Hedgehogs Crossing

I knew about hedgehogs highways, but I found a new way the Brits show how much they love their wildlife: a hedgehogs crossing sign! We found this a few days ago while walking in a nearby town. I thought it was a great idea. Of course I had to take a picture for the blog. It may sound merely quirky or silly, but it is also a way to increase awareness regarding road safety for these cute little animals. As you can probably tell, I love hedgehogs.

The bookshelves under the stairs

I found this on the internet. I know it is silly, I know it is photoshopped, but right now we are looking to buy and assemble storage spaces, particularly for books (mine and Wolfie's) and I look at it and think it would be an interesting solution, if it existed. Give a double function to our stairway and it would also look oh so cool. And it would optimize the space. Anybody has seen anything resembling this in real life?

Welsh Cakes

For some reason, our son Wolfie is very fond of Welsh cakes. It is like is favourite go-to snack. We often buy them for him, but his maternal grandmother (grandma for sorts) bake them herself last weekend. So we had them fresh from the pan. And having Welsh cakes fresh from the pan, still warm, is just the best thing ever. I went through them like they were getting out of fashion. Frankly, it was embarrassing. I hadn't had lunch, so this might explain why, but it was nevertheless embarrassing. But seriously, they are the best thing ever for an afternoon snack.

The Milk Run

Yesterday during the morning school run, the roads were jam packed due to road work. It was horrible, we had to take back routes to get there on time and even they were busy. It took ages to finally arrive to school. But the run was not without its interesting moments. At some point, right ahead of us, there was a milk truck, or a milk tank, whatever you call it. I mean a truck with a tank full of milk. I think it is the very first time I have seen one of them. Some milk was even dripping from the tank. I took a quick picture. Literally, it turned Wolfie's school run into a milk run.

The hare is back

You may remember that my parents have a hare that visit them sometimes. We are not sure if it is the same one, but since 2020 there is one or many hares that have shown up in their garden and their neighbours' gardens sometimes. Well, the hare came back a few days ago and my dad took a few pictures.

Ukrainian Sighting?

Last Friday, when we were doing to school run, my wife and I may have sighted for the first time Ukrainian refugees. We are not sure, but my gut feeling was that it was indeed the case. So we were walking to pick up Wolfie from school when we crossed a mother and what I assumed were her two daughters. They were all blonde and the girls were of school age, one must have been ten, the other a bit younger, but were not wearing school uniforms. They were speaking a foreign language that sounded Eastern European. It struck me of how similar they looked, yet so different in a way. It is difficult to explain why. I smiled, but did not say a word. Maybe I should have said hi or good afternoon or something. I think I should maybe have been more welcoming. But maybe they didn't want to be bothered. Anyway, not sure what to think of it, but it felt surreal.

Accursed Heat

So far we've had a fairly strange but tolerable summer: it gets in the lower 20s, maximum and the nights and evenings remain fairly cool. Every time this happens, I keep repreating the foolish hopeful's mantra: so far so good, so far, so good... Until it crashes and burns, literally. Case in point: this coming week they are forecasting a heatwave. The first of the season. I am dreading it. When I speak about it, people don't understand that I don't like summer and the sun. Is it so weird that I don't like having my skin covered with squishy, sticky sun lotion, to the point where I look like I'm covered in margarine? Or that I don't like sweating? Or going thirsty? Or to have headache due to the heat? Or being unable to sleep? Or focus? So anyway, I'm really dreading this coming week.

Danger Zone

Yesterday, there was a fête at Wolfie's school, where we were volunteering. Wolfie was reluctant to go at first, but he changed his mind when he saw the bouncy play there. It was called "Danger Zone" and basically a bouncy obstacle course, when you go through tunnels, hills and other things. The children were frantic and I got a bit worried that he might get hurt, but things went well and he really enjoyed it. I must say, I envied my son, as it seemed really fun. And what a cool, badass name as well.

Woodlands and Forests Folklore

The treasures you find in the local bookshop, sometimes literally. When I went a few months ago, I bought Treasury of Folklore: Woodlands and Forests. It says on the cover that it has Wild Gods, World Trees and Werewolves. And the cover features Little Red Riding Hood and the Big Bad Wolf. This cover would have been enough to convince meto buy it, because I am ascinated by the tale so much. I already have two books from the collection, the sea one (present from my wife, which I am reading at the moment) and the Treasury of British Folklore (read it, loved it). But since woodlands are forests are my favourite setting for fairy tales and legends, I want to read this one even more than the other two.

Book Donations

At Wolfie's school recently, they made a special activity: a Book Donations day, to give away books we don't want anymore. My wife took it with a sight of relief: at last she could decluster this house a bit, as it is filled with books. I, on the other hand, don't like or want to give away any of my books, even the bad ones. I always feel a loss. But it makes sense. I guess I have to learn not to be selfish. It had of course to be children books, which is even better, as Wolfie has inherited of many, many books from friends, friends of friends and family. In fact, we have more books than he cares to read and we have sometimes more than one copy of the same book. So Wolfie had to choose which one he was happy to give away. He chose... one.
