From the last to the first page

So I recently finished this book. Like for every book I enjoy, finishing it is difficult. Then one has to start a new one, which is always quite exciting. I often don't start the new book right after finishing one. If I can, I wait for a day. I read things I started in between, like poetry or some books of short stories (there is always one of those somewhere I started but haven't finished yet). Or I read bits of a book I read ages ago, just for fun. But I try not to start a new novel after just finishing one. It is my way of saying farewell to the fictitious world I have been exploring. And you, how do you go from the last page to the first one?

Circe, the autobiography

As I have finally finished it, here is today's reading suggestion: Circe by Madeline Miller. An autobiography of the minor goddess and the world's first witch. Veggie Carrie bought it for me on my birthday. I rarely read a novel published in the year if it's not crime fiction but I've always been into Greek mythology. And I was pleasantly surprised with Circe. Modernisation of old myths often end up to be glorified fanfics, but this one has heart. Miller gave Greek gods and heroes character and complexity. I particularly liked her take on Hermes and Odysseus. Less so with Athena, but I am a big fan of the goddess and she is in this novel more antagonistic, so this is a completely subjective criticism. Inn any case, Miller understands the dubious moral nature of Greek mythology and does not fall into cheap Manichean narrative. And she also uses Greek names, not Roman ones. During a summer heatwave, you can't go wrong going Greek.

It's coming home

Today, England's football team won against Sweden, which means they are going into the semi-finals of the World Cup. I did not watch, as I don't like football. That said, I cannot help but feel a tingle of excitement about what's happening. It is a surprise to myself. I say I don't like football, a more accurate description would be that it bores me to tears. I always felt indifferent towards it and England has been rubbish for decades, which did not help it one bit: why should I care what happens if my country of adoption can't win at the sport she invented? The only thing I could do is tease my wife. This year it's different: England is actually good, they are is actually winning, they have a fair shot at becoming champions. I cannot tease my wife anymore. And I have a young child, far too young to be interested about football, but who likely will when he will be older. Add to this that my godson is a huge football fan and is following the World Cup religiously. So I'm happy for all of them and all that World Cup nonsense is getting to me... A bit. Not enough to watch a game, but enough to just be glad of the score. So anyway, I decided to share this song I heard today, from a band I had never heard of before. It's called Three Lions, from The Lightning Seeds. But it is better known for its lyric "It's coming home". It's kinda catchy.

Notre petit loup artiste

A Smuggler for summer

I blogged before about the Smuggler from Rebellion Beer. I am a real ale drinker and I prefer my beer dark, so this ale is the one I favour during summertime, although it is available all year round. I explained my reasons in this post. I also love the label: the smuggler on it could easily be a pirate and summertime is one that always remind of piracy. I took this pint of Smuggler in a local pub and while I enjoyed it as I always do, it gave me a bit of a headache. I overestimated my stamina against the current heatwave. I must confess, a blonde beer is easier to drink when the outdoor temperature is like a oven. I guess the Smuggler would ideally be drunk on a rainy day. Which may not happen any time soon.

Besoin d'eau

What's in a uniform

I took this picture at the National Railway Museum in York and I am using it here as it illustrates this post's topic. I don't know who was wearing it in the trains or the train stations of old, but it certainly gave an aura of authority and competence to whoever was wearing it. It is almost military looking. I was thinking about it when we went last week to Armed Forces Day (albeit very briefly): what fascinated me about the army when I was a child was mainly that: the officers' uniforms. And their shining stuff, their elegant cut. It is as if we instinctively know this set the person wearing it in a special category of people. I wanted to wear one. Sometimes I wished, even now as an adult, that I had a job that required to wear such uniform. Not just any: one dark and with golden insignias. But I am not cut for army life, and I cannot picture myself working in a train, even though I love trains. And as I said, train workers don't wear these kinds of uniforms anymore anyway.

Now is the summer of our discontent

Allow me to paraphrase Shakespeare on such trivial a topic, but this is exactly how I and many of us feel. Like in many other parts of the globe, the UK have had for the last week or so very hot and very dry weather. It is in fact scorching hot. Maybe not as bad as June 2017, at least the evenings cool down a little bit sometimes (but only sometimes) but far too hot and apparently the heatwave should go on for two more weeks at least. The worst might be yet to come. I am really dreading it. Last month, I had wished for summer to stay like it was. My wish has not been granted. I did well to quote Shakespeare: this is tragic irony. Now is the summer of our discontent...

A word from the local bookshop

No I will not blog about the 4th of July and the USA today, I am not in the mood this year so will skip it. This post is about something else. I recently mentioned that I received another £5 voucher form the local bookshop. I thanked them publicly on social media and said I now had to find a book to spend it on. They sent me this kind reply: "Happy choosing. Our favourite kind of dilemma." This is nice of them and their reply deserves to be a new great unknown line. And I am waiting for your suggestions if you have any.

Working anniversary

We are commemorating many anniversaries these days. A year ago, I started my new job. I will say a dreadful cliché: how time flies. I am still getting around my new job. And I still say it's my "new" job, even though I have been there a year and I am no longer the newbie. I never celebrate working anniversaries, don't know why. I guess for me in the end it's just a job. Some people are married to theirs, I'm not. After being made redundant in my previous one and the uncertainties of the ones before, I find it is the best attitude to have. A certain detachment.

Two years of home sweet home

It is two years ago exactly that we moved in our new home, the very first house we bought. We had become officially owners the day before, but we moved in the next day. We have never really celebrated it. Too busy moving our stuff from the old flat to our new house, too busy making the house homely, too busy preparing the arrival of little Wolfie. There was no true house warming party, there probably will not be a celebration tonight. It is strange how such an important step on one's life, becoming home owner, hasn't been that exciting. But we were waiting for Wolfie, that was the big thing that was going to happen, the rest was peripheral. All the same, this is our home sweet home anniversary.

Question existentielle (330)

£5 voucher

My wife thinks I spend too much there, but last week I stopped at the bookshop after running a few errands because I thought I deserved a treat for having done something tedious. I only bought two books, but with the other ones I bought this year, it was enough to earn me a new £5 voucher. My third one this year, if I'm not mistaken. Now I need to find a book to spend it on. Feel free to give me your suggestions in the comments.
