Cate Blanchett at Cannes

Nice little bit of news that made my evening yesterday: Cate Blanchett will chair the 2018 Cannes Festival. I am as surprised as I am happy. If somebody deserves to be chairing a film festival of such renown, it is the greatest working actress in the world and no, this is not a superlative. She is the greatest. And she is a true artist, something that cannot be said of everyone in what is also an industry. I cared very little about the Cannes Film Festival in the past. This year I will try to follow it more closely.

Je peux me tromper.

How to survive January

We are at the beginning of the month I generally dislike the most, maybe even more than November. January is long, it is rough, it is depressing and it often makes me melancholic. As usual, I will try to fight the melancholy back and survive the month, at least mentally. Here are a list of things I intend to do to to achieve this goal, please feel free to give me any suggestions and your own experiences:

-Read new books. I am setting up  a new reading list which should get me spirit up and I am keeping my eyes open in case I see interesting titles. This is not new, but it always gave good results in the past.
-Work around and on the house to make it more homely. This will give me something to look forward to.
-Whenever I get home, put on some comfy old jumper and warm clothes. This is a new one, for the evenings of the week at least, when I never thought until now to change clothes when I get home from work. My wife suggested it, and I think it's a great idea.

So what are your ways of coping with January?

Snickers & Almonds

I bought this Snickers bar twp days ago at the airport. You can see it is just not your ordinary Snickers bar. It is bigger, for one, as it is a two pack. It is also a Snickers Almond Bar. I have been wanting totry them for ages and I have been unable to find any in England. I even bought two to make sure I would enjoy it again if I liked it.For me, Snickers is the quintessential comforting chocolate bar and, since it has nuts in it, it is sort of nutritional too, at least to some degree. I never feel completely guilty munching one. So what is the verdict for this variation? I really loved it! Not as much as the one with hazelnuts, which is my current favourite, but tastier than the normal one with peanuts (which I still like). Almonds, like hazelnuts, give the bar a certain air and taste of snobbery, in a good way.

Jetlaaaaggged...

This is my feeling exactly at the moment. I am back in England since this morning, after a delayed flight and am suffering from the jet lag. Or rather, I am jetlaaaaaggged: feeling like I am walking through cotton wool, speech is slurred, vision not exactly blurry but feeling blurry all the same. Mixed with the homesickness and the post-Christmas blues, this is a potent and nasty cocktail that will keep me "hungover" (metaphorically speaking) for weeks. Nobody likes jet lags of course, but I hate them even more, because I feel so darn helpless about them.

Farewell to winter

This picture was taken from the plane when we wre leaving Montreal to the Saguenay region. It was far more impressive and wintery in Saguenay, but all the same it is snowy enough to call this picture seasonal. We were lucky to have a proper winter in Montreal this year. But soon, we will have to say farewell to this snowy winter and go back to the grey season they have in England this time of year. I feel homesick already. Going back to Québec is always a bit stressful, this is far less so, but going back to our everyday life makes us all feel a bit deflated. In any case, I will miss this snowy winter.

718

This is the 718th post on Vraie Fiction for 2017, and it might be the last one this year. I blogged less than last year, but more than 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2012. At some point in 2018, I will have been blogging for a decade. It has become one of my favourite past time. I will write about my new year's resolutions in more details in a different post (not that I take new years resolutions seriously, but poking fun at them and myself is part of the fun), but I want to mention one here which I intend to follow (for a change, I rarely if ever follow through any resolution): I will try to blog a bit less, but blog better, if that makes any sense. Until then, if I don't write anything else before/for the countdown to 2018, see you next year.

This Yuletide's D&Dr

As long-time readers of Vraie Fiction know, one of the many Christmas traditions my brothers and I follow is to play a Dungeons & Dragons game or two during the holidays. Partially because `'Tis the season to be playing, eith here plenty of wintery atmosphere to keep our imagination flowing, but mainly because now Yuletide is the only time when we can gather in our parent's home, sit down at the table, take our old characters sheet, dices and books and play. It was a short gaming session: about three hours all in all, very little fights. It was also small-scale, as our big campaign had been resolved back in 2014 and the Forces of Evil vanquished after a long war. Still, there is still room for heroism and malevolent critters to fight. We ended it wanting to play more and with more inspiration for the future.

A note on this image: it is from artist Les Dorscheid for the December 1994 issue of Dragon Magazine. I thought the nightly winter setting and the action fit very much an ideal gaming session played during Christmas and accompany this post perfectly.

A subdued post-Christmas blues

I don't know why, maybe it is because I am at home on the holiday, maybe because I am still havingthe longest Christmas holidays I,ve had in years, but I don't feel the post-Christmas blues as strongly as I usually do this year. Because post-Christmas blues is definitely here. As usual, I started feeling it on the 27th. Just not as strongly as I would. Idiscover that there are plenty of things I have not shared yet on this blog: a picture of the fully decorated Christmas tree, Christmas music, Wolfie's many Christmas antics. In fact, I did not blog all that much, too busy that I was enjoying the moment. And sometimes, busy trying to find time to see people. Maybe this is why I don't feel it so much: I need to rest from all the fun. But my brothers are back in Montreal, I will probably not see my godson and his family before we leave and I don't feel excited anymore. So the melancholy is on, albeit weaker than usual.

Blood Safari as Christmas ends

As Christmastime is ending and the post Christmas blues is already setting in, this will be my last reading suggestion for Yuletide. 'Tis still the season to be reading, albeit not for very long. As the novel is set mainly between Christmas and the new year, I thought it made sense to suggest Blood Safari by South African crime writer Deon Meyer. In summery South Africa, it is a Yuletide read devoid of the usual seasonal commonplaces. It is the second of his books I suggested to read for Christmas (see here for the other one). Blood Safari introduces Lemmer, a professional bodyguard who is hired to protect Emma Le Roux while she is trying to find her long lost brother. Lemmer is not a perfect man (no character should be), but he's truly good at what he does and has many virtues I love in a crime fiction protagonist. He is quick, sharp, efficient, reliable, he knows how to scan his surroundings and how to defend himself, his friends and loved ones... or people who pay him. In sum, he is a mercenary with principles. Even in extreme danger and when things see, desperate, he keeps on fighting. In any case, he is a great character, with a troubled past, anger issues and a surprising contempt for alcohol (you'll need to read it to discover why). I have read the novel right after Christmas, since then I have been wanting to revisit to kick start the season. Maybe this coming year.

THE Christmas Meal

Merry Christmas everyone! We are having a quiet day here, in the middle of busy holidays. As we come from a French culture, we celebrate Christmas at midnight on the 25th where we stuff ourselves. So you can see above the Christmas meal we had: tukey, stuffing, meat pie, (mashed) potatoes, home made cranberry sauce, home made applesauce and olives. Eaten right after unwrapping the presents.

L'heure solennelle
