The Sunday Roast experience

Today was Sunday and we decided to initiate my parents and my brother PJ to a proper Sunday roast experience in a nearby pub. It was a proper day for it and no, not only because it was a Sunday: it was cool and dreary outside, borderline cold and we were all in dire need of comfort food. The pub was not the fanciest, but it serves decent food and the staff is always friendly (our son is very popular there). It was a thoroughly enjoyable experience. Wolfie had a bit of my roast (picture right) and his mummy's vegetarian version. it was so filling that we didn't have dinner yet. Although I might make myself something light for supper in a moment.

About David's Tea's Harvest Collection

I blogged about the Harvest Collection of David's Tea a few weeks ago. I was wondering if it was their autumn collection (or Fall as they call it). I asked and received confirmation that it was indeed from the company itself (yes I asked because I had time to waste). About the collection itself, while I find it nice enough I don't know if I like it nearly as much as the ones from the previous years. Not sure why exactly, but I find it less typically autumnal.

Sage conseil...

Psychological horror

This post is for the fellow Halloween lovers among you, a reading suggestion. I know that for the laymen Halloween is far away, but we know it is getting closer and if like me you are already in a spooky mood, you have started reading scary stories. I usually break the ice of not with a classic Gothic tale but with psychological horror. Usually in August, sometimes as early as late July. This year it was this book, last year it was The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson. In recent years, that was maybe the best horror discovery I made. In it, there is no monster jumping from the dark, no ghost showing up in the flesh (so to speak), no blood, no gore... Only people forced to face their own demons, and maybe they are the only real ghosts of the story. I don't want to give any away, this is not a book review or an analysis, merely a plug. Read it.

Preparing Wolfie's first birthday

It will soon be Wolfie's first birthday. I do not want to repeat an old cliché, but it did go quickly. Anyway, as it is a very special, very important birthday, we want to make it special: there are loads of presents for him that we need to wrap up. There will be a rather important contingent of both sides of the family with him: all his grandparents and his uncle PJ. We still have not decided whether we want to spend the day at home or go elsewhere (to a farm or something). Anyway, if someone among you has any suggestions, please write it in the comments.

The Ticklers in secondary school

Time flies: today was the first day of the Ticklers at the secondary school. It was the school where I used to work seven years ago. A bit more now come to think of it, I worked there from late 2009 until May 2010. I don't regret my time there, but I am glad I don't work there anymore, having left an education career somewhat bitter (see this post for what I feel about school here). It would have been strange to teach them, probably not easy, as they are too familiar with me. Still, I sometimes wonder about it. Anyway, I saw a picture of Blonde Tickler on Facebook in her new school uniform and I felt a bit sad. I hope they don't grow up too fast.

Excalibur is real!

Well, almost. I have read the coolest news ever today: a schoolgirl found in Cornwall a sword in the lake where King Arthur is meant to have thrown it away. Granted, it is most likely a prop from a movie, there are plenty on the subject, or an hoax. But for the medievalist that I am, specialized in the Arthurian legend (no kidding: I did my PhD in Arthurian literature), it still gives me butterflies reading this. I envy that child so much.

Phoque.

"We don't need no education..."

And you know the rest, or at least I hope you do. If there is a song that  illustrates everything wrong (or that can be wrong) with the school system, it might be that one. So to all the kids going back to school this week, I give you this song and the clip from the movie The Wall by the greatest rock group of all, Pink Floyd. Okay, so everything is not that bad, but when it does get bad, it feels like it, like you are in the meat grinder.

The White Hart

We recently went to the small village of Nettlebed for an afternoon, my wife, my son and I. And, while we never stopped there, we saw a pub with the greatest name: The White Hart. Now, I love stags as pub's name and as pub's ensign, as I mentioned before, but white ones are even better because in myths and legends they are associated with the supernatural. So it sounds far cooler than any other name for a pub. While this is not the best ensign I saw, it is nice enough, and anyway just for the name it is worth a visit next time we go do Nettlebed.

Ça me donne faim rien que d'y penser.

Harvest season

I know it is the second post in a short period of time where I blog about autumn and harvest, but be warned: I intend to turn this blog into a celebration of all things autumnal for the next few weeks, because it is my favourite season. So anyway, I took this picture in Cardiff Castle and had wanted to share it since then, because it represents harvest so well. I miss picking apples and I have been wanting to do it again for a long time. Now that would be with Wolfie, which would quadruple the fun at least. Apples are the emblematic fruits of autumn and I love them, whether I eat them raw or in a dessert (but I am not a fan of apple pies ironically enough), or even as part of a main meal. But all fruits and vegs are enjoyable to harvest. It is the ritual that is fun, calming and which I miss terribly.

Welcoming September

Happy first of September everyone! For me, it is the beginning of autumn. To start the month and the season, it is a tradition on this blog to upload a picture of this basket full of fruits and crabapple and apple jellies, the bounty of autumnal harvest in a sort of horn of plenty. I have been waiting for that moment a long time. I will of course blog more about my favourite season and what it means to me this year, as it has gained new significance. Until then, happy first day of September.
