Rome in the Rain

"Rome's just a city like anywhere else. A vastly overrated city, I'd say. It trades on belief just as Statford trades on Shakespeare."

Anthony Burgess

I was recently plugging an upcoming exhibition held in Manchester by the Anthony Burgess Foundation, about Rome as seen through the eyes of Burgess and expressed in his writing. The above quote is just one aspect of the Eternal city he depicted. The exhibition is called "Rome in the Rain". As I mentioned in my previous post, it is the French title of Beard's Roman Women, one of my favourite novels of Burgess. I have recently learned (from Andrew Biswell) that Rome in the Rain was the title Burgess wanted for the book, but that the American publisher imposed another one. I never liked the official title. Anyway, I feel kind of vindicated that the upcoming exhibition will have the right title. So I am plugging the event again and its lovely evocative name.

Classic Cluedo!

Sometimes you have small yet very pleasant surprises, that make your day jnot because you gain anything from it personally, but because it gives you hope in human civilization. Like when I saw this. It was a most welcome sight during my last visit to a nearby Waterstones. Usually I would not be too happy to see a board game in a bookshop (because I expect to find books and book related material in a bookshop) but seeing this Clue/Cluedo game really made me happy. it is called a retro series, but it truly is and should be called Classic Cluedo (or Clue, if like me you discovered it under its North American name). As opposed to the revamped, modernised and rather pathetic attempt version of recent years. This is back to its source, the game as we know it and as we love it. And it is the 1986 edition, the very edition I discovered as a child. It became my favourite boardgame and it always have a special place in my heart. Cluedo contributed to develope my love for crime fiction (for a long time in whodunit form) and fueled my imagination as a child. I am so very glad it is back in its classic form and look.

Sunday's procrastination

Sunday is a time for melancholy for me, as the weekend ends. I have often blogged about the Sunday feeling. So I try as much as possible to keep myself and thus my mind active, or rather to keep myself active and my mind braindead, by doing house chores. I spend a good part of Sunday cleaning and tidying. It is my usual objective, anyway. Because Sunday is not so much the day of house chores as the day of procrastination: I avoid doing house chores as much as possible because in the end, it does nothing to my melancholy. The Sunday feeling remains. I guess my procrastination is a symptom of it. Am I the only one feeling this on Sunday? I am unwilling to perform boring, simple tasks.

Happy birthday Cate Blanchett!

Today an old Facebook memory feed reminded me that it is the birthday of Cate Blanchett. Shame on me, I only mentioned her birthday on this blog in 2014. More shameful for the fan that I am, I have yet to watch all her films, having only seen a few. But had I only seen Elizabeth, where I discovered her, I would still consider her the greatest actress of her generation and the greatest one alive. This is only my opinion of course, but I happen to be absolutely right on this one. So happy birthday to a true screen goddess.

Odin for Friday the 13th

It is Friday the 13th and, although I am typing this post the night before, I am publishing on at 13:13. Because I am not superstitious. And to celebrate Friday the 13th, I have uploaded a brand "new" (as in unpublished) picture of Odin, who was briefly my cat before he died tragically. A black cat is a fitting image for Friday the 13th. I still miss Odin to this day. And don't get me wrong: I love Domino, but he is far more difficult and the relationship is not the same. Odin was my favourite feline fellow, a true kindred spirit in cat form. Three days ago it was the anniversary of our meeting. Shame on me, I did not blog about it. So I hope that this is a fitting remembrance of him, a picture of my black cat on Friday the 13th. May he bring you all good luck.

Rome in Manchester

I received an invitation from the Anthony Burgess Society for the preview of an upcoming exhibition in their headquarters in Manchester. The exhibition is called Rome in the Rain, which is the translation of the French title of his novel Beard's Roman Women, one of his lesser known works, yet a brilliant novel. So it will be about Burgess' Rome, as well as the one depicted in the above mentioned novel and in Abba Abba, another great piece. And I guess his other books when the city is featured (as it is featured a lot). I have never been to Rome, I have only experienced it through fiction, in particular the fiction of my favourite writer. It is a shame I cannot go to Manchester any time soon, neither for the preview, nor for the exhibition itself. Too much to do here, what with the new home and all. I would have loved to visit Rome through Manchester.

Didn't It Rain? (Oh yes it did!)

After a weekend that was hot, sunny and in one word summery, we've had the karmic reaction since the beginning of the week: it started raining, it rained some more and a Hell of a lot more. This reminds me of Didn't It Rain, a song I know from Harry Belafonte's repertoire. Well, it has been sung by the Belafonte Folk Singers, so here it is. I love the song and it always gets in my head when it pours on a warm day like these days. It just cheers me up and make me actually enjoy the weather. So I am sharing it with you, to keep for rainy day.

A new home sweet home?

This is what we hope for anyway, if everything goes well, touch wood and all that. As you may know, my wife and I have been looking recently for a new home. Our landlord is selling the flat where we live and the place is simply getting a bit small here. It is now time to move on. And after a few excruciating months of looking for places left and right, we have found one, in the same town. We have made an offer on it and again after a lot of excruciating negotiations it has been accepted. So we should be on the move at some point, fingers crossed, touch wood and all that. There is still a lot to do and buying a home is a stressful and emotional journey, but we are getting there.

The milk run

I took this picture in the National Railway Museum in York. I took many, many pictures there, so many that my wife got a bit embarrassed sometimes. You can see I love trains. I took this one in particular because it is a milk tank, which makes the train journeys it took part in before being exhibited in the museum literal milk runs. The train commute I do every day is also a bit of a milk run. I have done many commutes by trains that we far worse, but I guess any routine journey that has many stops is a milk run. Anyway, this picture reminds me of the expression and while I was in the train today I thought I would share it on the blog. Milk run is the word of the day.

Tomboys are not princesses

One of the Ticklers is a true tomboy, maybe the perfect tomboy, certainly the most tomboy girl I have ever met. I had another proof of that yesterday, when we were sitting with them at Wimpy. After lunch, the waitress came to clear the table and said to the Tickler: "Let me take your plate princess." The Tickler looked at her with very angry eyes, as if she had been really insulted. After the waitress had left, the Tickler whispered: "If she ever calls me princess again, I'll stab her in the eye with a sharp knife!" She was then told off by her mother, but we couldn't help but laugh. It was a mean thing to say to someone who was showing kindness, nevertheless it qualifies as a great unknown line.
