boivin, the blueberries which is the regional fruit, "our grape, the son of fire" wrote Félix-Antoine Savard), I still love to drink, the excessive and sometimes fiery temper, result of our pride. Because you see, people from Saguenay are proud to be proud, it's a self-sustained feeling. So that's just to say that it is "our" anniversary today. So happy birthday to us. That's what you get when crazy settlers decide to go up north. You get us.
