Halloween!

When you will be reading this, it will be midnight. I have scheduled this post in advance to wish you all a happy Halloween. I don't know if I will have time to blog. I try to celebrate as much as I can, but when Halloween comes in the week, it gets more difficult. And there was so much I wanted to blog about regarding the holiday I haven't had time to do! So much more I wanted to do for Halloween which I haven't had time to do. But then this is a time to celebrate, not grieve and there is lot to be happy about. This is my son's second Halloween, but the first time he is conscious about it, or at least he is about its most important emblematic element: the Jack O'Lantern. And he loves it. And that is worth a couple horror movies I had to miss. Hopefully we will have some kids coming to trick or treat. Maybe next year Wolfie will go trick or treating. Until then, happy Halloween 2017!

Halloween Anthology

For tonight's last countdown to Halloween post and the last reading suggestion, the book that fascinates my son so much. It's simply titled Halloween and it was edited by Paula Guran. It's a very special anthology as it is a Halloween anthology. There is plenty of horror in there, but not exclusively. You can even find some poetry. There are plenty of classics, a few forgotten treasures, some stories dating back from a time before Halloween became the phenomenon it is now. And it's a big book, so you will have plenty to read for this Halloween and the next. And of course you can revisit it, as I intend to do in future years.

Jack O'Lanterns, 2017

So we had our pumpkin carving party, and here are the results. From left to right, Brunette Tickler's design, my own design and Blonde Tickler design. They loved it. It was a lovely time, and this year they worked very hard on both the design and the carving. Blonde Tickler found the eviscerating part gross. She said: "I love the look of pumpkins, the taste of pumpkins, the smell of pumpkins. I just don't like the feel of pumpkins." That deserves to be a new great unknown line. But I have to say, their commitment was impressive. As you can see, this was a labour of love.

Pumpkin carving time soon...

Well, these are not real pumpkins, but we have real ones and these could serve as model. I will show them to the Ticklers and see what they think. Because I have confirmation: they are coming this afternoon at 3 to make Jack O'Lanterns. I was afraid it would not work, as I had no news from them until about an hour ago. But then Blonde Tickler called me ans asked if it was still possible to come. So until then if you have any suggestions to keep two eleven year old girls entertained while eviscerating the inside of pumpkins, please tell me. Oh and if you have any design ideas for the Jacks too.

Wolfie and Halloween

I blogged about this book of Halloween stories, aptly and simply called Halloween, edited by Paula Guran before. I finished it last Thursday and will try to blog about it again to dwell on it a bit more and to plug it properly. But right now, I just wanted to tell an anecdote about it and my baby boy Wolfie, who is one year old and to a lesser extend this book. Wolfie loves books. No, he adores books. All books, but some more than others. Recently, I also discovered that he is fascinated by Halloween or, more precisely, by the many decorations I put in the house. The Jack O'Lanterns, the skeletons, all these things. He is not scared by them, in fact he giggles, screams with excitement when he looks at them. Particularly the Jack O'Lanterns. And as you can see, he is also fascinated by his father's spooky reads. He has been curious about all my horror and Halloween books, more than the children Halloween books we bought him (except one). So I captured a few moments this morning when he was checking this Halloween book. I think he will love the holiday just as much as me.

The Screaming Skull

No, this is not this one. What you see on the picture is a very normal, silent, not haunted one which you can find in The Golden Fleece Inn in York. The most haunted pub in England, apparently. But it does not have a screaming skull. It does accompany very well my post on the topic of one great scary story of F. Marion Crawford called... The Screaming Skull. With a bit fo research, I found it on PDF at this link. Crawford based his story on an old legend and it is a perfectly scary read for Halloween. Therefore I suggest it for tonight's countdown to Halloween post. Please tell me what you think of it in the comments.

Garnd-papa Pan Pan

Of fog and mist

For tonight's countdown to Halloween, let's talk about the weather. No Halloween time would be completed without one foggy or at least misty day. I was lucky this morning going to work: it was misty, borderline foggy. It would have set the atmosphere beautifully for a scary story. Unfortunately it didn't last very long and by midday it was all gone. But we had our atmospheric spooky bit of fog/mist. And for the difference between the two, please read the following article from the Met Office. It's not because we muse about the supernatural that we cannot be aware of scientific realities.

Ayoye!

Wolfie's Halloween "read"

For tonight's countdown to Halloween another
reading suggestion, this time from Wolfie's bookshelves. His favourite Halloween book and the only one he "read". By read I mean turning the pages and lifting the flaps. Now it's in a sorry state. The book claims on its cover to be the best Halloween book ever. It might be true when you're one year old. Anyway, it has a bat on the front cover, plenty of other season's critters, it also has lots of flaps (or had anyway) and spooky noises so what's not to love.

Revelations in Black

For tonight's quick countdown to Halloween post, I thought to suggest a short story to read, which I found on The Penguin Book of Vampire Stories. Guess what it will be about? No but seriously, Halloween is not completed without a proper vampire story and this one is a nice classic, written by Carl Jacobi. It is titled Revelations in Black and you can read it online here. Tell me what you think. What makes it a perfect Halloween read, apart from the obvious genre it belongs to is the fact that it is also set around the same time of year: in September and October. And there is an antiquarian, old book hiding dark secrets, there is so much to love!

Witches, witchcraft and a good deed

Tonight's countdown to Halloween post is again about witches and witchcraft. This picture was taken from The Book of the Year 1980something. Back before the internet, it was how I learned a lot of things about the world and folklore: through this yearly review. There was always a section about myths, legends, folklore and other stuff, which fascinated me. This image was taken from that section, it represents the three witches from The Scottish Play, with a bit of artistic license: the black cat and huge mushrooms often associated with these characters. I asked my dad to send me pictures of these images for Halloween, not knowing how I would use them. I just find them really gorgeous and atmospheric.

Well, the inspiration for this post and the excuse to share this gorgeous picture came yesterday. We received the visit of little Wolfie's uncle (my wife's brother), aunt (his wife), but not his cousin 9their daughter/our niece). Cousin, who is now a teenager of 17 years, was busy writing an essay on... witchcraft and witches through the ages and culture. Once of these things that should be for undergrads, not teenagers. Well, as my brother-in-law was lamenting that he was desperate to find a book for her with first-hand accounts, The Penguin Book of Witches, I merely...took the book off our bookshelves. He was flabbergasted, saying he had looked for it everywhere and that he was getting desperate. He said: "I am an atheist, but this nothing short of a miracle." I answered: "Actually, I made a deal with the Devil to get my hand on it." Which is not true, but a new great unknown line all the same. In fact, I bought it to complete my list of Halloween books, planning to read it next year. I am glad I did not make it part of this year's Halloween reads, because now it is in the hands of our niece. This was my good deed of the day.

Octo-BRE
