"Beware the Ides of March" (especially this year)

I commemorate it every year and nearly missed it this time, but I managed to remember it and it is important that I remember. Today is the Ides of March, the anniversary of the assassination of Julius Caesar. On this day, in spite of various warnings, Julius Caesar went to a crowded place and look where it got him. This year more than ever, beware the Ides of March.

Dim lights and guerilla shopping

Yesterday, we decided to do some guerrilla shopping in Sainsbury's, before things started kicking badly with the coronavirus. It was a strange and not very pleasant experience, but we managed to get most of what we wanted and I think we should be all right for the next few days at least. It was weird to see the aisles half empty and the dim lights. This is what struck us the most. Why the dim lights? It looked like we were at war. I guess we are, in a way. We were guerilla shopping, as we are bracing ourselves for guerilla living.

The 87th Precinct: a new family tradition?

My readers know that I am a big fan of Ed McBain's 87th Precinct series. I discovered it when I was twenty or so and I got hooked since then. I have not read them all yet, but I plan to. I was also pleasantly surprised to discovered that my mother-in-law loves reading McBain's novels. She discovered them thanks to her husband, also a keen reader of McBain's 87th Precinct. I blogged about it here. So it struck me recently, as I am reading a novel from the series again: why don't I lend it to my wife after I finish it and she can discover the books, then to Wolfie when he is old enough? It could become a family tradition. It is already one, in a way.

Odin for Friday the 13th

We are Friday the 13th, so I thought I would share a picture of a black cat, just for the kick of it and because I am not superstitious (or because I do think that old folklore about black cats bringing good luck is true?). Not just any black cat of course: Odin, the black cat we had back in 2013 (fitting isn't it?). I miss him a lot, even now. And I recently found out a bunch of pictures of him I had forgotten I had. So this Friday the 13th is also an excuse to share a "new" picture of my beloved Odin.

Citons Camus

Reading in Costa

During my commute to work, I take the bus early, because they don't go that very often. I have plenty of time in the morning to read, in the bus journey and when I arrive at destination. SO I generally read in the bus station a few minutes, then walk to work. Until I decided recently instead to stop on my way in the local Costa Coffee, by the supermarket which is right on my way. It is warmer, comfier, and, being much quieter this time in the morning, it is easier to concentrate on what I read. Better still: I don't have to buy anything, or at least none of the staff ever bothered me so far. I think even though there's not many customers, they have difficulties keeping on top. Like in every Costa. Be that as it may, I am glad I found this nice little spot and I'm surprised I did not think about it before.

Italy during the Plague

I am a tad melodramatic, but judging by the news, this must be how it feels like in Italy while the coronavirus is running wild, or so it seems. I asked my friend, who lives in the lovely city of Bergamo how she was and I learned that while she and her family was OK, the city itself had been like under siege, as cases of infections was high. So she is working from home with two young boys (one a few months older than Wolfie, the other two years younger). I am glad they are OK in any case, but I am worried about them. It struck me that my life as an expat, while giving me friends from all over the world, also made me far more touched by such catastrophe. Saying that this is a small world may be a cliché, it is nevertheless true. I have been wanting to revisit Italy one day, but this is always something for the future. I was thinking of seeing my friends and have her sons and Wolfie meet and maybe become friends, in spite of the language barrier. It seems as things are going, it will not be any time soon.

A second language

A colleague asked me this question recently: "Guillaume, do you speak a second language?" I replied: "Yes, I'm speaking it right now." I don't want to sing my own praise, but it was good reply and I think it deserves to be a great unknown line.

Planning the birthday already

My birthday is not until a month and a half or so, but as it is kind of boring these days, I have started thinking about it already. I thought a bit of planning would not hurt, especially since it falls on a weekday this year. I have already booked my time off from work, so at least it is one thing done. Now on to the more substantial planning: what to do, where to celebrate and what presents do I want? I have already suggested some to my wife and my family. This is quite easy (by my wife's admission, she always has gift ideas for me). It is the where and what which is challenging. Should we go to the pub, the park, somewhere else, or just stay at home? Should we invite some people or just do it as a family? I welcome any suggestions in the comments.

Train compartments

I took this picture at the Didcot Railway Centre. There was no limit to the number of train rides we could take, so we took a few. What made the ride special is that we were in compartment coaches, like in the old days. I do remember that I did travel from time to time in compartments like this one, but it was decades ago. In Austria I think, maybe also in Belgium. I blogged before about how comfortable traveling by train can be. Well, being in a compartment in the journey, with your loved ones and friends is by far the most comfortable and the most pleasant way of traveling by rail. I know they still exist in luxury trains. I hope we can still find compartments in "regular" trains somewhere.

The difference of one hour

The clocks went forward this morning in North America. I am glad we can wait a bit here. I am one of the few people who dislikes the clocks going forward. I really dislike summertime, in fact: one less jour of sleep, sun coming up early, I really find it less calming, more stressful, unpleasant. Give me reasonably shorter days and normal time every day of the year. That said, for the next few days (until the 29th of March) it has an advantage: it makes it easier to communicate with my parents and my brothers, especially PJ who lives in California. I say this and I haven't had any luck today trying to call my parents, but at least it's only a four hours gap.
