How to look younger (Snoopy's wisdom)

I haven't blogged about Snoopy and the Peanuts gang in a long while. I thought next time would be on the Easter Beagle, but no. It is a joke that reminds me that it is my birthday soon and that I will be forty. So anyway, this was on my Memories on Facebook today and it felt both hilarious and very relevant to my situation. I may be getting old, but Snoopy is forever young.

The long (un)Holy Week

I took this picture in Brittany and thought it would fit the topic of this blog. And I think that I did not put enough pictures recently. So we are Holy Monday, so we have to go through the Holy Week, which started yesterday, for Easter to be here, and four days, or at least three when you are reading this, for me to be on holidays. And I need this time off badly, like I always do when Easter is near, whatever the date Easter may be. It is a conditioned reflex. The Holy Week feels very long, like a unholy tease really.

Question existentielle (303)

A family gathering

I am writing a quick post this evening, after a very busy day. We had many visitors today: little Wolfie's grandparents from his mother's side, his uncle from his mother's side, with his wife (thus Wolfie's aunt) and daughter (Wolfie's only cousin so far), his auntie from his mother's side and his auntie's partner (thus uncle). A lot of people in this small house and while it is a family gathering, it truly is a gathering to meet our son and be in awe with him. He was spoiled with presents and cuddles and nobody even looked at the mess. And to make things even better, it was very warm outside, an idyllic Spring day like April sometimes gives us. We had a lovely time.

Father & Son

We spent today with the parents-in-law, it was lovely. They told us we were doing a wonderful job with little Wolfie. As first time parents, it is always nice to hear. And... And, well, it is not directly related, but maybe it is, anyway I thought that I would share a song by Cat Stevens tonight. You probably have guessed that I am referring to Father and Son. I have been listening to it far more since I am a dad, obviously this song speaks to me far more now than it ever did.

The red kite nearby

My wife took this picture a few weeks ago, walking back with little Wolfie from a gathering of mummy and babies. You can easily recognize a red kite on the top branches. Red kites abound in this region of England and our town/village in particular. It is not rare to see them flying at low altitude. I call them our avian neighbours. But I have rarely seen one from so close and it is nice to have such a good picture of it. Apparently it is often in this tree when my wife walks back from town. I hope I can see it one day.

"Kiss me Kate"

I thought I would blog about William Shakespeare tonight, because it will be his birthday this month and just because it's always a fascinating subject. A few months ago, I found on YouTube a scene from The Taming of the Shrew I have been wanting to share. Now, it is a fascinating play, maybe a tragedy disguised as a farce and one of the most morally ambiguous in history, but it is also very funny. I find this take on it pure fun anyway, and a great piece of virtuosity. Fun fact: the role of Petruchio is played by Marc Singer. I just cannot believe he could be such good actor. And Katherina is played by Fredi Olster, whom I don't know at all. Anyway, this is a very physical take on the story, the proof that Shakespeare's words are very much alive and kicking. Here the characters wrestle, literally, jump, fight, shout... It is a violent comedy, after all. And when the kiss comes, you feel its strength. Whether or not it was earned, this is up to debate.

Gazon maudit

Epic stag's head

You remember that I blogged about a month ago about a stag's head in a local shop. Well, this is the one we have in my parents's home, a trophy from one of my father's hunting trips at the Anticosti Island. My mum finds it tacky. My wife finds it cruel. My brother Andrew's ex even asked my dad why he was not ashamed of such trophy. I see their point, to a degree. Hunting does not have the social status it once had. But I can't help finding this stag's head epic. Maybe because I am used to it, having seen it above the fireplace since a very young age. But it is a beautiful, majestic head.

Question existentielle (302)

Visitors soon

Here is a bit of exciting news for the weeks to come: soon my parents-in-law will be in England to see their grandson... errr, I mean, the family here. That will be nice. And we will have a little family gathering this weekend, with my brother-in-law, his wife and our niece joining in. It was long overdue. For my wife's brother, wife and daughter, it will only be the second time they see little Wolfie in the flesh. So we are really looking forward to it.

Chocolate Mountain Sundae

It is Sunday, so I thought it was a good excuse as any to blog about the first sundae of the year, even though I do blog a lot about food these days (I will try to vary a bit). We recently went to Bourne for Desserts, an American dinner styled café in the very English village of Bourne End. I had their Chocolate Mountain Sundae. Like a classic sundae, but with chocolate ice cream instead of vanilla one. It's properly decadent stuff. It was a lovely day and we had a lovely time there (Wolfie was very popular as usual). It was the proper thing to eat on a warm sunny day. And they have a dessert menu of cakes that will be fitting for colder days. They also have more variety of sundaes that seem just as decadent if not more, so I think we will come back to Bourne for Desserts often, in the next few weeks and months.

April Fool's Day's anecdote

Today is April Fool's Day, first day of April, and something funny happened to us. Thankfully, we were not the fools. We have recently ordered a rug for the living room. It was delivered to us today, except that... the delivery man had two rugs for us, exactly identical. I only paid for one. He told us that he was just the delivery man and that such mistakes happen, last week he delivered... four televisions to a man who had ordered. So anyway, we hesitated a moment, but as we had other things to do we just decided to keep both rugs for now. We have no idea what to do with the second one.

Boisson d'avril
